Additional ideas welcome!

And for those who are wondering what really happens at these Meetups, you can take a peak at last years by checking out My Youtube Channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/Wraith28k), which contains several videos from last years Meetup.

Where: Johnson City, TN.

- Festivities traditionally begin at the Hippie Hut. PM smellie_hippie (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/member.php?u=12325) for address/directions.

Notes from smellie_hippie on choosing a place to stay:

1. We have considered the idea of using ONE hotel for all of the guests who have not already made arrangements with locals. I will elaborate as to why we think this might be beneficial.
1-a. We may be able to save on cash with a reservation of a BLOCK of rooms.
1-b. Said hotel may have a conference room and a pool. (remember how hot the hippie hut was last year?)
1-c. We can have more accurate maps if everyone is travelling from only one designated hotel to any of the other activities (ropes, mid-city, the hut and the igloo)
- Local hotels (with reviews by our very own smellie_hippie):

-- Best Western (http://www.bestwesterntennessee.com/)
--- Decent hotel, easy access right off I26, very close to all planned events.
-- Carnegie Hotel (http://www.carnegiehotel.com/)
--- very nice hotel but also VERY EXPENSIVE, spa facilities available, very easy access right across the street from ETSU (central location in Johnson City)
-- Comfort Inn (http://www.comfortinn.com/hotel/tn444)
--- This hotel was close access to previous Hippie Hut, and was frequented by previous meet-up attendees. Easy access and very decent proximity to local planned events
-- Comfort Suites (http://www.comfortsuites.com/hotel-johnson_city-tennessee-TN264?promo=gglocal)
--- I believe this hotel is a little less accessible. Close to I26, but might need some additional directions...
-- Courtyard (Mariott) (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/trijc-courtyard-johnson-city/)
--- Brand new hotel, so likely to be costly. Fairly easy access and fair proximity to events.
-- Days Inn (http://www.daysinn.com/DaysInn/control/Booking/property_info?propertyId=04490&as_srp=SP2&cid=carat_search-Days_Inn)
--- Stay Away!! (But I'll leave it up here as a last resort)
-- Doubletree Hotel (http://www.doubletreejohnsoncity.com/)
--- Decent hotel, easy access with good proximity to events. A little more costly because they have indoor/outdoor pool facilities.
-- Econo Lodge (http://www.econolodge.com/)
-- Hampton Inn (http://www.hamptoninnjohnsoncity.com/)
-- Holiday Inn (http://www.holidayinn.com/hotels/us/en/johnson-city/jncws/hoteldetail?&url=true&stopredirect=true&cm_mmc=mdpr-_-googlemaps-_-hi-_-jncws&dp=true)
-- Holiday Inn Express (http://www.hiexpress.com/hotels/us/en/johnson-city/jncjc/hoteldetail?&stopredirect=true&dp=true)
-- Jameson Inn (http://www.jamesoninns.com/)
-- Quality Inn & Suites (http://www.qualityinn.com/johnson_city-tennessee-hotels?promo=gglocal)
-- Ramada Limited (http://www.ramada.com/Ramada/control/Booking/property_info?propertyId=12383&cid=carat_search-Ramada)
-- Red Roof Inn (http://www.redroof.com/)
-- Sleep Inn & Suites (http://www.sleepinn.com/hotel-johnson_city-tennessee-TN259?promo=gglocal)
-- Super 8 Motel (http://www.super8.com/Super8/control/Booking/property_info?propertyId=03207)
-- Value Place (http://www.valueplace.com/)

- Local Playgrounders with possible sleeping space:

To be determined.

When: 24-26 June 2011. Last weekend in June!

Why: Do I really need to answer this?

How: GPS is useful, also maps or directions from the locals or frequent visitors.

There is no admission fee, but donations are appreciated!

LET THE PLANNING BEGIN!

Mark me down as a "probable" for this year. I'm REALLY trying to get to a few specific events, and this is on the list. Can't guarantee anything, but I'm damn interested in coming.

Also, out of curiosity, why is the Trogland meet-up not organized by the namesake? :smallconfused:

I'M IN!

Almost absolutely confirmed. Might be a little hard with a wedding to attend the month before, but I should be able to handle it.

