Attention everyone!

I require your assistance again. Budding Friendships is still hanging around and we've put out a survey for people to fill out giving us their thoughts and opinions.

If you're willing to lend a hoof, just go here (http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PRPXLLH), answer what you feel comfortable answering and that's it! We're really interested in seeing what you have to say.

I did it!

Well, my fellow bronies, may I present, without further ado, My Little Philosophers: Truth is Magic!

Freidrich Neightzsche

"Celestia is dead! And we have killed her."
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h355/Dodendans/Neightzschecopy.png

Arthur Schopenhoofer
"A pony can be himself only so long as he is alone."
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h355/Dodendans/Schopenhoofer.png

Isaac Newtrot

"I can calculate the movements of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of ponies."
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h355/Dodendans/Newtrot2.png

Thomas Equinas

"All the efforts of the pony mind cannot exhaust the essence of a single parasprite."
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h355/Dodendans/Equinas.png

Aristrotle

"A true friend is one soul in two bodies."
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h355/Dodendans/Aristrotle.png

Those are awesome. We need more ponified historical figures! I've made a William Wallace and a Montezuma in the past (for various madness-related reasons), but now I feel like making more...

Couldn't quite find a good cutie mark for Wallace (who is based on the Braveheart portrayal), though.

OH I FORGOT TO MENTION!

I got a shipping blanket for Christmas :3
It is pink and lighter pink and darker pink and soft, and it has Princess Celestia and Twilight Sparkle gazing lovingly at each other with sparkles and hearts in the background.
I love it to so many bits I'm afraid it will fray to uselessness in the next month or so >///>;

I have used it for cuddling kittens and it has 100% feline approval. Teacup is trying to burrow under it right this instant in fact X3

I love my filly~

EDIT: Pictures~

Celestia has the love of all the kitties~
the lump that's sorta visible in the seat of the car is teacup. Looking at me is her brother Buttermilk, who is the size of a horse. Scotty (butterscotch) is showing us his kitty bum because he's only photogenic when sleeping XD

Braz took a picture of teacup under the blanket because her phone has a flash.

Awww, cute cats. ^^

I need to be nicer to her. I'll have to double down on the hoofrubs. *nod*
Hee.

Hm. *thinks of. Potential D&D character*
exquisite.
(is now curious)

Aye. And her solo album sucked. Which is too bad; she has a great voice, but. It can't be applied to the music she likes to sing, apparently. I can sympathize; I'd love to sing like that, but it's apparently physically impossible.
I can do the singing, which is difficult, but not at that note. ._.

There are upended though, I suppose. I plan on living my dotage in a large green witch Hat and a Gandalf beard c|:-)}}}>>>

"Ah," said she, glancing behind her,
"Ten seconds I'm free and already, an admirer,"
(chases after)

See? :smalltongue:

Ah. I challenge the notion of pedophilia; given that ponies could concievably live for centuries, and Spike is of age for that sort of biological change, it's no more pedophilia than an elf having a relationship with a human; I mean, they're barely twenty, why, lothlorien was still in diapers at that age! :smalleek:

Awkward representation of puberty doesn't affect the quality of the tale, as it's something we'll all be familiar with eventually.

Bestiality again references elf/human divide. Or even having a deity in the bloodlines. Or a bunch of other things that could be a problem but shouldn't; like the fact that Spike is a backwater guy and Rarity is an uptown girl. An artificial divide.

Your move :smalltongue: :smallwink:

Yes, BUT, we saw when Spike hatched from his egg in Twilight's back story, so we know he's considerably younger, and it doesn't matter if they both live considerably longer then humans because... they both live considerably longer. Spike is still a baby dragon in comparison to the ponies, regardless of how old he is mentally or how long they've all been around for. He's frequently called a baby dragon.

I never said it affected the tale, I just said it was an awkward representation. :smalltongue:

Well, not really. Half/human is closer to a racial difference. (At least in my eyes). Elves and humans have a very similar biology. Dragons and ponies are completely different species. Like a lizard and a horse.

Have my standardized greeting.

Welcome! Yeah, it might feel a bit weird being a fan of brightly colored ponies at first, but you get used to it. You so get used to it. ^^

I'm sure this deserves more serious discussion later, but or the time being;

Gimme some details, I'll draw you a pony.
Looks, actions, attitudes; detail is always good.

