This class was inspired by this thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=193875); my thanks to slaydemons for getting me to think about it.

It's an awkward idea in 3.5: a pure caster who nonetheless relies on lower-level spells. My solution was to not completely strip her of higher level spells, but only leave her bonus spells due to high ability score, and then give her a ton of lower-level spell slots and the ability to cast multiple lower-level spells at once.

I think that currently I went overboard on giving out the lower-level spell slots; let me know what you think. The numbers are quite high, but they're also low level. I don't know. PEACH, please!

Prerequisites
Ability to cast 3rd level spells
Spellcraft 9 ranks
Magical Manipulation feat*
* New feat described here:
Magical Manipulation
Prerequisites
Ability to cast spells
Benefit
Whenever you prepare or cast a spell with a spell slot of a level higher than the spell ordinarily requires (including any metamagic costs applied to it), you gain a spell slot of a level equal to the difference between the spell's effective level, and the level of the spell slot used to cast or prepare it.

Thus, if you cast or prepared Empowered Magic Missile (effectively a 3rd-level spell) with a 5th-level spell slot, you gain a 2nd-level spell slot (either to be used to cast another spell or to prepare another spell).

If you cast or prepare a 0th-level spell from a higher level spell slot, you gain a spell slot one level lower, plus an additional 0th-level spell slot. Thus, casting or preparing Prestidigitation with a 2nd-level slot would give you a 1st-level slot as well as a 0th-level slot.

Note that the Heighten Spell metamagic feat changes a spell's effective level, which will change which levels of spell slots you will receive. A Heightened Charm Person cast as a 4th-level spell due to Heighten, but cast from a 5th level spell slot, would give you a 1st-level spell slot (and not a 4th). This is true of all metamagic, but clarification for Heighten Spell seems worth mentioning.

Normal
You may cast or prepare spells with higher level spell slots, but you do not get to keep the remaining spell levels.

Special
This feat replaces the Arcane Manipulation feat if it is in play, and counts as that feat for all prerequisites. A character that would normally receive Arcane Manipulation as a bonus feat would instead gain this feat.

Armor and Weapon Proficiency
Multicasters gain no new proficiencies in any armor or weaponry.

Spellcasting
A Multicaster's class level stacks with that of all other spellcasting classes that she has for the purpose of caster level, spells per day, and spells known. In other words, each level progresses every spellcasting class that she has by one level, but she does not gain any benefit of that class level aside from caster level, spells per day, and spells known.

Bonus Spells
In addition to her regular spells per day as determined by her levels in spellcasting classes, a Multicaster also gains bonus spells per day based on her class level. Add the specified number of spell slots in the table below to her spells per day for each class in which she is capable of casting spells of that level. At 6th level, a Multicaster may cast or prepare an infinite number of 0th-level spells per day, meaning she may basically cast all such spells that she knows at-will.

Bonus Spells Per Day
{table=head]Level | 0th | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th

1st | +3 | +2 | +1 | +1 | —

2nd | +6 | +4 | +2 | +2 | —

3rd | +9 | +6 | +3 | +3 | —

4th | +12 | +8 | +4 | +4 | —

5th | +15 | +10 | +5 | +5 | +2

6th | ∞ | +12 | +6 | +6 | +4
Divided Spells
Upon taking the 1st level of Multicaster, the base spells per day she gains from her level in spellcasting classes change. All 4th and higher level base spell slots are lost, and instead, she gains bonus spell slots for each such spell slot lost according to the table below.

Divided Spell Slots
{table=head]Gained | 0th | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th | 6th

Lost | | | | | | |

4th | +1 | +1 | +1 | +1 | |

5th | +1 | | +1 | +2 | |

6th | +1 | +1 | | +1 | +1 | |

7th | +1 | | +1 | +1 | | +1 |

8th | +1 | +1 | | | +1 | +1 |

9th | +1 | | +1 | | +1 | | +1
Any bonus spell slots (including those from a high ability score, from this feature, or from her Bonus Spells class feature, above) are retained, however. Thus, her base spells per day of a given level is considered to be 0*, that is, castable so long as she has bonus slots of that level, if she could have otherwise had spell slots of that spell level. Provided she has at least one bonus slot of a given level, she also gains any spells known she would otherwise be entitled to for that level, and she qualifies as being able to cast spells of that level.

