Elhrim or dm only. Violators will be fed to the dire beavers.

On the other side is a dwarf sitting at a desk with a pile of papers strewn throughout. He glances up as you enter and says, "Oh, another one? Sign this and please don't disturb the papers on my desk." He pushes a paper your direction.

Elrihm
2011-06-12, 02:04 AM
Mord looks down to read what the dwarf had told him to sign.

It appears to be a non-disclosure agreement.

Elrihm

Mord shrugs, and signs the paper, handing it back to the dwarf.

He waves you on through the iron black door behind him.

Elrihm
2011-06-12, 11:41 AM
Mordricari is beginning to feel more than a little sketched out, and as he goes through the iron door, begins wondering how he could escape if it comes to that.

planswalker
2011-06-12, 11:50 AM
Beyond the iron black door is a pair of spiral staircases. One is labeled "employer", the other "employee". A well-groomed halfling greets you and says, "Good sir, what will it be? Looking to place a job or find one?"

Elrihm
2011-06-12, 11:56 AM
"Good afternoon sir", Mord bows low, "I just entered the city today to find a job, thank you."

planswalker
2011-06-12, 12:05 PM
"Very good sir. Follow me." He begins to walk up the stairs to the left, labeled "employee".

Elrihm
2011-06-12, 12:09 PM
Mord looks around, taking everything in, hoping to remember the layout of the place for future reference, or quick escape as he follows the halfling up the stairs.

planswalker
2011-06-12, 12:16 PM
He finds the second floor to have a large array of hallways, spaced evenly throughout the floor.

The halls are labeled by category, and the doors with names of employers. Kel finds that one hall is holding rooms for "problem solving - discreet" and another "personal protection - quiet" that have sword symbols beneath their text.

Elrihm
2011-06-12, 12:21 PM
"Where should I go? I'm a translator with a knack for getting information, you see, sort of like urban recon. I don't do too terribly well with open combat, so the personal protection seems a little off for me...", Mord seems fairly unsure, certain that this decision could haunt him for some time.

planswalker
2011-06-12, 04:30 PM
sorry about the slow posting. Didn't get an email alerting me when you posted.

"Well, there are dozens of halls up here criss-crossing each other. One of them is bound to have what you're looking for."

Elrihm
2011-06-12, 07:26 PM
Mordricari bows low again, and moves off, reading the labels for each hall.

It's fine, I tend to post a lot more frequently as I'm out of college right now. I can't expect other people to have the same amount of free time.

planswalker
2011-06-12, 08:50 PM
there are literally dozens of halls each with unique names. Basically, pick a description that fits what you're looking for, phrase it like the two examples given, and I'll populate that hall with a couple options which fit the city.

Elrihm
2011-06-12, 09:01 PM
"Hmm, I think I could do this one. 'Information retrevial". Of course, the hall labeled "problem solving" looked interesting too." Mord moves down the first hall, and looks around.

by first i mean the first one i mentioned

planswalker
2011-06-12, 09:09 PM
There are eight doors down this hall. Four of them have nameplates on them.

Elrihm
2011-06-13, 06:16 PM
Mord goes up to the first one with a name plate on it, reads the inscription there, and then goes in.

planswalker
2011-06-13, 06:24 PM
the nameplate reads: Johan Drosselmeyer.

The room is rather bare, with four white walls and a white floor. The ceiling is white as well, but a small black stone has been placed in the center. A female voice emanates from it, asking, "Name?"

Elrihm
2011-06-13, 06:26 PM
"Ahem, Mordricari at your service. What can I do for you, my lady?", Mord replies, slightly taken aback at talking to a stone.

planswalker
2011-06-13, 06:35 PM
"I am not the client, only a facilitator. Should I decide you are suitable, I will give you a referral to the client, and you will meet with her at her estate."

Elrihm
2011-06-13, 06:41 PM
"Ah, I understand, milady. What do you require of me to weigh the quality my abilities against your standard?

planswalker
2011-06-13, 06:53 PM
"What makes you think you are qualified for the position?"

