This first bit is just a little railroady, just to get you all in the same place. Hope you don’t mind too much. I won’t do it again. ;)

It’s a sunny day to day – perfect for starting your Pokemon journeys!
You each had the same thought as you got your savings together, packed some supplies and snapped Pokeballs into the holder on your belt: Professor Oak lives locally, he’ll be able to give some good advice on how to start, right?

The lab is one of the larger buildings in Pallet town, full of exciting –looking machinery and pictures of Pokemon. Many of them you recognise from the countryside or the Pokemon battles on TV, but some you’ve never seen before. They look pretty tough. Professor Oak greets you happily, obviously enthusiastic at seeing older Pokemon enthusiasts who might have better attention spans.

“Come this way, I’ll see what I have to start you off!” he begins, before noticing the two full balls you each have on your belts. “Oh,” he says. “It looks like you’ve got some already. Well, you can have these anyway.”

He pulls out two red devices, which you immediately recognise as Pokedexes. You’d considered buying them already, but they’re not cheap and aren’t usually found in the shops in such a small town anyway. You’d probably have had to go to one of the cities to get one otherwise.

“I suppose you’ll want to be looking for some more Pokemon to catch,” Oak continues. “Well, there are plenty of bug and bird Pokemon in the forests around here. Actually, I know of a den of Nidoran just out of town. I wouldn’t recommend them to younger children before they’d practiced a bit first because they have poisonous spikes, but they’re Interesting Pokemon to start with, learn a wide variety of moves and can grow quite powerful. Here, I’ll mark the location on your maps.”

An hour or so’s walking gets you out of town and into the surrounding woods. The trees rise up high around you, and the sound of birdsong and insects chirping comes from all directions, though you don’t see any Pokemon. Perhaps they’re hiding? About ten minutes’ walk from the Nidoran den, you hear a sound from above. It sounds a bit like a scream, and it’s getting louder. Suddenly there’s a crashing noise in the branches above you and a young man falls into a bush not 5 metres away. Even as he picks himself up, a loud buzzing sounds from the bush...

*diddle-a- diddle-a- diddle-a- diddle-a-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun...*!

Three brownish caterpillar Pokemon with horns wriggle out of the bush, followed shortly by two yellow cocoons. The buzzing, however, is coming from the distinctly unfriendly-looking giant wasp Pokemon with stinger arms...

That guys gunna be bug food if we don't do something. We better protect him! Go Gustave!

Cody grabs a pokeball from his belt and tosses at the endangered man. From it comes a dark blue Totodile. It seems surprised to appear in the midst of the battle but is not bothered by it.

"Flamer, you're up!" He continues, spinning the pokeball around and releasing the Charmander between himself and the Beedrill.

"No. 3!" He finishes, pointing to the biggest bug.

The Beedrill, buzzes angrily and readies its spines before diving towards Ewan...
Straight into a blast of flame from the newly arrived Charmander. It screeches in pain and tumbles into Flamer, stabbing madly at the much smaller fire lizard. It looks weakened and near collapse itself, but in its frenzy the flailing stingers drive deep into Flamer's body. The Charmander lets out a pained cry before falling unconscious as the Beedrill sags to the floor as if unsure of whether to keep fighting or to make its escape while it can...

Meanwhile, on the other side of the bush Shade locks eyes with one of the Weedles approaching the two trainers. As his eyes begin to glow purple, the caterpillar Pokemon's eyes widen and begin to glow, before closing heavily. It begins to make soft snoring sounds.
The other Weedle leaps spikey-head-first at the Gastly and connects, but the sting barely damages Shade's incorporeal body.

Gustave's fist shines bright blue for an instant before rocketting into the Weedle next to him with stunning power. The bug is thrown across the clearing and hits a tree with a tinkle of shattering ice crystals before slumping senseless to the grass. Only the spiracles on its body opening and closing give any indication that it survived.

Lastly, the two Kakuna's shoot sprays of thin, sticky threads at Gustave. One misses (embarrassingly), but the other hits and begins to tangle the little crocodile up.