Well, thanks for the warm welcome, everypony

Thing in this thread is... I feel like everypony but me is an artist :smallfrown: Amazing stuff you bronies get done...

I've been toying around with theidea of a ponyfication of my internet nick name sake who looks about like that (http://download.minitokyo.net/Angel.Sanctuary.409628.jpg) but I'm not entirely sure yet. He's also not THAT fitting for a brony if I'd stick to his original character. :smallwink: But I'll come back to you if you want me to once I made up my mind.

There at war with the goats, apperently. And they have to band together to fight the DDogs.
I'm hoping for boars to show up at some point, too.

"Ah," said she, glancing behind her,
"Ten seconds I'm free and already, an admirer,"

"I'm sorry to leave you in such a swift hurry,
But 'tween brazen and running, running takes priority!"

"Less than a minute old, and already fleeing,
Two friends, spiderbots, and obsessively rhyming,
I'd say that this was a bad start to the day,
But it's the first day I've had, so hey, what the hay."
Why do you even have spiderbots chasing you! This is so ridiculous I don't know what to say!

http://img809.imageshack.us/img809/3537/day224.jpg

"I don't even know if I'm filly or colt,
"And I'm being chased by a spiderbot
They say the first page sets the scene,
If that's this for my life, my creator is mean."
Er, filly!

Adventuring party yay~![/color]

And who are- oh, hey, it looks they turned around and grabbed that other pony in the coat and mask! Heh, looks like we're in the clear...

Also, SiuiS, mind if I uploaded that image of Candle Keeper to Ponibooru at some point or somethin'?

Huzzah!

*sigh*

Some days, PCs...!

So day quest, with everybody's favourite and longest running party (sci-fi mostly). Once again we had a fairly ticked off party because, at the end of the adventure, that one player's character wanted all the magical loot he can't use either at all or not even remotely use well in comparison to the magic user. He was just the first one to pick the new magical item off the ground (mostly because he yelled "mine" almost before I'd finished describing it). He then demanded the archmage give him in exchange an item that he can barely use (and possessed once way back, when there was no party member with magical abilites and that he then bequethed to the party when he left it) and, when refused, was going to take it off the archmage.

Who had just mostly saved the party from an alien Undead wraith thingy, despite having failed her Resistance Roll (she rolled 06 of D100) against one of it's spells - Black Channel II (Urulic Eye), which have the hilarious effect on a failed save of "removes foe's hands".

(Oh Lichemaster , I love the Black Channel spells...!)

Fortunately, this being Rolemaster, this doesn't stop her casting spells (though it does give her another roll to cast her spells that means she could REALLY frag it up). And so she then got within spitting distance of using a lethal spell on him (I mean, we'd got to the point the player had rolled his dice in preparation in case nobody took any action, before the Jedi stepped in...fortuantely? Which would have, incidently, reduced the thieving git to a puddle on the floor, and I mean that as in a natural 100 on an E severity plasma critical "Foe is reduced to a messy puddle. Fetch a mop.")

So we had a very angry Jedi (yes, an ANGRY JEDI. This is not a good thing...) bawling out one PC for being a greedy fraghat and a jerk and the other for waaay excessive over-reaction. ("you don't use lethal spells on friends! Well, Liam.") And then my NPC (who is the only NPC I now allow myself the conceit of running as a full party member NPC, partly because she my favourite of favourite characters) had to stun out the thieving git because he wasn't going to let it go... (And, after fifteen years, both player and character knew perfectly well that this would happen...!)

And so ended with a tweaked DM noting a certain thieving git who has been warned about this sort of thing before has had his last chance; what with him being a mass-murdering wanted criminal who has showed not even an attempt to reform since rejoining the party after leaving it to rescue a completely insane former comrade NPC1. From space prison (where he was justifiably rotting), freeing loads of other criminals while he was at in and embarking on a brief career as a space pirate before ending up back with the party...

I wouldn't mind, but a fair portion of this advanture was to get the archmage some extra kit to close the numbers gap between the parties' offensive abilities. The new piece of magic equipment was totally useless to the theiving character, as he's a non-caster, specifically designed as it was to add a bonus to the archmage's ranged spell attacks...

*skulldesk*

Why was this everyone's favourite party again...?

Still you have to laugh, and we frequently do...