Elrihm
2011-06-13, 07:56 PM
"Well, I am by trade a mage. Through this, I have access to spells that change my appearance, cloak me in invisibility, open locks, and allow me to fly. In addition to my normal repertoire of spells, I have learned how to manipulate space to teleport 10 feet out, and can spontaneously cast divination, allowing me to spy on those it would be benefit me to with alacrity. However, I have no skill with arms, and am loath to engage in open combat, seeing so many easier routes to get what I want."

planswalker
2011-06-13, 08:17 PM
"Indeed, you claim to be a spymaster. Tell me what color my eyes are and you'll prove you aren't bluffing."

Elrihm
2011-06-13, 09:40 PM
"Hmm, an interesting challenge for someone I have no idea of name or description."

Mord thinks about it for a second, and sits down with his spell book, flipping the pages looking for an answer. After a few minutes he shrugs, closes the book an begins his attempt.

He's going to cast spells in rapid succession and see what sticks.

First, he reaches within his mind and unravels a few spells, freeing up magical energy. He then takes a first level spell and cast identify upon the black gem. After that he casts detect secret doors, and concentrates long enough to examine the entire room. Finally, finishing off his preliminary examination, he casts detect thoughts, and scans the room, finally focusing on the black gem.

DC 15 will save for detect thoughts

planswalker
2011-06-13, 09:55 PM
you paying the material component costs for those spells?

The black stone is a stone of speaking. They come in linked pairs. Every spoken word in one room with a stone is transmitted to the other. They have a range of 1/4 mile to them.

There is in fact a hidden door on the far wall from where you came in.

You do not detect any thoughts.

Elrihm
2011-06-13, 10:17 PM
yep, identify has a 100 material cost, I'll need to stock up again, but w/e. the rest are mundane or focuses with no cost.

Mord nods in affirmation, his supsicions confirmed. He takes a moment and cast locate object on the bonding pair of the stones. Once a link has been established, he sits down and draws some of his most powerful magics to cast clairvoyance to magical see the room in which the stone is being held.

planswalker
2011-06-13, 10:23 PM
The other stone is located about fifteen feet beyond the hidden door. Your clarivoyance reveals that she is in fact a tiefling whose eyes are pure black with no whites or irises.

Elrihm
2011-06-13, 10:29 PM
Mord leans over, knocks on the door, and says to the stone, "Your eyes are the deepest black, milady."

planswalker
2011-06-13, 10:43 PM
"Good job. You not only found out my eye color, you found the hidden door as well. Come on through."

The hidden door slides away, and the tiefling is sitting behind her desk exactly as you saw it.

"Any questions before I give you the address?"

Elrihm
2011-06-13, 11:28 PM
Mord walks through the hidden door, and stands hand behind his back as he address the tiefling, "Hmm, no. I don't believe I do. I'm fairly sure my compensation will be appropriate, considering the resources allocated to maintaining anonymity.

planswalker
2011-06-13, 11:45 PM
"Indeed. Want me to not tell you where to meet your boss and force you to scout for it so you can show off?"

Elrihm
2011-06-13, 11:57 PM
Grinning, Mord replies, "I deserved that. I do believe you are going to make me do that regardless. Here, at least give me a sealed letter containing her address, that way if I break the seal, I'm admitting I wasn't good enough. Will I see you there, or will you be staying here, if it is my place to ask?"

While this conversation is happening, Mord looks over the tiefling, and picks out a personal effect to remember for later.

planswalker
2011-06-14, 12:09 AM
"Very well." She hands you a sealed letter. "If you get stumped, just use a divination to read the letter without opening it. I have to give you the letter anyways, for it authenticates that you are sent from the Flint. I work as a facilitator at the Flint, and when one contract is filled, I find another to work on."

Elrihm
2011-06-14, 12:17 AM
"Well, thank you very much.", Mord turns and walks out.

"Damn...I was hoping I could follow her there." Mord thinks. With a shrug, Mord opens the letter and reads it as he makes his way back out, not really caring about showing off to a stranger.

planswalker
2011-06-14, 12:38 AM
The address is to a house on Scale Street in North Market.

