Ladies and gentlemen, we're approaching area of heavy turbulence. I would reccomend you to stay in your seats and hold each other tightly. If anyone's scared, our stewards will soon bring you free hugs.

The Rules To prevent this thread from going down in a tailspin, you'd better obey these.

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

Also, I think I need to hire a steward of some sort... :smallwink:

If those are the only duties, I imagine Cobra will be happy to oblige. You won't even have to pay him! Or, like, do anything. Iust let him loose, and the hugging will happen.

Ooh yay, new thread.

And from the last thread;

You know, I'm not that sure that people are especially prepared over here either. I was actually quite surprised when I found my street plowed this morning. Usually, we have to wait at least half a week before anything but the main roads get plowed. I actually contemplated skiing to school today if they didn't manage to plow the roads.

My city is always prepared. Doesn't really help on the first snow storm though. It's best to stay home that day. I didn't and now my hood is bent:smallfrown:

The city salts the road like crazy. Very hard on vehicles, but at least you won't die driving.

As much as the city is prepared, the people living here aren't. On the first snow storm there were accidents everywhere. I'm sure at least half the city was in an accident. Today we had another bout of snow and I came across a minor accident. The roads aren't even that bad, get snow tires already.

*BOOGIE!*
This thread has been Koorly-blessed.

From the last thread:

The only reasons I've ever really accepted for wearing contacts were performance-related. There's a bit during the Act 1 finale of Patience when the female chorus all blindfold themselves, which obviously is easier with contacts than with glasses.
Also, apparently glasses can be an issue with the lights reflecting off them and potentially obscuring facial expressions to some extent, from the audience's point of view. They asked me if I could possibly manage without mine for Ruddigore. But since they only asked at the dress rehearsal, I ignored it completely.

Honestly? Given the choice between contacts and no glasses at all, I'd go no glasses. My eyesight's not so bad that I'm virtually blind without them; granted I'd have trouble with reading . . .
*takes off glasses*
*squints*
Oh my goodness.
I now have trouble reading the words on my computer screen, they're rather blurry and a lighter black than they should be. That's . . . a lot worse than I remember.
*re-glasses*
So yeah. I'd have trouble reading anything on a bright screen or something far away. Or seeing anything far away with any reliability.
But as far as a play goes. Easy. A stage is only so big after all.

And they were rather foolish asking you at the dress rehearsal about de-glassing. Especially as, if I'm right, your eyesight is rather poorer than mine, so you;d need to be able to adiust to being glassesless.
Myself, I rather like the scary shiny blank glasses myself. Adds a touch of fear to your appearance.

Oh ye gods yes. I have such a phobia of going blind, and anything being near my eyes. This is probably due to having hypersensitive eyes. The first and only time I had a contact in my eye, I fainted from the pain. :smalleek:

Eeep. :smalleek:
I don't think I can actually wear contacts with my prescription; but the thought of anything near my eyes makes me flinch too.
Eyeliner, mascara, fingers, frecking needles being poked into my pupil when I'm fully conscious and only nine years old (or was it eight?), and the aftermath of having to use an eyedropper for about three weeks after that was bad.
Didn't want anyone else to do it for obvious reasons, so I got to almost poke myself in the eye with a pointy plastic cone. Whee.

On weather, it's been hovering just around freezing and raining for the past week. :smallsigh:

'Scuse me while I go hibernate.

Not freezing here, well not truly; but lots of rain and coldness here.
And to think in iust over two weeks I'll be spending an evening in a flimsy ballgown.
*mope*

ION:
Whoop!
Two essays down, the translation (as due in next Thursday) is half done (but I'm going to do the whole piece), so I've only got two essays to do.
I can do this.
Finish off the other fifty odd lines I have to do tonight. Tomorrow write up that essay. The weekend for the other essay.

Oh.
But I'm going over to Lawyer Friend's next weekend. So between next Monday and Friday I got to write up that essay too. And knowing my fits of procrastination I won't have done the Next Thursday essay until Tuesday/Wednesday.
So Thursday/Friday for the Monday essay.

Argh. And the weekend after that is the Ball, so I got to get that Monday essay done by Friday. Urgh. And I think that's 8th week too, so I have another essay due in on Thursday.

Excuse me while I go cower in a corner for a few minutes and whimper.

Or would you prefer a different contribution? Maybe a story about said event rather than actually doing it, and how the Goddess would be utterly grossed out by the whole lamb slaughtering thing?

Or maybe you don't like mutton? Maybe a side of beef would be better? :smallconfused:

Aaaaawwwww, that's so sweet. A story would be best though, not because I get grossed out over animal slaughter (I'm pretty bloodthirsty), but because it's thematically appropriate.
I'll get over it though.
Hoenstly, if I iust bothered to manage my time better I'd be much better off. Seriously.
I mean, even if I only halved my time here I'd be much better off. Can't imagine what it'd be like if I simply stopped posting. It's a tempting thought isn't it? Don't worry. I'm not going to be doing this any time soon. Or ever.