Oh don't worry about the archmage's hands, they stuck her full of drugs and they'll regenerate in a week or three. (This actually isn't the first time someone's lost limbs...)

1Whose own background, back when he was a PC, was a picture of him robbing a bank, and the legend "just one of his many crimes..." And whom I have been trying to flat-out kill for the past six or so adventures!2

2Fairly. I'm not going to "rocks fall" him, it's got to be a fair kill, or it's just fiat. But [I]dammit if the little fracktard isn't living a literally charmed life; and yes, I'm rolling the damn dice for him and I still can't kill the little blighter!

Next time, Gillman, next time your bipedal fish-head is grilled!

The general sits
Beneath scarlet trees and paints
A flame-haired pony
In a silken harem gown
Bound in a demon's deathtrap

His copper spiders
Bring him an old friend now garbed
In that old metal mask
But the friend is released - for
The general fears Brazen

He replies to that friend
Softly, delicately, like
Silk being unrolled
That he remains treasurer
Where else did the budget go?

The general up
From his wooden seat rises
And orders his gun
Carved of Araby olive
To be delivered to him

He loads a bullet
Made of shimmering silks and
A burning ruby
And hefts it with a mad grin
He shall go hunting for love

To his tall airship
He goes, raising sails and
Ordering his men
To follow that flame-haired mare
And may the wind guide them true

Pretty much what these fine, upstanding gentlefolks said. Turns out it was ponies (and a poorly-judged bet with SiuiS) that made me realize I might have a shot a drawing a thing myself! But yeah, Kato, you should totally check out Thanqol's drawthread, and feel free to swing by the Ponythread one, which is linked in my sig!

Why do you even have spiderbots chasing you! This is so ridiculous I don't know what to say!

Because this is what the master commands!

*Spidercrawl away*

The general sits
Beneath scarlet trees and paints
A flame-haired pony
In a silken harem gown
Bound in a demon's deathtrap

His copper spiders
Bring him an old friend now garbed
In that old metal mask
But the friend is released - for
The general fears Brazen

He replies to that friend
Softly, delicately, like
Silk being unrolled
That he remains treasurer
Where else did the budget go?

The general up
From his wooden seat rises
And orders his gun
Carved of Araby olive
To be delivered to him

He loads a bullet
Made of shimmering silks and
A burning ruby
And hefts it with a mad grin
He shall go hunting for love

To his tall airship
He goes, raising sails and
Ordering his men
To follow that flame-haired mare
And may the wind guide them true

Airship you say?

Oh, Terrrrrryyyyy!~

Just out of curiosity, I was wondering what everypony's personal Top 5 episodes are, and why?

Ooh! Good question...lesse...

(In no particular order - too hard to place each of them more exactly than 'top 5')

1.) Sonic Rainboom - Basically seeing RD form a mach cone was the moment where I decided "If this is what ponies are about, then I like ponies".

2.) Suited for Success - I'm picky when it comes to Broadway and Broadway-esque songs that I like, but I really enjoyed Rarity's number in this, and the dresses are hands-down cool, even more so as I go back and contemplate drawing them.

3.) Luna Eclipsed - Ponies in costumes, epic ham, the TRADITIONAL CANTERLOT VOICE, Pipsqueak the Pirate, and Pinkietroll; what's not to like?

4.) Party of One - In a similar vein to Sonic Rainboom, this was the point where I realized that it is possible for technicolor marshmallow ponies to creep me the hay out. Bit of an odd experience, but seeing Pinkie cheer up at the end is sweet, and even angry!Pinkie is painfully adorable.

5.) Green Isn't Your Color - Fluttershy is impossibly cute in this, and Rarity's struggle to support her friend while wishing their places were exchanged is a surprisingly applicable lesson, even for adults. Also, there's Photo Finish and forever!Pinkie; lots of good moments in this one.

Narrowly edged out - Best Pet and Best Night Ever, both solid favorites, but not quite as beloved in my own personal rankings...

Hmm... Let's go with...

Feeling Pinkie Keen - First episode I watched which promptly got me mostly hooked. Seriously, a hydra? In ponies? WTF?

Best Pet - Because Dash and pets and hilarity.

Luna Eclipsed - Sooooo much hilarious.

Party of One - Because Pinkie Pie is best pony.

Sweet and Elite - Excellent song sequence and 100% Rarity.

