Behind on thread progress. Will catch up when there's time.

Time enough to post this though: Dr. Adorable (http://ask-dr-adorable.tumblr.com/)

Will be following with every fiber of my being!

Dude, someone kicked your cat or something? :smallconfused:

I'm leaving this alone because I was asked too.

However, please be aware that asking this type of question is insulting.

Also, just because you don't understand what's going on doesn't mean I don't have a good reason for saying or not saying something.

In the future, a PM would be a better means of communication.

You've all seen this before, I merely leave it here in the hopes of
A) defusing any tensions, and
B) getting it out of my head, or at least sharing the glory.

I used to think that was the pinkiest PMV possible, until I found an even pinkier one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKpt5Z2-jvA)
But the pinkiest original song I've found that doesn't use any clips or voice samples from the show would be the SUGAR RUSH MIX (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDPjNM6AYl0)
Pinky is totally an adjective now

Muppets target audience:
Everyone who likes the Muppets. Or comedy, if they were deprived of the Muppets. Maybe even Statler and Waldorf.

Twilight target audience:
Sparkly-vampire-loving girls. Count double because they drag along their boyfriends.
Brace yourself to feel old: The muppets have been off the air and out of the pop culture collective unconscious for about a decade. Most of the people who'd be going to see Twilight have probably never heard of them

It's a bit before my time. I've never seen an episode or any of the movies.

Wugh, was feeling a bit down yesterday, y'know one of those moods where you feel like shunning human/pony contact for a while?

I ended up playing some games with some friends, and felt a little better in the end, but must have still been a bit under because I had a night of restless sleeping and nightmares (not scary ones, but the kind of ones that depress you with life-affecting things; eg. your boss being replaced with someone you really hate etc)

Anyway, in amongst all the flickering visions of running around fixing things, having to deal with stress from said manager and the like ... I remember one brief scene.

Lix.

I have never seen her before, I still can't remember what she looked like in my dream, and I still don't know how I knew it was her ... BUT I KNEW!

Anyway, she was only there for a brief moment ... she turned me into a toy Tonka Truck and gave me a hug.

I kinda feel a bit better now ...

But I still gotta ask ... LIXIE, WHAT THE HAY WERE YOU DOING IN MY HEAD?!?!

Pony thread has slowed to a crawl, hasn't it? One page per night now, when it used to be two or three... There are times when I hate to be proven right - even partially...

I'm still here! I just have to be up and out for work early and back late this week, so minimal pony for me :smallfrown:

That said, guess what has just started showing on Cartoon Network down here early in the morning? Only up to Ticket Master though, so plenty of catching up to do.

One advert, however, has a horrible G3.5 flash pinkie pie advertising a plushie ... it really hurts to see that while waiting for the show to come back.

Actually, if I had anything that resembled either time or creative talent, I would try to make Statler and Waldorf heckle My Little Pony. It would be glorious. Someone please make this happen http://i.imgur.com/EvxT1.png

I am a huge fan of Statler and Waldorf, and riffing in general. I was raised on a steady diet of MST3K. I would LOVE to do a riff of some pony episodes. Anyone else interested?

I don't understand the technical side of such things, but I'm sure I could learn.

Which makes the plotline of the movie (as far as I understand it) hilariously accurate. Also I don't feel old but instead marvel on how short a decade is or rather how much happens.

On another note I have too many pony tabs going. Far too many. Mostly because they are all fics I'm reading through at the same time or this thread. (Sometimes thats the same thing.)

Anyways have some pony art

I had a dream about ponies last night. That shouldn't be surprising, I had been doing a pony episode marathon for several hours before going to sleep. What was surprising was that I was a pony. And all of the mane cast was there. And we were in Ponyville, and it was in cartoon. And everybody from the ponythread was there in ponyform. In fact, I dreamed of ponies all last night. I woke up a few times, so I know I had a few distinct ones. I don't remember much about them, I had completely forgotten until reading this post, but yeah. Kinda cool actually.

Should have seen that coming. I'll try to remember, but like I said, I had completely forgotten about it until now. Some of the details are rather sketchy.

...out of curiosity, what form I had? :P

Blue, but the color of the G&PT's hair. The mane was a darker blue or purple. You definitely had a horn, you might have been an alicorn though.

What did I look like?

Orange earth pony, yellow (maybe green?) hair, cherry or some other type of fruit cutie mark.

Wow, I'm a little impressed I remembered both of those.

When I first saw that, I thought, woah! The Dorfs and ponies are going to meet up and it's going to be exactly how I imagined it! But it wasn't. Still, it's a pretty interesting fic.

Statler and Waldorf are best ponies. Or should be best ponies. And that sounds fun, but I'm too self conscious to do anything like that.

In which Kindablue kinda commits murder.
Seriously. This is much easier than you're all making it out to be. Even on the soulless, toneless Internet, this is easy. He gave a list of three things. "An depression," "a thyroid dysfunction," and realizing that "nothing matters anyway" (all in a single, long, I'd say kind of beautiful polysyndetic sentence). Two of those are legitimate medical disorders that could be used in a serious argument to refute what you were saying, as you just admitted. The third was cribbed from my middle school diary. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WhuikFY1Pg)

Rarity approves of this and any future killing sprees.http://i.imgur.com/6ZURl.png

Apologies; I study philosophy. I've spent long enough arguing that for real that I forget irony.

You know, today I wondered if several ancient philosophers were just early trolls who liked to annoy people.

I'll back up what Thanqol said here. Nihilism (defined in this sense) isn't even tenable from within nihilism. That's what Camus was all about. If you have any doubts, read something like the Myth of Sisyphus or The Rebel. He trashes it from within.

Does it? Nihilism says there's not objective moral, and I haven't seen a rebuttal of that. I don't count increased pheromone levels caused by evolutionary useful behaviour as objective measurement.

Medical and hormonal problems are outside my area of expertise, but I can contest nihilism. Nihilism is a weak-ass philosophy. If everything we do is predetermined, meaningless and brief then the only ideal left to us is sharing joy with each other. If the universe is cruel and impersonal, then the only thing that is human is us, and it falls upon us alone to show kindness and love to each other. If this is all there is, despair is a waste of the valuable, transient time you have available to you. May as well be happy. May as well make others happy. Just because a flame doesn't burn forever doesn't mean the flame can't be beautiful.

It#s not that easy. To quote Angel:

ANGEL: Not all of it. All I wanna do is help. I wanna help because I don't think people should suffer, as they do. Because, if there is no bigger meaning, then the smallest act of kindness is the greatest thing in the world.

The point is, if the smallest act of kindness is the greatest, what does this make the greatest act of kindness? If it's also the greatest act of kindness, it would mean any amount of effort or effect will always lead to the same result.

by the way: I don't go around and quote Nietzsche all day. I like the increases of happy hormones in my blood stream when I act evolutionary useful.

Interestingly enough, there was a penguin there. It wasn't you though. You were a dark gray pegasus with blue hair. The cutie mark was a sceptre.

