Okay, you know the drill, my merry men and women, so let's get to it, but first:

The Rules would you kindly read these, and obey them...

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

So: a topic of conversation. Go!

I love taking screenshots of games. I mean, my computer isn't very good, and I can't run very good graphics, but nevertheless, it's like photography, except with video-games. And I love photography. If only I was any good at image editing, I could have such wonderful pictures from games.

Mostly older games, as the newer games just don't look up to snuff on my computer. Medieval 2, Rome Total War, the Dawn of War games, Company of Honour. Those kinda things.

How to make pages that don't look like they time traveled from 2000.

1: No GIFs. No JPEGs. PNG or nothing. I'm assuming you don't have Adobe Flash, and I am thankful for that. You do not want a fancy flash page.

2: Draw it first. You should design the way your page will look before you even write one line of code. Once you have a concept on paper, you can make it real on the screen without having to wonder if you're doing it right, because you have the idea right in front of you.

3: Structure. Make sure it is consistent. Typical structures are as follows.

Top Down
Most of your page should be centered. There should be a large banner at the top giving your site's name, and content for the site below that in a large text field. This is basic though, so you might want to try...
Sidebar
Build a few boxes and put some large text inside each one so that you have yourself a line of links that go to the various parts of your site. Site logo can go in the top left. Basically, think of THIS page when you think of this style.

The rest is basically just knowing what colors go well together and how to design graphics. I'm working on a project right now, so sadly I can't offer any direct help. But take a look around at some sites you frequent, and you'll find design practices that you can employ yourself.

I don't know how much photoshop would improve the quality of the pictures. I used to take a bunch of screenshots on a less than good computer myself.

If you just want to do some cropping then it'll be good, but I don't know how much you can do beyond that.

If anyone has an iPhone (or iPad, or iPod Touch) take a look at Game Dev Story. It's like $3 (or if you know how, free :smallwink:) but it's very addicting.

You play a CEO of a game developing company. You get to hire your employees, take contract work, or design your own games. If you get a hardware engineer, you can make your own console and try to dominate the market.

The game records up to year 20 for a high score, but you can continue to play afterwards. I'm currently up on year 42, I've made over 120 games, I have my own system now that I am solely developing for, and I've got over 20 games that made the Hall of Fame. Seriously, this game is so addicting, my iPhone's battery was full when I got up about four hours ago, and it's nearly drained right now.

I think I might need to find some place to store my cosplays, soon. They're building up

Barring the music I like from Anime and Videogames (read: a lot), I'm quite into Pop music. I like rock and metal a bit, but not really too much. It... tires me. Too loud.

Also, lyrics matter to me a lot. It may sound as a contradiction since I listen to a lot of Japanese Music and am not fluent in the language, but they do. Back when Guitar Hero 3 came out, I listened to Through the Fire and the Flames by Dragonforce a lot.... and sometimes I fast-forwarded the solo.

I think the mundanely epic could refer to such epic-ness as the epic high five picture.

Depending on which character you choose, your sister/brother is stolen on Halloween night by monsters. Your Quest is to get her back.

Of course, in battle your costumes allow you to become super powerful: i.e. A crude robot costume in battle becomes a giant super awesome robot.

Along the way you'll collect battle stamps, trading cards, and of course the ever awesome, candy. You'll also aquire patterns to other costumes. Some costumes allow you a special ability outside of combat, and each costume has its own unique ability in combat.

Towards the end I got a little frustrated with the number of battles I was getting into, but overall it was a really fun game.