Elrihm
2011-06-14, 12:45 AM
Mord folds up the piece of paper, and slips it inside his robe, in one of the pockets there. He then makes his way out of the Sad Flint, trying to get back to the Plaza.

planswalker
2011-06-14, 12:47 AM
Amazingly enough, the plaza still starts right outside the Flint's door.

Elrihm
2011-06-14, 12:55 AM
Hey, things could have changed!

Mord looks around at the plaza, and then sets off, looking for North Market, and then the address on the letter.

planswalker

North Market is the ditrict north of Midtown, which the plaza is central to.

Elrihm
2011-06-14, 01:25 AM
Once there, Mordricari begins looking for the address.

Knowledge (local)
[roll0]

planswalker
2011-06-14, 10:53 AM
He finds it rather quickly. The main house is a rather odd construction. It appears to be a clock tower converted into a living space, and the chime as you arrive right on the hour indicates that it is still functional.

The yard is unkempt and appears to have been neglected for years, although the tower itself is in good repair. There is a single wooden door facing the street to allow entrance into the house.

Elrihm
2011-06-14, 11:49 AM
After taking in the sights, and wondering about the client, Mord walks up to the door and knocks.

planswalker
2011-06-14, 04:28 PM
There is no response within. You notice that the door is not locked.

Elrihm
2011-06-14, 04:33 PM
Mord looks around, and then pushes the door open, going inside.

planswalker
2011-06-14, 04:37 PM
The entire first floor seems to be filled with mechanical gears and mechanisms all churning away and busily doing whatever it is for. A spiral staircase leads upwards.

Elrihm
2011-06-14, 08:32 PM
As Mord walks through the first floor, looking at the many machines, he calls, "Hello? Anyone home?". and moves up the staircase.

planswalker
2011-06-14, 09:49 PM
the click-clack of mechanical gears is his only response.

On the second floor, there is a hallway with several doors leading off to either side. The hallways ends in a study that is covered with dust.

The stairs continue upward.

Elrihm
2011-06-14, 10:07 PM
Mord looks around at the dust, and continues up the stairs.

planswalker
2011-06-14, 10:15 PM
The next set of stairs leads to a locked door. There is no lighting up here, but there is a crack of light coming from underneath the door and you can hear a scratching sound on the other side.

Elrihm
2011-06-14, 10:26 PM
Mord knocks on the door, and calls, "Excuse me, is anyone here? I'm here about the job you posted."

planswalker
2011-06-14, 10:47 PM
"Ah, the wizard knocks on the door, and it swing inward of its own volition." A dry, raspy voice calls out. Then, like magic, the door seemingly obeys his commands, opening inward. The room beyond houses a rather massive printing press. A wooden mannequin has been posed leaning over it as if monitoring it.

Elrihm
2011-06-14, 11:07 PM
Galath walks in and looks around, fascinated with the magic in the room. "Um, hello? I was sent from the Sad Flint, I'm the information retrieval specialist."

planswalker
2011-06-14, 11:32 PM
A voice emanates from the ceiling. "Ah yes. Tell me, what kind of information are you best at retrieving?"

Elrihm
2011-06-14, 11:58 PM
"Well, before we get into specifics, I really would like to see you, for security reasons. People have lots of enemies, and who is to say you aren't posing as my contact? I may just be paranoid, but it keeps me sharp."

planswalker
2011-06-15, 12:17 AM
"And how would seeing me help you know if you are speaking to your contact and not an imposter? For all you know, I'm a scaled and horned demon."

Elrihm
2011-06-15, 12:30 AM
"Personally, I don't care what you look like. It would just give me a face to recognize for later. I suppose it's not terribly important, the job is, and I can respect the level of magic you have working here. What information do you need, and what recompense are you offering, sir?"

planswalker
2011-06-15, 12:35 AM
"I need stories and lore, secrets and tales. The rarer and less widely heard, the better your pay will be. Find me obscure tales of tragic heroes. Quality is also important, and far more valuable than quantity. Old and new, it matters not, so long as the tragedy is fresh."

