Avatar Theme Week Central 1 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139065)

=============================

The process for choosing a new week is currently as follows:

Nomination phase: People nominate new weeks by suggesting their Theme Week Idea in bold.
Voting phase: All of the nominated weeks are listed and each person can vote for their top three choices in bold red.
Yay! We Won! phase: Once a week is chosen, one of the supporters for that week should make a separate thread for the theme week in question and then link it in this thread so I can add it to the archives above.

Important: If you don't like a theme week under discussion, then either try to drum up support for a different theme, or don't participate. That's all. Please refrain from negative comments. Saying 'I'm not interested and wouldn't participate' is fine. Saying 'This choice sucks because...' and doing it in multiple posts is not.

**When this thread reaches page 50, please do not start the new thread unless you can commit to keeping the links up to date.**

Sounds too general, but any subcategories of it would be too narrow. No thumbs down from me, though; I'd probably think of something. Something awesome? Maaaaaybe.

I'm going back to lurking this thread, so I'll just give it a vote now (if that's even what you kids do these days) for the heck of it. +1 for Anime Week

I still think something more general like Superhero week or even DC Comics Week would be better. Even if we get a whole plethora of Laterns, it gives the other people who aren't so keen on becoming characters from one of the more obscure ones a little more choice.

Eh. You know what? I'm too apathetic about this concept to even argue against it. Ignore this.

I believe this is the general (possibly?) idea so far. Somewhere between anime versions of your avatar and your avatar cosplaying.
Or maybe both, who knows.

An anime version of your avatar cosplaying, Now THAT I'd like to see!

It's not like you're going to get a visit from the avatar police if you interpret the theme week differently than everyone else.

I would just like to categorically state that I am not a member of the avatar police- moreover, the avatar police- of which I am not a member- does not exist. You have not been warned.

I was not sure if it fit the anime theme week. My first thoughts go to the cosplay thing like Halloween only that you have to dress like a anime figure.
So i wanted to go the opposit way maybe it is possible to make an anime style avatar out of the OotS-Style Avatar.

Futhermore an idea that came up in my mind, which may be used later after anime theme week:
Team-Up Week
Terms are simple the Playgrounders build up groups. To see in what team you are all Avatars of the same team wear the same (or a nerly same) Outfit. For example all wear the Star Treck uniform in red maybe one team or all wear only a towel.

I think the problem with schoolgirl week is that there's not a lot of options for outfits compared to say, comic book week or anime week. And the disturbing reaction but that reason isn't as valid.

Valid point. Actually, I don't particularly see Anime Week as being too general. o.o; I mean, you could be anything from a Gundam to a State Alchemist, or a schoolgirl, or a catgirl, or a robot boy, or a CABBIT! But it would still be recognizable as "Anime"

Of course, for some people it would be difficult to make the change noticeable. <.<; *cough* Which I guess has also been brought up.

That didn't stop me from putting my pirate avatar up on Talk Like a Pirate Day though. :smalltongue:

I say, Anime Week would be the perfect opportunity for already Anime avatar-wielding playgrounders to ask for an avatar from a different anime.

Bonus points if your anime is from before the year 1999.

I for one might give myself a red jacket, pink tie, blue dress shirt, white pants, black shoes and a round haircut, while holding a gun and performing a daring heist. (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3wsmzd3iZr8/Ss5bDDKzreI/AAAAAAAAA3M/0RvSzL9KsSQ/s400/lupin.jpg)

Or I could just be some unfortunate guy in a school uniform being followed around by an alien. (http://welltuncares.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/lum-and-ataru.jpg)

Or just a bald short guy. (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kSG3CjIp0VI/SNUdyOGLOQI/AAAAAAAAAIk/aQ6vF-ZNa6I/s320/krillin01.jpg)

Not too general. More like all others are too specific. Lantern Week is about as specific as SchoolGirl Anime week.

I believe somebody suggested maybe narrowing down anime week into various smaller categories- one of which was schoolgirl week. I suggest that schoolgirl week be considered as a stand-alone, if only to give room for some non-Japanese style schoolgirls.

Other than that, team up week sounds like an awesome idea- though I get the feeling that'll be subverted by more people than usual (all these people who insist on flaunting their 'individuality' rather than forming teams of varying degrees of randomness:smallwink:).