These are subject to change on a whim, though Feeling Pinkie Keen isn't going anywhere, neither is Party of One. I can't wait for the next Pinkie Pie episode.

Suited For Success is best.

And then, in no order,
Sonic Rainboom
Lesson Zero
Swarm of the Century
A Bird In The Hoof

And honorable mentions to
Feeling Pinkie Keen
Luna Eclipsed

Hey folks... Remember ages ago, in early October, when I was using ponythread as guinea pigs for trying to get that head thing I was designing for one of my models something like?

(What d'you mean no?)

Thought you might be interested to see I finally got something I'm vaguely happy with.

http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u172/AotrsCommander/secretproj3.png

Granted, the head isn't especially feminine, but I think it's within a reasonable degree of beliveable, given what I was going for...

So these are the finished designs, which are ready for 3D printing sometime in January. (These versions are 144th scale - that's 12mm, or half (and a bit less) than the scale of D&D figures - so they'll be about 10mm square or thereabouts. Another day I shall do the minor mods to scale them to 72nd (25mm), so I can use them for both scales of Manouvre Group, and then inflict them on my PCs in the summer...)

Pretty cool. I think they aren't too bad in terms of looking feminine (assuming you want them to). The heads are very sleek and as such probably have some horrible death ray inside that will kill you in ways better left to the imagination.

From eastern lands and incense dream
A desert light falls through London's slums
When illusions collide things are briefly as they seem.

A city on a river and a desert in the sky
A bullet of ruby-silk in a gun of gold and brass
A pony running on the ground and devil flying high
So why does she pause when she hears the rifle's blast?

She could yet have got away - it would have been a miss
And, haremised, she smiles from London Below - and blows a single kiss.

Just out of curiosity, I was wondering what everypony's personal Top 5 episodes are, and why?
Five eh? Hm, now I'm gonna have to think about it. My top one is easy, but the rest...

1) Sonic Rainboom - Well duh. This is the Rainbow Dash episode. We get a situation so stressful that it peels back her facade and exposes her fears and insecurities, and how much they can really affect her, and then get her at her best with the most epic thing in the show and some great selfless heroism spurring her to be the best she truly can. This is why Rainbow Dash is Best Pony. Also:
http://i.imgur.com/aRDpW.png yay.

2) The Cutie Mark Chronicles - Because the stories of how each of the main six got their cutie marks make for great history to them each and character-building for them all. The ending is kind of sappy, but eh, so be it. It's also the only episode with the Crusaders that I really like, because they just provide a framing device for the real stories, rather than being the focus of the episode, so they're actually kind of enjoyable here, unlike in their own episodes.

3) Fall Weather Friends - I just love how Rainbow and AJ play off each other here, and some of the excesses they go to in their cheating (particularly the callback to old cartoons when RD changes the sign on AJ).

4) Dragonshy - Because it's one of those rare episodes that feels more like an adventure show episode than the rest, and it has some great moments for everyone. But, of course, most especially for Fluttershy staring down the Dragon at the end. This was the episode that really started winning me over, after most of the episodes in between the pilot and this one weren't doing it for me.

5) Return of Harmony - Because Discord. He's hilarious, he's got great charisma, great style, he's just a great character to see in action. The plot may not be the show's best, but the comedy is fantastic and just having Discord around is plenty for me.

Honorable mentions: Winter Wrap-Up and Suited for Success (for the great songs), Party of One and Lesson Zero (for the creepy, and the humor), Luna Eclipsed (for the ham, and chicken Pinkie), and May the Best Pet Win (for lots of Rainbow Dash awesome, and Tank the helicopter tortoise). Yeah, lot of honorable mentions. As I said, I really had to think about what my top 5 would actually be.

Did ponythread discuss the great creator Alicorn's latest FAQ (http://fyre-flye.deviantart.com/journal/FAQ-276161988) yet?

Biggest meat is maybe is that AJ's parents are undefined rather then dead or alive, so they are Schrodinger Ponies. Though more seriously its about what we expect, she would have made them dead but that has minimal chances of being allowed on a kids show so downplayed it and never made an official explanation.

Hiya ponythread. I've been super busy over the holidays, and I shall make no attempt to catch up to the massive quote walls and assorted topics, other than to hope that everyone has enjoyed all their presents so far.