Special spell slots, such as those for Domain Spells or the bonus slots gained for being a Specialist Wizard, are also divided, but retain their usual restrictions, and therefore should be tracked separately.

In this way, the Multicaster has a very large number of lower-level spell slots, but only a very few slots for the highest spell levels, rarely gaining more than 1 spell per day of levels 7th through 9th.

For convenience, the effects of this feature on various spellcasting classes' spells per day tables are included here:

† Ordinarily, the sublime chord does not gain any spell slots or spells known of this level. However, with access to the Bard and Sorcerer/Wizard spell lists, a sublime chord/multicaster could arguably take a lower-level spell from these lists in place of one of her higher-level spells known, and use that with these slots. Overall, however, combining sublime chord and multicaster seems exceedingly unwise.

Multicast
Beginning at 1st level, a Multicaster may cast up to 1½ levels worth of spells (0th-level spells count as ½ level for this purpose) that all have the same casting time, in a single action equal to that casting time. Thus, she could cast Ray of Frost (a 0th-level spell, counting as ½) and Magic Missile (a 1st-level spell, bringing her total to 1½), which both have casting times of a Standard Action, in a single Standard Action.

For the purpose of this feature, metamagic that increases a spell's level causes it to take more of the available "space" in a multicast, but a spell can never count as a lower level than its usual level for determining how much multicast "space" it takes up.

At 2nd level, this "space" increases to 2½ spell levels, then 3½ at 3rd, 4½ at 4th, 5½ at 5th, and 6½ at 6th, each as indicated in the Multicast column in the table above.

Penetrating Spells
At 2nd level, all of a Multicaster's spells are considered one level higher for the purpose of overcoming the effects of a Globe of Invulnerability or similar. This does not actually change the level of the spell in question, either for the purposes of the spell slot used, the ability to Multicast it or how much "space" it takes while Multicasting it, or for the sake of its DCs, it only allows it to over come effects that block or inhibit lower-level spells as if it were a level higher. The Multicaster may waive these benefits if she wishes, if, for example, there is an effect that hedges out higher-level spells rather than lower-level spells.

At 4th level, this bonus increases to +2 effective spell levels. At 6th, it becomes +3 effective spell levels.

As written, this advances and grants its full allocation of bonus slots to every spellcasting class you have at once. Is this deliberate? I don't think it's broken, but it's an interesting idea if so - it strongly rewards piling in as many dips as you can. Wiz5/Sor1/Mult6 is as valid an entry as Wiz6/Mult6 and is probably a lot more effective. Personally I like it that way, though.

It was intended, yes, but I'm not certain that it's a good idea. I should probably include some levels where you do not gain the sort of pseudo-spellcasting levels at all.

Well, like I said, I think it's pretty neat. At the levels where it starts being significant, straight casters are starting to do scary things with their high-level slots, so piles of low-level slots from half a dozen classes, while interesting, is hardly gamebreaking.

(I entirely want to play a character who uses Practical Metamagic, Easy Metamagic, and Heighten Spell to get into this class with one level each of six different spellcasting classes. That seems like an awesome idea to me.)

Not really. The multicast ability is similar, but the "give up high level spells in exchange for tons of low-level slots and progression of multiple caster classes at once" is unique to the multicaster. Also they use entirely different casting mechanics.

I'm interested by this. Since Lich doesn't care about what spell slots you have, just your caster level, this still quallifies. However, now the caster no longer gets levels in archmage (No matter, he wouldn't want Archmage if he can spew out this many magic missiles at a time).
This also seems like a mystic theurge on steroids, for when you take more than one spell casting class beforehand. What if I took wizard 5/druid 1/sorcerer 1/cleric 1/bard 1/spontaneous druid 1/spontaneous cleric 1/multicaster 6, for ECL 17?

I'd make it progress up to two classes at a time, at most. Otherwise, I'd say it's pretty **** balanced.

See, I'd normally think so? But the thing is, high-level spells are so powerful that tons of low-level spells don't really make as big a deal as the high-level spells would be.

I mean, that ECL 17 character you posted could otherwise just be casting Time Stop, Wish, Gate, and Shapechange. Swarms of Magic Missiles are great, but the build you posted is less game-breaking than a straight wizard build can be entirely by accident.

