Hey guys,

I am making for my campaign a new homebrew cleric domain. It is a domain clerics, servants of the Serpent, old patron of snakes/serpents get. Now the Serpent is in my universe in fact stronger then say Boccob, Vee-Jas and other divine casters, but has his own agenda by promoting scaly folks. Thus, I was thinking of giving this domain highly optimized spells like:

0: Prestidigitation
1: Grease
2: Glitterdust
3: Fly
4: Polymorph
5: Teleport
6: Planar Binding
7: Control Weather
8: Polymorph Any Object
9: Shapechange

But, this is optimizing and as we all know, theme-related spells as far as coolness goes, beat raw optimization.

So ... I would kindly ask all scale-familiar folks to suggest spells for my new domain. It is old domain, ancient, we may put in even some re-modified stuff or change things. The only thing is - it has a scaly feel.

My basis for this domain is

Magic Domain

Granted Power

Use scrolls, wands, and other devices with spell completion or spell trigger activation as a wizard of one-half your cleric level (at least 1st level). For the purpose of using a scroll or other magic device, if you are also a wizard, actual wizard levels and these effective wizard levels stack.
Magic Domain Spells

Magic Aura: Alters object’s magic aura.
Identify: Determines properties of magic item.
Dispel Magic: Cancels magical spells and effects.
Imbue with Spell Ability: Transfer spells to subject.
Spell Resistance: Subject gains SR 12 + level.
Antimagic Field: Negates magic within 10 ft.
Spell Turning: Reflect 1d4+6 spell levels back at caster.
Protection from Spells M F: Confers +8 resistance bonus.
Mage’s Disjunction: Dispels magic, disenchants magic items.

... but that is just a guide. I really do not know any lizard-related spells. So help is much appreciated

Couple recommendations:

For the power, full poison immunity and maybe a way to convey poisons or apply poison to any weapon, and maybe a partial concealment or something.

Huge piece of advice: read Dragon Magazine 330 (http://www.scribd.com/doc/35192772/Accessory-Dragon-Magazine-330).

Snakebite from Magic of Faerun:
Transmutation, VS, 1StdAct, Personal, 1rnd/lvl(D)> – The caster’s arm turns into poisonous snake that can be used as a weapon. The snake does 1d3 damage and has a (1d6Con+1d4rnd Paralysis)/ (1d6Con+1d4rnd Paralysis) poison whose DC is (10 + 1⁄2 caster level + caster’s Wisdom modifier).

Fangblade from Dragon Magazine 330, p. 71):
Transmutation, VSF(living snake no more than one size category larger than the caster), 1StdAct, Touch, 1min/lvl(D)
The focus snake is transformed into the equivalent of a Longsword sized for the caster. The caster is considered proficient with the weapon. On a hit, the foe is affected by the snake’s poison (if any) in addition to the normal Longsword damage. If anyone other than the caster attempts to wield the weapon, the snake attacks its holder. The weapon has a Hardness of 8 & the snake’s hp at the time of the casting with regards to Sunder attempts. At the spell’s end, the snake returns to normal.

Poison(PH p262) – Touch deals 1d10 Constitution damage, repeats in 1 minute.

Animal Growth (reptiles & snakes) (PH p198) – One reptile or snake per two levels doubles in size.

Magic Fang, Greater(PH p250) – One natural weapon of subject creature gets +1 per three levels to attack and damage rolls –or– all the subject’s natural weapons get a +1 bonus.

Snake Shield(DR330 p72) –
Evocation Level: Clr 3, Drd3
Components:V, S, F
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration:1 round/level(D )
Grasping a snake in your hands, you infuse it with magical energy that creates a shimmering field containing the essence of its predatory instincts and stinging fangs. To observers, it appears as a cloud of ghostly snakes floating in a tight spiral around you. Anyone who attempts to touch you, either to deliver a spell or to strike you with a weapon, suffers an attack from these snakes. These snakes attack with the focus snake's normal bite attack bonus. If it has any special abilities, such as constrict, improved grab, or poison, it may use them against its target as normal(although it may only make a grapple check to hold and constrict for1 round, and may not maintain a grapple in subsequent rounds). The snake can attack a Single target once per round, but there is no limit to the number of different targets it can attempt to strike. Focus: A living snake

Serpent Storm(DR330 p71) – Evocation Level: Clr 6,Drd5
Components:V, S,F
CastingTime:1standard action
Range:Medium(100 ft. + 10 n./level)
Area: 20-ft.-radius spread
Duration:1 round/level(D )
Saving Throw: See Text
Spell Resistance:Yes
This spell causes the affected area to fill with a storm of deadly snakes that rain from above and form a dense carpet upon the ground. Anyone inside the area takes 1d6 points of damage per two levels of the caster. A Reflex save halves this damage. In addition, creatures caught inside the area must succeed at a Fortitude save or be poisoned by the bites. This poison deals an initial 1d4 points of Constitution damage and has no secondary damage. Creatures that avoid all of the bite damage avoid the poison as well. Creatures that remain in the area are subject to the poison damage each round. Finally, the area covered by this spell is treated as difficult terrain for the duration of the spell. The snakes that make up this spell appear just like the focus snake, but they are magical in nature and cannot be harmed. Focus:One snake that isno

Here we go. After much brewing ... first 5 spells of this new domain are made. Comments much appreciated.

Serpent Magic domain

Granted power: Once per day, you can cast one spell as quickened without the quickened spell using up a spell slot four levels higher than the spell’s actual level.

1 - Giant reptiles (as enlarge person, reptiles only)
2 - Hypnotic Pattern
3- Snake Rune (as Explosive Runes, acid dmg instead of force dmg)
4 - Magic circle against non-reptiles
5- Swarming snakes (as Black tentacles, 1d8+6 constrict dmg added to normal Balck tentacles effects )

Well, the granted power is really good, the spells not so much, except maybe for the last one, which gives clerics access to Evard's black tentacles.

The domain power is good, though it sort of impinges on the magic domain. Still, not a big deal. Giant Reptiles is alright as a first level spell, though definitely of limited scope (perhaps use Fangblade or Snakebite instead?). Hypnotic pattern and Snake Rune are odd choices and not particularly useful, they should be changed. Magic Circle against non-reptiles is way too good as it is essentially "Magic Circle Against Everything...except a few minor things". Swarming Snakes is perfect.
