View Full Version : New Year's Resolutions!

In the spirit of the holiday, and like last year, I felt we should have a Resolutions thread to be separate from the general discussion thread (again, like last year, if memory serves). Quincunx, if you're reading this, sorry I stole your thunder, since I recall you were the resolution lady for 2010.

My personal resolutions:
-Cut back on my profanity. I'm basically a sailor without a ship in regards to my swearing sometimes. Gotta cut down on that.
-Focus on positivity more. I've got a bad habit of seeing the negative in things, not the positive.
-Find a relationship. I'm tired of being single, and I think it's time to try my hand at the dating scene again. I'd like to share my time with someone special, that's something I dearly miss.
-Find work. :smallsigh:
-Be less angry. I get too angry sometimes. Need to take a deep breath and walk away from stuff sooner (like poker, and this forum).

What about you fine people?

-Write more
-Do more art
-Practice music more often
-Get more exercise
-Get out of the house more

Basically, stop being so lazy and get things done.

Drink less alcohol.
Be positive more.
Be grouchy less.
Get better job.

Add "try" in front all of those and we'll call it a day.

No. Do or do not. There is not try.

I think my resolution is just write more and exercise more. Can't really think of anything else.

I hate that saying. :smalltongue: Sometimes, you do your best. And then you fail anyway. So 'try'.

Eat healthier foods.
Practice musics more.
Get a job.
Stop being negative completely.

This kind of logic is exactly what I mean. Some things are strictly impossible, or so unlikely that no amount of belief can save you.

Look, most of this is Yoda's fault anyway. I don't think we should even acknowledge his logic.

Graduate from high-school with at least a 9.0 average (note this is a MUST)
Enter a good college (hence the last resolution)
Get a good grade on the IB

Get in shape and do sports
Return to writing.
Stop being so lazy.

-Exercise and work out more so I can be healthier and more muscular
-Keep eating healthier and try some new foods, while cutting back on junk food.
-Keep my grades up in college, hopefully even getting a few A's this time around.
-Try to find a job so I can start saving up for later on, like when I get out of college and need an apartment.

That's all for now. :smallconfused:

I've only thought of three so far, which are as follows:

- Put a new song on my ipod every day
- Put a new album on my ipod every week
- Try vegetarianism for a month

This is the first year I've actually done resolutions, so here's hoping I can actually keep them.

Since I never keep a New Year's resolution and i don't even know anyone who kept one for more then 2 days..
I always try to keep it simple

- Party heavy and a lot

But then again never kept a New Year's resolution for more then 36 hours...

Actually, I believe trying is one of the greatest acts possible; the inhabitants of the Star Wars universe have no idea what they're talking about.
Especially Yoda :smalltongue:

I plan on writing more, reading more and drinking less; possibly not necessarily in that order.
I also plan on doing a bit of travelling and more socialising (though I've done that quite a bit this year).

Be more helpful to those around me, starting from close friends and relatives and moving outwards.
Write my thesis, therefore completing my postgraduate degree in Criminal Law.
Maintain and increase my "exercise" and "eat healthy food" schedule.
Be more optimistic.
Advance my career.
Participate in more, quality RPGs with rl and online friends.

And what's more, be a better person overall, according to my personal religious beliefs, inspiring others by demonstrating good behaviour, compassion, warm feelings, calm and polite behaviour and maintaining a proper life example. This is a hard one, but hopefully i'll make one more step in the right direction this year.

I'm starting my application for army officer training this year so my big ones centre around that: stop eating all that pizza, get in super shape, develop currently stunted social skills & be more decisive.

Beyond that: get a mark of 80% on my dissertation, I want that high mark dissertation so bad I'd eat a child to get it :smalltongue:

A quick word of warning to all those resolving to "Get a Boy/Girlfriend". Looking for the relationship is a horribly depressing battle to fight. Resolve to date more, socialise more, ask out that special someone or meet new people if you must but don't put the relationship on your shoulders now.

I mean if it works out: Great! but if you don't meet anyone you're suited to one of two things will happen. You'll date them anyway and be miserable or you won't and feel miserable that you didn't get into a relationship...and neither will be your fault.

I would just add that I am also in the position of single and bored of it right now but all I resolve is to give myself more opportunities. Both romantic and otherwise.

Happy new year everyone

I usually don't do New Year's Resolutions, but this year I've thought about it and I've decided, although it would be nice if it worked, setting vague goals like "be more active" and "eat healthier foods" and "do better at college" are doomed to failure. In order for a resolution to work, it has to be something concrete and be short term or have a short term element, otherwise you (or I, anyway) just give up on it!

So:
Go swimming this week and next week.
Organise a schedule around my college timetable to swim at least once a week thereafter.
Cut down treats (chocolate, mostly) to strictly one per day, excepting genuine special occasions.
Make a proper desk space in my bedroom and keep it tidy.

Thufir
2011-01-01, 07:20 PM
Basically, stop being so lazy and get things done.

This one kind of applies to me. Only it's not so much a new year's resolution as a general resolution which I made a couple of months ago.

9. Cut down the snark, cynicism and sarcasm.

Why would you want to do that?

I concur. Getting into a relationship should not be a resolution unless you have someone specific in mind already. And in that case, why wait until new year before resolving to do it?

The main thing which springs to mind for me is just trying to socialise with my friends more.

I shall merely continue with a consistent policy of self-improvement I've been employing, with excellent results, for the past two or three years. I cannot plan at the best of times, so beyond broad brushstrokes I'm not even going to attempt to make a resolution before I know what exactly needs to be resolved.

AshDesert

For the last few years I've decided that I'm going to set 3 reasonably attainable goals I know I can do that will still require effort from me, and 1 unrealistic goal that I'm going to try for, but probably not succeed. Even if we can't achieve perfection, why not strive for it, right?

My real resolutions:

1) Get in shape
2) Finish high school and start college on a strong note, preferably all A's, but that's not gonna happen at college.
3) Help people in any way I possibly can without asking for anything in return. I'm somewhat starting on this, but this is just something I adopted very recently, so I'm counting as a New Year's resolution to get seriously started on this.

My utterly unattainable (for me at least) resolution:

Write a new, complete song (lyrics and everything) every two weeks.
