I was thinking, we could have a "let's watch" instead of "let's play", where we pick a movie on netflix to watch, then discuss it afterwards. Any interest?

Dunno, need some more details (how we talk about it, what we talk about, how we decide movies, etc.).

Gaelbert

I'd be up for this. Maybe.
I think the normal convention for selecting a movie is to do a round of nominations, then a round of voting. Then the club members would be given a certain amount of time to watch the movie selected. After this time is up, the members post their comments in here and discuss it. Then comes the nomination round again, rinse, and repeat.

I'm willing to give it a go. :) Can't promise I'll be able to always participate, but I can try.

Arsenic and Old Lace (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arsenic_and_Old_Lace_%28film%29) good old fashion screwball comedy from 1944 starring all kinds of madness. My nomination.

I vote for Mystery Team (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystery_Team), because Donald Glover was in that, and he's in Community and hear that's popular in these parts.

If you watch it on XBox Live we could do live chat and watch it together. I have like a dozen things I can watch Netflix on so, sure I'm down for this.

I'd like to nominate The Secret of Kells (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/The_Secret_of_Kells/70120522?trkid=496624#height1351). It's the only movie in my queue that's board appropriate, but it's also a damn good movie. Or so I've heard.

I have already seen Mystery Team, but I was rather pleased when I did see it. So, I'd be up for that again.

Secret of Kells is an excellent movie. Will second that.

I may or may not participate any given time, pretty busy with college, but if I can, I will. Here's some board-safe movies on my list:

Ink
Nausicaa
Steamboy
Into the Woods
Titan AE
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Addam’s Family and Addam’s Family Values
The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the Eighth Dimension
Robin Hood: Men in Tights
Young Frankenstein
Airplane
Muppet Treasure Island

Wow, I only had to take off like three or four things. This is longer than I expected. I should maybe pare it down, hm? Perhaps we should develop a system for number of nominations?

Benson

Perhaps limiting it to ones that can be instantly viewed on Netflix since some one those in the list would require dvd by mail. ^^

Ahyes! Right. Instant view netflix. That's like...the point. That cuts it down to 2-3, if I recall. Let me do so.

Alright then. I nominate Ink (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Ink/70125584?trkid=2361637), and Robin Hood: Men in Tights (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Robin_Hood_Men_in_Tights/70046290?trkid=2361637).

Shall we vote by Friday? That way we can know what we're watching this weekend.

Okay, here are the ones that have been nominated so far. Do we want to keep nominating, or move onto the voting?
Arsenic and Old Lace (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arsenic_and_Old_Lace_%28film%29)
Mystery Team (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystery_Team)
The Secret of Kells (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/The_Secret_of_Kells/70120522?trkid=496624#height1351)
Ink (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Ink/70125584?trkid=2361637)
Robin Hood: Men in Tights (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Robin_Hood_Men_in_Tights/70046290?trkid=2361637)
Seven Samurai (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Seven_Samurai/950727?trkid=2361637#height1543)

Boyz N the Hood? Board appropriate?

I want in, but I feel as though keeping the movies "board appropriate" limits things a lot. There are movies that are socially acceptable under normal context rather than board rules, but whatever.

Some good discussion movies:
Requiem for a Dream
Shutter Island
Inception
Metropolis
Red Dawn
Full Metal Jacket
Doctor Strangelove
The Shining
Kill Bill

Otogi

I'm also voting for Mystery Team, although I wouldn't mind the Secrets of Kell.

It sounds like a pretty good idea, although I sorta dislike the nomination/voting aspect. You just end up with popular movies that most of us have seen already. I think a better way would be to have OP think of a number between 1-1000 and let everyone take a guess at it and the one closest picks what we watch. That way we get some stranger and lesser known movies thrown into the mix.

That works for me. This way everyone gets a movie they think is awesome and wants to share it with everyone else. And if you've already picked you can't pick again until everyone else has.

I think that's the way they do it in most book/movie clubs.

Sounds good.

Gaelbert

Okay, I'm going to step forward and start the number guessing thing because it seems like a consensus. If this keeps going, the person who won last can pick the next number, and so on? Sound good? If so, then I have a number picked. I'd write it down here in a spoiler, but if you quoted it you would accidentally see it. So you'll just have to trust me for now.

Lets go with Moon for some nice hard sci-fi and I've been meaning to watch it..
www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/

So how long to we have to watch it?

Gaelbert
2011-04-23, 06:08 PM
I was thinking a week would be fair. So next Sunday we would start the guessing process again, then have the movie selected by Thursday, and start over. That could be a little too long though, I don't know if it would take a week to watch a movie.

Sillycomic
2011-04-23, 07:42 PM
It might take longer.

Moon isn't a Netflix Instant Watch movie, so people will need to order it to watch it.

I was under the impression we were limiting the movies we were going to watch to the ones available on the Watch Instantly list. If we are I think we have to veto this choice on principle, no matter how great a movie Moon is.

Weezer

I could've sworn Moon was on watch instantly. Apparently as Hadessniper said it was taken off relatively recently, must've seen it before then.
Let's go with Ink instead, I know that ones still up.

Sorry bout the mix up.

It's late so I won't go in depth on the movie or analysis so I will just give some overall thoughts.

Wow.

Wow.

Seriously wow.

It's been a long time since I saw a movie that just blew me away like this. They got almost everything right in my book.

And I cried like a little girl at the ending.... so there's that.

Icewalker
2011-04-25, 04:25 AM
Wooooo, Ink! Great movie. I saw it pretty recently, intending to watch again with the lady soon. I love the ideas of the movie so much. I'm actually intending to write an Unknown Armies one shot in the setting.

Spoilerwise:
I saw the twist coming from very far off. It's meant to be hinted at, definitely: I don't think the fact that I figured it out is any kind of negative point to the movie, nor did it harm the movie at all for me, I think it made it more interesting, but I figured out who Ink was probably around the time he was dealing with the first wanderer, or just after.

Also, a suggestion for the future. Rather than people spouting numbers, and guesses, and etc, just make a big single list of the movies proposed which are on instant watch on netflix. Then select one from the list at random. Much simpler.

Weezer
2011-04-28, 06:34 PM
Just finished watching it, really, really enjoyed it. Simultaneously dark yet not depressing, which can be a fine line to walk.
As Icewalker said, the twist was pretty easy to figure out, but i don't think that detracts from the movie at all. It just adds another layer of expectation as the viewer waits to see when Ink will figure out who he is.
I also liked the fight choreography, fights were fast, brutal and not at all over the top. They captured a very visceral feel that stands out from many fight scenes where the tension is removed by how over the top it is.