Note that you still gain 0* of higher level spells; you gain none from your class levels, but if you have high enough ability scores (i.e. at least 28 for 9ths), you can still cast them. You're pretty unlikely to get more than one per day of 7th, 8th, and 9th level spells, though.

However, that does mean you can qualify for, say, Archmage. Though you wouldn't have spell slots to give up for a lot of the High Arcana.

As for progressing multiple classes, the more classes that you have, the more spellcasting levels that you're giving up. Plus, there's only 6 class levels, and you need 3rd level spells in something. A Wizard 5/Sorcerer 1/Bard 1/Cleric 1/Druid 1/Multicaster 6 casts as an 11th level Wizard, 7th level Sorcerer/Bard/Cleric/Druid at ECL 15, and has no spell slots higher than 4th (though he can cast probably one 5th and 6th level spell per day due to high Int). I'm not convinced that this is more powerful than Wizard 9/Multicaster 6, or Wizard 15.

It's miles less powerful than Wizard 15. He's probably on par with the Wiz9/Mult6 if he's built to his strengths, although if the straight Wiz/Mult stocks up on Pearls of Power he can blow away the multi-Multicaster.

It is actually possible to qualify for Multicaster without access "real" to third-level spells, although it involves what's technically known in the industry as shenanigans. As written, it's possible to qualify using Heighten Spell and metamagic-reducing feats and enter a character into Multicaster with one level each of six different classes. On the other hand, if you do this you now have a seventh-level caster who only knows first-level spells, so, uh, have fun with that? Even once such a character gets more levels in Multicaster, it comes back to the earlier discussion about the many-class Multicaster vs. the single-class - you get more versatility, but you're losing out on power.

That said, there is an exploit of sorts. I'm now considering a sorc 1/wiz 1/bard 1/spellthief 1/death master 1/(assassin or trapsmith) 1/multicaster 4 for a kind of goofy game in the works, using Master Spellthief to stack together the caster level of all the classes for CL 30 with no spells over third level. Even then, though, most level 1 to 3 spells just aren't all that breakable even with a very high caster level thanks to CL caps. He'll be a heck of a blaster, though, so that's nice. If I had the feats for it, I'd try to cram in ur-priest instead of death master, but this particular shenanigan is extremely feat-intensive. Even pushing this to the edge, though, I'm not sure it's especially overpowerful - just very versatile and fun.

alright. How about this then:
Wizard 1 (with prcosious aprentice, for 2nd level spells)/archivist 3/mystic theurge 4/multicaster 6?
That's ECL 14, casts as both an 11th level wizard, and an 13th level archivist, so it would get bonus spells up to 6th and 7th, and since both classes get 3rd level spells @ 5th, and are 5th and 7th when entering multicaster, so it qualifies with no question.

Throw in a level of ur-priest right before entering multicaster, and then two more levels of mystic theurge afterwards to get 7th level bonus spells from all three (8th from archivist) at ECL 17, and qualify for archmage for any one of them. Actually, just for wizard, because it has to be arcane, but you get my drift, right?
(If I could figure out a way to only need 1 level of archivist for mystic theurge, I could qualify for archmage at 15th rather than 17th, and take all 5 levels)

Alright, so you're right that increasing the number of classes you take beforehand weakens the character substantially, but I still think this is a bit too strong, just because it advances all casting classes.

Here's a more SAD one: Divine Bard 1/spontaneous druid 1/spontaneous cleric 5/multicaster 6
All of them are wis based. Throw in a monk dip or take another ACF or two for wis to AC, and all you have to ever do is pump wis to the sky.

Alright, it may not be OP, and maybe just OV (over-versatile), but I don't think advancing all casting classes is always good.

With considerably fewer spells per day of 4-5-6 than a straight archivist would have at that level. Level 4-5-6 spells are very good.

Ur-priest disqualifies you from divine casting from any other class, archivist included.

(If I could figure out a way to only need 1 level of archivist for mystic theurge, I could qualify for archmage at 15th rather than 17th, and take all 5 levels)

Heighten Spell + Practical Metamagic or Easy Metamagic is the classic shenanigan for this purpose.

Alright, so you're right that increasing the number of classes you take beforehand weakens the character substantially, but I still think this is a bit too strong, just because it advances all casting classes.