Elrihm
2011-06-15, 04:08 PM
"Tragic heroes, hmm? Well, I think I might have one for you already, a story no one has heard, maybe not so very heroic, but very tragic. Years ago, in a town to the south, there was a village, where after years of cultivating the land, life had become prosperous, even easy. Perhaps it was this prosperity that drew them, no one really knows, but one night, as a young mage was exercising his powers, sending his mind out to cover miles of terrain, he felt them. Giants had come to this peaceful town. Afraid, the mage hid away as boulders rained down, and buildings turned to rubble. In one night, everyone he had ever known died, perhaps because of his cowardice in not warning the town. Miraculously, the mage survived, but is forever haunted by the errors of that night, forever tainted by his cowardice..."

That's my character's backstory.

planswalker
2011-06-15, 04:42 PM
"Ah, yes, that one. I have that one already. Was a nice little piece of work. Since I already have that one, you get nothing, but it's nice to reminisce over my old work. Give me a story I don't already have, and you will be well paid."

Elrihm
2011-06-15, 04:57 PM
Mordricari nodded his head, and left the room, shutting the door behind him.

"Already known? How the devil...", Mord thought as he walked, "Where the hell am I going to get a story he hasn't heard if that one is known to him?"

Thinking about it, Mord goes back to the Sad Flint thinking that the birthplace of adventure in this city would be a grand place to start. Perhaps if this didn't work, a library might hold information, though the crazy man would have probably perused those tomes. If it comes to it, perhaps I will need to create my own story for him...

Once at the Sad Flint Mord orders a cheap drink from the bar, and all but ignores it as he begins to gather information from the patrons there about tales of tragic heroes.

Gather Information
[roll0]

Bah, my gather information is terrible. Oh well.

planswalker
2011-06-15, 05:16 PM
the drink is 1 silver.

You learn nothing that hints of a story that the crazy man wouldn't already know.

Elrihm
2011-06-15, 06:21 PM
"Well, that's a little expected I guess.", Mord thinks as he leaves and checks the time, "Can't expect just anyone to have ancient lore, still it needed to be checked. On to the university."

After checking the time, Mord wanders over to the university, to inquire about registration fee, thinking that a school might be the best place to seek stories.

planswalker
2011-06-15, 07:25 PM
The registration fee is 3,000 gold, and tuition is 5,000 per semester. The only university in Aldhaven is the mage university where one goes to enhance their magical knowledge and prowess. Reagents are not cheap, neither is the other accessories to training mages and giving them practical experience.

The registration fee for your first semester does go towards your tuition.

Elrihm
2011-06-15, 07:41 PM
"Hmm, well I'll have to pull some resources to get in, until then I guess I need to find a new job, and keep this as a side."

Mord heads back to the Sad Flint, and goes up to the bar keep, "Is my password still good? I don't have anymore cash, and I need more immediate funds before I can start on that job."

planswalker
2011-06-15, 07:44 PM
"Sorry, we only allow people one active job at a time from the Flint. Why do you need a second job for? Does yours not pay well enough?"

Elrihm
2011-06-15, 07:54 PM
"Well, it requires access to some rather unusual information that is not in one discernible location. It's mainly a never ending search for stories, not really a "job". I understand the rule about only one job though, I'm merely trying to accumulate funds to get into the university where there will hopefully be an abundance of the information I seek. I'll just have to get more creative, although I don't see staying at this particular job for very long, not a huge fan of open ended jobs."

planswalker
2011-06-15, 08:07 PM
"Why the hell would you enroll at the university just to find stories? Why not just go to their library, and if that doesn't help, talk with them? It seems absurd to me that they would offer classes on 'ancient and untold stories'."

Elrihm
2011-06-15, 09:38 PM
"I had no idea they were so open with their knowledge, thank you! I naturally assumed the secrets they hold would only be bought with coin. I shall head over there directly, though as I said, I don't know how long I will hold this job. After a few stories I might desire something new, would it be possible to give this one up at that time, seeing as how it is rather open ended?"

planswalker
2011-06-15, 09:51 PM
"Do you think they'd open up the secrets to students? For someone who acts smart, you could really use a shot of common sense. I had a city watchman come by earlier which said an arrogant sod who matches your description came up to him and wanted to know where the diplomats district is. Like the city has hundreds of neighboring countries to need such a massive number of people as to make their own district."