But, I thought I should post the poem that I wrote for Brazen Shield so you can all laugh mercilessly enjoy it as well.
Hearthwarming Morning

What do you see when you wake up in the morning,
Sunlight streaming through an open shade?
Did a pegasi clear the clouds for you as her instructor bade?

If you look just right, you'll see light adorning,
a new day, with magic staunchly made
And a shining horn, just visible rising sun overlaid.

And if you run down the steps, you might barely make out
The edge of a leg, colored and bright
As the last of its owner takes back to her flight

Perhaps there’s a giggle, or maybe a shout
As the nighttime deliverer escapes in first light
And you can’t help but smile, resist as you might

For one day of the year, there’s a magic you can feel
Though the visitor’s gone, giving each pony her gift
A faint hoofmark remains, giving spirits a lift

There’s a spirit of harmony, through which all wounds heal
To a lover, or family or friend, turning swift
Share with them the moment, and open a gift!

Also, if Kyouhen wants to post the picture that he sent me for a gift, I'll leave that to him, but it was awesome.

What I found kind of weird about that comment is that kids' media have handled death before just fine. Sesame Street famously dealt with the death of Mr. Hooper quite a long time ago, and I distinctly remember my class reading Where the Red Fern Grows around 3rd or 4th grade and people being pretty upset about the death of the dogs.

Didn't Sesame Street once discuss breast feeding too? We baby kids too much these days on the assumption that they can't handle things like that, while forgetting that there are ways to handle mature topics in a way that won't traumatize children.

Top 5, let me think...

Friendship is Magic - The story that introduced it all, and an excellent adventure.
Dragonshy - An adventure story featuring all the mane six. Excellent.
Return of Harmony - Because of Discord, mostly. De Lancie is awesome.
Lesson Zero - Crazy Twilight. Bear-snapping Fluttershy. Rain-Nuking Rainbow. This episode is just full of awesome.
Sweet & Elite - An episode of great quality, with a nice song too.

Disclaimer: Episodes listed in broadcast order. Two-parters totally count as one. This list might also change at any time its author feels like it.

Quite true, I remember the Littlefoot's mother dying and being sad... didn't stop The Land Before Time from being one of my favorite movies. However while death in children's programming not as uncommon as sometimes thought, there is still the perception and for every Bambi's Mom we have Cobra mooks and GI Joes parachuting to safety after their vehicles are lasered into blowing up. I dare say merchandise driven cartoons are especially over-cautious.

And let's face it, if confirmed on-screen we would probably want an entire episode actually dealing with death of family. But that would be asking that much more.

1. The Return of Harmony, both together as one episode.
2. Best Night Ever
3. Cutie Mark Chronicles
4. Green isn't Your Color
5. Call of the Cutie

Ya that looks good.
Also I finally got all my BroNYCon stuff set up.
Also also on a different note a friend of mine makes cool scarves if you are looking to get one hit her etsy up http://www.etsy.com/shop/TheWolfGirl?ref=seller_info she is in the process of getting more stuff up there constantly and does get more pony stuff up from time to time. Probably a case in point yes? The reaction to Optimus getting killed to the wussiest music ever in particular prevented similar events in GI Joe, the movie didn't even cover its six mil budget, Transformers only went one more season after it that isn't as well remembered, and ended with bringing Prime back. And practically everything Transformers since has to one degree or another relied on the original G1 core.

In short reinforcing the no deaths rule, because we can't expect executives being paid ludicrous sums of money to distinguish from kids picking up on thoughtless cruelty to all their favorite characters at once and kids being complete unable to handle death thus needing complete sheltering from it at all times.

I'd laugh but that wasn't a joke.