I was trying to suggest that- instead of narrowing down anime week (I already have an anime avatar in case you hadn't noticed) we maybe do a schoolgirl week as well as anime week.

This gives us a greater variety of anime inspiration to work with, as well as more styles of schoolgirl than just the Japanese styles to work with, for the best of both worlds.

Be it the rebellion militiaman from Halflife 2 ("Don't forget to reload, Dr. Freeman!"), random hobo from No More Heroes ("My spleeeeeeaaaaaaaaaan! x.x *explodes into a fountain of blood*"), that one Redshirt who died ("Captain, come look at thi-x.x"), the Wastlander you rescued from a gaggle of raiders who refuses to be thankful in Fallout 3 ("Look, I don't want to be rude, but... go away." "... I saved you! D=" "=I") or Generic Soldier from Generic War Video Game ("*shoots stuff*"), this week is to commemorate those who probably don't deserve commemoration. The many, the small, the irritating, the minor NPC.

Basically, you'd dress up as the NPC in question. For example, I plan on dressing up as a HL2 medic.

Hmmm...I can whip up something for Comic Book Week, even if I don't know that many comics. I'll have to skip Anime Week, tho. I know next to nothing about anime.
Maybe we could combine the two?

That wouldn't make much sense. They're two very different things.

You don't need to knoww much about anime to contribute though. Pokemon is a good example of anime that many people are probably familiar with. Heck my avi will be based off Dragonball Z and I haven't seen that in years.

Other examples of anime you may have watched as a child without realizing it are Sailor Moon, Digimon, Knights of the Zodiac, or Monster Rancher.

Trouble is that anime very much suffers from the Marmite syndrome. Either you love it or you hate it. People who want to participate in a week shouldn't be left out if it's that narrow. I say make it even larger! Make it an animation + comics week.

Sailor Moon, Digimon, Knights of the Zodiac, or Monster Rancher.

Shouldn't you broaden it even more to just "avatar week"?
I mean, so those who don't like "animation" and "comics" (although probably rare around here) can join in? :smalltongue:

Anime is as much a genre as animation in general is a genre. As in, it's not. It's an art style. I find it hard to believe you couldn't find something you'd like. :smallconfused:

But, alright. If not everyone can get into anime, then I suppose a generic "animation" week is alright. Seems a little too broad to me, though. =/

I'm gonna throw this out here as a suggestion, feel free to shoot me down. It's just that I had this idea ages ago, since before there even was a Theme Week Central Thread.

Pixar Week

Come on, I think we all know they've earned it, and pretty much everyone here has seen at least one Pixar movies (all of them, if you're like me :smalltongue:), so most people won't feel left out.

And yes, I know some people will immediately jump at Dreamworks Week, but I think most of Dreamworks's movies aren't quite as celebrated as.... all of Pixar's.

So, thoughts?

Pixar Week

So, thoughts?

My only thought is that people are complaining about how Anime week is too specific, and some are going as far as saying that even an Animation week might be a little narrow, then you pick something with even less of an appeal.

Because Pokemon is a video game, card game, anime, series of toys, collectible hats, toilet seat covers, etc, and more people know Pokemon than a lot of the obscure animes I know we'd get. It was obvious from all the pokeballs and little monsters (even if you didn't know they were pokemon) flying around that there was a theme week going on, but there's little point doing a theme week if you have to know that this guy's gone as Moonface from Busou Renkin and link that with the other guy who's Naruto to even realise there's a theme week. Anime is too broad in its contents, and a little too narrow in its appeal to really work as a theme week. Doing an Animation Week would still let everyone who wants to use an anime avatar do so.

To quote-butcher Lincoln, you can't please all of the people all of the time. No one is going to be wild about every single theme week. It isn't leaving someone out if they aren't interested in a particular week. They still have many other weeks to play in.

Gotta agree with Ri- Happy and 'Ruki. If you aren't into anime, fine. You can sit it out, or you can get an avatar themed on your favourite cartoon. Whatever, your choice. Either way, I'm probably going to dress up as an anime character, and a lot of people probably will, too. Do what you want, but honestly, it's just one week. You're not exactly missing a lot if it doesn't happen to match up with your interests.
