View Full Version : VUACS 2: Recruiting a Build Team!

As some of you may be aware, the inaugural Vote Up A Campaign Setting has been completed and is in publication. A lot of hard work and audience feedback built on the foundation established by the voters to craft a whole campaign setting by the popular voice.

And now it's time to do it again.

With Zeta Kai having stepped down, I have taken up the director's post for the second iteration of Vote Up A Campaign Setting. Having learned a lot about what worked and what did not from the previous attempt, I have formulated a new strategy for this project aimed at a far faster and more cohesive final product. The first part of that strategy is to assemble a larger, new build team to work on the homebrew elements.

I'm putting out the call for homebrewers, writers, even artists if that's your skill. I want to build a team that can give me fresh new ideas, challenge my opinions, improve on my own works and work together to craft the next campaign setting.

If interested:

• Post showing interest. There are a lot of homebrewers on these boards whose work I know.
• Let me know what you think you'll contribute/what you're best at. Don't say "being awesome" or any variant thereof, the joke is old.

To consider before applying:

• If you cannot work under direction, this is not for you.
• I am considered a harsh perfectionist. Bear that in mind when volunteering.
• Your contributions are welcomed, but they may be rejected for project reasons.
• IRC discussions will be the preferred mode of collaboration between myself and other project members (followed by PM).
• Build team members are expected to uphold certain standards of project secrecy. People who simply must spoil what they know need not apply.
• This project will be devoted primarily to D&D 3.5 Edition.
• All contributions made are posted under a cc-by-nc (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Commons_licenses) license. If you are asked to leave the project, or ask to remove yourself, your opinions, contributions and other input will remain with the project to use at the build team's discretion.

Samples of Work

Creative Writing - The Host of a Thousand Princes Part one (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10760420&postcount=386) Part Two (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=11014983&postcount=459)

3.5 Homebrew, Base Class - Malefactor (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=202885), Witch Doctor (Unfinished) (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=198321)

3.5 Homebrew, Alignment Replacement - The Color Wheel (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=174163)

3.5 Homebrew, Prestige Classes - Nightsingers (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169722), Children of the Mausoleum (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=116191)

3.5 Homebrew, Artifacts - Instruments of Wrath (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169722), The Plothook Artifacts (http://plothook.net/RPG/showpost.php?p=396027&postcount=2) (note: the latter are based on posters that I know personally, and as artifact-class objects are likely wildly unbalanced. Use in real game situations sparingly).

3.5 Homebrew, Race - Dusk Dancers (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=184532)

I like to think of myself as a pretty versatile homebrewer; I'll help out with balance considerations, wording or re-wording, PrC creation, and I'll even try to turn my hand to feat or race creation (though I'm less confident about those two). I'm also willing to try and expedite any work handed to me and just to be an attempted Voice of Reason if things hit the fan.

Warning: Gareth may flake due to IRL issues. Do not put Gareth in a position of major responsibility over others.

I'm willing to help with the brewing but my idea of fun is pretty far removed from Gareth's or Stycol's so I'd probably be best left to editing and proofing.

My brews can be found in Fae-o-matic and Mythic Aberdeenshire.

I'll also happily produce artwork or cartography. See Mythic Aberdeenshire or my deviantart (http://mulletmanalive.deviantart.com) for details, though be warned that I'm nowhere near as good as Aaron/Stycol.

I would like to help with this. I'm familiar with 3.5e and have a strong grasp of the mechanics, though I would prefer to work on fluff more than on crunch. I have done a bit of home brew and regularly GM for friends (always in custom worlds). My fluff tends to be heavily based on researched real-world analogs from folklore and mythology, though I can write completely original work as well. I'm on IRC already so message me if you're interested in my help. :smallcool:

I'd be willing to help, though I realize I may not be the best applicant. I'd warn ahead of time that I tend to get distracted & my work has in shown to be inconsistent. I've also been known to take breaks of varying length from my projects (though actual deadlines placed by others do tend to help there, as does the ability to reliably bounce ideas off others). Also my general ideas on can frequently clash with the preferred norm (though some of my homebrew has shown that isn't always the case).
Not quite sure what to do with IRC, not ever really having used it, but I could likely figure it out if needed.
Examples of my work can be found in my signature.

