Update - Finished main work, see post #25.
Well, am drawing, anyway. Not sure if this goes in the OOTS forum or here, but Elagune posted his manga here so...

Going to try and finish this tomorrow before lunch. Thinking of making it into a poster sort of thing (you know, the kind where the character stands there in some cool pose and hir name is printed in huge sparkly letters along the side). Would anyone be interested in this as a wallpaper? I'm trying to decide if I should bother scaling it up (currently 708x968px) and redrawing the lines before it's too late.
PS: Does it look gender-ambiguous enough?

Huh. So you did.
It looks great :smalltongue: I'd like to see it properly finished off.

Looks female to me. Good picture though.

Wonderful. I especially like the whispery not-quite-anime style. And it looks gender-ambiguous to me...

Very good!
As a clarification on the "needs less female" thing, I think it'd help if you removed some of the black around the eyes. The whole "eyeliner and mascara" look tends to be decidedly feminine :smallwink:

You could also make the chin a bit wider.

You could also make the chin a bit wider.
In my mind v does look like that, and even though I think shes a woman, if you add things like broad shoulders and a wide chin it creates a definitely masculine result, anyway, we all know that male elf wear make up:smalltongue:

As everyone has already said, your V looks a bit more feminine than ambiguous, but its still a very good drawing.
I cant wait to see the finished version.

Maybe narrow out the eyes' edges a little but yes, that is a wonderful start, love to see it finished.
Would anyone be interested in this as a wallpaper?Yes! I definitely would be!
The drawing looks great so far. I think V looks androgynous enough in it.

Thank you for your kind comments. Unfortunately a friend came over and ate up my morning so I've only managed to enlarge and re-line, make some changes to the head and redraw the skeleton.
It's an elf. It's female by default.

I tried using the suggestions for narrower eyes. I tried making the chin wider, but that didn't quite work out. It's still very, very slightly wider in this version. V also got hir hands on some eye makeup remover and now has no mascara. Lastly, I shrunk V's head by about 10% because it wasn't proportionate to the rest of the body once I got that worked out.

I like it. I tend to think of V as a male, though I am a fan of the more feminine version you have here. Maybe do both?

=P Yeah... But we all know Vaarsuvius is a girl. She boards with the girls whenever they stay at inns. ^^; Obvious off-hand admittance of gender.
Anyways, the drawing is nice. Though the interact between ear and hair makes me nervous. (Since hair obvious goes over the ear but you can still see the ear...)

For the record, I've known many men who roomed with women, and vice versa. It just so happens that the people around here are respectful enough to not try to peek or grope their roommates.
Very well drawn. Even if it's supposedly more feminine, I prefer the first drawing.

I've completed the line art. Veros, the weird ear was because I wasn't done with the lines yet. I do my line work on several layers so I can make changes to clothes/hair without affecting the body. I merge and clean them up later. Anyway, I've completed the line art now. When I sketched the skeleton V's right leg was partially extended (like ze was leaning on the left leg) but I'm not very good with fabric and now it just looks really weird. Will probably delete the 2 wrinkles later.

Try as I might I can't seem to replicate the original look of the face after scaling it up. Instead V now has a layer of shoddily applied eyeliner. It must have something to do with how I can't handle eyeliner in real life either.
http://krysjez.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/compari.gif
I guess when I finish this I'll release 2 files, one with eyeliner on and one with it off. Am thinking of making small changes to hands, neck and chin as well for the more feminine version. Maybe I should just release the PSD with a whole bunch of layers you can toggle on and off depending on what you think V looks like. :smallconfused: Not looking forward to coloring. Maybe I'll just fill it in with flats to avoid tearing my hear out over the chest.
Edit: Oh snap! I left out the cloak.

Anyways, nice drawing, Saeyan. Must've taken a lot of effort.