@^ Because this particular one is actually ten hours away from its namesake.

They started naming it after me because for some odd reason they name the U.S. after me too. I have no idea how these sorts of things stick around honestly.

@^ Because this particular one is actually ten hours away from its namesake.
16 hours, actually.

Also, I'm planning on attending as well if all goes according to plan and such.

First post updated through this post. Just let me know if anything changes status-wise guys!

I'll definitely be trying to attend! Depends very much on what sort of funding I'll have left after A-KON. Will definitely find some way to do make it if Mauve does. I can't pass up on an opportunity to see her, I hardly get to now as it is. =P

I suppose it is somewhat to our shame that we locals hadn't already started this thread, so I'll accept the interloper's actions. (j/k LightWraith) :smallamused:

Actually, I haven't posted anything on the forums in quite some time...hmm...

Anyway, it's that time again! Woo-Hoo! You all have made this meetup awesome every year, and I'm greatly looking forward to this one (as always)!

On some more serious/planning notes...

Notes on "When":

Officially, this is only Friday/Saturday/Sunday of the last weekend in June (the 24-26 this year). That said, we're always glad to hang out with the early arrivers who may get in on thursday.

Notes on "What":

At the Hippie's request, we haven't actually been *doing* the ropes course the last couple of years. Since he's the only one certified to run it, it is exhausting and day-eating for him. We will, however, most likely use the grounds as our own private hang-out for the day. Kubb and (as of last year) Cash-N-Guns Live are popular pastimes, and there's a small shelter house and plenty of shade to lounge in. Hippie will need to confirm its availability, however.

On that note, we're still discussing the feasibility of the saturday cookout this year. If we do decide to have a big, joint meal of some type on saturday afternoon, we will probably be asking for donations ahead of time this year. That way someone doesn't have to take all the money and go shopping in the middle of the meetup (as the Hippies have done) - it can all be taken care of beforehand. More on that later.

Notes on "Where":

Last I spoke with the Hippies, their place was still slated as the Meetup-Point on Friday. Depending on the size of this year's group however, we have been discussing options for other, future locations. This might be a bit too much presumptive foreshadowing, but this event may eventually require a bit more organization in terms of what's going on where and when...

Finally, on the "locals with space" front. It has been my pleasure every year to have some cool people crash on my floors, my couch and my spare room. You all have been awesome weekend-roomies. Unfortunately, this year, The Igloo is probably out as a local crash site as it will be home to a 1-month-old at the time. The Bardic Bunny and I are expecting our first Bunguin in May.

Grumble grumble forum ate my post last night... grumble.:smallannoyed:

*blink blink*

What am I doing? This is the SE Meet-up thread!! There's no grumbling here!!

Yes, it's that time again! Pack your card games and whatnot, and prepare for awesomeness and candid photography! It's time for the SE Trogland Meet-up V! (That's the one where we beat up Dolph Lundgren... right?)

As Penguinsushi just mentioned, we have a few sugegstions to try and make this year run even smoother...

2. Again as mentioned in the previous post, some thought has been given to "pre-registration". The thought behind this was to do any of the shopping for the ropes course grilling and the Sunday windown at the igloo. Buying the stuff in advance will help cut down on any of the need for locals to leav mid-game to buy groceries and prep food. I will still be grilling at the ropes course, but we are currently endeavoring to improve the speed...

So come one, come all
Come to SE Trogland and have a ball!
Bring your kids and bring your spouse
Not sure it's fun? click here with your mouse!

Plenty of beer and probably tea
Drink too much and you'll have to go pee
Don't ask me why I'm writing like this
Just want you to know how much fun you would miss.

Updated the first post again, up to this post.

Let me know if there is anything I missed. Looking forward to this summer!

I agree that it makes a lot of sense to do a sort of "pre-registration", so that the amazing locals don't have to leave during the middle of the meetup to take care of all the random stuff that we need. If y'all have a plan for that, just let me know and I'll add it to the first post.

*ponders*

I wonder how much it'd cost in gas money to get there from California...

Philistine
2011-02-05, 06:30 PM
Depends on what kind of mileage your ride gets, and on where in CA you're driving from.

