I am relativley new to DnD, but know enough to play a game. My friend (whose dad is a long time DnD...er) tells me about these specific trained skills (I do not know the proper term, used like Knowledge:[certain subject]). He gave me an example: One of his Dad's characters was trained in tatoo artistry, and made gold doing that in towns before going on adventures. I don't see anything in the PHB, and was wondering if anyone could give me a clue as to what this is.

That would be a profession:[certain field] skill if I'm not mistaken.

Edit: Oops, didn't notice this was in the 4E section.

Those are mostly in 3E and have been gotten rid of for 4E and replaced with a +2 from a background to a certain skill.

Just repeating, since you're new: 4e only came out in 2008. There's still a strong 3e fanbase (technically 3.5, but that's a stupid name), and even several folks who prefer earlier editions.

Different editions have different rules, so don't be surprised if some old timer's D&D works differently from the one you're used to.
