View Full Version : Music for a final chapter in a campaign

Guy, Ariel, Tomer and Alon- don't read any further!

Edit: i created sample playlists instead of the individual songs. various suggested songs by the forumists included. please read the post, and scroll down to my post starting with "continued here"

anyone reading my campaign log, there are some spoilers here, but help is appreciated. i'll put that stuff in spoilers.
the final chapter of the campaign is coming close, and i want fitting music. something inspiring, Epic, memorable.if there is already a thread like this, please direct me, i found only Welknir's excellent thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=210048&page=2), but i want more.

The songs need to not have easily understood lyrics (i prefer just music if possible). and NOT from Lord of The Rings! (or other highly known movies/ bands) :smallamused:

to be more specific (i know i'm getting into quite specific details. this is my aspiration and intent, i'm more than ready to hear other ideas):

- Opening preparatory theme- getting close to the destination, realizing that the end game is near.

I need a hero- a bit cliche, but gets the blood pumping. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m8ltkjO7Pg&feature=fvst)

-Sly guy
music for a sly, yet bestial character, a bastard. not a fighting scene.

Ipiks' parley, Leon's soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/user/kolkorran#grid/user/8951A8B005AF9C36)
Ipiks' parley, Mello's theme (http://www.youtube.com/user/kolkorran#grid/user/AE7B0EE41A3378E4)

- tough battle with friends
the party must face two enemies that were once friends. a dragon and an undead cleric if that helps. it takes place in a throne room.

a bit grim, a bit sad, a bit religious overtones. (http://www.youtube.com/user/kolkorran#grid/user/EB2B42E88553E55A)includes Our Solemn hour (within temptation), Exorcist, some music mix and night of the wolf (nox arcana). still too short, i need about 10 more minutes at least. more is better.

- general hellish/ "getting in deep/ no turning back now" kind of music.

Death note (5 min) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcwQoOsQQJ8) (thanks to Zejety!)

- a confused fight: the party faces opponents that are hard to fight, very unique, very custom. looking for a good fight music, but with confusion or uncertainty tones.
the PCs face perverted representations of themselves. sort of "evil twins" thing.

Shadow of The Colossus (10:14) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O177fuJVSFo&feature=related) (thanks to supermonkeyjoe!)
Dancing mad, final fantasy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbXVNKtmWnc) (thanks to DoctorGlock!) need more here. about 10 more minutes?

the last part:
is probably the hardest- the big battle has 3 parts, and i'd like a music to each part.
- the first is a fairly standard "epic battle" music. fast paced.
- the second should also have a slightly darker theme to it, as if things are turning bad, but still epic, if possible- topping the previous one. slow paced.
- the last one should be a full out blown epic music, Latin in the background would be great. it need to be moderately paced. if it can convey the "on the brink of destruction" kind of feel it would be great! it should be the most impressive piece obviously.

1st part play list. (http://www.youtube.com/user/kolkorran#grid/user/EE4EA1159835732D) includes Battle from Hell mix, Immediate battle music mix and some other mix. this one is Done.
2nd part, a bit more grim. (http://www.youtube.com/user/kolkorran#grid/user/EEC33B24F6F7A7F5) includes nox arcana (essence of evil), E.S posthumus (pompei), within temptation (the truth beneath the rose) and Nightwish (crimson tide and Deep Blue). i still need 10-15 minutes.
3rd the Epic inspiring playlist. (http://www.youtube.com/user/kolkorran#grid/user/28C0D9F897841003) includes To Glory, United we stand, Magika, heart of courage, and strength of a thousand men, Archangel The last stand (most from Two steps of hell). quite good, but way too short. i need at least 15 more minutes of similar inspiring music, though some changes can be good.