I would seriously look into flying, which will be much faster and easier, and may even be cheaper for a single traveler - especially if you'd be stopping at hotels and/or restaurants along the way. It's 2200+ miles/36+ hours of driving, plus any stops, from the LA area - a bit farther from SD, or quite a bit farther from SF. If you live inland you'll be able to cut some off of that, of course, but still!

RabbitHoleLost
2011-02-05, 06:34 PM
I know, with driving MY car (granted, Sunshine likes to drink like a sailor on land), it cheaper to fly if I'm diving anywhere over six hours of travel time.
Believe it or not, Moff- flying isn't THAT expensive, especially if you buy the tickets ahead of time.

Penguinsushi
2011-02-05, 06:39 PM
....or you could make the drive and probably pick up several additional Playgrounders on the way...

...granted, you'd probably have to leave on Monday...

Like I would pass this up. It should be especially easy for me to manage this year since it isn't right at the end of the month. The store I work at does a big "event" on it's anniversery every year and it's always iffy trying to ask those days off. This year I'll back well enough in time for it and won't have to deal with that uncertainty.

I be there. Will be there. Will haven been there. Whatever. Point is, Trogland hell yeah.
So I guess same deal as before? I was thinking we should stay through Sunday and just leave Monday morning this year. Since we didn't get going until way too late last year, I thought this would be a little better.

Also, partly because of this line of thought, I already wasn't planning on taking up Penguinsushi's couch, which has since become unavailable. Isn't it nice when everything works out?

For those interested, I am checking into details at the Doubletree hotel. (review available through link inf the first post). I will find out about room rates, discounts for groups and the availability of the conference room they have.

If those coming who need rooms, please let me know as soon as possible, so I can book things before we have some other crappy convention trying to muscle into our space.

Also, if anyone knows of other discounts that might help, AAA, AARP, Military, etc... please let me know.

And this year we actually won't be Quarto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarto_%28board_game%29)-less. It only took over two years after getting my clock cleaned by PXP, but I've finally got a board!

@ His Hippiness: I will need a room, so count me in for whatever we end up doing at the Doubletree. I'll probably keep a room to myself, but I'd be open to bunking up with someone if that is the only way they can afford to join us.

My USA Triathlon membership might provide me with some kind of discount, I'll have to check it out and get back to you though.

Pssh - Sounds like an excuse to me.

How far do I drive every year....Let's see.
Minneapolis MN - Johnson City TN ~ 17h 45m

So no complaining about drive time. Trust me - the fun you will have > 18 hours in a car. :smallwink:

That being said - with the eyesight stuff I'll probably fly in this time. Driving at night is not fun right now.

Put me down as a probably/maybe. Definitely want to go, just checking on finances & wife's ability to travel at that time due to her new job.

I'm just getting back to the Playground after about an 18-month hiatus, but I may try to make it to the Meet-Up again. I had a great time back in 2007.

As for hotels, I can tell you that the Days Inn (that's the one with the attached Indian restaurant, right?) is not a great place, but it's not a TERRIBLE option either. I booked late last time and that's where I ended up. The room was cheap, it was in close proximity to most of the Meet-Up locations, and it wasn't as dirty or scary as I feared. But yeah, I'd try to get somewhere else if possible.

I guess I'm in as a Maybe.

Also, as a note, I'm gonna be in Johnson City for an academic conference at ETSU from March 25th to 27th. Maybe I'll see some of you locals then? (Might try to take my fellow students and professor to Mid City Grill for dinner one night, too.)

Since it just wouldn't be a Meetup without it:

I could be convinced to bring my Wii with Rock Band 3 and the full spread: drums, 2 guitars, vocals. Since we've still got a bit of time there's plenty of time to work out the logistics...

...and I suppose I should probably get to work on the Wheel of Troubleshooting for Paranoia...you know, just in case...:smallamused:

Hm...I've got Smash Brothers for Wii, as well as a 360 with most of the fighting games in existence either downloaded to it or in disc form. If, y'know, people are down for that.

Also, I'm officially offering my services to ferry people from the Virginia area to the meetup. This is pretty much the only way I'm going to go, is if people need rides, since, well, it's a boring, boring trip otherwise.