The Pokeball hits the Beedrill dead on, and the Pokemon glows white before losing its form and being sucked inside the device. The ball rolls backward and forth for a moment before exploding open again and releasing the trapped creature. Unfortunately for the Beedrill, it is released directly next to the approaching Gustave, who unleashes a vicious swipe with his claws, hitting it right in the face and scoring small gouges in the Beedrill's chitin.

The larger Pokemon is dropped to the floor by the blow. Its eyes still gaze up at you, but it seems too battered and exhausted to fight back.

From behind Gustave, one of the Kakunas leaps into the air. It's not very fast on the ground, but apparently it can jump well. Extending a sting from the bottom of its carapace, the bug stabs Gustave in the back, though the tiny crocodile's tough skin deflects much of the damage.

The other Kakuna again attempts to spray the group with sticky threads and again somehow manages to miss.

At William's order, Shade's eyes begin to swirl as the sleeping Weedle thrashes softly. A thin violet mist seems to stream from the Weedles body into the Gastly's mouth before the caterpillar Pokemon lies still.
Beside it, the other Weedle again tries to fend off the attacker by leaping at him horn first but is just as ineffective against the incorporeal Pokemon as before.

Meanwhile, William reaches the fallen Charmander and gently places his hand on him before closing his eyes. For a moment nothing seems to happen, then light glows around the hand and the many wounds scarring Flamer's body begin to become shallower. The Pokemon's eyes flicker open and are obviously relieved to find Ewan and William standing above him.

It seems to happen in slow-motion - Ewan points his finger at the Kakuna on the right and Flamer turns, fire breath building in his throat, just as Gustave thinks he feels ready to do the Ice Punch Cody wanted him to do before. The attacks hit almost simultaneously, and under the onslaught of burning flame and freezing energy, the Kakuna just disintegrates. Shell buckles and flies all over the place, and Gustave is left with stuff he'd rather not consider frozen onto his claws.

In short, it's not a pretty sight.

Cody's Pokeball hits the Beedrill and, stunned as it is at the violent death it just witnessed, the Pokeball doesn't even rock before pinging to indicate a firm capture.

The remaining Weedle and Kakuna seem to share a thought, shooting their sticky strings into the tree branches above and hauling themselves swiftly away, where they quickly blend into the canopy.

The battle is over.

Hey man, are you okay?

He holds out his hand.

I'm Cody and this is my Totodile, Gustave

Toto!

You're lucky my friend and I came along when we did or you would have been in a sticky situation. We just came from Professor Oak's Lab and are on our way to a Nidoran nest up ahead. You're welcome to join us if you aren't too hurt.

Cody looks down at the freshly filled Pokeball holding the fierce Beedrill inside.

Heh, sorry about nabbing that Beedrill out from underneath you like that. If you want it, you can have it. I'm not one for using bug types. I prefer Water types whenever possible. Besides, its no match for Gustave here. If you want this Beedrill you can have it now and then you can give me a cool Water type Pokemon later. Sound fair?

"Anyway, I was trying catch that to use against the rest of them. If you don't want it, sure, I'll take it. I guess I owe you a water type." He continues, looking at the pokeball containing the bug type.

Examining the ball, Ewan finds that the Beedrill's escape has broken one of the hinge pins and overloaded a number of capacitors. It isn't too difficult to replace the broken parts, and soon the Pokeball is back in a working state.
Standard Pokeballs are pretty easily repaired, but you imagine that some of the better-crafted balls may harder to repair in the field. Most towns will have somewhere with specialist tools to make the process easier though.

After your successful fending off of the bug Pokemon you probably feel pretty good - your first real challenge as trainers and you came out on top, and you even got caught a strong Pokemon! You must be on your way to greatness.

A quick orientation of your map and you're on your way to the Nidoran nest. The forest begins to thin out a little and you pass a small clearing on the way. Bird Pokemon fly high over head, but they're too far away to identify and none seem to want to come any closer. Leaves rustle ahead and off to the sides as small Pokemon scamper away at your approach - occasionally you see small purple bodies or striped tails held high, but nothing really close enough to chase.