So not too long ago the voices in my head waged civil war against them selvs. The Steve Erwin voice waged war against the Russian and German voices. they waged war during math and science class for three days. The Russians and Germans won the war and spared the Steve voice. But then the Pony vocies came and removed Steve from his seat of office in my head. Then I ended up hearing about this forum and I joined, so now that the story of my arrival is out of the way i finally came up with a prolouge and a tile for my story the title is Star Wars: Knights of the Celestial Republic
and here is the prolouge:
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away. The galaxy is in ruins, the Celestial Republic barely holds control over the inner rim territories let along the outer rim territories. The galaxy just barely survived the two most recent wars, The Maredalorian Wars and the Celestial Republic Civil War. The Maredalorian wars over 10 years ago still are causing damage to the planets of the outer rim. The Maredalorians waged total war on the republic and lost there home planet Mareachor XII. As a result of losing their home the once brave and honorable warriors turned to mercenary work and Raiding. The outer rim planets succeeded from the republic after the Maredalorian Wars. Tired of never really receiving and standing army or supplies from the Republic or the inner rim planets the outer rim planets were through supporting the Republic, paying their taxes, or supplying them with food or men for wars. The outer rim planets were barricaded out preventing any trade to the inner rim planets. The planets on the outer rim banded together to form and army and they waged war against the republic. After a long and costly war the Republic won. The Republic forced the outer rim planets to re-join under no conditions. After the Jedi suffered extreme loses during the two major wars they refused to work for the Republic. They even abandoned the Jedi temple on Coruscant. With no Jedi to help them and a sith presence in the outer rim will the Republic survive? Or will their be a new ruler in the Galaxy?

Now, my top 5 favorite episodes, which I've probably posted before, but it's always a fun discussion.

5. Winter Wrap Up: The first episode I ever watched and Twilight's part of the song about how to fit in without her magic was the initial thing that kept drumming around in my head and got me to watch the series.

4. Return of Harmony parts 1+2: That background music when Twilight reads the letters and gets restored as well as when Applejack gets restored gives me chills.

3. Sonic Rainboom: Pure epic. It would be higher but I actually have trouble re-watching it because seeing Rainbow so nervous for most of the episode bugs me.

2. The Cutie Mark Chronicles: Admittedly sappy, but it was such a sweet episode. Knowing all the characters well by that point, the episode actually had a lot of depth. I would never use this one as introductory material, but if you're already into the show, it's arguably the best episode of season 1.

1. Sweet and Elite: Not sure how well this will hold up on repeated re-watching, but it gets my #1 at the moment because it completely subverted my expectations for its plot in a way that made me smile uncontrollably.

What are you talking about? Didn't you see the description text? No secrets, whatsoever. Absolutely none. Why would anyone ever think there were secrets?
And apparently the author isn't aware of the time travel Hitler paradox. Who knows what kind of alternate reality Sweetie Belle just unleashed.

Of course, which is exactly why nothing involving Hitler ever happened in that game. After all, that would imply some sort of secret.

Of course, Sweetie Belle doesn't have to kill Hitler. Hitler, seeing this adorable pastel pony scooting past, modified his evil plans. All the scientists who eventually fled Germany during the war were shown evidence of Sweetie's existence, and they joined Hitler in his attempt to create a portal to Equestria. This project was on such a scale that all of Germany was required to assist. And they did, with gusto! Britain and America and all those silly countries who opposed Germany declared Hitler a madman who sought to destroy the pancreases of every human on the planet and rose against him and his evil goal to bring adorableness to the world!

No, Equestria has Hazmat suits with Radioactive Warning Cutie Marks on them! Equestria has (or had) used Atom Bombs and/or has access to the materials to make one. Hitler doesn't want to bring adorableness to the world, he wants the SONIC RAINNUKE.

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to pony. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight's Zone.

I really wish I had any poetry talent. Too many good poets in this thread. :smalleek:

Poetry, at the beginning, is a matter of rhythm. So long as the meter (syllable count/up-down flow) Works, and the words of every other line or so rhyme, you're fine.

Didn't Sesame Street once discuss breast feeding too? We baby kids too much these days on the assumption that they can't handle things like that, while forgetting that there are ways to handle mature topics in a way that won't traumatize children.

Eyup. I suspect it is far less the trauma of the children, so much as the sensibilities of the adults who raise them. But what can you do? I feel it's not the government's job to raise kids, so public schools and excessive television restrictions, to me, are bogus.

Do you mean the elements as in 'big crown thingie' or the elements as in 'the metaphysical manifestation of loyalty'? I've got theories about both, and discussed some in the Old Stories.

"Big crown thingie" and the necklaces. and i really do need to get around to reading that.

Nothing ever dies; they simply change form. When the elements are shattered, the spirits that empowered them escape, returned into the earth. Translation lessens and defocuses, though, and raw, unrestrained elements astride the worth are chaotic and disharmonious, falling too strongly in some places and too weakly in others. Convincing these spirits to, once again, lessen themselves and be reforged into gemstones will end the chaos.