"Taking many classes weakens the character substantially."
"It can advance many classes at once, so it's too strong."
I'm sorry, I don't follow the logic that allows for both.

All of them are wis based. Throw in a monk dip or take another ACF or two for wis to AC, and all you have to ever do is pump wis to the sky.

And again, you're less powerful than you would have been going straight cleric. You have a bunch of low-level slots but you've given up most of your 4-5-6-7 slots.

Alright, it may not be OP, and maybe just OV (over-versatile), but I don't think advancing all casting classes is always good.

If it's not overpowered, then what is the problem?

Veyr
2011-04-10, 03:46 PM
I would wager that advancing all classes is almost never good. But I suspect somewhat that this may be such a case.

Anyway, this seems like a reasonable amount of discussion on the matter that I'm willing to think it's not blatantly overpowered, at least, and it better fits the requested idea in the thread I linked.

So, now the issue of lower-level spells slots. You get a ton of them. I mean, when I look at the conversion chart, I'm not too impressed — I wouldn't generally trade a 9th level spell slot for a 0th, 2nd, 4th, and 6th level slot, even if that is much better than you could usually do with Arcane Manipulation (which is usually a bad feat anyway).

But then when I made that table for the Wizard, it's huge. A Wizard 14/Multicaster 6 has twenty-eight 1st level spells, twenty-six 2nd level, twenty-seven 3rd level, and sixteen 4th level, all before counting bonus slots or specialization. Plus infinite cantrips (whatever). That seems like a preposterous number (major pain to actually prepare all of those), but maybe it's necessary (I mean, you could theoretically be casting six 1st level spells in a Standard Action).

So yeah, thoughts on those would be nice.

Also, missed this earlier:

I dont really understand how this really work for the spells you gain you have two table and I dont really understand what's the second one is for, seem to be for other spellcasting class that give you spells above level 5, but still fail to see how to read it
OK, it does two things: first, it changes how your existing spellcasting class works, so that you never gain spell slots for higher-level spells (only gaining the ability to use them if you have a high enough ability score to gain bonus spells of that level, hence the 0*s). Second, it gives additional bonus spell slots per day for 0th through 4th level spells. These are added to however many spell slots of those levels you would have anyway. Obviously, if you don't have any 0th-level spells on your spell list (Paladin and Ranger, mostly), you don't get those... Hmm, I feel like I should give some free 0th-level spells known just for those classes.

Does this make sense?

Bump since I completed all Core casters' tables. Beguiler, Dread Necromancer, and Warmage are almost identical to Sorcerer (one fewer 9th level spell per day at 20th is the only difference; well, that, and that DN's don't have Cantrips for some reason), but I'll throw them up there at some point anyway. Also will do Apostle of Peace, Duskblade, Favored Soul, Healer, Hexblade, Shugenja, Spirit Shaman, Suel Arcanamach, Ur-Priest, and Wu-Jen; I know there are more classes that have their own spellcasting progressions, so please let me know what others I am missing.

I'd like to see what the Spellthief progression would look like :

Spellthief (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20050107a)

And how would you calculate CL for, say, a Spellthief 5/Sorc 5/Multicaster 6 with the Master Spellthief (http://dnd.savannahsoft.eu/feat-1891-master-spellthief.html) feat

See this guide (http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19867410/Master_Spellthief_(a_mini-guide)) to see what i'm talking about

PS : am i tired or is the 10th level sorcerer able to cast more 3rd level spells than 2nd level spells, and more 2nd than 1st ?

Veyr
2011-04-14, 09:06 AM
I can't do the Spellthief's whole table right this second, but the CL (assuming I'm remembering Master Spellthief correctly) would be 22 for both Spellthief and Sorcerer (5 Spellthief + 6 Multicaster for CL 11 Spellthief, then 5 Sorcerer + 6 Multicaster for CL 11 Sorcerer, then you add them together to get CL 22 for both).

And yes, in some cases you may end up with more higher-level spell slots than lower level ones. This is why you get bonus slots from the class, too. I think 3rd's still pull ahead of 2nd's, though. You get a lot of those. This is something I've been considering tweaking but not sure how best to do so; suggestions are welcome.

I notice in the spell/level exchange table that a 5th level spell becomes 2x3rd lvl slots + 1x2nd lvl slot + 1x0th lvl slot, ain't that where the math go off ?