Does it? Nihilism says there's not objective moral, and I haven't seen a rebuttal of that. I don't count increased pheromone levels caused by evolutionary useful behaviour as objective measurement.
Just curious, have you read the Myth of Sisyphus? The whole point is that there is no meaning to life (or if there is, it's impossible for humans to know), but yet everyone tries to find a meaning in their life. The combination of the two is what is know as the absurd. He calls for "acceptance without resignation" of the absurd, and for a continual revolt against it.
Now wait for a person better versed in philosophy than me comes and demolishes that.

The only dream I can remember that was related to ponies in any way was just of me posting on ponythread. Completely mundane. All my dreams are either mundane stuff like that or random crazy nonsense. Like that time I got chased through Slidell, Louisiana by Professor Snape after stealing his scooter that he kept at the Juneau, Alaska airport for some reason. Or the one where the Walmart I once worked at was located inside my grandmother's house and my former coworkers glued gumballs all over my car that was parked out front. The gumballs were inexplicably chicken flavored.

On a less crazy subject I just saw this.

I had a pony dream last night too. I have no Idea what happened in it, But I remember waking up with the mental image of Twilight Sparkle In Gears of War armour with a lancer modified for pony use. Which is kinda odd, considering I haven't played a Gears of War game in months. I also remember Page 6000 of Homestuck being made out of Minecraft Blocks. It was 248 blocks high.

I once also had 6 pony dreams in the space of a week. It was pretty darn awesome.

I had a dream about ponies last night.
Le gasp! Me too!

...Though mine was relatively unsolicited. I'd have expected zombie apocalypse or Fallout related dreams last night, but ponies was relatively out of the blue. Except for the affirmation of the spread of pony throughout the university.

My dreams are generally pretty weird, though.
Something about a fashion related event in Ponyville, then the Mane 6 realizing they all had something really important they had to do (Spike bursts in with a message for Twilight), then a mysterious figure (a talking cockatrice, I think?) getting upset that they all had to leave. Cut to a first person view of Applejack running some errands, but as she was paying for whatever she was buying, she saw a hand.

Her hand. AJ had turned into a human. Cut back to third-person view, and AJ is in--a field?--looking for Twilight. She runs into Luna (I think?), who is visibly upset about something (she may have also been at the opening event). When asked, she says that something's wrong with Twilight. They run to her, and found that Twilight is writhing on the ground, with roughly her back half turned flesh-colored.

My memory of the dream (or at least, any memory that follows any kind of plotline) kinda stops there. The apparent plot from the part that I remember is that the figure from the opening scene cursed the Mane 6 (and possibly Luna), and they were turning into humans one by one. And no, they weren't naked. Or, at least, AJ was wearing a stylized cowgirl outfit, as I don't recall seeing the others in human form throughout the dream.

...Though mine was relatively unsolicited.

Aw man~

I had a dream about ponies last night. That shouldn't be surprising, I had been doing a pony episode marathon for several hours before going to sleep. What was surprising was that I was a pony. And all of the mane cast was there. And we were in Ponyville, and it was in cartoon. And everybody from the ponythread was there in ponyform. In fact, I dreamed of ponies all last night. I woke up a few times, so I know I had a few distinct ones. I don't remember much about them, I had completely forgotten until reading this post, but yeah. Kinda cool actually.

Have to say I'd be curious to know what I showed up as, if at all.

Because ultimately it's a joyful and uplifting story about how a show I like and a kind-hearted person brought joy and happiness into the life of someone who needed it more than most.

There were hundreds of bronies in there, people from here, people from real life. I highly doubt I missed anypony who has posted in the last two weeks or so (since I began lurking again). And fortunately, my sleep-addled brain had the foresight to write a dream journal in the middle of last night! I have absolutely nothing in there but descriptions of dozens ponies. All I remember from the dream event-wise is just a discussion. And a cuddle-pile, but that's no big surprise. And like I said before, most of ponies are based on avatars, so don't expect anything particularly insightful.

Out of curiosity, was I there?

You looked like a Rapidash pegasus.

Yay, that's pretty much how I imagine my pony self. I must know everything that happened in this dream, as well as what kind of pony I was and what my cutie mark was.

The great and powerful Nameless demands it! http://i.imgur.com/N2nfK.png

Don't remember the exact type, maybe a unicorn? The cutie mark was a scythe. Apparently my brain isn't terribly original.

I also feel the urge to ask whether I was in Gaelbert's dream, but that's not likely, so *shrug* ^^"

Same as your avatar, but the white streaks in the mane were candy pink.

Do you remember mine by any chance?

Dark blue earth pony with a pencil cutie mark. The mane was purple and blue.

Gaelbert, was I in your pony dream?

White unicorn, red hair. Your cutie mark was a knife, and you had some sort of scar on your head. It didn't seem as intimidating at the time.

I'm kinda curious if I was in it.

Doubt it though.

Hah, you doubt me? Dark blue pegasus, light pink hair. It was spiky and short, a little like Scootaloo. Don't remember the cutie mark though. Sorry about that. :smallfrown:
Still, I think I'm doing pretty good. It's not easy remembering dozens of ponies. The journal really saved me there.

Right, so, with new forum table code I had to cut 20% of the OP, while trying to maintain content...

Biggest new change: We switched from individual GitP work links to ED tags - this will not only guarantee new works will be in the OP the moment ED posts them, but shortened table (and amount of work it needs in each new thread) by 40%. Only non-ED links were retained. Authors, can you make sure your works are tagged properly by ED?

Especially Grif, whose ED Fic lacks author tag so was left in place for now :smalltongue:

By the way, I know we missed some of the new authors - can you guys post your author tags/non-ED works, too, so I can add them? ^^"

I am a huge fan of Statler and Waldorf, and riffing in general. I was raised on a steady diet of MST3K. I would LOVE to do a riff of some pony episodes. Anyone else interested?

I don't understand the technical side of such things, but I'm sure I could learn.

I volunteer my voice. I've got a half-decent mic and no shame.

Was I there? I mean, I don't really have a pony-persona, so. Did your mind make one up?

Or do I not count as a ponythread person.

You count as a ponythread person to my subconscious.

You know, today I wondered if several ancient philosophers were just early trolls who liked to annoy people.

If? I'm sorry, have you met Socrates?

Does it? Nihilism says there's not objective moral, and I haven't seen a rebuttal of that. I don't count increased pheromone levels caused by evolutionary useful behaviour as objective measurement.

I don't particularly believe that there's objective morality either. But just because something doesn't exist doesn't mean it shouldn't exist. Sure, there may be no true, universally applicable form of justice. But striving for that ideal has worth. I think that beauty is in the self, and that human beings can manifest beautiful things through the act of striving for beauty.

A photograph is not beautiful, what is beautiful is the photographer's desire to seek out and create that beauty. So 'fairness' is not an inherently beautiful concept but someone who strives, genuinely, for fairness is doing something amazing. The search for morality would seem to me to hold more worth than it's application. Hence why I'm a Virtue Theorist.

It#s not that easy. To quote Angel:

The point is, if the smallest act of kindness is the greatest, what does this make the greatest act of kindness? If it's also the greatest act of kindness, it would mean any amount of effort or effect will always lead to the same result.

