Our theme this month is...
Dragons!
This Month's Iron Avatarist is about Dragons, plain and simple. The Mythical creatures of Lore!

Remember: All artwork must be your own. Do not take, alter, or use any of the The Giant's art. Thanks.

Categories
There will be a First through Third place award for each of the following:

Best Dragon Avatar (any creation of 120x120 or smaller)
Best Dragon (Any depiction of a dragon or primarily of a Dragon.)
Best Draconic (Any dragon-related non-dragon creation, such as a half-dragon, dragon slayer, dragon researcher, etc.)
Best Dragon Scene (Any scene depicting dragon-related events OR remade dragon-related scenes from literature/movies/general media.)
Best Rookie Entry (only applicable to those who have never entered these competitions before)

And, of course, the Best Overall award.

And as an extra, I'll be giving out the Ruki's Choice Award for whatever entry I personally like the most from any category.

Rules

1. All entries must be posted by July 1st at Noon, EST.

2. Every entry must include a bolded introduction as to what category you are trying to enter in. Additionally, if it's your first time entering the contest, remember to add "Best Rookie Entry".

3. Every entry must include an itallic introduction as to what your entry is.

For example:
Best Draconic
Haruki slays a dragon

4. You cannot re-submit an entry previously submitted to an IA competition.

5. Do not use spoilers. It makes the judge's job that much harder, and they may do you harm.

6. Only the avatarist who created the avatar may submit it.

7. Please do not quote images. The entry/name will suffice.

8. Keep entries within PG-13 or better. Adhere to forum rules.

Good luck!

I would be able to switch to competitor if I do come up with an idea right?

No, there is no limit.

I should point out, however, that it's not recomended to do so because judges do votes by entry, not by artist, so at some point, artists are pretty much just taking points away from themselves.

BUT, it IS possible for someone to win first, second, and third for any given category, so Serpentine is free to enter as many as she wants.

I've seen enough for me to know that is not worth doing anything further, as always, when logged in, you win ...

Entering pre-made stuff seems to me to be against the spirit of "Iron Avatarist".

There is not and never has been a rule against it. It would really suck if I had an idea for an avatar and after making it an IA appeared where I could use it, but wasn't allowed to enter it because it wasn't made for the contest.

I understand some of the contestants may be a bit overwhelmed by so many entries, but I have just one thing to say to everyone.

Under no circumstance should other contestants submitting amazing artwork be a reason for you to not enter the contest.

This is for fun, guys, enjoy it.

And I would be very, very annoyed if I wasn't allowed to enter in my purple dragon head - one of my favourite avatars - into a perfect topic for it, just because I happened to think of it a while ago :smallannoyed:

As mentioned - and as I alluded to - posting a whole lot is likely to just shoot yourself in the foot as you end up competing against yourself, but, as I said, it's about the art.Well, my first ever... uh... "oots-inspired" piece was for a Pirate contest run by Wukie. Go see when that was, and you'll have your answer :smallwink:

So you're the one everyone's afraid of? Well I got new for you: I'm not. That's right, you might have craft (visual arts) at 15 ranks, but I have this!

I quite like your purple dragon head avvie Serp! I've come to know it pretty well, seeing as it's the avvie of one of my wonderful pbp players.

I've been considering trying my hand at OOTS art, and art in general for that matter. I think I shall, If I can find the time between Tales from the Menagerie (publishing a pulp fiction magazine), writing a comic, writing a dnd adventure, learning more guitar, writing some dnd campaigns, running a large scale online piracy RP, learning contact juggling, writing an Unknown Armies one shot, running a LARP community, writing games for said community......

I can't quite understand the logic behind this. If it hurts your overall appearance because judges don't like a hundered entries in a row, then I can understand how it's "bad", but otherwise it's just saying that you don't get to win because you've won. :smallconfused:

Although, I guess it might be hard for the judges to pick out which of your entries they like the most if they're pretty even in overall, so that you might get high amounts of votes, but they're split over far too many entries...

The Logic behind this:

All in all, it is "better" to post one darn amazing image which gets full marks from all the judges rather than 3 darn amazing ones which still might all get the full marks, but spread among themselves - then someone else might score all seconds and get the first place instead.

And if you post lots you end up in a situation where a judge with particular tastes might put one of your images highest while none other do so, but an other posters entry while still not as awesome speak to the broader masses and net more points overall from all judges (although none had it as their favourite).

Judges vote for entries, not for artists, so even if every judge was a fan of Serp's style, they might pick a different entry as their favorite.

It's nice seeing lots of entries though. I like that better than people gaming out ways to win.

Looks like a dragon-pony to me, but you could put it in as Dragon if you want. As for your question, because that's the rule.
It's still an avatar.

Rules

And maybe I am misunderstanding something (rule 4?), but I can't find anything about submitting to multiple categories.