Or maybe you don't like mutton? Maybe a side of beef would be better? :smallconfused:

Mutton is roasted sheep.
Roast lamb is well, roasted lamb.
I'm not really a fan of either of them, and beef's only slightly better. I will however enioy any roast pork or chicken you have. Or duck. Or venison.

Meh. Last year in Fenham, I never switched the heating on. Stuck clingfilm over my window for extra insulation, wore extra layers, and fingerless gloves to keep my hands warm while typing or writing, and avoided leaving my bedroom, or for that matter my bed, as much as possible. But never switched the heating on.

As much as the city is prepared, the people living here aren't. On the first snow storm there were accidents everywhere. I'm sure at least half the city was in an accident. Today we had another bout of snow and I came across a minor accident. The roads aren't even that bad, get snow tires already.

That's so very true over here too. Every single time we're hit by the first snowfall, everyone gets really surprised and the amount of accidents skyrocket. You'd think that people would learn after i happened a few times, but no, apparently not.

Hunger, like tiredness, comes in waves. If something keeps you occupied through the hunger, it will go away, and come back later, or when you eat something.

O.o It's like I'm looking in a mirror.

You're an attractive young female english student whose book geekery is of such epic proportions you've been deified for it?

Oh my oh me.
I accidentally logged myself out of the site. So 'course, I logged back in.
First under Koorly, and then Curly. Then I remembered my actual name.
I legitimately forgot my own name.
I have no idea what this says about me.

That you're tired, I think.

I think it says that you should use the name change request thread to actually change your name to Koorly. It would be simpler, should you ever log out again, no?
:smalltongue:

Then she'd iust try to log in as Curly, Kurly, Koorli, Curli...
Besides, I disagree with changing usernames to abbreviated nicknames derived from them. Iust because it's what people call you doesn't mean it should be your actual name. And it will look weird and wrong to anyone used to the original.
'sides, the 'KitGirl' is an essential element of Curly's identity here. Because Curly has a kitten cat.

Rawhide, don't do that confusing title-change thing again! That was confusing.

That was awesome! Though it's an idea which should not be overused.

As long as it's not a Topless Random Banter.

I don't know what we'd do without Koorly's help to move us along.

I'm... really not sure what you're suggesting here.

You know, if I wasn't such a procrastinator, I would have made a picture based on a number of puns derived from the word Topicless. Aside from Topless, Tropicless and (the slightly non-sensical) Top-Iceless (think the tip of an iceberg) would also be featured. :smallamused:

That's when we started to train youthful flame warriors instead of physical rebels, honing the skills required to survive in the boardroom well before we gained admission. I've seen that before. I just didn't know if it was the general tone of the comic itself. Marvel, from all that I've read, tends to be very serious, and what I've heard about Deadpool's backstory is...actually kind of depressing. o.o;

Muffins makes a good dessert, I was merely having dinner in reverse order. See, I've iust finished eating my main: cereal.
This does ring up an interesting quandary, if I say it is dinner time, or that I'm eating dinner, does that then meant that whatever I'm eating at that point in time becomes dinner even if it is typically considered breakfast, lunch or a snack.
I would say so. Dinner is a state of mind.

This is problematic then, because by this definition I have't actually eaten a proper dinner in a couple of weeks. My dinners are normally what I have for lunch.
And I tend to define dinner by times rather than the make up of the meal.

My relationship to RB is a funny one. Pretty often when I check it, I find the current topics not interesting enough to reply to, but that I've missed some other interesting topic two pages ago which was discussed when I was away. Then, when I return half a day later, the thread either hasn't moved at all, and I'm still not interested, or it has moved a few pages forward, and I realize that I actually find the "uninteresting" topic that was discussed earlier interesting now. It is a source of sighs...

@Thread title: When I came up with it, I first thought up 'topicless', and then, pretty instantly, realised that it looked pretty similar to 'topless'. I always read it as 'topicless', though (might be because I wrote it, however :smallwink:).

Consequently, I am really bad at driving.

I had my test today. ><

I'm just surprised the thing my examiner chose to fail me on was just being in the wrong lane for one small stretch of roundabout. Like, he didn't notice me drift across about three lanes at a different roundabout, nearly scrape a bus, narrowly miss a parked car, and go up the right of some traffic when it was very debatable whether I had the room to? Huh. No mention of it on his reporty thing. I got 6 minors, which is apparently a really rather good drive. I thought I was pretty awful myself. And he randomly told me to pull over and then move off again about six or seven times. :smallconfused: It was odd.

I agree to a certain extent. Then again, what's the difference between tea, dinner and supper, all three which are eaten at about the same time of the evening.

I grew up with the three basic meals. Breakfast in the morning before heading to school, then lunch at about midday, and then a light meal consisting of some sandwiches and tea/hot chocolate/milk chocolate drink.

Only rarely did we have what I'd define as 'dinner' which would be a cooked meal. Mostly only on Friday or Saturday nights.

I get the same feeling every now and then. Sometimes there's just not enough going on that I feel I can contribute to.

Spatial awareness is quite important when driving. Not having good spatial awareness could result in a very high insurance premium.