- victory music, all is well (can be shorter now)
awe inspiring (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FD-fqlm5XrI)
Ragnarok online (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LtA9pzDbo4&feature=channel_video_title) (thanks to Radar!)
we are the champions (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04854XqcfCY&ob=av3n)
-------------------------------------------------------
so... thoughts? suggestions? ideas?

i suck at this. :smalltongue:

Part two:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVJBLjGK4JI darker, but might not match, or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ro0R_MxwwRs
Part Three:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7MRmEQiLnI or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4h1wciz45o

- tough battle with friends

i used a similar encounter, this was the music i chose
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZHRAxfE7Ho&feature=fvst
though it was a bit more suited due to the circumstances
considering the nature of the friends, try this

The shadow of the colossus soundtrack is AMAZING for epic battles, each of the colossus' tracks sound somewhat similar but have their own unique character;

Just compare http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DggH6CReCNA&feature=related

to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_F-vB9RudQs&feature=related

there are about a dozen of these epic tracks along with a bunch of more mellow background type music on the soundtrack.

thanks for the replies folks:

a general word- i prefer songs with little speaking, as my players will then focus trying to understand. if there is speaking, then either repetitive or not well understood is best.

@ DoctorGlock: many suggestions! thanks. i added the first song to my list (together we stand) as you suggested and Our Solemn Hour i think would be Perfect for the atmosphere of the "fight with friends" really.

the rest didn't quite work, perhaps i'm being picky. sorry

@ supermonkeyjoe: most songs of Shadow of the colossus are too slow paced for the battles i had in mind, and often too short. but they are great! i searched a bit, and found a song i included in the "confused fight" section.

@ LansXero: though i appreciate your help, the song has too much speaking for our tastes. sorry.

thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming!

I'll admit that metal isn't always right for everything, but I have found the faster stuff by within temptation to work for boss fight (though maybe I just overuse fallen angels)

Specific stuff from them that work (excluding the previous) are
Forsaken
Truth beneath the rose
Stand your Ground

Anything filed under "Greatest Battle Music of all Times" is a good place as well
My top picks (excluding the previous)
Theme of Erza
God Bound by Rules
Musubareru Sekai
Mezame (takes a while to pick up, but when it does...)

Alot of stuff by Yuki Kaijura, especially for the .hack games
Location of Power (.hack GU)
She (.hack GU)
Skeith battle music (don't know if it had a title)
Song of Storm and Fire

Some of the Black Mages stuff is good, but since it's just final fantasy mixup avoid it if your players have played the game, if not...
Dancing Mad, 12 minutes of pure awesome, probably good for the confusion battle

Some recommendations, I listed them in my bookmarks for future use.

The Unsung War (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u4YLIacGZo&feature=related) - Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War
Agnus Dei ~Megalith~ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZ6ABV_Q9qU): Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies
Chandelier / To All Things (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEuAflISyg8) - Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
Zero (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wiskH1UE4c&feature=related) - Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War
Nightmare Fiction (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7Ph1T7n6vM) - BlazBlue: Continuum Shift
Sword of Doom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoAPVJ1BUAY&feature=related) - Blazblue: Continuum Shift

I could list more, but I would need to listen to my collection and frankly, my internet is a bit slow at the moment.

1. Approach:
- Commando (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4KKnfu-CIY&feature=related) soundtrack hits the right tone IMO (this particular track is over 8 minutes long).

2. Sly guy:
- Muse Take a Bow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQXit0vly2I) (4:36)
- Village of The Doomed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MhlrKheSC0&feature=related) from American McGee's Alice

3. Old friends:
- Battle theme from Robin of Sherwood is sadly very short (1:25), but could be used for beginning of the encounter.

4. General hellish theme:
- Soul Reaver (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZnKMYdt40Q&feature=related) theme (7:21). Might be used for a battle instead.
- T'Rang (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sa3UMq8UioQ&feature=related) theme from Wizardry 8 is too short (1:36), but it is made to be looped anyway.