The nest is only about 30 metres away according to the map when suddenly you hear a shout followed by an avian screech of aggression. The challenge is met by squeals and cries of fear and alarm, then a scream of pain. Through the bushes you can make out flashes of sun off metal, as well as the odd swirl of purple and white. Something's going on there, but it's too far away to see quite what...

As you edge forward, more sounds of fighting continue to come from the clearing ahead until the break through the bushes to see a grisly scene. An unfamiliar-looking steel bird nearly as tall as you sits in the middle of the clearing. One foot pins a recently deceased Nidoran to the ground while the beak tears away strips of flesh. The rest of the small group have retreated back against the edge of the clearing to provide a wall of poisonous spines. Every now and then one lunges forward, trying to stab their horns at the bird, but the points just skitter off the armour. One throws its whole self into the attack and manages to rock the attacker slightly, but a flashing beak strikes it away and leaves the smaller creature crawling back to its family.

Off to the side, a human of about thirty wearing a long greeny-grey army greatcoat stands and watched with satisfaction. He notices you and waves as he realises you're trainers too.
"Just feeding Storm here," he explains. "She gets pretty hungry. Hope you aren't squeamish."

Managing to hold his Chinchou with one hand, Cody reaches into his pocket and scans all the pokemon before him, starting with the large metal looking bird. The fact that this trainer was letting his pokemon hunt others for food didn't really bother him, but it did bother him how unfair the match up was. He addresses the other trainer from where he stands.

Huh, so your Skarmory likes to eat Nidoran? I bet thats a pretty feat when its immune to the Nidoran's poison. Wouldn't it prefer a more thrilling hunt though? Something a little closer to its own size? These little guys look like they are barely worth the fight.

We were going to try catching a Nidoran or two over here but it looks these pokemon have dealt with enough here. I think you should be on your way.

The other Trainer mulls things over for a moment, then starts to look as though he's trying to conceal anger. He doesn't do it very well.

"Hey pal, I was here first and Storm's not finished eating. Who are you to tell me to move on?"

He pulls out two more Pokeballs from belt pouches.

"There are three of you and I've got three Pokemon. How about we each play a round and best of three stays? You first - I'll let Storm teach you to interrupt her lunch!"

Seeing the confrontation brewing between you and the trainer, the Nidoran hunker down in the bushes, waiting to see whether you'll drive the predator away.

Hah! Okay then, lets have a little battle. If we win, lunchtime is over for your pokemon and you give us your word you aren't going to bother defenseless pokemon like this ever again, specifically these Nidoran.

Give me a minute to make sure my friends here don't mind pounding your bullying pokemon into the ground.

Realizing he had just talked his way into a fight (again), Cody looks to the other two trainers. He addresses them quietly so the other trainer can't hear.

Heh, I hope you guys are okay with this. If you don't want to fight thats fine. I can probably get all three of his guys if I have to. Ewan your Charmander has some fire type moves, right? I bet that would totally melt that Skarmory. My Totodile could probably handle it if you don't want to use your Charmander but I would rather save Gustave for something thats weak to his Ice Punch or Water Gun.

"Is he alright there? I didn't think Storm hurt him too badly."
He does look concerned.

Meanwhile, some of the Nidoran slowly approach the group seated on the grass. One, perhaps a little bolder than the rest, edges forward to see what Edison's glowing lures are. Slowly moving closer, his nose almost touches the light before he jerks back again.

Will lays his hands on Gustave. A soft glow can be seen radiating from under his hands, and sweat beads on his forehead...

"That is all I can do for him now. Tomorrow morning I'll treat him again."

Without looking away from the nidoran, Will addresses Tom

Tom, if you need, I do have a potion. I'll be glad to use it on your Ralts."

Tom looks a bit embarrassed.
"Thanks, if you have a spare, I'd appreciate it. I forgot to bring any with me. I have enough to pay you the going rate for it - they're 200 in Pallet, right?"
He opens the Pokeball, depositing Marshall on the grass, then rifles in his pockets for his wallet.
He looks with interest at Will's healing of Gustave.
"Wow, how are you going that?"

Will slowly stands up (to not spook the nidos) and kneels by the ralts. He looks over the wounds, then starts administering the potion to the worst wounds first.

"I'm not sure how I do it, to be honest. I just do it."