"If you cancel the contract with your employer, you could then apply here for a new job."

btw, getting the sorts of stories your patron wants won't be simply going to a library and reading them. It'll be things like looking for ancients tomes of forgotten lore and eldritch crypts.

Elrihm
2011-06-15, 10:07 PM
Mordricari flushes, and looks down, "Well...I'll think about what you said, job and otherwise. Thank you.". Mord clenches his hands together, and bows a little.

"Dammit, when will I stop being a coward..." Mord thinks to himself, about his initial interactions in the city. To think that was just this morning; so much had happened in a day, and his head was spinning. Perhaps sitting in a musty library wouldn't work, the crazy old coot would have looked there. But there is one other place...

Mord walks outside, and determines the time, and roughly how much is left of the day.

Yay for having low wisdom and charisma scores. The difference between knowing a tomato is a fruit and knowing not to put it in a salad, in addition to being terrible with people. Also, thanks for saying something, sitting in a library was my exact plan.

planswalker
2011-06-15, 10:12 PM
I hope you don't mind that the world responds accordingly to his actions.

It appears to be about an hour after noon.

Elrihm
2011-06-15, 10:24 PM
Meh, it's just how he is, and he will suffer the consequences and learn, or keep making the same mistakes.

Mord nods, making a plan. He had heard from the town crier about an old ruin that was open to peruse, and that might be a good place to at least start looking for ancient lore.

Four men in brown cloaks are roughing up a young man while a young woman screams in terror as they strike him with their fists.

Elrihm
2011-06-15, 11:30 PM
Mord hides behind something, surveying the situation.

"This is none of my business, best stay out of it. There are four of them, and I am but one combat spell-less mage."

planswalker
2011-06-16, 12:07 AM
Five minutes later, the four men get done savagely beating the helpless young man as his wife looks on with horror and you impassively watch.

Satisfied, the leader gives one more kick for good measure and the four head off.

Elrihm
2011-06-16, 12:24 AM
Mord uses the last minute of his invisibility to get away from the scene, and waits for the spell to expire. After it expires he moves back toward the couple, calling "Hello?! I heard screaming! Anyone there?"

planswalker
2011-06-16, 12:27 AM
The woman calls out, "Yes! My husband was beaten not two minutes ago. If you could hear me screaming, why did you not help us?"

Elrihm
2011-06-16, 12:32 AM
"You know how far screams echo lady? Anyways I'm here now, let's tend to your husband, he looks a mess. Who did this to him? Beasts or monsters would have torn him to ribbons.", Mord moves over to the couple and kneels to tend the mans wounds.

planswalker

"A group of thugs who wanted to know where the dungeon was. when my husband asked them for the usual fee, they told im that they should be demanding money form him. When he refused to give in, two of them held him while their leader beat him. The fourth one held a knife out and told me that to stay back if I knew what was good for my husband."

This conforms to what you yourself saw as you cowardly and selfishly watched him get beaten to a pulp.

Elrihm
2011-06-16, 12:46 AM
"Bastards. Do you know the direction they went in? Maybe I can teach them a few manners. Those cowards don't know the meaning of fear yet."

My character is a known coward. He does have strength within him, but it is going to take more than a farmer getting attacked for him to realize it. He has only ever run away, in fact all of his normally prepared spells are built for this. He is rather serious about his offer of hunting down those men though, they are in the way of what he wants and he thinks he can do it now without much open combat.

Elrihm
2011-06-16, 11:12 AM
Mord shrugs, "As you will, I was just trying to help. Do you think those men are done with you? They know they can push you around now, they know they can control you two. If you don't want to have to deal with them for a rather long time, I would be happy to deal with the scoundrels. I won't lie, I came here seeking the ruins, and after I do my best to kill those men, I will probably peruse them. I'm on a job that requires me to seek ancient lore, and I thought your ruins would be a perfect place to start. Now, will you point me in their direction, or will you live in fear?"

planswalker
2011-06-16, 12:58 PM
"If you kill them, we will give you what we can to help you. They headed off to the ruins. They're in our field just north of here."

