Happy International Women's Day!

This is a day on which we celebrate how far women have progressed towards true equality in the political, economic, and social arenas. Just think about how amazingly the status of women has changed in the last hundred years. On this day we also remember how much further we have to progress to ensure true gender equality for all of the world's citizens.

My husband and I discussed how to celebrate this day, and we decided that it would be good to sponsor the education of a young girl from the poverty-stricken western region of China. In traditional Chinese culture, when there is a lack of money a family will always educate the boys before the girls. We can help to readdress this gender imbalance by sponsoring one girl's education at a time.

For those males who just can't give up their priviledge: 19th November.

Yay for us!
According to a National Geographic video ("Most Typical Person In The World") I recently saw, women are officially a minority now - males have overtaken.

Relevant antecdote --

Scene: a gay bar in this city (now closed, alas); queue a young queer (no, not me) to balk at the number of females in the place with a rather uncouth reference to seafood. Zoom in on his shame as he is upbraided by his fellows that the gay rights' movement as but a tutelary branch of women's lib that owes its success thither, and to show a little honking gratitude.

And I agree. A fine century of work indeed.

International Women's Day and Mardi Gras on the same day?!?!

I'm sorry, and I mean no disrespect, but that makes me giggle uncontrolably.

Today's Fat Tuesday? Damn, I'm out of touch.

Yeah, Easter is late this year, so Late Mardi Gras too. I'm surprised, most people don't seem to know it's today. Went to a bar for lunch, and I asked them if they were having any Mardi Gras Specials and they just looked at me funny.

So for my own amusement I order a Hurricane Burger :smalleek:

I had no idea it was international women's day. I was thinking about pancakes.
Still, here's a video of James Bond in drag. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkp4t5NYzVM&feature=player_embedded) It's relevant.

I'm dissappointed that I basically missed both these days.

Fortuately, I have another five and a half hours to celebrate them in. Yay for living in a late time zone!