"That's awesome. I've heard about psychic people but not met one before. Have you met Sabrina, in Saffron City? You hear stories about how she's supposed to be really powerful."

Thanks for that Will. I think I'm ready to move on whenever you guys are. These Nidoran have been through enough today and capturing them just doesn't seem that appealing to me. If they were water types it would maybe be a different story. What do you guys think?

To Tom: "Interesting. I didn't know other psychics lived in Saffron. I'll have to make my way there someday soon. Thank you for the tip."

To the group: I will be honest. I do wish to capture one, and I'm worried about the injured one. His wounds could draw predators, get infected, or fail to heal properly. He'll be safe inside a ball for a while. Long enough for me to heal him. The problem will be getting him away from the group safely...

Cody stands up slowly and backs away from the Nidoran.

Well whatever you decide to do Will, lets get moving with it. Maybe see if any are inclined to follow us after we leave. I have heard that feeding pokemon can make them more inclined to be caught as well.

"Good Idea, but I lack food. I do have another idea. with some luck, I can put the wounded one to sleep, use my powers to frighten the others off, then capture him. I'll warn you, it could get... icky. "

Will says this while eyeing the remains of the birds meal...

The Nidoran shy away from the ghost Pokemon as it appears - clearly they are not too keen on it. The wounded one moves back more slowly, but is stopped in its track by the Gastly's stare. It shudders a little, then its eyelids begin to droop and it slumps to the ground. It makes a faint snoring sound as its breathing slows to a more restful tempo.

The rest of the pack turn sharply to see their recently deceased friend rise slightly from the floor and begin moving towards them. At first they seem to think the Pokemon wasn't dead, but it soon becomes clear that this can't be. With its hindquarters nearly hanging off and blood leaking from nose and mouth, it makes a gruesome sight, and first one, then the rest of the pack turn and bolt off into the forest, squealing sharply. A few birds clatter from the trees at the sound of the warning calls, flying swiftly away.

Tom grimaces as he hands over the 200 Pokeyen.
"That's pretty sick, man. I'm off. I'm supposed to be meeting a friend in Viridian City to challenge the new gym that's setting up there, and I wanted to save up some money - I've heard there's a Bird Master in town who's willing to teach some really strong flying moves. Maybe I'll see you guys around sometime."

Cody stares wide eyed at Will's display of power and his chosen method of scaring the Nidoran away. However, the fact that Will could do something like that amazed him more than how he did it. He was also more than a little glad to see Tom finally be on his way.

Heh...uh.. wow. Thats pretty...uh.. impressive. I've heard of pokemon who could do stuff like that, but never humans... Can you control...anything?

He shakes his head and adopts his normal attitude...
And can we just get this Nidoran and go? We've been here like all afternoon!

Chin!

Eddison the Chinchou glows brightly at his Trainers outburst.

With the herd gone and the wounded Nidoran asleep, Will is easily able to capture it. The Poke ball strikes it, flashes white energy around it, then falls to the floor where it chimes to indicate a successful capture.

It's a little past lunch time, and your Pokemon look a bit battered after their fights, but also much more confident in their abilities. The walk back to town is quick now you know the way and uneventful.

Back in town you have a number of options:

Your home (if you live here)
Oak's Lab
Poke Mart (Has Poke balls 200y, Potions 300Y, Status Heals 200Y for al types, limited stock of Great balls - 5 in stock at 600Y each, limited stock of PP Ups - 2 in stock at 2000Y each)
Pokemon Centre

Well I know I am going to the pokemon center to get Gustave healed up. Then I might go see Oak to see if he has any advice on finding some cool water types around here, maybe try to find a fishing rod or something.

The Pokemon Centre is fairly new - built in the last few years - and the inside looks bright and modern, all curves and block-colour surfaces. The duty nurse takes Gustave and carries him into a closed off room. About ten minutes later she returns with his Pokeball and inserts it into a machine.
"I don't know if you've been here before, but I'll explain what's happening anyway. I've treated your Totodile's injuries and I'm now flushing a large amount of energy into the Pokeball to hyper-accelerate his natural healing processes. Your Pokemon should be fully healed now."