Haha, well played. But I wouldn't argue that point. I don't think the consequences have as much worth as the motivations of the people behind them.

by the way: I don't go around and quote Nietzsche all day. I like the increases of happy hormones in my blood stream when I act evolutionary useful.

I do go around making decisions based on "who would the person I would like to have making this decision be?" My conscious mind may be a trick of evolution and my thoughts predetermined by momentum and physics - in fact, I don't particularly contest a number of nihilistic assertions. I just don't think that it changes anything even if it's true. Many folk use nihilism to justify inaction, which is primarily where my grievance with it lies.

TLDR: I don't need a higher purpose to be a good person.

Yeah, I'm up for it.

Okay, so I took a shot at writing a few post-episode lines as done by Statler and Waldorf. These are bad puns and it's a first run, so be warned before opening the spoiler.

At the end of the first episode
Statler: “I think I like Pinkie Pie Best”
Waldor: “Why’s that”
Statler: “Her first line is about the same as my reaction when I saw this video had more than 2 views.”
Both: “Dohoho”

At end of the second episode
Statler: “Well, that was uplifting”
Waldorf: “Yeah, it’s uplifting me right out of my seat.”
Both: “Dohoho”

At the end of Art of the Dress
Statler: “Hmm, you know, I think that episode was trying to say something about producers.”
Waldorf: “Yeah, that they’d look better in a Rainbow Dress with good intro music.”
Both: “Dohoho”

Alternate end of Art of the Dress
Statler: “You know, I think they should have cut out some of the lights during the fashion show, it was probably way too hot up there”
Waldorf: “So, you’re saying the stage should have been 20% cooler”
Both: “if you laughed at that, there is no hope for you.”

Luna’s entrance during the Halloween episode
Statler: “Well, that certainly was some entrance by Luna”
Waldorf: “Yeah, I think it would only be improved by her exit!”
Both: “Dohoho”

I had a dream about ponies last night. That shouldn't be surprising, I had been doing a pony episode marathon for several hours before going to sleep. What was surprising was that I was a pony. And all of the mane cast was there. And we were in Ponyville, and it was in cartoon. And everybody from the ponythread was there in ponyform. In fact, I dreamed of ponies all last night. I woke up a few times, so I know I had a few distinct ones. I don't remember much about them, I had completely forgotten until reading this post, but yeah. Kinda cool actually.

Okay, now I'm curious to know if I showed up in this dream? Especially as you said we were all mares...

I didn't, actually, until I saw the trailer. (Didn't know about Puss in Boots either, actually.) I think it's partly due the huge glut of movies this year, more than we've had in ages. (At one point, me and Mum were going to the cinema once a week; I think we went maybe three times last year or something by comparison.)

I am a huge fan of Statler and Waldorf, and riffing in general. I was raised on a steady diet of MST3K. I would LOVE to do a riff of some pony episodes. Anyone else interested?

I don't understand the technical side of such things, but I'm sure I could learn.

I also fully support this endeavor!

In the USA? Not a chance. Hasbro wants people to watch the Hub, not lure people to other channels. These deals only happen in countries where Hasbro doesn't have its own channel.

I do feel for you. I watched Season One in a YouTube window. Before Season Two we got Verizon Fios in the apartment complex and it was cheaper for better service, so we switched. Now I get the Hub in HD, and a HD DVR so I don't have to get up early. :smallcool: It's way more awesome then I expected it to be; I was pausing and rewinding constantly during Nightmare Night just to admire the costumes.

Nope, we have 31 (There were two 20th threads), plus a Draw thread.

There's a very good reason as to why we're taking over the forums. As you may or may not be aware, the Order of the Stick is very Troperific. As TvTropes put it: "The GitP forums are almost an unofficial troper forum".

My little Pony, Friendship is magic has also reached Critical Troper Mass. anyone who spends any amount of time on TvTropes.com will start to see the name pop up everywhere. Eventually, they will open up the My Little Pony page while in a wiki walk, and learn about the series. Since TvTropes also helps train people to see shows for what they are, it has a significantly higher conversion ratio than other methods of pony recruitment.

TL;DR: Don't get pessimistic friends hooked on My Little Pony. Get them Hooked on TvTropes and wait until they naturally check out the show.

Exalted. Manse = Giant magical death fortress with a tendency to explode in miles-large fireballs if someone messes with the feng shui. Essence Vents = A function that allows the manse to vent those fireballs in the forms of mile-high spires of burning magic, thus reducing the general collateral damage. Disappointment = Not sure that it's worth living in a doom fortress which couldn't explode at any minute.

If we're doing this, we should do a few things (not necessarily in this order):
A) Figure out the medium
B) Find out who wants to participate
C) Start a thread for it
D) Pick which episode(s) to do
E) Start watching lots of MST3K and other riffers, to get a feel for the art.

I really hope this takes off!

No. They're essentially magical radiation, which means that the town that lives outside the manse will eventually mutate into fishpeople/disembodied light/redheads, but it's not a viable weapon.

What is a viable weapon is the mile-long flamethrower you can build and attach to the top of your manse. A manse basically converts ley lines into magical death energy, like a power plant, which then you then use to fuel your insane weaponry.

Exalted: Supervillainy is mandatory.

Pretty much this. Here in Australia we have a number of free to air TV channels (about 16 or so, currently), plus a few "pay TV" providers - Foxtel being the most popular/prominant - that allow people to purchase a basic channel package, or certain types of programming packages, or a full channel subscription for varying fees.

The channels/providers will purchase broadcast rights for overseas produced programs from their original providers, which may be then later picked up or additional broadcast deals made by other channels - in this case, the broadcast rights to MLP:FiM in Australia have been purchased by Foxtel and they're showing it in their "Cartoon Network" channel. Personally, I'm hoping that ABC2 or ABC3 get broadcast rights from The Hub, because that will mean free to air *and* commercial free.

I usually do an inital watch in Youtube, but I've been downloading the webrips in 720p DivX (.avi) format to watch the show with my wife on our TV, because she refuses to watch TV on a computer monitor. When I eventually get a better TV, I'll have to download the episodes in 1080p.

... it's taken you this long to realise this? STALKER FAIL! :smalltongue:

Not that I'm stalking anypony from the ponythread... ¬_¬

To answer your question: Perth, Western Australia.

My e-stalking is generally poor regarding ponythread. I've been cutting back.

Ah, Western Australia; the great, inaccessible desert that we Easterners regard as a mining colony populated by undesirables.

I'm nothin' special...

Anyways, here's some proof (http://ckimagesperth.blogspot.com/2009/11/dean-and-mivhelle-29th-november-2009.html).

(And now you all know what we look like.)

Good gracious, that is classy.

I'm starting to think something along the lines of "Honey Buzz" or "Sweet Sting" or similar. Earth pony mare, with bright yellow and black striped mane & tail. Not sure about coat/eye colour, but cutie mark is definitely a beehive with a honey bee flying out of it.

One picture, comin' up!

