I can't seem to find any rules for 3.5/pathfinder that allow an unmounted character to knock/pull another character off of their mount. Bull rush and trip seem like the obvious things to do, with a military saddle giving it's bonus to ride checks to stay in the saddle to avoid being dismounted, but that's about all that I can think of.

Any ideas?

You could trip the mount.

You can just trip the rider.

Tripping a Mounted Opponent

You may make a trip attack against a mounted opponent. The defender may make a Ride check in place of his Dexterity or Strength check. If you succeed, you pull the rider from his mount.

from here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/specialAttacks.htm#trip).

However... skill checks are much better than ability checks, so you had better be an amazing tripper.

RAW, you must pass a DC5 Ride check or fall every time you take damage. Thus, you would dismount someone by hitting them with your weapon and hoping they have no ranks in the skill and horrible luck.
Grappling the rider and moving the grapple off the mount is also a way to do it.

Disabling the mount in any way would work - in one game session our sorcerer used a sleep spell to take down a warhorse with an enemy fighter on it's back. Warhorses don't have very good will saves.

Exactly what kind of moron would attempt mounted combat when they have don't have enough ranks in ride + dex bonus to pass a DC 5 check? Heck, you'd need to be pretty unlucky to have no DEX bonus, no ranks and still fail the check.

Nevertheless, that is the mechanic given.

Hmm. It might be a nice houserule to say the DC to stay mounted is [Damage dealt].

Though that would make it near-impossible at high levels.

Paralyzing or otherwise knocking the mounted character out of comission will give a percentage chance of them falling out of the saddle, so dex damage is another possibility.

Though, if they're taken out uin that way, it's kinda moot to get them off of the mount with any kind of urgency at that point unless the mount would really get away with them.

Funnily enough, the time when the group sorcerer cast sleep on the horse was when the rider was trying to leave. It made him fall out of his saddle and come back to try and whup us. It didn't help he was a level 8 fighter with an enchanted two handed sword - all of us were only level 3 or 4 IIRC. Of course we had goblins, a goblin spellcaster and an imp to contend with at the same time. If the DM didn't forget the fighter got extra attacks per round for the first few rounds of combat we might have been TPK'd.
