Our theme this month is...
Russian Reversal!
In Soviet Russia, Avatar submits You!
This Iron Avatarist is all about the X Y's You joke. You may feel free to take the joke and re-interpret it as you want. Notice that you do not have to take the exact "In Soviet Russia, X Y's You!" joke. Let loose, have fun. Be creative about it.

Remember: All artwork must be your own. Do not take, alter, or use any of the The Giant's art. Thanks.

Categories
There will be a First through Third place award for each of the following:

Best Reverse Avatar (Any creation of 120x120 or smaller. Please do not include "large versions". The avatar must stand alone.)
Best Reverse OOTSatar (Any entry based on the OOTS.)
Best Reverse Scene (Anything bigger than the above.)
Best Rookie Entry (only applicable to those who have never entered these competitions before)

And, of course, the Best Overall award.

And as an extra, The Ruki's Choice Award will be giving me out for whatever entry it personally like the most from any category.

Rules

1. All entries must be posted by September 1st at Noon, EST.

2. Every entry must include a bolded introduction as to what category you're entering in. Additionally, if it's your first time entering the contest, remember to add "Best Rookie Entry".

3. Every entry must include an itallic introduction as to what your entry is.

For example:
Best Reverse Avatar
In Soviet Russia, Forum posts you!

4. All entries may be submitted ONCE and for ONE single category. Exceptions to this include: Best Rookie Entries will be submitted for both categories, and all entries are contestants for the Best Overall and Ruki's Choice awards.
4.b. As an added note, when submitting a large scene, it is possible to submit one single character from the scene as an Avatar. For example: If you submit a large comic, you may submit the character used for that comic separately.

5. You cannot re-submit an entry previously submitted to an IA competition.

6. Do not use spoilers. It makes the judge's job that much harder, and they may do you harm.

7. Only the avatarist who created the avatar may submit it.

8. Please do not quote images. The entry/name will suffice.

9. Keep entries within PG-13 or better. Adhere to forum rules.

Good luck!

You're not stupid, Akrim.elf. The joke is fairly obscure and relatively old, if I recall correctly.

The joke usually goes like this: "In Soviet Russia, X does Y!" with X and Y being things that are normally the other way around. Like the above "Poem writes you!". Normally you would be the one writing a poem and not it writing you.

In Soviet Russia, dice rolls you!

In Soviet Russia, entry judges you!

In Soviet Russia, vodka drinks you!

In Soviet Russia, darkness casts Magic Missile at you!

In Soviet Russia, god worships you!

In Soviet Russia, program installs you!

In Soviet Russia, bow shoots you!

In Soviet Russia, troll bans you!

In Soviet Russia, spam deletes you!

Kris on a Stick

As an addition, the original jokes were largely political in nature, and had to do with Soviet Russia's unfortunate habit of keeping tabs on people. The punchlines in each case were meant to have a creepy double meaning, as opposed to just being a simple reversal. For example:

In America you can always find a party. In Soviet Russia, the Party can always find YOU!!

or:

In America, you watch television. In Soviet Russia, television watches YOU!!

And so on.

My personal favorite: In Soviet Russia, environment destroys YOU!!

Edit: In real life, you watch Big Brother*. In Nineteen Eighty-Four, Big Brother watches YOU!!

*If you actually do this, let it be known that I pity you, from the bottom of my admittedly miniscule heart.

In America, you break the law. In Soviet Russia, the law breaks YOU!!

One from my philosophy book:
In America, man exploits his fellow man. In Soviet Russia, the opposite is true.

Psssh. As someone whose entire family comes from Soviet Russia and travelled all over it and knew all sorts of people, I can semi-personally attest that the whole "The party is keeping tabs on you!" thing is largely a myth. Like they didn't have better things to do, what with the weapons race and all.

I shall put aside my obvious Commie brainwashing and enjoy the contest, though. I look forward to seeing these things visualised. :D

fizzybobnewt

It sounds like you've got it. It's a pun on the phrase "now you're thinking with portals" which means thinking in terms of portals to solve the puzzles, and "thinking with portals" as in you and the portals are thinking together. Except I entered it as "portals thinking with you" to fit the theme of reversal, as the pun still works.

But, shouldn't it be the other fighters cooking kirby? Or maybe, the Smash Ball beating up on players?

I was going to do the latter, and then I thought it would be more poetic this way. You know, as in "poetic justice". And more fun to draw.

Idea anyone can use:

Alright, four hours past. That was a fun contest, everyone!

NO MORE ENTRIES, PLEASE!

New contest will be up tonight, when I'm sitting at an actual computer, as this is a computer station. Results to World Tour should not take more than a day or two.

Also: If anyone would like to volunteer to make trophies for this contest, now would be a great moment to offer.

Haruki-kun
2011-10-21, 08:48 PM
This thread is technically in Necroland by now, so I got permission to bump it up because the results are in. I deeply apologize for this delay, but I had a lot of problems with the votes and then making the trophies without my usual tools (Illustrator instead of Inkscape. It's tough.)

As usual, I recommend/request that you save your trophies to your hard drive and possibly upload them to your own photobucket account, not because I don't want you to use mine, but because if I ever need to clear up my account, you'll lose your link.

Right now, This is Halloween is the ongoing contest and Film Festival is in judging.