Elrihm
2011-06-16, 01:05 PM
Mord touches his fingers to his brow in a salute, and stands. He then casts alter self, taking on the form of an avariel, a elf given wings. After an experimental flap or two, he launches himself into the sky, moving quickly to the north in the direction of the men. While Mord was a coward, he was not cruel, and some part of him stiffened with resolve after that conversation. The plan was only to get the woman to tell him where the ruins were, but now...well, it has yet to be seen if it will stay firm or dissolve in the face of adversity.

Mord goes up 30 ft, and moves quickly taking full-round movements looking for the robed men.

planswalker
2011-06-17, 01:09 PM
here is what's happened so far:

surprise round: you began summoning the dretch
round 1:
they took 2 move actions to run away
you finished summoning the dretch (leaving you a standard action) and the dretch takes its full round to move after them and catch itself in the web.

Elrihm

Baleful transposition has a spell resistance. Man...6 targets at DC 18 and not one works. Well one does, but he then succeeds on a higher DC. Dammit.

planswalker
2011-06-17, 10:54 PM
... how familiar are you with 3.5?

spell resistance applies for creatures that have a spell resistance. Not for everyone every time. You have to have a spell resistance for the spell resistance: yes tag of a spell to matter

when that does occur, the caster must make a caster level check against the sr of the creature.

Elrihm
2011-06-18, 12:34 AM
My groups have always ignored spell resistance as a mechanic. I'm very familiar with 3.5 though some things do get skipped as I only very recently made the switch to forum based, and generally play with the same group of friends, which means mistakes never get fixed when we learn them.

planswalker
2011-06-18, 02:19 AM
ah. by resists your spell, I meant that he made his will save. I say the spell was resisted when it's SR and that the person resists it when they make the will save.

very vague distinction, I know, but a bad habit I picked up in my RL group.

anyways, what happened to the action? where were we?

Elrihm
2011-06-18, 11:14 AM
Uh..oh yeah! I just landed in the web, and cast baleful transposition, he resisted my spell and ran away.

If nothing else happens, Galath flies up and away, back to the farm, after contemplating his remaining spells and fire power.

Elrihm
2011-06-18, 05:27 PM

Mord pulls out a torch and lights it with his flint and steel. As an immediate action would it be possible to teleport yet again behind the door, avoiding the ceiling? If so, mord does that. If not, he pushes through the rubble, and stands atop it, bumped and bruised, looking around.

planswalker
2011-06-19, 07:24 PM
no...

you can only do one immediate action per turn, which you've already done.

Elrihm
2011-06-19, 07:29 PM
Immediate magic varient, conjurer specialist abrupt jaunt 1/day/int bonus. Varients from UA were specifically allowed.

In that case, Mord stands up and looks around.

2011-06-19, 07:31 PM

Elrihm
2011-06-19, 11:17 PM
Oh, I didn't know that. Avariel isn't my natural race.

After unfurling his newly acquired wings, Mord realizes flight is impossible in the tunnels, and merely walks down the stairs, to peer through the doorway.

Mord activates blinking, and walks down the hall, every so often phasing out of existance, just to pop back in.

planswalker
2011-06-20, 02:50 PM
Unfortunately, you materialized at just the wrong moment and activate a pit trap five feet in front of you.

I promise you, that is as the adventure is written and I rolled a 50% chance of avoiding the trap altogether.

Elrihm
2011-06-20, 03:51 PM
It's ok, I'm actually enjoying the traps. I built this character with a few saving mechanisms (abrupt jaunt). I just need to play him more intelligently, rather than front loading my encounters with spells. Fairly soon though I'm gonna be out of tools, and am gonna have to back out to come again another day.

Mord blinks into being, just long enough to depress a stone underneath, opening a dark pit below him, and after a quick explicative, activates his abrupt jaunt to land on the other side of the pit as an immediate action.