I...actually don't know what my provider is. It's whoever the apartment has a deal with, but the bill is bundled in my rent, so I don't know the name, and I'm not sure I can change it.
Ah, yeah, I've been there before. You might be able to order extra services through the apartment management, but not necessarily (and that's assuming the Hub is available at all and it isn't too expensive to add the service that contains it). :smallfrown:

EDIT: Now I have an OC pony idea starting to form in my mind, who's special talent is bee-keeping, honey, and honey-related products (like mead, because I can *totally* see ponies drinking mead!)
Now... what to name this OC pony?

Topaz has a sister named Honey Buzz (I've mentioned her in a previous post to SiuiS) and you're certainly welcome to use the name if you like it.

EDIT: Apparently one of the blind bag ponies is named Bumblesweet (http://dimespin.deviantart.com/art/Bumblesweet-the-Beekeeper-256524473).

Oh, almost forgot: Obligatory "was I in your dream Gaelbert?" post.

Purple unicorn, green hair I think. If I recall correctly, think Spike's color scheme on a pony. No mustache though.

That sounds like an absolutely amazing dream. It even blows my Hitler Maria Theresa Thaler Chocolate Coin Treasure Hunt dream out the water. And that was my favourite dream of all time.

I've really got to start a dream journal one of these days, instead of of writing down just the funny dreams as they come along.

So, I guess it's time to ask if my avatar showed up in your dream in Pony Form.

Light green coat, and either white or very light hair. Don't remember the cutie mark, sorry.
The crazy thing is, I don't normally do a dream journal. I just happened to be brainstorming a ponyfic before I went to bed last night, so I had paper and pen next to my bed. When I woke up, I must have though there was something in there I would use for the ponyfic.

Okay, now I'm curious to know if I showed up in this dream? Especially as you said we were all mares...

*eyes avatar with it's neat manly stallionly beard, which is coincidentally not dissimilar to the guy behind the keyboard's*

Silver coat, dark gray mane. Cutie mark was some sort of machine part. For some reason, your username makes me think of robots and that bled over into my dream.

Ooh! Ooh! Was I there?

You were a zebra. The description I have written down is basically similar to Zecora, but with silver jewelry instead of gold. Don't know if you spoke in iambic pentameter though.

In other news, a while back I converted a brony. He's not too involved in the internet community, but he's seen all the shows and knows the lingo. Anyways, he knows how to rap and expressed interest in doing a MLP rap with yours truly laying down the sick beats, yo. So, that's what I've been doing recently and will continue to do until I feel comfortable with my electronic music composition again. I used to do a lot more, but right now I don't have much of my equipment and I'm completely out of practice (although even when I was in practice, my beats were pretty much BASS DRUM BASS DRUM BASS DRUM BASS DRUM KICK KICK KICK KICK KICK KICK BASS. I wasn't very subtle.)
So if anypony knows were I could find previously made samples and such of MLP, or just has any good resources in general, I'd appreciate it. It's been a while, and I'm rusty. Here's to hoping DJ-EntleColt and MC-SweaterHat* drop their first single soon.

Just remember that the "Western mining colony" practically owns the Eastern states. The only reason why we haven't seceded and then purchased the eastern states back is because the paperwork isn't worth the hassle. :smalltongue:

What, you mean visually? Like, a wave? I dunno how to depict a rising tide; that's by definition a slow movement. If you're talking metaphorically? That's really strange, I'm not entirely sure what talent that would result in, especially if we've ruled out water.

Holey moley, that's AWESOME!

I love the mane, and that expression... that's pretty much what I was thinking - a pony who is patient, calm, relaxed, and sedate when she's working with her bees and honey; the rest of the time she's flighty, impatient, easily irritated, and zipping all over the place.

I shall call her Honeysting.

And now, less doomsday and more ponies. I have a question involving an OC. Her cutie mark is a rising tide. I'm curious what the thread's interpretation of that is. She's a pegasus pony, so she does not control the sea.
Hmmm, a tide is representative of a border between land and sea. As it's rising, it's also symbolic of change. Have you ever heard the expression "a sea-change (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_change_(transformation))"?

What, you mean visually? Like, a wave? I dunno how to depict a rising tide; that's by definition a slow movement. If you're talking metaphorically? That's really strange, I'm not entirely sure what talent that would result in, especially if we've ruled out water.

In most parts of the world, a rising tide is slow movement. But in some places close to the equator it can go from "the ocean is a thin blue line on the distant horizon" to "I'm meters under water" in a matter of an hour or so. It's like a freaking tsunami twice a day.

Who is your TV provider?

It's actually quite sweet. It's what we got my college roommate for his 21st, because we liked the idea of drinking mugs of mead

Mead is one of those things that reaffirmed my faith in life being an incredible gift and a wondrous journey.

I remember watching Disney's Sleeping Beauty as a wee'n and watching the two blokes and a minstrel get drunk on champagne or wine or whatever. I remember thinking about that and imagining the taste, the texture.

And lo, 16 years later I buy mead on a lark, and there it is; that taste was real.
I still hold out hope of stepping foot on Irish soil and being flooded by a sense of home.

I'm able to wear this man's face though. Think his thoughts. I'm halfway there.

For a moment I saw "I'm able to wear a man's face" and my reaction was "Oh, you took Life 3, cool".

'Think his thoughts' was 'I thought Mind was the Inferior Arcanum for Thyrsus?'

What makes this show so good is that it has some of the best plots of any show on TV. I think that's what makes the adult male demographic enjoy it so much. In my opinion, Celestia has the best... no, sorry, I can't do this anymore. It's too much.

It's fine. I'm overwhelmed by plots on a regular basis. When this happens, I feel the need to take a lie down until I recover.

...now I'm worried things like that have been going on and have somehow passed my notice. If I have to review thirty threads to check, I shall be very cross.

I can assure you, rotten - though Lawful - bastard that I am, had such a thing cropped up on my watch, I'd have let you in, as they say, ten seconds flat...
While I don't have any particular objection to other people enjoying such fare - I don't judge - there are proper places for it, and those are not here.

Whips are supposed to discourage me, Thanqol?

Depends what they're made from, doesn't it? E.g. laser energy, electricity, blades, plasma, monofilament wire1...

It never rains but it pours, right? Got to take in Mum's mobility scooter 'cos it suddenly keeled over and died yesterday - and they're flying on to Tennerife next Tuesday...

1Okay, not that last one; despite being a common idea in some sci-fi, that is one weapon that always makes me skullpalm and point out that PHYSICS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY! It it's one molecule thick, then you can't swing it and even if you could there'd be no mass for it to work. And if it's stabilised/strengthened by a forcefield or something (like energy whips), why not, I dunno, just use the forcefield?

Well, one way it could work better is if you assume that a forcefield isn't something you can easily swing either. A monofilament whip, despite being a molecule thick, still has some sort of mass to it, and presumably creating a forcefield around a molecule-thick string of matter is easier than simply creating a free-floating forcefield of the same shape. Assuming some kind of physics limitations, forcefield-supported monowhips are actually decent.