I know, with driving MY car (granted, Sunshine likes to drink like a sailor on land), it cheaper to fly if I'm diving anywhere over six hours of travel time.
Believe it or not, Moff- flying isn't THAT expensive, especially if you buy the tickets ahead of time.

I'll be coming this year. I''ll probably be going Greyhound or by train depending on what works best for me. But one way or another, I'm going to be here.

That's right. Helgraf is making a meet-up. Mah very first.

3 1/2 correction, 4 1/2 months to go... :smallsigh:

I expect I'll probably need a room - since I'm a complete stranger to everyone irl except 'larra, Zeb and Pudding Troll.

On the other hand, next year I'll have finished my degree and be the big twenty-one, so I will certainly definitely try to make it next year. Actually it's almost a certainty as one of my friends has relatives with a house in Trogland and we were planning a fortnight there anyway.
Just better hope my exam dates don't clash with the meet-up. And that I can get a cheap enough flight. And get over my crippling fear of planes, and figure out how to book/buy/check for cheap ones.

Hey everybody! I'm so excited you are already planning your yearly vacation to the wonderful Land of Trog, otherwise known as Southeast Trogland. To your left, you will see the fields of Kubb, with their flowing grasses and historic Igloo. To your right, is the mushroom shaped Hippie Hut, full of cool liquid refreshment.

This year, they have predicted a full moon for the event (pending the Emperor's arrival), and a cute little Bunguin, the youngest of attendees this year.

For your viewing pleasure, we are considering adding the Little City Roller Girls to our Saturday evening event. click here (http://www.littlecityrollergirls.com/history/) to see the adventure we are talking about. I'd love to know if there is enough interest. This would be one of the events with pre-purchased tickets...

Roller Derby = AWESOME!

As a season ticket holder to the MN Roller-Girls, I fully love and endorse this sport. Nothing beats girls on skates beating the crap out of each other as they travel 8-10 mph in a confined circle. Whether or not I can make - I too support doing this as an activity.

One point of clarification to Indy - In the movie WHIP IT - that was curved track Roller Derby - noted by the angled track and rail to protect the spectators from a RG (roller-girl) from falling in their lap. The Little City Roller Girls is flat track (no rail/angle) which means if you sit trackside, you may end up with one on your lap. Which reminds me - the 1st rule of Roller derby - Don't spill your beer.

I'm still figuring out the details on whether or not I can make it this year.

Absolutely. Thank you Jared. This is simply an additional option, and for the most part does not disrupt any of our well-established schedule of fun and activities. It is a nice coincidence that there is a local bout on the same weekend, but that is all. We bring it up now because advance tickets are $10 where as door tickets are $12.

The added bonus of trying to coordinate "housing" at a single hotel or staying with locals will make map creation much easier. Those who would like to go are welcome, those who would not will not be limited to other options, since we can illustrate all of our activites on a single map (maybe even drawn to scale!)

So who else is going to get a room at the Best Western? It sounds like the best place for all those without a local to room with.

I do suggest not staying at the red Roof Inn that is also nearby. I stayed there last year, and was thoroughly not impressed.

Though, if no one cares to get rooms closely huddled together, I may get one at the Carnegie. :smallamused:

I believe there was talk of group rates at the Doubletree Hotel. Has there been any updates in that department?

Zeb The Troll
2011-03-16, 01:50 AM
As Penguinsushi just mentioned, we have a few sugegstions to try and make this year run even smoother...

I will still be grilling at the ropes course, but we are currently endeavoring to improve the speed...Indeed! Sushi? Hippie?

That is still the intention. Calling these folks sends me through a phone network of unreliable and uninformed people. I have been trying to remember that I need to go to the hotel and speak with a manager there in person. I should have an update on this plan by the weekend.

This will include room-rates, availablility of conference room for Friday night... and accessibility to pool facilities.

Just to let everyone know, I am still checking into prices for group rates at some of the hotels in the area.

The standards I have set are as follows:

1. Must be a fairly decent place, and as a "native" I feel confident in my abilities with a walk-through at determining which places are decent and which seem less so...

2. Group Rate. I am checking into prices and discounts for group rates. I think we were looking at needing 6-10 rooms, but I am not certain.