She takes the Pokeball out and returns it to Cody with a worried-looking smile.
"Take care out there next time, won't you? I hope to see you back safe and sound."

Following the path back to Professor Oak's labs, he looks up happily as you enter the building.
"Oh, how did everything go? Did you catch any of the Nidoran I mentioned? This is Miles by the way, he's on a trainer journey too."

The young man he gestures to looks a little younger than you. Oak seems to be getting some Pokemon ready to give out to new trainers, as a Squirtle sits placidly on the table while he coaxes a timid-looking Bellsprout into a Pokeball. Meanwhile a Growlithe capers around the room with two Eevees, which seem to belong to Miles.

"That Growlithe seems to like Bonnie and Clyde," Oak continues. "I'll tell you what, you said you had a Machop earlier. Most of my new trainers face Brock in Pewter City as their first gym, so if they train that up against some of the normal types it'll give them a leg up on their first big challenge. How about it?"

Miles adjusted his glasses as he examined the pokemon. "Hrm... He looks to be in good health, and has a certian poise to him. I suppose I can always find another machop; the one I have isn't suited to my tastes anyways. Shame he was the only one I could find at the time, but I digress." He said, adjusting his shirt as the collar began to slide off his shoulder before offering a pokeball to the professor. "It's a deal."

Cody walks forward to greet the Professor and introduce himself to the other Trainer.

Hey... Miles was it? I'm Cody and I'm a trainer too. I specialize in water type pokemon. We just got back from a little excursion in the woods. Ended up taking waaaay longer than I would have expected. And I didn't even get any water pokemon out of it.

Hey Professor, do you know where I could get a fishing rod of any kind? With one of those I will be able to reel in some good water types, no matter what kind of body of water it is.

ForteZanzo
2011-02-24, 10:35 PM
Miles tilted his head in response to Cody, turning to attempt eye contact. "Cody, ah. Hi. Water types, you say? Hm... one of my listers is a water type; if we come across any Magikarp, you'll be in competition for them. Fascinating creatures, those; fairly weak initially, but evolve into a behemoth of a pokemon..." he said, adjusting his glasses as he returned his attention to Oak. "On that note, a fishing rod does sound like a good idea, but I'm not sure I'd have the funds for such a thing... Any means of making income around or nearby?"

Drogos
2011-02-25, 01:57 AM
One of your... listers? Whats that? And I wouldn't too much about magikarp. My family has a bunch in our pond. I could have taken one of those with me too when I left home. But they aren't much when it comes to battling.

And uhh your right.. I'm kinda broke too. Making some cash would be nice. Maybe we could battle some people around town to make some?

ForteZanzo
2011-02-25, 11:51 AM
Miles shrugged, his shirt falling off his shoulder. "I have a list. Eevee, Growlithe, Scyther, Bagon, Magikarp and Abra. They are each pokemon that I've studied extensively and ones I seek to have the very best of. For instance, just a Scyther wouldn't do; I need the sharpest of claw, fastest of foot and wing, toughest of carapice, and I'll catch as many as I need to to achieve this perfection. Eevees are the number-one lister though; With their myriad evolution capabilities, this creates an exponentially higher number of possible pinnacles of fitness. Currently they have seven known evolutions, but with enough interaction with the world's materials, who knows how they could react? Definitely something to ponder.

Growlithe is another pokemon that reacts to the evolution stones, becoming what some have said to be a legend of a pokemon, though I think that has more to do with Arcanine's regal appearance than anything. Scyther is somewhat unusual, reacting to metals and, if given the proper circumstances, undergoes an evolution that trades his speed for toughness. Bagon and Magikarp inspire me; both relatively meek creatures initially, yet they achieve greatness as they grow. Bagon even achieves the flight it so often longs for if it can evolve fully.

And finally, Abra is intriguing to observe; he's aware of the world about him despite being in an almost constant state of sleep. And when he evolves, his IQ is said to reach unfathomable heights. Very interesting creature. But then again, all my listers are deserving of my... Obsession, I suppose, in some fashion or another..." he paused for a moment to readjust his shirt.

"...I'm sorry. I suppose that was bit of an overload of information, eh?" he finished with a sigh...