Well, that was a trying trip. It'd have been nightmarish if Mum hadn't been with me navigating... Not only did every sodding traffic light stop me, but we nearly crunched into some woman who was trying to nose in waaay to close to the car in front and had to suddenly brake because she did. (I think we just touched - but not actually bumped - the bumpers.) I stalled it out about four times (though not, ironically, on the bloody awful hillstart). This sort of thing does not help my confidence... I really hate driving.

No, no it really doesn't have any appreicable mass. That's kind of my point.

Rant incoming.

Oh boy... *gets popcorn*

We're now talking atomic physics. Atoms are small. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly small they are. I mean, you may think it's a short space between Pinkie Pie's words, but that's just peanuts to atoms.

Fagpacket calculation:

A 2m whip, made of, for the purposes of arguement, lead (because it's a conveniently heavy atom with confirmed stats, and thus a good upper estimate for atomic size and weight) is 4950495050 atoms long (for the Van de Walls radius of 202 picometres.) The approximate volume of a lead atom is thus 0.00000000000000003452571789 cm³. As lead has a density of 11.34gcm-3, this gives an estimated mass per atom of of 3.9 x 10-16 grammes (i.e. 0.0000000000000039g). So your one-atom thick whip would weight about 0.00000017g. A seventeen millionth of a gram.

From a quick google search, the largest molecule know to science is about 10 nanometres across - but it's also a liquid, so it's density is likely to be different. (Unless, of course, you count a single piece of metal as a single molecule, and then it can, technically be as big as you like - but then you can molecularly build a sword and call it a monomolecular blade...)

Rough calc: lead has a molar enthalpy of vaporisation (i.e. how much energy it takes to not just melt, but evaporate, 11.34g of lead, or 6.0 x 1023 lead atoms) of 179.5kJ/mol-1. So, let's take a higher melting point metal, like, say platinum, which has 4695kJ/mol-1. So, using the same number of atoms (4950495050), it takes 479 x (4950495050/6.0 x 1023) 3.9 picojoules or 0.0000000000039 kJ (or 0.0000000039 J) to vaporise your 2m one-atom-wide whip.

Which is suspect you'll find, is rather less than you'd apply to it, trying to swing it... (You know the sound of a whip cracking is the tip breaking the sound barrier, right?)

(Now, granted, I'm a necromancer with an engineering background, not a molecular chemist, so thse numbers are not going to be accurate - but they will be roughly in the right handful or orders of magnitude (which is close enough, given how very, very small we are looking at.))

Long story short, monomolecular weapons are bullcrap (and monofiliment is not much of an improvement) the way people think they should work. They are either so thin they couldn't possibly apply any force, or they are basically thin wire, which does't bend well; have you tried whipping someone with wire? Doesn't work so well does it? No. (Decapitating a motorcycle rider with a taut wire and whipping someone are two entirely different things.) And, course, whips not made of metal need to be fairly hefty to do anything significant. Cutting things, does actually require the application of energy, the other fact that escapes many of these sci-fi writers (the tales of katanas so sharp they cut a feather dropped on them are apocryphal - well at least not without magical enhancement). Energy weapons get away with it because they, are, you know, energy (and they apply - mostly - heat energy to vaporise the local area as their "cutting" method (see lasers)).

"Sharp" is emphatically NOT the same thing as "thin", which is what these people seem to think. (Sword with monomolecular edge to the blade, yes - because you've got something to give some welly to and to resist the equal and opposite force applied over that very small area. This is why swords (and knives and scissors etc etc) are not made of thin plates...)

As described in a lot of these places, monowhips are actually basically magic, or would have so be so supported by technology that the technology is doing all the work - because the strength of a single molecule is actually basically negligable.

A really, really, really STUPID example of this was in a Star Trek novel I read, whereby an alien race used monomolecular wire web strung between starships as a weapon (i.e. they'd fly past a Cardassian ship on either side, and the ship would be destroyed, because apparently Star Trek shields can't stop something one molecule thick (despite that being the sort of thing that the navigational deflector is expressly designed for). Oh, and they're not held by forcefields, so they're invisible to sensors. The sheer, mind-numbing idocy of that idea I simply cannot describe. It is just about stupid on every single level. Never mind the fact that you'd have to get within hundreds of metres of the target (point-blank range), the fact that it simply wouldn't work (shields, the hull, the speeds involved (significant fractions of c) veres the strength of a material); the most obvious thing in the world would have been to just slice your phaser down an arc between the two ships! Job done! Guess what nobody thought of doing? (And if the material is phaser proof, why not just coat your whole sodding starships with it?! Hell, even if you could only do one, you would still be laughing all the way to the bank.) Grrrr.

And now I need to go hit something, because remembering that particular bit of concentrated stupid makes me madder than the Nostalgia Critic and the Bat Credit Card...

Fantastic work on her mane and tail, those are hard.

I am proud of how the mane and tail came out, but OH MY SWEET CELESTIA did they take effort. I think Beeskee mentioned in the IRC that he thought that the 'Rarity losing her tail' thing in the pilot was an in-joke, and I'm starting to think that's spot-on!

*lich rant snip*

The first thing to realize with "monofilament" weapons like that is that they operate pretty much solely on the Rule of Cool. They are indeed stupid, but to a certain mode of thinking they're pretty darn cool, and that justifies their existence. I personally don't agree with that, but it's something that's difficult to escape, just like a lot of things in sci-fi. I prefer my sci-fi to be a bit "softer" most of the time, partially because I'm fascinated with the concept of GODLIKE POWER THROUGH SCIENCE and partially because I don't like having to think too hard when I'm reading for pleasure.

Personally, I prefer Warhammer 40k Power Weapons, because they at least make a token effort at making sense and accomplish the same thing with much less hassle.

I have no problem with Vibro-Drills. A vibro-drill weapon is something that I would definately call Rule of Cool for. Just who the hell do you think I am? And so on.

If nothing else, it just sounds a lot less like it would end up exploding if used in an actual combat situation.

Preceeding fic: Dragonscar (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=12126854&postcount=280) (alternatively Paladin's and Dragonscale's biographies)

Incursion
Chapter I - Talons of the Griffon
The royal guard tried to get away, but in the shape he was in that was easier said than done. Wounded by claws, fangs, and dragon-fire he attempted to fly away from the deep forest cave. There was the exit! For the first time in days he felt fresh air... and was promptly rammed to the ground. The dark-feathered griffon clearly wanted to end the pegasus there and then, but he was stopped by a commanding voice.

"We want to keep him alive for now, Bloodwing," the unicorn mare said. She was not quite like a normal pony, though, her yellow eyes were like those of a reptile and her teeth were sharp. In color she greatly resembled the green dragons of the deep woodlands, with a sea-green coat and a moss-green wild and spiky mane. She wore a cape, but there appeared to be something hidden under it, probably wings. "Go fly to your master Iron-Talon and tell him to have his troops prepared. It will not be long before we strike now." She looked at the bleeding pegasus. "Pitiful. I expect Paladin to put up a better fight when I catch him..."

The strawberry-colored filly looked at the scene in horror one last time before running as fast as she could in the other direction. Why did she have to disobey her parents and sneak into the Everfree forest? This wasn't fun at all! Fragaria ran, and ran, and hoped the bad ones hadn't seen her...

