Draw your Friends! XIII

Literature
(Over analysis of allegory practically implied)

Welcome to a new iteration of the Draw your Friends game/competition, the game/competition were you draw for a friend.

I'm one of your hosts, araveugnitsuga, you may call me Pink-Haired August.
Our other host, and founder of this game/competition is none other than The Grandmaster of Friendly Administration, Fin.

Info
The Guidelines

The game starts when we reach the 12 volunteers.
You may join by posting your desire to do so in the current thread.
If you participated in the last iteration you must repost in the running thread, posting on a thread that has undergone will not count.
You will be assigned a fellow volunteer to draw for through a PM by your respective host.
You have 7 days (168 hours from the moment a host posts that all PM's have been sent) to draw it.
You may draw in any style you wish.
The idea is to draw something related to your assigned playgrounder.
Any format is welcomed, from avatar to a giant watercolor image.
When you are finished you PM it to your assigned host.
Don't post the image here.

Extensions are permissible if you PM a host asking for it and a reasonable extended time-frame.
We'd much rather have an extension than late turn ins.

Themes
They are announced in the thread after the start of the competition.
They are sent again through a PM along with your assignment.
They are selected by both of your hosts, but suggestions are accepted.
They are entirely optional

The Workings

There are two phases.
On the "First Phase" you are assigned a fellow volunteer to draw.
The second phase is entirely optional.
On the "Second Phase" a host reveals all the images.
You may guess on who draw it and by whom it was drawn.
After two days such information will be revealed.

The Wishlist

You can only enter The Wishlist if you didn't participate in the previous round and the contest already has started.
If you enter the Wishlist you are automatically included on the next round.

(Okay I can believe it fills fast but not that fast. You should think of editing the first post when you copy paste it)

anyway, Hi. IN and all that.

Unless, unless, it turns out by the end of the recruitement that someon ewho has never been in before/hasn't been in in a long time wants to and miss it by a little, then I'll be willing to give them my place on this round in exchange for a place on the wishlist.

(ah yes and i'm goign to ask now. I have been meaning to do that "DWF" galery post that zephyr had started but didn't finish a while ago.

That said before
I'd like to ask the permission of the people: Are you okay with your creations/the thing that were made for you to be posted in a thread ?
Idealy they would eventualy be rehosted on a special galery to avoid bandwith problems.)

Okay, I have about an extra hour or two of extra free time. Divided among 12 people, that's about ten minutes on each person's homework. That would get me through writing my name and the date.

How's that sound?

I sort of wish that there would be room for more than 12 participants again. <___<

Hey, put me on the wishlist I suppose. Then I wouldn't have those homework gawkers climbing up my back. :smalltongue:

I'd like to apologize deeply for the number of grave delays. An issue has sprung up due tome being bad at arithmetic, mainly that I miscounted and overcounted by one, leaving one empty spot which I accidentally closed in the process. I noticed this error when randomizing the list, and as I was about to send the PMs noticed the problem. It took me a day to get around a solution. As of now, due to this slight issue there might be a slight delay. Thanks for your patience.

I'm sorry for making a counting error, and from now on, I'll take measures to prevent a repetition of this mishap, one you can already notice in the first post.

Do not panic, DYF is and will remain alive, think of this as a short delay.

Also, I'm considering bumping the number by two for the next round by virtue of getting this thing systematized to new levels and it not being that much of a load since I've gotten the hang of the fastest way to most things.

Finally, I consent to anything done by me for this thread to be placed at the gallery (though it was pretty much implicit) which I wholeheartedly approve of.

I wish there was more discussion going on instead of just "I want to participate", "Wow, the participant list filled up really quickly this time" or "I'm finished with my piece."

Although, it would really seem like there isn't too much to talk about instead of meta things like these.

Thoughts? :smallconfused:

Elder Tsofu
2011-09-15, 12:43 PM
You're right that there aren't that much to talk about after you get the categories and lock yourself into the closet with your computer, two sets of batteries bound together with duct-tape, several packages of instant-noodles and 6 litres of Coca-cola.

Maybe we could be nostalgic about earlier competitions incarnations of the thread. List favourites and such.

It would be fun to send in a silhouette image (where appropriate) with the entry to araveugnitsuga who could then post that one directly for the rest to discuss about.
Silhouettes are really nice a lot of the times, quite mysterious and beautiful in their own way without being too alike to the original avatar.

Zefir

Qaera

I'm reading Hamlet right now, actually. My main thought so far is that it's slightly better than Anna Karenina.

Elder Tsofu
2011-09-16, 10:40 AM
Don't dare call university reading material literature, unless you're taking an literature course. But preferably not even then!
Reading literature is a joyful thing, being force-fed specialist literature (which tend to be so dry that a few would be enough to dry up lake Michigan) is not. :smalltongue:

Mr_Saturn

I had a lot of trouble with this theme.
I don't know very much literature, so it was difficult to draw.

Akrim.elf
2011-09-16, 01:11 PM
Why?
do not know a lot of books ...
just those few who were a model for film
or film, which wrote the book

so ... Discworld, Hobits, Rambo, romance type Daniele Steel (bleah), etc. .. certainly such films find many books by
and some are quite well known
and I almost forgot to classics like The Three Musketeers, The Count of Monte Cristo ...

or fairy Tales - Sleapy Beauty, Little Mermaird... and more more another :)

Thanks! I know the title kinda gives it away, but did you guess the reference?

My inspiration for marcielle was the closeness of his name to Marseille, France. And the only french literature I'm familiar is the Phantom of the Opera. I decided to put the planet Mars in the background and some open books to top off the literature theme.

Kind of thrown together, yes.

I instantly thought of Pippi Longstocking, during the tv-series she sings the tune "fifteen men on a dead man's chest" (but in swedish) on the way home from a posh grown-ups party.

Probably was the bottle of rum that made me make that connection.

Uhm...yes, right song, but the original reference is from Robert Louis Stevenson's novel "Treasure Island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treasure_Island)".

Your avatar is cast as Long John Silver (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_John_Silver), complete with wood leg and parrot. You had a pirate avatar at the beginning of this DYF, so Stevenson's novel was the first thing that popped into my mind - and I associate you with the "ape" avatar, probably because it was the one you had when I joined the forum. :smallwink:

Yeah, I knew I had the reference wrong and that it was most probably a reference of Treasure Isle. An obscure reference to a Swedish children's book seemed a bit far-fetched. :smalltongue:
But I have to admit that I've never read that iconic book. -.-

I'm afraid my gift for Kasanip was all a bit last minute. Most of the things there have some vague "literary" allusions though, the most obvious things being the yellow brick road she's walking down and the tree near the forefront was meant to have cherries on one tier of branches and pineapples on another as an allusion to the Faraway Tree (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Faraway_Tree) which I seem to recall having done something along those lines at somepoint... most of the other stuff is very vague indeed.

I was going to do something to with some of Kasanip's characters and a printing press but I seem to struggle with geometric designs...

I thought and thought and thought and finally came up with Le Morte d'Arthur (after all, it's literature right?) as a possibility and from there drew Queen Guinevere dressed in pink. I also searched for medieval artwork of her and in some of the pictures she was dressed in pink, so I found the best one and drew it. And Guinevere is an alternate spelling for my nickname of Gwenyvere. :smalltongue: Literature was a hard one for me.

As for mine...Calvin and Hobbes and as I posted above, I absolutely love it to death, so all thanks to Elder Tsofu for the cutest avatar ever.