But these things are challenges unto themselves. When standing and facing Generosity, unrestrained, unbridled, how can you not give him everything he asks for? When facing Honesty, how can you not speak your mind honestly, even when it's unwise or dangerous to do so? I could spin a season out of this.

This looks like such a hilarious troll.
It's most definitely real. There is at least one traditional stinging nettle soup that I know of. The recipes vary, but they exist. Don't remember if I ever tried any, though.

In pony-related stuff, when you have to spend 26 hours on a train and forget to pack any books, having a pencil, a notebook and knowledge that ponies exist can save you from http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lv2vdjb9RB1qh8t5wo1_100.gif

Yes, I know you're only directly responsible for the first one, Thanqol. I still find Mask the most compelling of the Thanqomponents.

Also, worth noting. Your signature freaked me out. My gut clenched, I hyperventilated. Sheeted claws of dark snaked their way up into the peripheral of my thoughts. Heaven only. Knows why. It was but a second until I re-mastered my responses, but still.

Ah, clarity and context.

What was it that happened to Eadric? 'His reality crystallized, shattered, and rearranged itself neatly.' you are phenomenal at making me reframe things and then deal with them, Phoekun. Saizho.

Yay, a Phoe-post! Not to mention that this struck me as remarkably picturesque...

Picturesque is what she does, I've found. I wouldn't have admitted to dabbling in fanfiction or shipping, had she not stopped me dead speaking of tiny daggers to the heart. I wonder, occasionally, and envy; what could I have done to so masterfully evoke with but words? I do fancy myself a bard after all, inept at the craft as I am. But there's a lesson there in itself. I am not Phoe. I am me, whoever or whatever that person happens to be. I have my own life, self and story. I have my own value to bring to those around.

My, but I'm introspective all of a sudden.

Gone?

Across the Western Sea, the endless expanse of the mind, the wind follows like a wake in the path of an impossibly large, flat expanse. A dose miles over the rippling waters, a continent, a mindform, forged slowly from the molten crucible of a child's mind, ringed with mountains and the rare, primal tree twisting towards an even further heaven.

The camera zooms, dips, hurtling towards the edge. Other, similar land masses on the peripheral, floating on their own paths, trundling out some long, impossibly slow dance amongst themselves. Paths can be seen now, between the peaks. Paths and caves and lakes, snow caps with nary a cloud. Still we hurtle in, and now canbe seen brader valleys, some wooded, others boggish. Nestled in a slow decline between several gentle peaks, a small village or largish major house, abandoned, brick red paint Peeling slowly in the wind and sun. Willows dance in a circle in the breeze, but still we fly on. Bank, pulling up, but gaining speed, the world a mountainous green blur fading to the ripped bluepurpleorange of eternal sunset, clouds, hundreds of clouds just barely visible far far above, like undulations in the sand of a beach. Transitioning.

The descent is just as swift, swifter; meteoric. One takes now at man height before a bridge, rickety, seemingly made of twisted bits of wharf and pier. Below, the ripple of silver waters, the same orange blue in purple of the clouds, eternally mocking themselves in reflection. What was once a crevasse, now a moat. To the right, the eternal forest, seen ever from the corner of the eye, but only here just across the bridge could one face it head on without it fading. But the woods, the bridge, they are meaningless. Cheap symbols of childhood given meaning through nostalgia and romanticism.

To cross the bridge is to sway, sensuously, and dance with the wood and the wind. One must breathe in Rhythm with the creaking, the sway. It is a meditation, one long forgotten. Across, soothed by the slow earth pulse of the shifting accompanied by gentle movements of the water, one finds suddenly a cathedral, wrought of gothic geometry to giant proportions, the slow cool brown of sandstone in the dying sun. The doors open effortless, unknowable whether they be stone wood or curtain. The movement is as a dream. The interior is bright, warm, flickering like a candle's heart. The fane. The camera shifts. From above, steeply, the scene is established. Deep chocolate-black robes cling to the visitor, cowl pulled high on the unseen brow. They step from the camera to the top of the screen in this bird's eye view, treading with the soft crumple of velvet down a long deep red carpet between pews, jutting like broken-yet-regular teeth in Euclidean mockery. The edge of the lens is fogged, for all one knows the pews may not exist as anything but a mirage, a trick of the scenery. They are sacred in their profanity, sharp, angular. They are in the end, unimportant.