Nah its pretty cool actually. You have your whole team already planned out. Thats pretty awesome. Myself, I'm more of a go with the flow, play with what your dealt type person. Thats not to say that I don't have my favorites though.

Malachite

Oak shrugs. "I don't know where to buy a fishing rod in town, but I'm sure there would be someone who could help you around the coast. There are a couple of fishermen living a few miles south who go out and fish in the Cinnabar straits. Perhaps one of those might help you catch something?"
He frowns as he thinks.
"I think you'd have to check some streams and rivers to find Magikarp though, being freshwater fish. They don't head out to see unless they're getting ready to evolve."
He smiles.
"And frankly, I don't think you really want to tangle with one of those until your Pokemon are much stronger. If you see a Magikarp in the sea, by advice is not to bother it!"

Drogos
2011-02-25, 01:31 PM
Yeah? Thats perfect! Those fishermen are so dedicated they give out rods all the time to aspiring young fishermen like me! Thats where I'm headed next and then to the coast to test it out. Maybe I can get a Tentacool or something.

"Freshwater, you say? Hm..." Miles replied, pondering. "Well, as long as I hang around this one, finding interesting water-types should be simple enough." he finished, adjusting his glasses as he glanced back at Cody. His attention then turned to the growlithe.

"So, like, do I get a pokeball to put this little dude in?"

Malachite
2011-02-26, 04:19 PM
Oak rolls his eyes and nods, smiling at his forgetfulness.
"Of course, sorry. It's that one on the end of the table. Now, come on, get in. It's not dangerous..." he continues, the Bellsprout being even less cooperative. He sighs.
"I'm not sure this Pokemon is really suitable for a new trainer. If you catch any on your travels which you think would be suitable for a ten year old to begin with, the government gives me a limited budget to pay catching fees to trainers. I could probably offer about 1000 per Pokemon depending on suitability and strength. You can do that from any Pokemon centre's transfer/storage facilities too, if you're interested."

Oh that sounds like a pretty good plan. I think we should go out somewhere where theres a pond or something and catch some water's edge pokemon. Theres all sorts of types out there. Then turn anything we don't want to keep into cash!

ForteZanzo
2011-02-26, 09:32 PM
"Hm... That sounds like quite a plan, professor; I am likely to go through droves of pokemon before I obtain the ideal and prime..." Miles comments, turning his attention to Cody. "I don't suppose you'd mind a partner to tag along with?" he asked, approaching the pokeball on the table as he spoke. Swapping it for the pokeball that contained Machop, he smiled a bit before turning to the Growlithe.

Pressing the ball's button, he shot the creature with a beam of light, drawing the creature back into its dwelling. Miles paused for a moment as he thought up a name. Snapping his fingers with his free hand, he tossed the ball a short distance ahead, releasing the dog-like creature once more. "I'll call you Apollo. Should be a fitting name, especially when you evolve into the so-called 'Legendary' pokemon." he said with a chuckle.

"Growl..." Appolo replied, calmly, his nose perked into the air.

"Ee!" cried Bonnie.

"Vee!" barked Clyde.

Both were excited to see the return of their new companion and the three began running about again.

"I suppose I should get these ones outside if they're to continue playing. I could use a walk anyway...

...

Oh, before I go... Professor, do you happen to know where one might acquire evolutionary stones? I imagine they have somewhat of a rarity to them, but I will eventually need them if I'm to bring these fine pokemon to their next stage of evolution..."

Malachite
2011-02-28, 11:28 AM
Professor Oak rubs his chin as he thinks.
"You're right, they are rare. It's difficult to tell were you might find each one, but some places get them more commonly than others. Miners at Mount Moon occasionally dig one or other of them up, and I know you get fire stones near the top of Cinnabar Volcano. Celadon department store tries to keep some in stock, but so many trainers want them that they've put the prices through the roof in the last few years."
He shrugs.
"Your best bet is probably to ask around. I'm not an expert on geology. Pewter and Cinnabar City both have centres with geologists and archaeologists who might be able to help."

"I see. Well, thanks then. I'm off for a walk..." Miles said, making his way out, his three companions following along...