Serpentine
2011-06-05, 09:39 AM
It's still an avatar. Then enter it as Dragon Avatar if you want. But I expect Haruki will say it's not a dragon, only draconic, and therefore for the Draconic category. But it's up to him *shrug*

And maybe I am misunderstanding something, but I can't find anything about submitting to multiple categories. It refers to "category" in the singular. Enough people have gotten confused over time that perhaps it might be worth making it more explicit in the rules, but it's always been 1 category/entry.

Hmmm..... I think it could be either Dragon or Draconic in this case, I suppose, it's up to you. But it has to be one or the other, not both.

And either way I'd suggest neither: Submit it as an Avatar. The Best Avatar category is there precisely so that actual avatars have a category of their own otherwise you have simple 120x120 avatars competing against huge 700x700 scenes and there's just no comparison. Avatar-sized entries CAN be submitted to other categories, but it's best to submit them as avatars if you hope to win.

When I took over I even considered removing this category because I didn't like using image sizes to define a category... but we decided it would be best left alone for that single reason.

At any rate, if the rules are confusing in regards to submitting a single avatar in multiple categories, I'll look into a better definition and edit it in later.

EDIT: Also, I know it's a screen-stretcher, but if you spoiler it, it could be missed by the judges, so please remove the spoiler tags. Or at least remove them when the contest ends. >.<

Almost finished updating the Hall of Fame... I do so like this new idea of posting the winning entries with the prizes. Makes things so much easier. But... Haruki, if it's no trouble, would you mind posting the prize first and the winner second? Using the same format, with numbers and punctuation, as in the HoF would be useful too, but the image-order's more annoying.
Also, if everyone could tell me who's made trophies, that'd be handy too. I've decided to add that to the Hall of Fame.

Not that anyone is going to judge factual accuracy, it's just that I was curious about the name ;PThe original was what I linked to: Tiamat, Babylonian primordial goddess of the ocean of Chaos before Creation, one of the oldest examples of Chaoskampf and the stuff from which the Babylonian god (Marduk, or sometimes one or two others) created the world. Not described in any ancient texts as a dragon, exactly, but sometimes apparently depicted as such and later generally accepted as a dragon-goddess.

The line between "sea serpent" and "dragon" is extremely blurry at best. Yes, there are reliefs that are interpreted as depicting Tiamat as a dragon, which makes me wonder about the "no ancient references to Tiamat as a dragon" thing (I was gonna have to look into that for my honours - so much for that). But she wasn't just a sea serpent - she was the primordial chaos-ocean of space and pre-existance itself.

Can't change any of the rules for a contest currently underway... I suppose I could add a "non-oots" category for the next one or something. There used to be a Best Erf category, so something along those lines... I don't know.

Truth is, it doesn't become a problem so often that I'd have thought of it by now.

Selfish motives of course. :smalltongue:We do have a rough guideline of "at least oots-inspired", with some flexibility as to what exactly that means. Is there anything in particular that's bugging you this time, though? I had a look but nothing leapt out at me.

Might as well submit hand-drawn masterpieces and call it Iron Artist right?Well there was one pencil-drawn piece last contest, and I think there was at least one person who put in such things on a fairly regular basis, so...

It's probably just me overreacting. Yours Serp definitely have that OotS feel to them, and it does appear that although skirting the edge, many of them do seem oots-inspired.

If it's one of my pieces, I'm fully willing to remove it if it's not OotSy enough. I try to preserve it in each one, but sometimes I kind of lose myself in making it look pretty >.>;

I figure you can be the best judge on that. I really don't want to step on people's inspiration because they are really good. Lose yourself! The only one that is too awesome for words is your Frostfell Dragon. <___<;;

Now I feel sorry I ever brought it up.

Nice job!
But I was wondering, what do you use to make your pictures?
Inkscape/MSPaint/something else?
Because Inkscape is usually really smooth (like Kid Kris' Red Lungs), but your curves are too curvy to be made in Paint (or you're just pro on Paint).

Yeah, I use paint too. Clearly I'm not as good at it as Kid Kris, but it works for me. I wouldn't consider myself pro, though. If you see the sketch I drew that I was working from, it lost some of it's original quality.

After spending the longest time ever for me on one single work, I finally finished this:

Best Dragon Scene
Uprising of the Fading Legend
http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/53/dogfight.png

As a consequence of the industrial revolution, the role of dragons and other beasts was diminished as the humanoid nations grew both stronger and bolder thanks to the technological advances. Many lesser beasts were exterminated during the rapid expansion of rivalling nations into the unclaimed wilds, and by time, even the mightiest dragons faced the choice between submission and death as the numbers of secluded retreats dwindled.

Many of the evil dragons wouldn't accept their fate, and they would from time to time rise against the new rulers of the world, and in time face their extinction. The last uprising was that of the red dragons. Having been outrivalled by the much cheaper aeroplanes during the Great War, they hoped to exploit the disarmament treaty following the peace to once again establish their lost power and wealth. 4 months and 4 fallen nations after the beginning of the uprising, they finally would face what had succeeded them when the decisive battle took place in the sky over the important industial port town of Firham.

