Heya,

I'm thinking about creating a halfling spellthief for our new campaign (which
starts at level 2). The problem is, I don't have a good idea what to do with it
and would like some suggestions, tips or opinions. First of all, most are rather
new so optimisation is not an issue at all. The allowed books are PHB and PHB
II with specific request for others.

The party make up:
Druid
Ranger
Favoured Soul
Sorcerer -> going for luckstealer.

I would like to let my spellthief fill the gap of being the main skillmonkey, and
further to flank a lot in combat. Both for my sneak attack but mainly to
provide the ranger and favoured soul bonuses as I won't be doing much
damage anyway.

My ideas so far:
- Take a level wizard for both the familiar, level 0 and 1 spells and the scribe
scrolls. Advantage is that the Familiar will be able to help me scout, could
carry spells (like cure light wounds I borrow) and search.
The problem is that I won't get the familiar abilities and possible multiclass
penalties. Though I can probably convince my DM to set my favoured class
as spellthief instead of rogue.
- Go for Nightsong Infiltrator. Problem will be Climb and evasion ability though
one level rogue will solve this, and it will hamper my stealing. Pro is that it
will help me help my team a lot.
- Shadow Dancer. Has Hips and Shadow Jump which will help me jump around
the battlefield easier. Requirements are quite easy too. This will however,
again hamper my stealing.

Last thing; Master spellthief is out but I will cast spells at full caster level.

Anyone got fun concepts to go for, or opinions on the options given?

Are psionics likely to pop up in the game? Because you could always take the feat psithief to cover that.

Take the Acquire Familiar feat if you really want a familiar - it'll scale with your spellthief levels instead of wizard levels. But you don't really need it, you should be a capable scout on your own. Consider taking Wild Cohort so you have a flanking buddy.

Fax wrote a guide (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44299) for spellthieves, so take a look-see.