"Of course I'm sure we were seen. I can smell it.” Dragonscale frowned. “An earth filly. Scared. Too close to Ponyville to just fly and grab now. We need to do this with subtlety and swiftness. The filly knows. She must not be allowed to live. Bloodfeather, this one is yours."

The griffon, Bloodwing’s brother, grinned with homicdal glee. "Consider it done, miss Dragonscale. The small one will be silenced, and we will have our revenge." As he flew off Dragonscale returned to the cave, her sanctuary. The sound was still in her head. Always in her head.

It was late at night, but Fluttershy was still awake. Owlowiscious had broken his wing, so she had volunteered to take care of the bird for Twilight. He was feeling better now, so she thought about getting some sleep. She was just about to when she heard something moving outside, coming from the direction of the Everfree Forest. It didn’t sound like a big horrific monster, so she took a quick look outside. It was a scared little filly! Quickly she placed herself in the way and stopped the panicking pony with her body.

“I’m so sorry,” she apologized as she checked to see that the filly was all right, “but you seem to be awfully scared, not to mention on your own at a time like this. Where are your parents? We need to get you home and into bed at once.”

Even in the presence of kind Fluttershy the green-maned girl was too terrified to speak, so the pegasus smiled at her and took her inside and started cooking some soup for her. However, neither of them noticed the skulking griffon in the shadows near the house. Bloodfeather frowned slightly. He now had to deal with two ponies, but the yellow one didn’t appear to be much of a threat. He was a trained killer, she was, what, an animal handler? And not another pony around, either. Just perfect. Unheard and unseen he looked in through one of the windows. Neither of them were paying any attention to what was going on outside, so he quietly opened it and in one quick leap pounced at the filly with his claws extended.

What happened next went very fast. At the last moment Fluttershy noticed the assailant, and placed herself between the griffon and her ward. The claws struck her side and left a deep wound, but she still stood.

“I don’t know who you are,” she told Bloodfeather in desperate anger, “but you DO NOT hurt my friends! You DO NOT hurt defenseless fillies!”

The griffon chuckled. “And you will stop me? You are resilient, but your death is inevitable. It’s my mission to slay all who interfere, and right now that means you two!”

Whatever Bloodfeather thought would happen next he did not expect her to open her eyes wide and simply stare at him. Simply stare? No, there was some kind of power at work.

“You back down this instant, Mr. Griffon! Go back to wherever you came from and don’t return!” There was indeed power to the pegasus’s stare. She was far more powerful than she looked, and when angered like this her will was steel and her might unstoppable.

“I… am… too disciplined to fall for… your tricks!” he managed to say, and after about a minute or so he shook off most of the paralysis. By then both ponies were gone, so he rushed out the door to chase after them. He could not be allowed to fail. However, something was now in his way: a huge brown bear. He began to charge it, but with a swipe of its huge paw it knocked him to the ground, the lingering effects of the stare making his reflexes slower. Another strike and he was knocked out. When he regained consciousness he was bound by chains and surrounded by royal guards. Not according to plan.

“There, there, you should be all right now,” the nurse told Fluttershy, “there will probably be scars, but otherwise you will be just fine.” Her friends were visibly relieved.

Fluttershy coughed, but responded with a smile of her own. Then she remembered. “What about the filly? There was a little filly who…”

“Don’t you worry about that, sugarcube,” Applejack assured her, “Lil’ Fragaria is back with her parents, and guards are there too. Whatever’s going on they’ll get to the bottom of it.”

Pinkie moved uncomfortably close to Fluttershy. “You know what you need? A party! Nothing helps a pony to recover like a party, you know. Just last week, I…”

They all continued to be cheerful and happy, but one of them felt uneasy. Rainbow Dash had thought about it ever since she heard what happened, and she was worried. She was the only one of them who was familiar with griffons, and she had dark suspicions. If this was what she thought it was… WHO she thought it was…

Personally, I think that rule of cool has no place with monofiliment stuff.
In as much as a weapon whose explanation for badassery is basically Yay Science!, doesn't get as much leeway with, you know, science.

Exxaactly.

If thou shalt invoke science in thy fiction, thou shalt at least have a first clue as to thou art talking about, unless thou is most desirest of a rocket launcher beating applied to thine internal organs.

Thy soul's internal organs.

I don't mind psuedo-scientific bullcrap, if at least you've tried. Monowhips are so utterly stupid, they are in the "the aliens have a different periodic table to us" territory or "making the bolt inherently aerodynamically unstable means it makes it more accurate for shooting at targets that can dodge"1.

Whips made of little connected blades? Fine. Whips made of energy? Fine. Whips made on the basis of thin equals sharp? Pass me my Snake Launcher.

I'm fine with monomolecular edges, though. They are at least less painful to my brain than 'vibro' weapons.

I dunno. Vibroweapons - and they are a fairly common thing in sci-fi and often different in each one, so exactly what you've been exposed to varies - are not quite as unreasonable, depending on the occilation of the weapon. The ones that I first encountered (in Douglas Hill's books) were the ones that I associate with vibro-weapons; essentially they work a bit like an electric carving knife. (One assumes that in most if not all cases, the handles would be shock-absorbant, so the vibration doesn't reach the wielder.) This improves their cutting ability, as basically it meant they worked a bit like a saw, kinda.

How. Ever.

It must be said that the vibrational effect in a lot of sci-fi is waaay over-stated; it improves the cutting ability (for a given value of "cut"), not makes a blade into a fragging lightsabre.

(After all, there are some things that use the same sort of principle in the real world.)

1Actually, the tumbling bolt deserves a special mention for being quite probably the Most Stupid Thing I Have Ever Encountered.

As I once (infamously) said:

Who can forget the delight of Sword and Fist's tumbling bolt? I certainly can't, and I've tried. Even after repeatedly cleaning my skull with anti-francium, the horror remains.

Yes, let's make the attack more accurate by making it aerodynamically unstable. (Fer crying out loud, they used the word tumble! If you had an aircraft 'tumble' it usually means it's about to make unwelcome aquaintence with the ground, assuming it gets that far!)

This is not so much raping the laws of physics (which D&D and fantasy do as a perfectly acceptable matter of course), as violating the laws of physics in front of it's parents, juvenile siblings, various friends and acquaintences and any nonevil ecclesiastical personality of your choice, then sueing the laws of physics for damages incurred and winning.

I agree with you, I just have an irritating habit of attempting to play Devil's Advocate in any given argument.

I'm just the Element of Contrariness, I suspect. ^^"

@vibroblades: I'm fine with them as long as they're portrayed somewhat realistically. They wouldn't be able to cut through absolutely anything (in fact, their primary use would be in penetrating body armor and allowing soldiers to cut through obstructions, two areas in which they are hopelessly outclassed by modern tech), and they'd probably be limited to small blades like knives without some sort of technobabble explanation for why the oscillation doesn't increase towards the tip.

@fighting games: I'm also mostly used to SSB. ^^" but I'd be happy to give this game a shot as long as it isn't full of MK Walkers. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MKWalker)

Neat. I may have to draw that sometime.