Frep.
I hate typing up fully parsed translations into modern English while maintaining the verse format.
Bally declined language with their kennings and compounds not letting me organise the lines properly with their poxy accusitive, dative, genitive and nominative endings allowing for build ups of variation over seven or eight lines all referring to a verb which has be delayed until the end of the sentence. And it doesn't even have a future tense so we have to figure out from context and half the accusitives are over twelve lines so form and accuracy wants to fly out the window but I'm stubborn like that and they have so many pronouns and sometimes that indefinite articles aren't but are actually something else altogether and there are so not many pronouns because of the implications with each individual declension for singular and plural (but thank chocolatey goodness the dual's so rare) in all four (or five) cases, and everything has to agree so if you screw up once you lose the sense of the entire phrase.
And don't even get me started on the kennings which fits so nicely into their stress patterns and hemi-stitches but turn into clunky, unweildy phrases of awkward Doom! when it becomes modern English; oh by Thor and Odinn why o why o why o why did I even, this is driving me up the wall with frustrated academic rage, I get the issues with translating a text from such a language into English where we have to specify all the iunk about the obiect the subiect and the indirect obiect and including the determiners - indefinte or definite - and some of the imagery really iust doesn't carry over and I need more synonyms and epithets for God! but the whole point of this exercise isn't even to publish this for ease of reading, but academia to prove we can so it's accuracy over niceties, but I like niceties. You could also make a case for being hired at the hourly rate as advertised; the organisation shouldn't in good conscience retract the defined wage.

They can in good conscience reiect the application of everyone who tries to make that case, though. Or iust retract the entire iob offer and replace it with one with an hourly wage they're actually willing to pay.

Everything was either on-the-spot value generating (which was mostly pretty accurate, even without my help) or vaguely planned out.
The most obvious improvisation was a called shot to drive an arrow deeper into a turtle's skull, which was actually me coming up with stuff.

Also, wearing a sleeveless white long-coat and walking while listening to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoqJF5DQCSA) made me feel incredibly badass.

Paramedic (Ambulance Worker) = Ambo

Sorry and okay; I just have a fascination with cryptids, is all. I find the topic frightfully entertaining.

Speaking of which; when I was five, our family attended a friend's housewarming. Now, this couple and their family lived out in the bush; too far away to be considered a part of suburbia, too near the city to be considered definitively rural.
Their house was recently built and so their garden was dominated by wildly growing vegetation.
Beyond their backyard loomed row upon row of pristine forest; uncut and perhaps rarely visited.
There were a group of kids playing together, me included, and in our explorations we investigated every nook and cranny of the house. Finding little of excitement, we ventured out to the garden to play.
What emanated from the bush that day has crafted an indelible imprint on my mind. A low roar, it was something that I had not heard of before or since.
I'm unsure whether it was a yowie, as I was previously unaware of their existence, but I was sure nothing in the "natural" world could have made that noise.

So, bees. I would be interested in knowing how many flowers was used in that experiment, since I suspect this is just a typical journalist missing the point. Humans are very capable of solving small instances of the travelling salesman problem quickly, and so are computers once we move on and start using advances heuristics.

If bees were able to solve TSP for 10 or 20 flowers, thats not very remarkable, and would not take a modern computer hours. If bees on the other hand were able to solve TSP for 85.000+ flowers, that would impress me.

Perhaps it should be noted that a technique based on the way insects navigate already exists: Ant colony optimization (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ant_colony_optimization). See also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travelling_salesman_problem

I don't think this result is really noteworthy, nor have many consequences, but just in case: I apologize most humbly to our buzzing bosses for the heretical and clearly wrong statements above.

Gah!
This stupid newsletter for work is driving me insane.

After we got the go-ahead from our Ops Manager, we had to send it to the next level manager.
He didn't like the fact that it was spaced for people to be able to easily read it, and thus took up four pages.
No, he wanted it compressed into three pages instead.
So I had to spend the entire afternoon trying to figure out ways of compressing this thing down from four to three pages, even if the text is already in a 9pt size. The only thing I could do was to reduce the size of the various article headers to be no more than a couple of pixels bigger than the actual text, and I had to cut an entire article out to get things to fit.

I'm NOT liking the look of the three page version.

Oh well, it had to happen sometime.

G-ood news! Instead of all this dreary stuff!

The movie(about a reunion) I've been working on, around 14 minutes long, for the past couple of weeks is finally finished. Met up with the boss/person who ordered it.
They will be producing 200 dvd's of my movie.:smallcool:
Possibly 300 or 400 if they have enough money.

:smallcool:

This will look gooooood on my resume & Portfolio.