5. Dangerous + confused:
- Murder (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xho9thsoUo) from Berserk OST

6. Final Battle
a) Part 1
- Through The Fire And Flames (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjufc7GMrCs) by Vitamin String Quartet (7:20)
b) Part 2
- Vangelis Mythodea (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQw0UWi1BGw&feature=related) is unusualy dark (second Movement is 5:41).
c) Part 3
- Conan The Barbarian soundtrack - namely Riders of Doom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0o9yLcJqOw8) and/or Battle of The Mounds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bh63oQKdus).

Oh, let me try!

Sly but brutal guy:
Yoshihisa Hirano, Hideki Taniuchi, Kinchou (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gm4dF7X2TbE)
It's only 3:50 long, though.

Hellish theme, might also be suitable for the final part of the combat (Latin in there):
Yoshihisa Hirano, Hideki Taniuchi, Death Note Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcwQoOsQQJ8)
Unfortunately, way to short...

2nd part of the final battle:
Manami Kiyota, Bionis' Awakening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uKd8riQbqo)
Only 3:50 again...

Victory:
Something pieceful:
Koh Otani, The Sunlit Earth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9o4fW02DYI)

Something more epilogue-ish
Blind Guardian, Skalds and Shadows (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3_S1Q40HZo)

Sorry for suggesting all those short songs. Maybe you'll find something suitable anyway.

There is lots of nice stuff by Nox Arcana. Essence of Evil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KnFgd2pF5Y&feature=related) might be suitable for a battle against fiends.

Don't have links right now, but just look them up on youtube. Confused figth themes, Kinslayer, Planet Hell, 10th man down, all by Nightwish.

Epic battle music. Dulcissma, Titenka or Curritur by Corvus Corax

Absolutely anything Manowar did.

Sly guy music, possibly Robber Baron by Voltaire?

Just loop this, over and over....
Heart of Courage, extended. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYKUeZQbMF0&feature=related)

More good stuff from Two Steps From Hell includes To Glory (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZ1GbBlS9wM&feature=related), Protectors of the Earth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASj81daun5Q&feature=related), United we stand, divided we fall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6O6Q1OiF6LI&feature=related), Strength of a thousand men (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqglmfCG5cA&feature=related), After the fall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSH-_ScN6G0&feature=related), Fire nation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXRjg_QWN-Q&feature=related) and Never forget (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Lsb8Week94&feature=related).

[QUOTE=Kol Korran;12027601]NOT from Lord of The Rings! :smallamused:QUOTE]

That shouldn't be a problem. The Lord of the Rings are books. They don't have any audio.:smallwink:

Seriously, why not? The films have some of the best fantasy music out there.

You could also check out some of the music from the Final Fantasy games. I know One Winged Angel is pretty climatic.

wow! a lot of responses!

@ DoctorGlock: i've added truth beneath a rose and dancing mad. thanks!

@ Altarus: Sorry i'm being picky, but though i liked the tracks, they didn't quite fit to what i have in mind. thanks though! either a bit too mellow, or suddenly going very sort of techno (the last two) perhaps for another situation.

@ Radar: the party is not approaching commando style, looking more for "before the great battle/ last mission" kind of music.

didn't quite get your choices for the sly guy. sorry...

the rest didn't quite fit with what i had in mind. sorry, being picky.

@ Zejety:
the Death note is very suiting to that part. it doesn't need to be long, just hit the right feel, which it does. added to my list! (it goes silent in the middle though)

of the rest i liked the Blind Guardian song... till they sang. i prefer not intelligible speak at most at the game. but thanks!

@ Calmar: added your song, for the second part of the big fight... i've checked a few more nox arcana songs, but not seriously. will do when i have more time.

@ NikitaDarkstar:sorry, but most won't fit. some have too much speech (these may distract the players) and the rest are just not what i'm aiming for. thanks for the input!

@ drakir_nosslin: allready added "to glory", great song! united we stand was suggested before by DoctorGloack and added as well. heart of courage i think will dirve them crazy with it's looping, and the rest are too shot i'm afraid- i'll be getting up every 2 minutes. but they are good tracks, thanks!