*Gasp* Someone else who played Tech Romancer! On Dreamcast, no less! Hell yeah!

Anyway, I love fighting games. I'm terrible at them, but love them all the same. And Fighting is Magic is not on one of the new consoles, so I'll actually be able to play it! Woo!

I hope it's going to be online. We should get a tournament going

Tech Romancer was, and still is, my favorite fighting game. I got stupidly good at using Kikiaoh/G. Kaiser and Dixen.

Now I want to dig out my Dreamcast...

Same here. The only fighting games I ever played were Street Fighter Alpha 3 and a game were you played as mecha I cannot remember the name of, and I was terribad at both. But this is a pony fighting game, and I WILL master it!
Though I am still worried the game could end up on the receiving end of a Cease & Desist from Hasbro...

The game with the mecha was most likely Tech Romancer.

What would Griffon-Jayden look like in a harem outfit? I'm guessing 'angry'

...would make happy Lixie though. ;3

It must be said that the vibrational effect in a lot of sci-fi is waaay over-stated; it improves the cutting ability (for a given value of "cut"), not makes a blade into a fragging lightsabre.
Amusingly, vibroblades are the primary non-lightsaber melee weapon in star wars. :P

Hmmmm...I doubt it. While I am NOT all that versed in copywrite law, I do know that the main concern for Hasbro is "will this game cost us money" and "are these people making money off our property?"

Apparently, the game is free and they aren't even taking donations for it, so they aren't making any money off the game. I believe that they simply aren't worth Hasbro's time to go messing with and if worse comes to worse, tweak the names and the shades of colors on the ponies, call it a parody and you're protected for the most part there, as well.

As long as no money is being exchanged, I think they're good.

Oh dear, I actually went through the missed pages of ponythread in detail and found a bunch of stuff I wanted to reply to. This must be how SiuS feels all the time.

Huh-buh-duh-whah? Wow, this might actually become a thing.

If we're doing this, we should do a few things (not necessarily in this order):
A) Figure out the medium
B) Find out who wants to participate
C) Start a thread for it
D) Pick which episode(s) to do
E) Start watching lots of MST3K and other riffers, to get a feel for the art.

I really hope this takes off!

I will write more of this, but I haven't ever produced any online media and I'm not going to take the time to learn it. I'm supposed to be researching a paper on Korean law right now anyway. But yeah, if you want to make this happen I will commit to writing more bad puns. Also, setting me an arbitrary deadline is about 1000% more likely to result in work getting done (I choose not to specify the base number from which 1000% is improving).

I thought that was the point of Australia? :smalltongue:

Also, I need a custom Exalted Limit break related to ponysanity. Care to help?

Didn't see this get answered. So, first off, I think duck punch advanced Sidereal Martial Arts should almost surely be involved. Perhaps as a limit break, your character becomes overwhelmed by the realities of the world and turns their own arts on themselves, temporarily permanently transforming into a pony until their mind can be properly restored. This pony would, of course, be very brightly colored and retain many of the advantages of an exalt, but might have difficulty wielding a 30 foot long sword in his/her mouth. Twilight cast turns into unicorns, of course.

I mostly just don't want anypony to be uncomfortable, or this thread to get locked. I think Kpenguin was just joking earlier, but I'd prefer for that to remain the case

And now, less doomsday and more ponies. I have a question involving an OC. Her cutie mark is a rising tide. I'm curious what the thread's interpretation of that is. She's a pegasus pony, so she does not control the sea.

Couldn't pegasus ponies potentially control the oceans and tides as well? They're in charge of the weather and the creation of large storms and hurricanes is related to conditions at sea, so it seems like pegasi, at least in large enough groups, could exert tidal influence in order to properly alter other weather conditions.

Also, Fighting Is Magic posted a new update (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxFnpBh22Sg&feature=player_embedded)on the game:

I'm definitely maining Twilight when this game comes out. That finisher:smalleek:

Also, I think this game looks somewhere about halfway between smash and Soul Caliber in overall difficulty. Smash had one button and some directional imputs whereas Fighting is Magic has multiple buttons in arcade style. But, it looks way easier than the Soul Caliber games, where you had to do button combos and frame by frame timing to even make certain moves come out. Also, the combos consisted primarily of basic attacks, chained into specials only at the end, so most everyone should be able to execute them if you learn the correct positioning.

I have no problem with Vibro-Drills. A vibro-drill weapon is something that I would definately call Rule of Cool for. Just who the hell do you think I am? And so on.

If nothing else, it just sounds a lot less like it would end up exploding if used in an actual combat situation.

I don't have an answer for this at the moment, but I thought I would point out that I'll be taking a course entirely on copyright law this spring, so it's possible I might actually know something about all this stuff by the end of the fiscal year. Of course, being a law student ironically means I can't actually give legal advise to anyone ever without opening myself to massive liability, but I can probably still comment on stuff.

Strange question time: Would you say that Big Macintosh has an accent, beyond his characteristic "Eeyup"? (and what about Applebloom, while we're at it?)

I've listened to his speaking at the beginning of Applebuck Season, and I'd say he doesn't seem to have an accent, and definitely not the same as Applejack. I'd say the same of Applebloom, it seems that it is only Applejack who speaks that way.

And yet I've seen at least Applebloom given the same accent as Applejack in fanfics and comics. I haven't read a lot of BigMac/Applebloom stories, and haven't paid much attention to their speech in the ones I have read, so I'm not sure how widespread this is.

So my question really is, is Big Macintosh usually given an accent in fanfics even though he doesn't have one in the show? And if so, might it seem odd if a fic didn't give him an accent?

I'm currently writing a small Big Mac fic, and right now I've given him no accent. I kinda wondered a bit whether to change that.

Applebloom usually says "ah" instead of "I" and similar replacements but otherwise doesn't use the expressions or strong accept that Applejack has. Big Mactintosh probably has the weakest accent, although he speaks very slowly and deliberately so maybe he's just practicing to cover it up?

Wow, I can still (just about, if I chuck some other stuff out) keep up with the thread. Might make it back at some point, though I suspect the IRC will not bleed off quite so much ponysanity in future. We'll just have to wait and see, eh?

Just popping in to say that I'm now typing up to the end of chapter three in my fanfic (Blood Brothers, I'll provide a link if you ask and are okay with grimdark and reading the story as it's being polished). Chapter four is between halfway and three-quarters done, depending on where I decide to end it.

Also, on a related note, I need a name for a pony. White-coated scientist, wears glasses. May or may not be Derpy's father from Bubbles (I think that was the name of the 'fic, it was sad and involved filly Derpy Hooves). Currently I've got 'im down as Mortar (as in the long-ranged weapon, and as in mortar and pestle), and that could certainly work. But I'd prefer the best name possible, rather than just working with something that still feels a bit off.

...Oh, right! Typing! Scion, away!

That is not how a villain should make an exit.

Nor should a villain have a pink DSi, that didn't stop me either. Away!

Edit: Also, could I get your opinions on the use of "moonlit" as a slightly more serious pony-curse (assuming "horseapples" is something a pony could get away with saying on the Equestrian equivalent of these boards, but that "moonlit" would be censored)? Is it fairly obvious? Would it work for the rare occasions in which a pony needed such a word? Is it good enough to let me get away with not using actual profanities (I scold myself for using such words, and tend to avoid saying them unless they're part of a quote)?