I backed into a wall on my driving test, and I still got my licence.
Was trying to do a three point turn, and didn't make it round all the way first time, so I decided to make it into a five point turn instead (which is acceptable). When I was about to start forward again, I figured I'd make sure that I had enough space to not have to make it into a seven point turn, so I decided to back up a little bit more, 4-5 inches or so.
Problem was that there was a wall only about 3 inches behind the car.
It was just a very tiny bump at basically no speed at all, though, so I got my licence anyways.

Went to see "Noises Off!" last night. My cousin was in it. Let me tell you, that boy really threw himself into his role.

And I mean he literally threw himself into it, down the stairs, head spinning, and then down the rest of the stairs to finish it off. Probably the best pratfall I've ever seen anyone do, ever.

Yeahhh, I once had a tech support guy tell me I should send my laptop back in to have its hard drive reformatted, and Vista reinstalled, because its wireless drivers must have been broken. This was after I explained that on my Ubuntu partition, the exact same problems happened; networks were visible, but I couldn't connect to them. :smallsigh:

So yes. Why does tech support suck?

Reading my textbook for class, I came across a reference to RAM.

...What does it say about me that the first thing I thought of was that episode of Ranma 1/2 where, in the dub, Shampoo uses her martial arts to make Akane forget about Ranma, and one of the things she thinks he's referring to when asking if she remembers him is RAM...

And the fact that this was apparently important enough for me to stop and tell people about it. -_-; I think it says I need to do something more interesting with my life.

Anyhow, playing jazz is good fun. I did this thing with a drummer for a bit, was awesome. He was playing without any cymbals or hi-hats. His drumming was almost melodic, it was quite cool. And I was playing a Rhodes through my guitar pedalboard. For the record, my pedalboard contains two fuzz pedals, one of which produces nothing but noise if you play anything more complicated than a fifth, and the other of which sounds like a dying Atari; a Boss distortion I modded to sound like it has a permanently dying battery; and an analog delay.

That was a lot of fun. :smallcool:

That sounds like an amazing setup! I love really stripped-down kits. Occasionally I play with just a snare, a hi-hat and my bass drum and see what I come out with. It's a lot of fun. The drums can be a surprisingly melodic instrument. Someone (I think it was my dad) once told me that drums weren't very melodic so I just played Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies for him. On the drums. Never managed to do it again quite so well, though, and I did try. :smallfrown: And I'd love to get into the whole ridiculous electronic music-y modification thing, pedals and drum machines and all that, but actual drums take up all my money and I am USELESS with anything electronic. ;_;

Battle photographs alone are sobering because they leave the dirt in. My little civilian imagination can't have made that stuff up, and in wondering how all that dirt got there, my mind goes to somber places. As to why slow, somber music is somber, I have less of a clue. Happy music raises or mimics your heartbeat. Improvised music makes your mind strain to make the connections and expands your creativity. Sad music? No idea. . .

Question: How important are table manners in college, assuming a very casual setting? Because I was just splitting a very delicious raspberry tart with my dad and then my dad told me to please sit properly in my chair instead of perching like a bird (Which I always do) with my toes curled on the edge of the chair for everyone to see (Which only happens at home because I actually wear shoes outside the house) and that it's not really proper to lick the raspberry filling off my fingers.

And I appreciate the advice, but I really just want to sit comfortably (For me, anyway) and enjoy my raspberry tart.

So, in college, will people give me odd looks if I study/eat dinner/eat several pounds of confectioneries, chocolates, candies, and baked goods while sitting oddly/not displaying "proper table manners," assuming I'm in my dorm room or something? :smalltongue:

Perching would be quite visible nevertheless, since your knees will be visible above the table surface. Perching on top of the table would just look riddiculous.

Also, I'll join Trobby as someone who prefere his salad raw. I think it tastes fresher that way. Complicated tastes are for the main course (and even there, I then to eat the different components separately).

very. very amazing

also i think my earlier query pays truth to the addage that music makes the moment, take the battle scene for example...

no music= scary
energetic music= avenging army
slow music= this isn't good, the battle is obviously going badly
happy music= obviously the owner of the pov is going crazy or a sociopath

i love soundtrack dissonance, it makes everything eerie, for example i saw a video on youtube of a firsthand experience of 9/11 and the owner of the camera had "this old man" playing in another room. it was creepy creepy.
another example, "End of Evangelion" Komm, süßer Tod anyone?

I'm not sure I'd quite agree with that. I prefer fights (most scenes, really) without music. Slow music, yes; energetic music, maybe; but dissonant music could mean all sorts of things depending on the movie. For example, the last scene in Dr. Strangelove...

Because I could. Now I can, and do, thunder along to Vsnares and it sounds sexy.

I'm not sure I'd quite agree with that. I prefer fights (most scenes, really) without music. Slow music, yes; energetic music, maybe; but dissonant music could mean all sorts of things depending on the movie. For example, the last scene in Dr. Strangelove...

the energetic music would fit best in a fight after the 1st party suffered a horrible loss, then rallied and attacked back(like dolittle's raid after pearl harbor)

the dissonance, yes that's why i love it
