View Full Version : [D&D 3.5] Creature Prices

I've searched far and wide for places where I can find prices for creatures but all sites come up short. Other than those specifically mentioned in the MMs, is there any place where I could find prices for things other than animals?

One of my players loves the idea of having a "poison farm" with various poison-producing creatures and plants. The plants I can figure out, but not the creatures.

Any help would be appreciated.

This (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152033) was my thread from a while ago, I'm sure you can gleam some useful info from it as it mainly goes by HD.

Some books (Races of stone springs to mind) gives the cost of certain animals, and certain monster entries on tameable creatures do the same. Otherwise you can always find the cost of a creature of similar strength and use that.

Good thread, but I'm also looking for sources for non-animal or beat creatures.

EDIT: Good guidelines though. I just don't want to try and "do it myself" if someone already covered it. This rogue my player has likes giant bees for example.

At the end of my thread irreverent fool mentioned simply making the cost whatever it would cost to magically gather them, but this is setting dependent. You could also ask your DM to include it in the campaign/needstoread

Since, you are the DM, and what he is trying could easily be abused, I suggest making him need to gather some of these creatures himself, if he wants them so badly.

Well, similar formula would apply. The beauty of that system I devised is that it is based on HD. Everything has HD, and I also included raising the gold multiplier based on rarity. I'd imagine beasts or poison plants would be pretty rare and would require a specialist shop to obtain them.(=raising multiplier sine they are rare)

Trust me, I searched for a LONG time, no one has covered it thoroughly, at least not in English... that I could find. Your best bet otherwise is using prices listed, which does not include 97% of D&D creatures/plants/beasts/whatever.

Drow of the Underdark has rules for milking poison out of vermin (and general vermin handling), so there might be something there.

Forge of War gives the price to produce warforged, but I gather your friend is not looking to start his own creation forge. :smalltongue:

Hmmm, maybe look up the cost of the poison the creature produces and multiply that by ten. The player then also needs to buy equipment for harvesting the poison, needs to support their farm and be careful when handling the creatures (giant bee dies after it stings for example).

Lemme tell ya, that is fun stuff!

It's a she, a drow she.

And I actually WANT her to try and abuse the system. Nobody EVER plays with poisons (evil and stuff), and I'd like to see what all the fuss is about, considering you don't have to sacrifice much in order to benefit from them but have to sacrifice a LOT if you want to be really good at them.

It's not like the wizard and the druid are worse at dealing ability damage.

PS: I like my characters having options. At level 3, she has ONE hit die, and not much to do in combat. Since poison DC doesn't really ever go up unless you breed better creatures, and they have a lot of downtime, I was thinking of making this "farm" part of her character.

Np, but would of been best to mention that earlier, as that is not the usual approach.

A wise man(named TerishD) over at AD&D forums once told me an important thing "Solve problems through roleplay, not rules" So.... following suit with that

Rather than complex pricing and such; here is what I'd do, since you want her to have this farm that is*

I'd add in a poison farmer of sorts, that is looking for an apprentice, after he teaches her all she needs to know(since she is so weak, I'd rule in some extra poison related skill points as part of this training), she beings to manage part of the farm herself. Now, you can either leave it at that or you could say.... have the master killed/mamed/tortured/abducted/poisoned/insertothercommonbutbrutalD&Dplotdevicehere and VOILLA instant plot point, and oh yah, now she has full ownership of the farm.

Was about to link to that myself :P

I've read it and also passed it to the player so she can have a general idea of what she can do, but she's bad at optimizing and I'm bad at telling people what to do, so I want to, at least, be able to tell her if she approaches a market, what weird or rare venomous creatures she can buy.

I also ask because I'd like the characters to use land mounts and flying mounts before teleporting becomes cool, since this is RARELY explored in campaings.

Your HD guide is of great help theos, now I'm concerned about the special abilities though.

Thanks, and I should really clean that up and repost it for professional review. What special abilities do you mean?

Drow special abilites are actually one of those things that may want him to oppose LA buy off though as the SR actually scales with HD.

Let's say they find a land based creature that can breathe fire, or eats rock and produces milk. A system that takes those into account other than HD.

I suppose we could "grade" those abilities as extra HD.

Also yes, I'm opposed to LA buyoff for abilities that scale and instead encourage players to take feats and other classes instead that strengthen their innate abilities.

I prefer the Savage Progression version (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20040213a): Start out weaker but LA +0, and if you want all the Drowish bells-and-whistles, you can take those later as racial template levels, or just ignore them.
