Hello y'all.

I posted this thread in 2007, and I think that there might be a few. (Just a few) of you that have come on to the scene a little bit after that. So since there is the influx of fresh blood, I thought it would be nice to relive the moments and see what every one of your first avatars looked like. If you happened to delete the very first, just post the oldest one that you've got.

And to spice it up a little bit, draw your very first avatar again and see how much your drawing style has changed!

Here's what I posted a few years back.

Comon you guys. Dig out those old files and show me your very first, (not first acceptable) or the closest one to being the first. Theres nothing to be ashamed of, everyone comes from humble beginnings :smallwink:.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v290/Yitsock/Drawings/avie.gif

My very first. I kind of planned it out on paper first, but its still the very first avatar of mine :smallcool:

YES, I want to see the monstrosities made by you. Don't worry, my blood can handle it. :smallwink:

Here's an updated version:

My first avatar, as far as I can remember, was this guy:

I'll redraw it later to see what it gives.

Brace yourselves, folks. The very first thing I ever drew in "oots style":

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h287/serpentine16/IronAvatarist/nerdpirate.jpg

And one of my first (and worst) avatars:
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h287/serpentine16/Avatarables/sarpynestae.jpg

I'll redo them sometime soon.

No you fool! How could the sword possibly leave that trail?! And that mouth! It cuts his head in half! D=

And now I have a new project while I'm still in an inkscapey mood. Yay!

Kris on a Stick
2011-08-18, 12:21 AM
I still can't remember which of these two I drew first...
http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x280/kriskatarn/Avatar%20requests/Kool-Aidavatarreq.png http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x280/kriskatarn/KidKrisAvatar.png?t=1256178429

The left one was a request, the right one my first avatar that wasn't the GiantITP Swashbuckler av.

My original avatar line, after which I spent some time hopping between several FFRP based avatars (like the gold dragon below), and my rogue (http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x280/kriskatarn/RogueKris-1.png) avatar, after which I finally ended up on my current series of Devil avatars:

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x280/kriskatarn/KidKrisAvatar.png http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x280/kriskatarn/KidKrisAvatar2.png http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x280/kriskatarn/PosingKidKris2.png http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x280/kriskatarn/ReturnofKK.png

Hell, here's my first devil avatar, for comparison:
http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x280/kriskatarn/KillerKris.png
The one to the left is so much better, ja?
(Okay so you can't actually see it because he's on fire right now. I mean my usual one.)

Um...

I actually think this was the first non-generic avatar I used:

http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc273/xilobucket/magikarp.png

Which I shortly changed to:

http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc273/xilobucket/VriskaAvvie.png
Holy crap I never noticed how freaking huge I drew her horns in that one.
Though tragically not in time for Gencon last year, in which I proudly displayed my level 100 magikarp badge :smalltongue:

I have a ton of old...you can barely call it "oots" style, stuff in my photobucket, which I may or may not have used for a very short period of time, though most of it isn't avatar sized so I don't think I ever used it as such :smallconfused:

yeah, I'm pretty sure I used mostly generic/non-oots avatars before those two...

Oblivion
2011-08-18, 07:45 AM
Here is the very first OotS avatar I ever drew. It was for the Sci-Fi IA:

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z82/Oblivion017/SciFi_IA/Leia.gif

I first did it in paint, and then re-did it in Inkscape for the same contest:

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z82/Oblivion017/SciFi_IA/Leia2.gif

All the avatars I did for that contest where actually my few firsts. I'll re-draw Leďa when I have some more time.

I'm sure there were older, but can't find them ATM.

Yes, if you can't tell, it was era where I worked mainly in bitmap art, not vector :E Not going to re-draw it because person that supplied sketch, lineart and initial colors for it disappeared and I'm afraid I'm not as good as she was :smallfrown:

http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100628104410/dungeons/images/4/49/Gyaszkcomicone.png

Then, the evolution:

Here I first got InkScape
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd233/SzilardG/Szilard3.png

Here I realized how to actually export images
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd233/SzilardG/Szilard3-1.png

I was getting the hang of things
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd233/SzilardG/Szilard4.png

I thought I had another iteration with a better sword and some armor, but here's the one with even cooler armor and stuff.
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd233/SzilardG/szilardavatar1.pnghttp://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd233/SzilardG/szilardavatar2.pnghttp://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd233/SzilardG/szilardavatar3.png

Then I changed it to a more normalish person
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd233/SzilardG/szilardavatar5.pnghttp://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd233/SzilardG/Szilard9.png

I've only recently started up my own custom avatars - my first was for Anime week:

http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/3316/hscavy2.png

...

We don't talk about the tentacle.

Some of my newer attempts include:

http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/2684/forbiddenfruit4.png

...a major revamp of the avatar with a greatly improved body shape, after Strawberries was nice enough to send me a template. Version 3 will be ready soon after Elemental Week.

Speaking of which, here are the three custom ones I've done for myself and other folks:

http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/6854/shivabus.png http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/4797/tempest.png http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/2350/dryad3.png

I'm especially pleased with the Trilby of Nature's Might in the last one. I'm also working on a new project....which is proving difficult due to conflicting art styles.....

Sometimes I wonder why I keep posting threads like this when they always seem to have a humbling effect on me. I guess it's a source of personal sanctification. Some of you are innately talented at drawing so that your first avatar is better than my last. :smalltongue:

I was trying to be too creative with my first avatar and ended up having really terrible color choice. The pose was mostly due to Peregrine's sodipodi avatar making guide. Now everyone just uses Trazoi and have amazing first OotS avatars. Then there was Lankybugger's amazing MS Paint avatar guide. Where has he gone? :smallfrown:

I used MS paint before I read Trazoi's guide - the avatars/OotS style things I did before reading it were of the same quality level as the magikarp, actually:

http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc273/xilobucket/DemonChild_Color01_Avatar.png

Squiggly horrible proportions everywhere!

I don't think I ever actually used this one.

Then I discovered Gimp, and things started coming along slowly:

My last GIMP thing:

And then came Inkscape, vectors, and Trazoi's guide:

@Elder Tsofu: What in the world are you talking about? I still prefer your art over mine. You ability to reimagine something is shown in your avatar remake. I have a low imagination level. At the same time I'm not able to judge whether you are speaking in a facetious manner or not.

@Crimmy: I would say that I wouldn't be especially proud of most of my avatars from before 2009. I had some questionable art styles (colored lines, oval/egg-shaped heads and some weird-shaped body bases), but finally circled back to original OotS-style with a touch of additional detail.

I shudder at some of my old creations. Although some of them were alright. I'm glad you didn't take my bad habits though.

It's most recent in the fact that I haven't really drawn anything since then. Haven't posted regularly on the forums in over a year now, and due to a computer reformat in the past, I lost Inkscape on my computer and haven't gotten around to re-downloading it.