Decisive, but not particularily challenging. The dragons wouldn't win this battle. My apologies if this spoils the outcome for you. I can't speak as thoroughly about it on this limited canvas. They were outnumbered, outsped and outgunned. They would be killed, routed, captured and exterminated, and the new world order would finally be established for good.

Man, I just think too much about what I'm doing. This is actually the shorthand verson of the shorthand verson. :smallwink:

Also, I would have added more planes and more dragons (especially more planes) to it, but that would either have made it too cluttered or too big (or everything in it too small).

Three (technical) things, though:

First, it's 1 cathegory (+ Rookie) only (I think, the discussion earlier didn't reach a satisfying conclusion). Now, you have an avatar-sized drawing, and one larger, so you could enter them separately as a Best Dragon Avatar and a Best Dragon
Second, they lack a title. Or, rather, they aren't entered with one (as they contain what I see as a perfect title).

Third, the entries aren't formatted the way they should, namely:

Don't worry, it's not like you're going to get stabbed or hated for life for not getting it right the first time, but the judges rely pretty heavily on impression (given that that's what art is about), so it's good to make a good one. :smallwink:

Most modern renditions (including the awesome and oddly accurate Valhalla comic) don't render them any bigger than the Aesir and Vannar. Actually.

May be because Tyr, god of war and Loki, god of mischief are Jotunn themselves and they seem to be the exact same size as everybody else.

I am suprised nobody has done this one yet although Serpentine mentioned a while back there was a specific "Smaug" contest some time ago. I had some other ideas for this contest but this last month has just been too hectic to try and create anything. I am hoping that the "Turtle Dream" gets first place in this category, that one is just wonderful.

I'm actually surprised by how little inspiration I'm getting for this... I was thinking of doing the story of Melusine, but my idea was going to be a whole lot of work to just put in "Best Draconic".
Looks like the one in the cover of the book.. Now who was the artist who drew the picture.. I always forget. Bah, Wikipedia to the rescue! It's based on a picture from a Hobbit-themed calendar I had at some point. I think it's similar to the one on the cover of one edition, but I don't think it was ever actually used for it.
edit: It's by one John Howe (http://www.john-howe.com/portfolio/gallery/details.php?image_id=4), and it's one of my favourite dragon pictures - and I collected dozens in high school :3

Seriously. Words cannot describe how much I want this (well, maybe they could... but not in a forum-appropriate way). Although it looks kinda like my dragon lamp... which looks like this:http://www.mythicalbc.com/uploads/3/6/8/1/3681926/671162_orig.jpgexcept with colour - reds and yellows - which makes it much prettier.

Any Silmarillion / Children of Hurin fans out there? The story of Turin and Nienor and the dragon Glaurung has a lot of memorable and tragic images that would make some great scenes.

I already have a dragon lamp. It looks like that picture I posted, except that it's coloured. And it looks a bit like that bronze I linked to.

Some of the scenes out of the Silmarillion I had wanted to try to draw but I couldn't find the time to even look for any of my books let alone take the time to draw them. Thats why I settled for the Bilbo scene since Invisible Bilbo and just Smaug's eyes could be knocked out in one evening.

My goal is to contribute at least one entry to these contests each month no matter how bad my art is. The hardest part of this drawing was figuring where to put "The One Ring" on Bilbo. With the placement of his right hand the ring didn't show up very well on the middle or lower finger so I finally chose to place the ring on what would be his thumb (sorry Elan but to me you guys do have thumbs) at least there you can tell what it is.

There's also approximately 85 entries to decide from. 85 entries that fit into 6 categories. Avatar, Dragon, Draconic, Dragon Scene, Rookie, and Best Overall.

A tighter time limit for judges, you say... i'm in favor of that, in light of the recent discussions. <_<

So far I've been doing it monthly because.. that's just how it was when I first participated in an Iron Avatarist (Fine Arts). I could consider giving the judges a shorter time limit (the limit is currently the end of the month). If you guys want to discuss that we should probably take it to the discusion thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=207157), though.

As for the current one: The problem is that I don't have the trophies yet. I'll try to get the whole thing done tomorrow. Trophy making is a long process.

Had I actually had time for this one, I would have loved to try and make something really off the wall and only tangentially related to dragons: an OotS avatar of Packy (http://www.ifightdragons.com/member/i/1605273/), the bespeckled guitarist of the up-and-coming Chicago-based band I Fight Dragons (http://www.ifightdragons.com/), complete with NES guitar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9qB-IsO8zw).

Hmm... hadn't thought of that. I think that if you're going to be posting smilies up the implication is that they're going to be used, but I'll think about re-hosting them, anyway. For that added shade of guilt-free-lessness. Also, added insurance against them suddenly disappearing, especially the ones made by artists who no longer frequent these boards.

Also, looks at Hall of Fame.
How did that happen?

Did he really, or did I make a mistake?

edit: No, I know what it was, I think. If it's what I'm thinking of, he didn't get it into the first contest in time for it to be judged, but VT liked it so much he gave it an award. Then we agreed to let him enter it again to be judged properly. He was meant to have to give up the first one, but then we went with "meh".