Yeah, aside from speaking slowly it doesn't seem like he has any special accent. Sadly, "slow speech" isn't easy to represent in written form, which is why I figure it may be tempting to give him a slight accent to make up for it.

Depends what they're made from, doesn't it? E.g. laser energy, electricity, blades, plasma, monofilament wire1...

At my level of paranoia? No. There's spells for everything if you go through enough supplements.

I always assumed the monofilament "whip" worked like a meteor hammer. A weight on the end, so an arc would work like a wire between trees + motorcycle, not... That whippy stuff you sem upset about. I guess I mentally compensated.

I also figured you could use a small amount of energy to reinforce the strength of the wire so it wouldn't bend, and when the current stops it can be wound up again.

This is true, but if Hasbro were to start enforcing its intellectual property rights, they would probably start with the Youtube videos and move from there. It's not like Hasbro is planning on making a pony fighting game that this would leach an audience from. And, frankly, if Hasbro starting enforcing copyright laws, this fandom would die. I see no way around that. But I can't imagine why they would want to kill the fandom, considering how much press and more money they're getting from us. Take me for example. I'm notoriously stingy, I eat on something like $3 a day in one of the most expensive regions of the U.S., but I've still spent way more money on Ponies than any other show/franchise I've ever been interested in (even more than Pokemon). In fact, I don't know if I've ever purchased a shirt or toy from another show, but I have a pony shirt (in the mail) and toys of all the mane cast. And I'm not even done with my collecting.
So while Hasbro is fully within its legal rights to crack down on us, they have to realize nothing good for them could come of it. Right? :smalleek:

I don't particularly believe that there's objective morality either. But just because something doesn't exist doesn't mean it shouldn't exist. Sure, there may be no true, universally applicable form of justice. But striving for that ideal has worth. I think that beauty is in the self, and that human beings can manifest beautiful things through the act of striving for beauty.

But things get rather fuzzy when it comes to the details. What is "better"? Say, you see a homeless. What is the right thing to do? Give him money to improve his current situation, or not give him money, so he'll learn to not rely on others? Or would it be kind to make his situation even worse, because he's probably in this mess because his own past misdeeds, and making him pay for that would make the universe a more just place?
It'#s like Pascal's wager: sounds right on general, but has no practical use.

Huh-buh-duh-whah? Wow, this might actually become a thing.

If we're doing this, we should do a few things (not necessarily in this order):
A) Figure out the medium
B) Find out who wants to participate
C) Start a thread for it
D) Pick which episode(s) to do
E) Start watching lots of MST3K and other riffers, to get a feel for the art.

I really hope this takes off!
Is there any need for plain ol' writers? I don't have a mic, but I have seen every episode of MST3K proper (and at least one of the "season 0" episodes, though which one I forget).

That better be the next thread title.

I'm totally down for that.

Actually, promising news on that front. Apparently in the new pony blind-bags, Derpy was actually named Derpy Whooves instead of Ditzy Doo. That would show a great deal of respect for the brony community if true. Might just be a rumour though.

I thought Derpy Whooves was the biological daughter of Derpy and the Doctor from that one episode?

(On a side note I need to purge Ditzy Doo from tvtropes since nopony calls her that it only needs to be mentioned in the character description as a possible name)

I would say that Applebloom does have a slight accent. It's not super pronounced, but it is there - much like the accents I heard growing up. I think you could probably get away with giving Big Mac one, but since he's pretty taciturn anyway, the most show-accurate way to portray him is to probably minimize his speaking as much as possible.

So I'm playing in a DND 4th edition campaign and we just hit level 2. The setting is intentionally generic and we're allowed to pick setting specific material from wherever we want. I decided to take a Dragonmark, the Mark of Scribing, as my level 2 feat. I thought that its effects, namely the ritual casting and 4 bonus languages, really fit my character's backstory (he was an arcane academy drop out who wound up as an archivest/secretary to a cabal of diabolists for a little while. Don't judge him, there was girl involved.) Then my brain made a connection and after I saw it I couldn't unsee it. Dragonmark = Cutie mark. Now I can't help but picture him with a tome of eldritch lore tattoo'd on his ass.

Just thought I'd share that cause I thought it was kind of amusing.

What, you want objectively correct policy implementation programs? Good luck getting that. That depends on any number of things depending on any number of other things.

No, morality is deciding that the homeless man is your problem and your responsibility. You are then compelled to search for the best way to deal with that problem. You may never find it. You may be wracked with guilt and insecurity forever because of the mistakes you are destined to make. And that's the way it should be.

If you told me you knew the right answer to the problem of the homeless man I wouldn't trust you.

Actually, I'm looking for this one for Leo. :smalltongue:

We now have some "offical" names for the background ponies. (http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/11/official-blind-bag-pony-names.html#more)

Not better, I fear, than the fanon, though I do like the idea suggested of adopting the canon names as second names (or otherwise combining them): "Lyra Heartstrings", in particular, has a very nice ring to it, doesn't it?

1Okay, not that last one; despite being a common idea in some sci-fi, that is one weapon that always makes me skullpalm and point out that PHYSICS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY! It it's one molecule thick, then you can't swing it and even if you could there'd be no mass for it to work. And if it's stabilised/strengthened by a forcefield or something (like energy whips), why not, I dunno, just use the forcefield?

...well, depending on setting, asking why they just don't use forcefield might just be like asking 'we send electricity on tiny wires, why we just don't use pure electrons instead'? :smallconfused:

Anyway, I saw enough materials cut by thin, wire blades to not laugh the idea, all it needs is just something to weight/secure the end not in handle. Plus, one of the most iconic weapons of all sci-fi has monomolecular edge, so I guess that's enough to make me fine with them :smallwink:

Pony naming confuses me. How can they have a name that reflects their personality?

For example, How could Fluttershy's parents of possibly known that the then Newborn Fluttershy would grow up to be shy?

I read all of this series, and the prequel. It was really good, though I did regret reading two horror stories just before bed. O.o;

I think it was a joke, at least I hope so. The closest I have seen is the pic I posted in IRC which got linked here, involving Fluttershy and Discord. So if it is a TOS violation, don't blame the pony who posted it, blame me. :smalltongue:

Perhaps Equestria isn't such a great place after all? Maybe they don't name their foals till they are 4 or 5 years of age (or the pony equivalent) because infant mortality rate is so high. Or perhaps the parents give a name, and then force their child to into the personality.

Pip is a year (or less) old, but he has a name. Although considering Pip is probably short for Pipsqueak, I have to imagine that's just a nickname. Huh. You may be onto something here.

Lyra is a recolor of Twilight Sparkle, Blues is a recolor of Big Macintosh, Berry Punch is a recolor of Rarity, and Carrot Top is a recolor of Pinkie Pie. One of the best comments I read suggested that the pony figures were actually different background characters we hadn't seen yet. Or Twilight cosplaying as Lyra, and so on and so forth.