@ Dr.Epic: at least two of my players are big fans, and have watched the movies extensively, and will recognize the themes immediately. which will lead to distraction, talks of the movies, and possibly comparisons between the movies epic scenes and this campaign's. i want to keep them on the game.

so i'm avoiding too well known songs (for my group).

They have made music inspired by themes such as Lovecraft, vampires, faerie tales, and others, but I think their style is different to what you seem to prefer so far.

Maybe E.S. Posthumus is useful for you, however. Unstoppable (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoaUYcwEpSw) (03:08) and Pompeii (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GusLypfx7OQ) (03:41) are quite fast and heavy (although possibly too short).

You know that you can create playlists on youtube right? Just name one 'The big fight' or whatever, throw in the songs you like and just play when the moment comes. That way you can have several similarly themed songs when it's appropriate, without having to change the music more than once per scene.

Fair enough, well various games and movie soundtracks might be your best bet for epic feel but no distracting lyrics. As always I'll suggest browsing through Midnight Syndicate's music to see if something strikes your fancy. (Their D&D soundtrack is quite good actually.)

Your players are really that easily distracted? In that case, you run the chance of them getting sidetracked and talking about the music regardless of where it's from.

The LotR soundtrack is tightly associated with the movies and therefore laden with associations. It's as if you'd try to use The Imperial March as the theme for your villain and hoped they would not immediately compare him and everything he does to Darth Vader.
No one I played with, including myself, would not be distracted distracted by a theme associated with some famous story or characters.

@ Calmar: nice suggestions. but for some reason not clicking into place.

by the way, weren't you the author of the "Light, Shadow, stone and trees" campaign log? i don't recall it coming to an ending. i'll look for it again.

@ Exterminatus: sorry, but the Red Orchestra's music is too mellow, and not enough "epic fantasy" to most of my uses. it's good music, just not fitting this campaign and group. (should be an interesting game too. i've read a lot about Stalingrad, one hell of a siege)

@ Dr. Epic: Calmar made mostof my points. i tried music for the first time a few sessions ago, and included a song from the Starcontrol 2 game, music of the Utwig race. the game was about 15 years ago, but one player got distracted, the music sounding familiar. once he realized where it was from, he told another player who recognized it, and they started swapping jokes and tales of the game for a few minutes.

i prefer that doesn't happen in the last stretches of the game, at least not in major fights. there is always a risk that a player will know a song i thought they won't, but i'm willing to take it. it doesn't mean i'm not going to try and avoid the more obvious ones.

No, I'm sorry, that was Colmarr, not me. However, up to this moment I had never heard of neither the man, nor his log before.

Then... how about Requiem of a Dream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFnsv_N2xbE)?
Unfortunately this track has the drawback to be so epic that, according to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Requiem_for_a_Dream#Soundtrack), it has become something like the default music for epic movies.

can't believe i forgot this one
Fairyland's Score to a New Beginning, the entire album is amazing, but specific picks would include

many of them start slow but lead into unmitigated epic, if not battle music then as theme music

i made a few playlists (edited the first post) though i'm still lacking music for some (as well as a few areas that have only one theme or not at all). it might give a better idea of what i'm looking for.

Ok, here's a few more, though I have a hard time finding something that might fit now, most of what I think would be good has already been suggested. Also, I try to avoid lyrics in my gaming songs, but that might just be me...

Crimson tide, deep blue sea. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gb4QLMfOJTg&list=PLDA45EA2ABE806381&index=25)

Mars, the bringer of war. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0bcRCCg01I)

I'm trying really hard to find some 'sly guy' music. In what kind of environment will they meet this guy?