I really like the way you've drawn the body. It hits spot-on with the androgyny. The hands are very well-drawn, too, and I like the rope belt.
One idea for the face (both new types work well, btw) is to draw the cheek as a smoother line. It looks kinda... bumpy right now. And we all know that elves got baby skin :smalltongue:
Still, very good drawing. It's cool to see the progression :-)

Hehe. V looks like an English teacher, somehow. :D
I suggest making the robe more foldy and wrinkly, especially around the rope belt. Go crazy with it. :P
Also, great hands. Look very fine and delicate. :)

gettin my jibbity jibe?
Not...really...
Glass Mouse, thanks for bringing that up. The hand holding the book was originally not smooth enough to fit with the rest of the blending I'd done. It should be better now. I also smoothed out the cheek (the 'bumpiness' you saw was due to the underlying bone structure from my sketch, but it looks better this way so whatever) and made the chin just a tad more defined to balance out the
Was going to post this as 20/11/10 1444 GMT, but the internet got switched off and blah. Anyway, here it is, something to tide the thread over until I finish the wallpaper sizes:
http://krysjez.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/vvv_merged.jpg
Notes on illustration and background color follow:
The font used is AquilineTwo. 100% manually painted except for runes and sparkles on flame.
Being the forgetful, careless fool that I am, I merged the document before going on to make the final round of changes. What this means is that unless I put in another hour of repainting and erasing, V is stuck on this purple-gray background. At least, it looks purple-gray to me. It's a rather unappealing color. I don't know why I chose it. Probably because I figured V would be on a separate layer from the background.
Stuff I was too lazy to do or fix:
Awkward positioning of shadow on lower body
Shadows on the face
Circlet
One last thing: how does the color look on your monitor? Mine's supposed to be calibrated properly, but my artwork never looks quite the way it's supposed to when I view it elsewhere...

Background colour looks mauve/grey to me so I dare say yours isn't too far out... maybe the order got sent to purple-grey city at some point the same way they spent a while in and around azure city... might explain the colour scheme:smallwink:

Very, very, very, very good! I especially LOVE the lightning effects of the magic. Awesome!
One tiny thing... The neck opening of the dress(thing) looks a but blurry. It would benefit from being sharper defined.
Still... The shadowing/lightning of the drawing - the hair, the clothes, the book, the skin, everything is just... you're awesome.
Oh yeah, and the colours look fine. Of course, I have no idea what it looks like on your monitor, but I know the problem. Me and a friend always disagree on drawings because my monitor is redder than hers :smalltongue:

Lineart was quite wonky, but you have one of those colouring styles that can counter that, so well done. Looks very snazzy, but I feel that the magic glow would show on her skin as well.
On a non-colour related note, I feel that she wouldn't have a neckline that low, more like she'd have a turtleneck-esque collar (:

Good point. Will fix in next update.
Lineart was quite wonky
What do you mean?
the magic glow would show on her skin as well
I painted a small line of magic-colored accents on V near the magic. I agree that the colored light from the magic would probably overpower the local color of the skin, but I kept it small because too many highlights didn't look nice when I tried it out.
more like she'd have a turtleneck-esque collar
B-but I like clavicles! Yeah, I think V'd probably wear something with a high collar in real life.

What do you mean?
I mean they're quite loose and not well defined. Like I said, it's fine because your colouring style manages them well, but if someone else were to colour it they'd have problems, I think (:

I just think that since you've put highlights on the folds of her robe that they'd almost certainly hit her face and neck area as well. Not hugely, but they'd certainly be present.

I like them too, but gotta keep in character (:

quite loose and not well defined
Oh, I see. I've pretty much always done my lines this way, I guess. Maybe they seem that way because they're thin? I can imagine a hard anime cel-shaded style not working out too well with the thickness I used.
[highlights]
I tried, Dizposition, I tried! (an hour ago) But it wasn't nice! :smallfrown:
Anyway, I suppose I'm done for now. I've updated the main post with the fixed-collar-version and wallpaper sizes. This was fun. I look forward to another such thread soon. Maybe Haley...

Oh my. That is truly nice. I love the coloring, especially. The subtle texture and shading and all.
I didn't find the linework wonky, but that may be because mine is a lot worse, so that is VERY good by comparison.