Luckily for Mord, enough rubble lands in the left-hand square that only 6 pounds land in the right hand square. That leaves 24 lbs is the left, enough to slightly depress a trigger plate 5'x10' in width, covering both squares.

Elrihm

planswalker
2011-06-27, 08:42 AM
Mord does not notice the pressure plate until he steps on it. A fine orange powder drops down, but you feel no harmful effects at all, other than the gritty sensation of having orange powder all over you and seeping into all the cracks.

Apparently, whatever chemical agent this is has gone inert in the intervening years.

planswalker
2011-06-27, 08:49 AM
"Oops! Sorry about that! I don't know how I missed that one.

Just... be careful. I might have missed another one..."

He proceeds forward despite his own warning.

Elrihm
2011-06-27, 02:02 PM
Mord gives the guys a sideways glance after his back is turned, brushes himself off, and contemplates his journey. He thinks about everything that has happened so far, and comes up with a solution. He picks up his staff again, and uses it do depress the plate in front of him again, but only slightly, trying to figure out where the pressure plates are, so they might be circumvented.

planswalker
2011-06-27, 03:44 PM
Unfortunately, when he gets to the stairs, pressing on the floor does not trigger the tripwire before he trips on it. A deluge of a thick, brown fluid sprays from above and coats Mordricari. Before he can fully realize what has happened to him, the liquid and the powder react together and explode. Mord takes [roll0] damage.

Elrihm
2011-06-27, 06:23 PM
Well, if my character is able to, he uses abrupt jaunt to evade the damage, however it does not appear to be that way.

If not, he cries out, and is dropped to -1 hit points where he rolls a stabilization check.

[roll0]

EDIT: Also, I just reread that, and I brushed off the powder before continuing if that has any influence.

planswalker
2011-06-27, 10:44 PM
I looked up immediate actions, and just like swift actions, they can take place on another person's turn, but not in the midst of a standard or move action. Since traps trigger as immediate actions themselves, abrupt jaunt can only save you from ones where the effect is not immediate with the trigger, such as a falling pit.

since the powder got in everywhere, brushing off the excess bits doesn't help. You'll have to shower or have the powder react with the liquid to get rid of enough to not have it react with the liquid. A moot point about setting it off a second time if you've already gotten hit once.

You lie there near death, but, luckily, are not bleeding to death. You are relatively stable.

planswalker
2011-06-27, 11:05 PM

Elrihm
2011-06-27, 11:12 PM
Ok, that sounds good to me. I always seem prepared for the wrong traps :smalleek:. TBH, I was rolling up a new character, I thought for sure I was done.

"Close call...huh?" , Mord grins weakly as he stares up at his companion. He coughs up a chunk of blood, and sits up, "Thank you, I thought I was dead for sure. If you don't mind me asking, why are you here? You are obviously powerful, and you certainly don't need me, so why bother? Don't get me wrong, I'm very grateful you saved my life, but still I can't help but ask why?"

planswalker
2011-06-27, 11:25 PM

He can't help but grin as he says this.

Elrihm
2011-06-27, 11:32 PM
Mord also grins as he gets up, and brushes the soot from his body.

"Well, Rinthac, I don't know why you're here, or why you decided to keep around a bungler like me, but I will repay my debt to you, this I swear. In the mean time, shall we continue, and let me uncover the rest of these traps?"

planswalker
2011-06-27, 11:36 PM

Elrihm

Btw, elrihm, you don't get to modify your spell-list in the middle of the dungeon. I saw your edit where you changed SM3 for fly.

Elrihm
2011-06-30, 09:13 AM
That was supposed to be a blink spell as I'm supposed to have two prepared for today, not two SM3. I started tinkering with my character when I thought he was dead trying to improve him as a character, and thought I had gotten all the changes reversed. If you want me to, when I rest, I'll post my daily spells or other stats in the IC for bookkeeping.

EDIT: Btw has my alter self worn off yet?

planswalker
2011-06-30, 10:52 AM
since it has a 1-hour duration and you've used about 30 minutes of it, no.

do NOT tinker with your spell list unless you're re-preparing your spells for the day. even if somehow it isn't you trying to cheat, it looks indistinguishable from it. Don't write a character off as dead until he reached -10.