I'd be willing to throw my hate into the ring. I've mostly done fluff- heavy works, but also one or the other monster, race or prestige class. I usually can devote an hour or two almost every day during slow times work, and probably large chunks of my evenings.

As for things I've done:

My most recent thing is the Octocrow (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=202803), but that's not all that serious.

Apart from that, my bigger projects were: Planetouched Races (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=109785), Findelwald's Diseases of the Planes (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=129929), The Silver Heaven of Lunia (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=174339) for the now more or less dead Celestial Project and Etherworld (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=157058), my own setting, which I still throw small stuff at, occasionally.

Caveat: I've never used IRC before, and I'm in Europe. Which means that if you're all Americans, it will probably go like it goes with most chat programs for me: I'll never see you online.

My Work

My Homebrew Setting: Blades Of Keran (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Blades_Of_Keran_(3.5e_Campaign_Setting))
Many of my spells can be found on my D&D Wiki Page (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/User:Milo_v3).

I am a writer and a homebrewer. I love to create new ideas or just putting a new spin on an old idea. I am currently writing a novel and enjoy creating fluff. I can create mechanics as well and I normally try to make the mechanics I create flavourful.

i wouldn't worry about that much. for one, this is a community-type thread, so your input is as valid as anyone else's. secondly, i'm not even offering my homebrewing services anyway, so it's a mott point as far as i'm concerned. and third, your stuff is pretty cool.

I guess I'll try my hand at being part of a large group.

I've found that I tend towards making prestige classes, although if I'm given a niche I can make a base class out of it, although I tend to have chronic worries like "but what if [a member of this class] isn't like [archetype an ability idea supports]", but I do think that I'm fairly competent at both(probably moreso at PrCs, given my greater experience with them).

Examples of work:

PrCs(and feats):
The Eldritch Project. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=191425)

The Defender (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=156811) Dwarven Defender redo/FeyBurn class.

The Wasteland Slayer (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8406268&postcount=2) and Wasteland Survivor (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8406273&postcount=3), for the Wastelander(see below).

Monsters:
The Burned-Frozen. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=179819)

Base Classes(and feats):
Wastelander. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8406258&postcount=1)

The Crystal Hunter (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10739739&postcount=4) and Crystal Caster. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10739752&postcount=5) Although, I'm not all that good with spellcasting base classes. Well, it's more that I've only done one, so I have basically no confidence in my ability when making one.

Thank you for the outpouring of interest! I think we have enough applicants at this point; I'm going to do a review of contributors, and then send messages contacting those successful with an invitation to join the build team. For those who have not been chosen this time, I encourage you to try again in the future, contribute to the voting, and count yourselves fortunate that you don't have to work for an evil violent sociopath.

I know quite a few people have already expressed interest in helping out, but I loved the first VUACS and would certainly be happy to help in any way I can. If you already have enough applicants, that's fine too.

Kellus' Application

Homebrewing Experience: I've designed several magic systems from the ground up, and have a lot of experience creating fun and interesting classes. Although I don't have much practice with monsters, on the player side of things I have an excellent sense of how the game works in reality and how to create balanced and cool player options.

Sample Homebrews
Base Class: Connoisseur (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=93577)
Base Class: Sagittarius (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=117933)
Base Class: Spy (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89385)
Magic System: Truenaming (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=4915339)
Magic System: Voodoo Magic (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63881)
Prestige Class: Nightfeather (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=117399)
Prestige Class: Scholar of the Damned (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=76315)
Location Building: Lodestone (Isle of X) (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66901)

What I Can Contribute: Although the worldbuilding was topnotch last time, the player options (most notably the prestige classes) could have used a closer look. I feel that the way that the player most clearly interacts with the setting is through their character options, and that having classes and other options which work well mechanically is equally as important as the writing in immersing the player in the world. Although I don't claim to be an expert I am well-versed in 3.5 and could assist in writing things people want to play.