Also, knowing that warlock invocations can progress with arcane spellcasting PRCs, how would this interact with warlocks invocations ?

As written this would advance warlock without any penalty to the warlock progression. The down side is that full warlock progression is not really anything to write home about. If you throw in homebrew invocation classes and found a way to qualify with those alone, you could get something serious going, but as it stands invocation classes only qualify for "caster level X" or the ability to cast a specific spell, not "ability to cast level X spells".

5th level wizard/1st level warlock/6th level multicaster = 6 4d6 eldritch blasts at will. Doesn't work, though, as multicasting doesn't work for spell-like abilities as written so it would just increase warlock casting which is rather meh.

Yeah, if you could multicast SLAs there might be an issue (it might make warlock blasting good! My heavens!) but as it stands all you're likely to get is some all-day low level utility powers. And, well, if there's one thing the multicaster doesn't have a shortage of, it's low-level slots to cast utility powers with.

That said, if you were planning to extend Multicaster's multiple progression with Legacy Champion, it could be a credible sixth entry on the "six-pack" build I posted earlier - you'd get enough warlock for two greater invocations, which duplicate higher-level spells than your "real" casting classes get. The Dead Walk would also be worth picking up if you're not taking any divine dips (and can benefit from Master Spellthief, unlike them) and Stony Grasp has a CL-keyed uncapped Strength bonus, which is potentially worthwhile with Master Spellthief shenanigans.

I had the exact same thought. A Wizard 4/Force Missile Mage 5/Multicaster 6/War Weaver 5 (I don't remember the exact pre-reqs for FMM or WWeaver; this may require early entry shenanigans) would be... quite potent. It's probably the optimal build, actually.

I notice in the spell/level exchange table that a 5th level spell becomes 2x3rd lvl slots + 1x2nd lvl slot + 1x0th lvl slot, ain't that where the math go off ?
Yes, but that's intentional: I want 5ths to be better than 4ths without giving a 4th level slot, which means I don't really have many other alternatives.

Yeah, see... I think multicasting Eldritch Blast is fine (after all, it's pretty much what you do with Eldritch Glaive), but I worry about unintended side-effects if I open it up to all SLAs. Though Eldritch Blast is probably the worst of them, simply because it scales better than your average 1st level spell ever would.

As written (and you better believe this was intentional!), Legacy Champion does nothing for this class. Multicast is specifically written as "you get 1.5 at 1st, 2.5 at second, up to 6.5 at 6th - read the table" because that way it does not have any "per level" wording that Legacy Champion can advance. Legacy Champion might let you continue getting +1 level of all existing spellcasting classes (which would be pretty broken, IMO), but I don't think it does because I'm pretty sure it can't do that (the same way I'm pretty sure it couldn't "advance" Mystic Theurge to advance two spellcaster's spellcasting).

Benly
2011-04-14, 04:26 PM
As written, Legacy Champion advances Mystic Theurge and the multi-progression of Multicaster just fine. Personally I don't think that's a problem; Mystic Theurge really should be a 14-level class anyway and Multicaster cleans up its own mess nicely by cutting off the high-level spells - I can't think of any way to abuse it where it's more broken than or even as broken as a straight single-class T1 or T2 caster of the same level.

You're right that LC doesn't advance Multicast, but I was thinking solely of the multi-progression.

Regarding SLAs, if you're fine with warlock abilities but not sure about making it open season, you could restrict it to SLAs gained from classes with an arcane caster level and therefore prevent most wackiness.

Does it now? Well, I'm not going to be responsible for that stupidity — I agree that the Mystic Theurge should be longer (longer than 14 levels, even, since 3/3 entry is abysmal — something Ultimate Magus-like but longer would be ideal), but I think there's probably some way of breaking the Multicaster's progression if it was more than 6 levels. But maybe not; like I said, I wash my hands of it.

It dawns on me that Wizard 5/Cleric 1/Multicaster 6/Mystic Theurge 8 makes the Multicaster serve as a rather nice fill-in for those missing Mystic Theurge levels, plus you avoid having to burn more Cleric levels early. I like this.

re: your edit: That gets a bit too fiddly, there, IMO. Plus I'm not sure how Divided Spells interacts with the Warlock... that is the major balancing feature, after all. Warlocks are weak enough that the thought of giving Multicast to them even if Divided Spells does nothing to them doesn't strike me as too horrifying, but a homebrew invoker might be quite problematic, perhaps...

