Ok guys, I’m kinda stuck. I’ve got a mermaid character I need to name. The problem is the only name I can come up with is Ariel. It’s pretty obvious where I stole the name from. So I don’t suppose anyone has any good suggestions for a name. The character is a wizard/bonded summoner that rides around in her water elemental.

Atalante, Elyseon, Ilona, Mayim, Norlim, Oceana, Odessa, and Yavanna.

There ya go.

Try these (http://www.behindthename.com/php/search.php?nmd=md&terms=Water) or these. (http://www.behindthename.com/php/search.php?nmd=md&terms=ocean)

Also bookmark that site. I have, and use it nearly daily.

Eh, off the top of my head:
Eariel (hah; amusing how completely different methods lead to such similar ends - literal translation for "mermaid" in Quenya)
Ethele
Nenheru
Tella
Celia
Alyria

Overall, soft sounds, frontal vowels, feminine ending to the word. You should be set.

Hm, let's see here...have a gander at the list of names for Darfellans in Stormwrack. I dare say one of those might tickle your fancy.

MerMAID?

Lemara.

Named in homage to Superman's mermaid ex-girlfriend, Lori Lemaris.

Other decent names of aquatic folks from comics:
Tula
Chian
Narmea
Majistra
Nuada
Mera

Or, go to a translator (such as This (http://www.burningmanopera.org/atlantis_language.html) or this (http://www.coveworld.net/eberron/aerenal_translator.html)) and type in a sea animal's name.

Dolphin - Tolipino or Pylol
Octopus - Ookatiposa or Olyder or Sajai (used the Japanese word for octopus to get Sajai. I like it)

Blow bubbles into a glass of milk, while recording with a boom mic. When asked your character's name, just Play the recording. Load it onto a cheap flash drive, and glue it over the name on your character sheet.

If it helps, Ariel's sisters in the movie were Attina, Alana, Adella, Aquata, Arista and Andrina.

Saedis. It's a slight bastardization of the Icelandic name Sædís which means fairy of the ocean or maiden of the ocean.

i think i like this one much better than the others I've seen. i's more or less pronounceable in engrish. And its not quite as silly as some other others, as she's supposed to be a serious character.

The next time you gargle with mouth wash, try to write down what it sounds like phonetically. Instant character name.

I suggest: Gurhhhllll!

Gurhl for short.

If you're curious how it's pronounced it's Sai-dees. That is the æ is pronounced like ie in die and ís like ese in these. But since I doubt anyone at your table speaks the language you can probably make up an interesting engrish pronounciation :smalltongue:

I use a glass of water and blow bubbles while I talk. I know that's not what the thread is about but it is fun.