I saw your spell list as having one SM3 left last I can recall before you started changing it. That is the spell you have prepared there.

if you had blink, then edited it off, I saw it, then you tried to change it to fly, then back to blink, I have no way to know that.

it also makes me suspicious when you declare that you're using your last 3rd level spell but don't declare what it is. You did that every other time you cast a spell, why not this time?

you may either cast the sm3 spell or not, but that is the one you had left by my count before I noticed the spell list being altered.

That's fine. I'll use that instead, it works just as well. I promise I'm not trying to cheat, like I said a while back, this is my first text based campaign, and it takes a lot of getting used to. If you think I'm cheating, I have no problem posting readied spells at the beginning of each day, etc. I really don't mind.

Mord uses SM3, and has it (it being a dretch) walk all around the chamber, beginning with the glowing emblem in the center.

When it enters the circle, nothing happens. However, when it leaves the circle, the room instantly fills with water, causing you, your companion, and your summoned creature to drown.

you may stave off the effects of drowning by holding your breath for 1 round per point of constitution score, and then for each round after that, you must pass a constitution check of dc 10+1 per each success of begin to suffocate under fast suffocation rules.

I promise, there is in fact a way to make the water go away. you're not stuck doomed.

Mord directs his creature to swim back to the circle and touch the glowing emblem, and Mord uses one round of air to perform a spot check in general, and then look at the entrance right behind him.

Also, is that per score modifier point or per ability score point?

per point of constitution score

aka, not modifier.

an iron door had closed down behind you to prevent the flooding from running up into the hallway behind you.

Thinking fast, he moves into the circle, desperately trying to get Mord's attention to join him.

Hey, I'm moving currently, and it's going to take a while for time warner to make it out to my new place. It will be thursday before they can make it up, so my posting will be limited to whenever I'm at a hotspot with my laptop.

Mord joins them in the circle.

The water vanishes as suddenly as it appeared. With a click, all doors unlock. A large pillar in one corner begins to slowly sink down.

He grabs Mordicari and takes of as quickly as he can down the next set of stairs, dragging him behind.

The two of you arrive in an antechamber. A large iron double door stands before you.

You hear a familiar sound of iron scraping stone as the door leading back to the drowning passage slams shut. A rush of water can be heard for a moment, then ominous silence.

Oh god, and I only have one abrupt jaunt left. If my character becomes the target of a ray attack, some other area based spell that he can see the caster casting, is attacked by the ogre or the non-spell casting human, he is going to abrupt jaunt to the right 10 ft.

He is also going to ready an action that attacks anyone who gets within 5 ft of him with the exception of the ogre.

Hey, I have a quick question. How do you do experience, and when would our characters get it? I've never been in the position where I might gain some with you DM'ing.

EDIT: Also, when will my alter self spell wear off? It's supposed to last 10 min/ lvl from when I cast it.

XP gained from combat is usually awarded immediately.
XP gained from this particular dungeon crawl will be awarded once we manage to escape it alive.

Mord sits down and breathes, relaxing from the day while taking note of the furniture and trappings of the room. After that, he chuckles a little, and pulls out the two tomes that he had rescued from the ruins, and sits down with them on the bed. A quick detect magic spell later, and a spellcraft check to identify the school of any aura found (I would like to know these), he considers opening them.

Sastified no magical traps are on these books, Mord opens them, and begins reading, trying to figure out what each one is about, hopefully they hold some tragic history.

one is a treatise on crafting and disabling locks, and the other is a spellbook with some spells in it.

Mordricari casts read magic, and identifies the spells in the new spellbook.

Once that is done, he dons his new magical equipment, puts the books back in his bag, and sets out to buy a small chest, a hammer, and some mounting spikes.

Once that is done, he goes in search for a shop that might want to buy his treatise on locks.

He isn't sure who would want the treatise.

the spells in the book:

pick five spells of first level, and two of second. they're what's in there. One of the second level and two of the first should be duplicates of ones you already know, and the others can be any sorcerer/wizard spell you wish.