Anyway, I've cleaned up the post a lot, breaking out the bonus spells and the lower-leveled thing into separate class features gained on 1st, rather than having that huge spellcasting section. Hope it makes things clearer.

I've also added the Spellthief's new spells per day table.

Yeah, I can't really think of an elegant way to apply Divided Spells to the warlock. Left as-is, it's at least a tolerable dip that gets you a lesser invocation (probably The Dead Walk or Flee The Scene, as those are both useful tricks that emulate a spell above the level 3 cutoff) and probably the long-duration skill or save buff invocations. With Master Spellthief trickery a couple of others become useful.

Edit: An amusing thing I realized the other night: Assuming normal entry (6 levels of whatever, then 6 levels of Multicaster), a Multicaster will, at ECL 12, do more at-will damage by machine-gunning Acid Splashes than a warlock's Eldritch Blast.

OK, I updated the tables to include everything from every Complete, plus a couple of other books. Complete Divine has a stupid number of PrCs with their own spellcasting; I've just assumed that all of them use Wisdom for bonus spells because there's a ton of them and they're mostly all terrible so I couldn't bothered to check for each one. I did get the Favored Soul's weirdness correct, however. Please let me know if you see any that are wrong, and I will fix them.

Also, let me know if I'm missing anything. The Cyre Scout from Dragonmarked has its own Infusions that qualify, so I'll probably have to add that. I don't know of any others from Eberron; I know almost nothing about the Forgotten Realms, though, so I have no idea if there are any PrCs with their own spellcasting there. Input would be appreciated.

I also changed how specialized spell slots (like Domain Slots and Wizard Specialist Slots) are handled; the tables have been updated to reflect this.

Dungeonscape has the Trapsmith, which is uniquely well-suited to take advantage of the multicaster - it's a five-level class with only level 1-3 spells, and many of its spells are at reduced level (Haste is level 1, Fabricate and Greater Dispel Magic are level 3). Nothing too gamebreaking, though, unless you allow Fabricate economy shenanigans.

At the other extreme, Unapproachable East has the Nar Demonbinder, which has the peculiar distinction of being even worse than the Sublime Chord for a Multicaster - like the Sublime Chord its spellcasting starts at level 4, but the Nar Demonbinder uses its own unique spell list which has no lower-level spells on it.

Unapproachable East also has several other PrCs with their own casting. The Nentyar Hunter is a five-level PrC with a rangerish unique spell list (also five levels long). The Runescarred Berserker, a rather bizarre class which has spells known (from a unique list) but no actual spells per day. Have fun working out the interaction on that one. The Telflammar Shadowlord, like the Trapsmith, is a short class (6 levels) with a 1-3 spell list that has some underlevel spells on it, and the Thayan Slaver has a unique 1-4 list.

I don't need to do special tables for the 1-3 classes (I actually looked at the Trapsmith) because they don't get 4th level spells and are therefore unaffected by Divided Spells.

As for the others, blargh, I'll look into those when I get the chance. I don't have those books but I'm pretty sure a friend does (he's an FR junkie; why, I have never been able to understand), so I'll have to borrow them.

Thanks for the help!

I've added a table for the Elven Generalist ACF from Races of the Wild.

I've also added a new class feature, to prevent Multicasters from being completely shut down by Globe of Invulnerability. Please let me know what you think of those.

Well, I've thrown together an experiment in combining this class with Force Missile Mage.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you...

Gattlin Gunn (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=301428)
N Human Wizard 6/Force Missile Mage 5/Multicaster 6/Argent Savant 1/Wizard +2, Level 20, Init -1, HP / , Speed 30
AC 9, Touch 9, Flat-footed 9, Fort +10, Ref +5, Will +11, Base Attack Bonus 10/5
(-1 Dex)
Abilities Str 8, Dex 8, Con 18, Int 28, Wis 8, Cha 0
Condition None

It focuses, of course, on mass numbers of magic missiles. In a single turn, it can multicast two Quickened Empowered, Maximized, Stilled, Silent, Invisible Magic Missiles(+2 Spell Level total), followed by Multicasting 6 more Empowered, Maximized, Stilled, Silent, Invisible Magic Missiles(+0 Spell Level total). So a total of 8 casting of magic missile per turn for the first 12 or so turns of a battle. Each casting fires 7 missiles thanks to Force Missile Mage, and each missile does 8 damage(1d4 maximized = 4 x1.5(empower) = 6 +1 +1(Argent Savant's Force Specialization)). Meaning 8 * 7 * 8 = 448 damage per turn, assuming all of the missiles strike the target. If the target is weak to fire, cold, electricity or acid, you can apply that descriptor to the spell to deal the additional dammage. So yes, you can use magic missiles to kill a Great Wyrm Red Dragon in a single turn.