The more I hear about the people at your job, the more I wonder where humanity is going. I feel sorry for you.

You find snow depressing!? Burn the heretic! :smallfurious:

:smalltongue:

When it started snowing in early December last winter, one of my class mates said "Oh no, not snow." When I asked her why she didn't like the snow, she answered that that's because it'll just turn to slush in a weeks time. The snow lasted for three months. :smallamused:

The snow itself isn't all that bad. Its the bitter wind and overall wetness. And of course the cold, I hate the cold. :smallfurious: It doesn't take long for fingers to get numb and if your out for very long you'll be chilled for a long while after. :smallannoyed:

Bah, winter.

Either you have very cold winters or bad gloves. Or you just don't move around enough.

Okay, there are things I dislike about the winter too (the darkness, oversnowed roads, the slush when it starts to get warmer again for the three strongest dislikes), but I like the winter as a whole.

*Points at location* Note, the coldest part of Canada, the prairies, specifically Saskatchewan. And believe me, once you're out using your hands not even the warmest gloves will keep your hands warm for long, also you can't move around enough.

I don't like summer that much either. Blistering heat, sun beating down on your head. Sunburn is always fun too. At least it's a dry heat.

Yeah, I saw that you live in Canada, but I also happen to know that there are parts of Canada which are warmer than most of Sweden even during the winter, including the part where I live, so I decided to not draw any hasty conclusions and let you specify some bits first. I guess you have some reasons to hate the cold then.

Now, I'm curious to how cold it actually gets during the winter where you live...

And, I'm very fond of the little warmth we get over here (okay, it does tend to reach 30 degrees Celsius in the summer), and I do get cold very easily, hence why I always walk around in a fleece jacket in my wake time in the cold half of the year. I'm very fond of my fleece jackets.

You bet I do:smallcool:

We usually get temperatures between -20C and -30C and occasionally colder. There's also wind chill on top of that, and boy does it get windy. *shivers*

I am definately not an outdoors person. I prefer the great indoors. :smalltongue:

You and me both. I where a sweater almost all year round. I'm wearing a very thick one now.

-20C is survivable, but I have to be well dressed and stay moving, and headwind is a no-no. In those lower temperatures, I probably wouldn't stick my nouse through the door except for a pretty brief time.

With those conditions on the other side of your door, no doubt. :smallamused:

Heh, this summer, I found that 1. I'm comfortable in a long-sleved shirt and jeans when walking in the 30C heat, and 2. that I feel cold while lying in the sun and said heat after a moderately long swim in 25C water. The last part confuses even me.

So I'm walking into my house. Apparently, I'm the first one home today; alright, that's cool, I'll get some things done around the place. I look upstairs- I see two or three wasps on the ceiling up there, and another on a window. Well, time to grab the fly swatter and head up there; it's in that room with them, but I'm sure I can get it and get out in time.

I step up there a few minutes later, turn my head, and discover that I can no longer see out of the window; the wasps have completely, totally covered it in such a way that I wouldn't feel safe going near it in a tank.

Every year in this house. Every. Year.

That's... interesting. Are you cold blooded? That doesn't make sense either though. Hmm...:smalltongue:

Wow, that's going to be... fun... to deal with. And where do you live that there are wasps now? Wherever it is I'll swap you. :smalltongue:

Solution:
1. Flamethrower
2. Sell them salted to Africans (they eat ants, and wasps are their relatives - the ants' relatives, not the Africans')
3. Profit

The South; specifically, South Carolina.

I would normally be scared and confused at this monstrous hive that has reformed since I last dealt it a blow. But I know the source. And at this point it my life, I know the drill.

ION: I spent the last two hours of this evening reading The Call of Cthulhu thanks to another thread here on FB. I have to admit that it was time for finally picking up some of Lovecraft's works, and The Call of Cthulhu had a very fitting length for reading in a single evening. And it's quite good to, I'll have to read some more Lovecraft whenever I find some spare time (which probably won't be any time soon. This Procrastination application is really clogging up my CPU right now, and all vital processes slow down when I try to terminate it :smallsigh:).