3. Conference room. For those who were here last year, the hippie hut did well with accomodating everyone, but our poor air conditioner was not up to the task. We may need a good sized venue fro Friday night, but Saturday night is still spoken for.

4. Location. I am hoping to make it easier for everyone coming to have just a few locations they need to know how to get to. With only a few spots, I may even be able to draw a better map this year!

5. Pool. This is optional, but since last year was so hot... I thought it might be a nice feature.

So this one time I missed everyone on the boards and thought I'd visit and see if there were any adventures (now that I'm out of college, it's more feasible). And sure enough this is still going on. But then I realized I'm running a show here in my new home in Pennsylvania.

But I wanted to say have fun and I miss all of you and our random adventues terribly!

Maybe I'll even start posting again.

One of the biggest complaints I heard about board game night on Friday night was that there were times whenever most people would be in games and a few folks (especially new arrivals who showed up after games started) would be sitting out until new games began.

The official Llama of OOTSCON is working to alleviate that problem by bringing more small quick games such as Zombie Dice (fitting for the new zombie capital of the world) and We Didn't Playtest This at All to the meet-up. Since I'll be bringing WDPTAA, I expect Introbulus to be joining us.

Also, due to a new ordinance passed by Johnson City, pink elephant gift wrap is banned within the limits of Johnson City. Please be safe and leave all pink elephant gift wrapping at home. We don't want any incidents with the police.

Speaking of new dice games...I'll be bringing Cthulu Dice. Everyone's favorite Eldritch Horror, now in polyhedral form! A game finishes in not even 15 minutes most times.

I'm not sure how great BSG would be while drunk. However, trying to deny one's status as a Cylon (whether truly or deceptively) could only get more hilarious to watch as the BAL* rises.

One of them is going to have a new baby in it come next month and the other, I believe, gave away all available floor space by about the first week after this thread was started.

As is being discussed in the GenCon thread, though, rooming up with someone at a hotel might not be prohibitively expensive.

And on that note, we have decided that the Double Tree hotel can suck it. They have not tried to contact me back about room rates/discounts/conference room/etc.

We are leaning towards either the Comfort Inn & Suites (which is close to the old hippie hut) and the Holiday Inn (not express, it's 20 minutes away). I am still unsure how many rooms we need to try and reserve, because I don't know what the roommate arrangement are. Those of you who are thinking/planning on co-habitating for the weekend, please let us know (here or via PM) so I can finish these last details.

Also wanted to remind folks that any contributions they wanted to make towarsd food purchase for the weekend would be greatly appreciated (like towards the first weekend in June). We hope to have as much advance prep finished to avoid any unnecessary shopping and such...

Baw. But yay for baby, I suppose. In that case, I'm bumped down from the 98% sure I was to about 80%. But if someone wants a roommate for a hotel, let me know.

I don't know that we have a set dollar amount... because that sounds too much like a "registration fee". This is our first attempt at this change-up, and it's not really been completely thought out. We don't want someone to contribute $100 and then have them feel short-changed when others only chip in five bucks. We can either make a running talley of how much we have collected and once we cohesively decide that should feed us... we're set.

We are just suggesting that everyone figure out what they had planned on budgeting towards food, and that will be what we use to shop for the cookout and the clean up on Sunday. Plus any drinks or snacks to just have on hand for those who have preference.

Friday night food has never been established, so will likely be simply ordering pizza. Saturday night is eating at Mid City Grill. So both of those nights are more designed as 'take care of yourself'.

As for method of advance collection, those who were planning on this route can PM a request fro my address (which those of you who are driving will end up needing anyway) and we can go from there. Alternatively, you should ask for the igloo residents as they are equally in charge of the events.

But yeah, if anyone wishes to contact me along this line also, I/we will help make sure everything gets taken care of.

Ummm... We could plan out a menu, but maybe need to hear some votes or suggestions from the folks coming. I have heard mixed reviews of the burgers and/or the kabobs at the cook-out. We are working on the effeciency problem encountered last year.... I still support the idea of a deli tray for clean up at your place. Lunchmeats, cheeses, fruits and veggies and an assortment of chips.

As for actually mapping it out, we just need to find a time when real-life and work exhaustion does not interfere.

On a side note... wanna go for a hike on Saturday the 30th?