Each magic missile spell is treated as caster level 22 for overcoming spell resistance, and for bypassing shield effects(Shield, Nightshield, Brooch of Shielding, etc).

It packs a half-dozen Greater Dispel Magics to deal with Globes of Invulnerability(the only thing that can reliably stop the absurd numbers of Magic Missiles it throws per turn). Some of those are quickened, so you can throw a dispel at the Globe of Invulnerability, followed by a barrage of magic missiles.

In the event that you manage to run out of magic missiles, you can fire 13 Empowered, Maximized, Invisible, Silent 0-level spells per turn.

If the character is played into epic, I'd drop the Argent Savant level and the last two Wizard levels, and instead progress through Incantatrix for more metamagic twinkage. You'll be grabbing Improved Metamagic as well, which gives you far more options.

If you're not as interested in damage, simply swap out Empower for Fell Drain. Depending on how the DM rules it, you can either drain 8 levels from each of 7 different targets, or drain as many as 56 levels from a single target(depending on whether or not the drain effect applies multiple times when multiple missiles hit a single target). I just built this to dish out obscene amounts of damage with Magic Missile.

I'm sure that many of the more skilled optimizers here could do far better with this than I have, but this is my basic idea - and very skeletal at that, not even having any equipment allocated(aside from a +5 Intelligence Tome to increase spells/day).

That does seem to be about the optimal path for this class, because of Force Missile Mage mostly. It's extremely good, but not exactly out of line for a Wizard. I'm sort of vaguely comfortable with this. I wish that weren't the degree of silliness one can expect from a Wizard, but it really is.

Anyway, thanks very much for your interest in my class!

I really like this. I'd love to try it out on a Gestalt gish build. I'm thinking Mystic Ranger X//Wizard 5/Abjurant Champion 1/Multicaster X... Speaking of which, would you mind making a progression for the Mystic Ranger? :smalltongue: I'm not certain that I understand your table, but I've put the standard advancement in the table below.

So, here's my thought to counterpoint Gattlin Gunn.

Paulie Math, The Multitalented Multicaster
Wizard 1/Spellthief 1/Sorcerer 1/Beguiler 1/Bard 1/Avenger 1/Multicaster 6/Trapsmith 1/Wu Jen 1/Ranger 4 (Shooting Star substitution, Mystic Ranger)/Warmage 1/Sha'ir 1
Crucial feats: Master Spellthief, Sword Of The Arcane Order, feats as needed to qualify for prestige classes

Most of the details here do not matter all that much, and pretty much any class except ranger, wizard and spellthief can be replaced as you see fit with other arcane spellcasting classes.

Paulie has a caster level of 70 for most of his classes. His ranger caster level is 704, while his wizard caster level is either 74 or 774 depending on how Sword Of The Arcane Order is interpreted.

When Paulie casts Hunter's Eye, he gains 234d6 of sneak attack damage. He then machine-guns 13 Acid Splashes per round, each of which can apply sneak attack damage separately for up to 3042d6 damage if all 13 ranged touch attacks connect.

Also, he can cast a lot of different spells.

...I actually wasn't expecting that when I started working up the build. I was just trying to get Hunter's Eye into the build and forgot about that terrifying little thing that Shooting Star Ranger does to CL tricks.

Erm... could you explain the CL tricks used here? Specifically, HOW IN MYSTRA'S NAME YOU GOT A 700+ CL? :smalleek: :smalleek: :smalleek:

What... what in the Nine Hells is this Shooting Star Ranger, and why is it so absurdly broken???

What... what in the Nine Hells is this Shooting Star Ranger, and why is it so absurdly broken???