Kol Korran
2011-10-21, 09:01 PM
thanks for the effort! the sly guy is a former PC- a duskblade lizardfolkf who was extremely violent, somewhat animalistic, brutal, but also shifty and stealthy.

a total bastard (VERY much like Belkar)- as the player changed characters, he turned to the enemy, and since then even fought the party.

this time he's going to parley with the party, for information, and letting him go (they can wipe the floor with him with their powers combined).

they will be meeting him in a mostly abandoned palace, that has recently seen a big battle (there will be smear of blood and so on). however, everything about this guy mocks the setting and it's "royal" atmosphere.

i've asked the player for the character's theme song (since my efforts proved fruitless as well), but he's a bit busy and hasn't responded so far.

i can't play the music where i'm at the moment, but i'll check your suggestions sometime later today.

How about more Shadow of the Colossus after that Shadow of the Colossus song?

Counterattack (extended) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmaW1S60JMo)

And while we are suggesting SotC music, Demise of the Ritual (extended) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWXKI8jRr50&feature=related).
I have no idea what to use it for (I'm afraid it has too much sad and too few battle for the sad battle) but I think you should be made aware of it. :smalltongue:

As for the sly character:
Mello's Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhMpW31ksD4) (from Death Note) might go overboard for a parley scene, but the different parts of the songs to a great job at showing the character's sly and brutal parts.
I'm unsure whether it fits the fantasy setting, though.

Maybe with examples already given, I'll be able to focus on fitting music. I'm not sure, where to put it, but Therion could be a good band to look into (they do symphonic metal): 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiSd6XmD8Mk), 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTm-BrB56Es&feature=related), 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCez-H8KUx8&feature=related).

This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnkWvh1pvU8) could be used for the approach part, but might not fit well with other choices.

Victory music propositions: 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c51xQc03W6Y&feature=related) (full, happy victory), 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LtA9pzDbo4&feature=related) (they won, but sacrificed something/someone important)

This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lE9X3RgdVjs&feature=related) is a good battle music (almost 10 minutes long) - it's written by Yoko Kanno for GiTS Innocence. There are also overly dramatic pieces from Vision of Escaflowne, but the style is vastly different: 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_49H_N43jQ), 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oeQflY-DzE), 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNh5J-hirg0&feature=related).

Distracted for like a second when they realize where the music is from. They might make a comment, but then would just go right to playing. Ignoring the like few seconds of everyone commenting on it, you'd have some great music to really set the tone.

@ drakir_nosslin: The Crimson tide song added to the second part of the Last fight. i think it's a nice uplifiting part ins a somewhat depressive situation.

@ Zejety: the Shadow of the Colossus song i chose is especially wierd and slightly disturbed sounding (at least to my mind), and is supposed to be used in the confused fight (for which i need mroe songs).

unfortunately, though the Shadow of The colossus music sounds amazing, it does not fit any of my themes nicely (i'm overly picky, i know)- they aren't fast enough for most battles, or sad/ dark but pacy enough for the two battles that requires it (the fight with friends and the second part of the big battle)

thanks though.

the Mello link you posted did not fit- it was too... nice, well behaved. however, i found this theme of Mello (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_q6vIHzqKg&feature=related) which might be better, a bit mroe edgy.

i actually started a new playlist for the sly guy (called Ipiks) which is in the first post, and takes quite a different route from this theme. but i've opened a new list (with only this theme) for a different approach)

nice catch! :smallwink:

@ Radar: i've taken the Victory music of online Ragnarok (as they will most likely will lose somethings on the way. they allready have. the robin hood and other victory music won't fit. sorry.

i'm using Dance of Curse for another session's soundtrack, (it's a good track), so this one will have to sit out.
-----------------------------------------------
To all:
thanks for the help, more than i had hoped for, and the lists are coming up nicely!

new additions:
- 2 lists for the sly guy. one using the Leon's soundtrack, and another with a single track of Mello's theme from death note
- added to the fight with friends 2 songs (nox arcana's night of the wolf and some music mix)
- added Crimson tide and Deep blue (night wish) to the second part of the last fight.
- added a victory song from ragnarok online

Did you drop dancing mad for confused fight? It fits your time request and I think you originally had it in there. I'm about out of ideas now though.