See, it's not actually broken under normal circumstances. It's a set of substitution levels that gives you some bonus spells, lets you calculate your base ranger CL as 1/2 ranger level +2, and lets you add your CL from arcane classes you have to your ranger CL. Under normal circumstances, this just means your wizard 5/ranger 4 (or whatever) has a ranger CL of 9 for somewhat easier multiclassing. Sword Of The Arcane Order similarly adds your ranger level to your wizard CL, among some other (more popular) benefits. When used as intended, it's not especially broken.

What's going on here is multiple stages of multiplication. Master Spellthief lets you add together your CL from all your arcane classes to determine each class's CL. Normally this just means you don't get penalized for multiclassing, but with Multicaster advancing all of them at once, each single-level dip in an arcane spellcasting class is adding 7 to the total for Master Spellthief, with the result that all 10 arcane spellcasting classes end up with a CL of 70 each. Shooting Star Ranger then adds the CL of his arcane classes to his ranger CL, yielding a ranger CL of 704.

Sword Of The Arcane Order may or may not then add this 704 to his wizard CL, depending on how you read the feat (a strict reading may mean that his wizard CL is instead 74, as it references "ranger class levels").

I had honestly forgotten that Shooting Star did this when I started working up the build - my intent was to get Hunter's Eye with a CL in the high double or low triple digits, not high triple.

That's mostly just Master Spellthief stupidity, actually.

Personally, as a DM, I'd say that gaining an "effective level" twice in the same level is not allowed (analagous to Gestalt where you only get the better of the two). I don't think that case is really the "fault" of the Multicaster, it mostly just serves as another source of mult-progression (great multi-progession, sure, but that's not normally a huge problem).

Well, it's something that'll come up with Multicaster and any source of CL combining. There are other ways to abuse CL-combiners, but none of them are as spectacular as the Multicaster.

That said, I don't even think it's a problem with one layer of CL combination - Master Spellthief's CL 100 is impressive but hard to break games with lacking high-level spells. There are very few low-level spells that are uncapped in any easy-to-abuse way. It's the multiple layers of combination that really go crazy - if Shooting Star Ranger had worked like I thought I remembered (makes the spellcasting arcane rather than adds a CL combination layer) it would've just been CL 80 or so Hunter's Eye, which leads to more damage than Gattlin but not by such a ludicrous amount.

Veyr
2011-06-08, 11:16 AM
Right, but again, this problem always existed (just not as badly). I don't really think it's within the scope of this class to fix it.

And having weird exceptions particularly for my class to head off some general brokenness doesn't sit well with me. That's a stylistic thing for me as a homebrewer. I think the rule should affect all multi-progression classes with combining feats, not mine in particular.

Benly
2011-06-08, 11:37 AM
Fair enough. Personally I like the Master Spellthief stunt - ridiculously high CL with only low-level spells is an interesting mode in my opinion. Again, it's combining multiple layers of CL combination that gets into insane territory.

(PS: it's still not as bad as a wizard 20 would be. I'm pretty sure "a wizard could do worse" is okay to say when talking about an actual wizard PrC.)

I do agree.

For the most part, the CL won't matter because of CL caps. You just happened to know one spell without them.

I do agree.

For the most part, the CL won't matter because of CL caps. You just happened to know one spell without them.

There are several spells without them, actually - it's just that most of them aren't really all that abusable. Venomfire, Force Missiles, and Hunter's Eye are the only ones in this level range that'll output ludicrous damage, but there are some other fun party tricks with high CL. Improvisation is probably the most useful, granting bonuses to attack rolls or skill checks up to 1/2 CL. There are various spells which get uncapped grapple checks or attack bonuses equal to CL, which is nice if you plan to try to pin down a titan but doesn't boost their end result. Other than that, uncapped low-level spells tend to just be various oddball bonuses - nice if you happen to need a +100 to resist bull rushes, but not really amazing otherwise. Mage Armor lasting a month per casting is fun too, I guess. You can get an Animate Dead control pool that makes Dread Necromancers weep bitter tears, if that's important to you.

Probably the biggest abuse would be somehow getting Holy Word, Maw of Chaos, or one of the other uncapped high-level nasties into a staff and using that, but that's easy enough for a DM to prevent.

Veyr
2011-06-08, 01:37 PM
Right, but those higher level ones will, ironically enough, cost you CL to get.