It shifts again, over the shoulder and low now, as this one stands before a statue where either the altar or the stage would be. For now too this is an opera house, a theatre, with golden brass and red splashes cavorting amidst notes of unfocused light. The statue, too, is immeasurably tall, beyond proportion and scale. It is female, and posed. Curves, soft milky mocha stone, marble in texture to the eyes, always different. Today it is uninterested, or feigning so. It, too, is not the focus. She wears neither the chains nor wings of yore, but holds a single candle, or torch.

Softly, reverently, this one steps up the dais. One foot. Another. The last.

Surmounted, the journey begins, a slow, measured panning as the figure moves slowly counter the clock, watching the walls as it passes. There, to the fork right of Her, a door that leads to curtains and satin and chains and plaster, every intimate scene from the violent to the sexual to the passionately sad. Here, the left fork, a white alabaster portal leading to labs and larders and pantries of herbs drying like a mummy's dust, sifting in the slow currents, and the dungeons of the mind.

A full circle. Here now is the central path, downward and shrouded, invisible. This one can feel it; the fanged serpentine beast thrashes below, a thing of fury and Id, bound by chains and sword, pulling at the foundations of the building with the patience of a Titan, the speed of continents meandering. This too is passed by. Another circle is made, the balcony far far above the entrance now seen. A figure stands, a memory, who blows a kiss and casts a rose before fading. Again the circle is made.

Here the door, limbed in deep orange light at the base of the statue, visible only now. A new place, not part of the architecture and yet always there. The door leads in its fashion to a long hallway, arabesque arches on either side leading to small cubicles strewn with papers blowing slowly in an unfeelable wind. The steps continue, towards the long arch and high, bleak grey slate steps at the end. This one pauses a moment to reflect before ascending, for this is the end. A name, to mark what this one is. The memory of words read or spoken, and so, Memory Of Words exhales, and begins the ascent. It is steep, and smells of cold stone and neglect. Stale.

Atop the steps is a round floor of poorly fitted cobbles, crowned at its farthest end with an elaborate throne, seating a bundle of armor and robes, a circlet grasped firmly in the gauntleted fingers like a life preserver; the whole is coated in webs thick as steel wire. Memory of Words walks forward, towards the throne, sinking. A yard before the throne the cloak falls, empty, the memory vanishing, the words delivered. Fingers clench on tarnished silver and there is an inhalation, deep and strained. Vigor returns, the figure shifts, posture and prance reasserting themselves. Swirling, filling lungs unused to notice, the breath rattles, and flees, chased by a low growl of words long unspoken, long forgotten.

Arrr Peeeee...

Heavens, my apologies. The thought occurred and then took over. I've been as of in a trance these last thirty minutes... No use for second thoughts now, the effort is already spent. Effort for nothin at this point would be criminal.

Hm. Perhaps because it's a possible contradiction of 'You can be more'? Perhaps because an acknowledgement of limitation seems entirely at odds with my philosophy?

But remember that I have three philosophies, that I articulate at different times and at different volumes. While Nothing Ever Dies/Jayden is the one I talk about the most frequently, that's because it's the one that lends itself to preaching. Hope, optimism, pride, empowerment, energy, life - the stars are here, down on earth, so bright they blot out the stars above. That's a message people need to hear, and need to be reminded of.

That's one of my principles. If you don't like it, I have others. One like blue steel, inflexible and forward facing. And the other's smothering, comforting darkness and the joy within darkness. I don't talk about these others as much.

But they're a part of me. And I'm better for that.

In stark contrast to AotRS, I name any piece of technology that's capable of holding my thoughts. To me, that makes it alive, intimate, capable of showing me things I didn't know about myself. My computer is Inspired, my laptop is Continuity, my ex-computer, rest her, was Thief of Breath.

They don't die. They just change. The signal changes, raising and lowering in volume, but it doesn't stop. You can define a person as a set of chemicals arranged in a certain structure, a mind placed in a certain way, conversations had and not had. But each one of those things influences the world around them, and will continue to do so forever, and ever, down through time.

Do we exist as independent fonts of potential - are our lives simply a matter of everything we might do? Or is the true measure of our lives what we actually do? If it's the former, then death is the end; the end of possibility. If it's the latter, death is but another note in a never-ending symphony.

She was fleet of hoof and scared of heart,
No stranger to fear; her body knew each step
She hardly cared that sky was turning dark
She had run this way before, and knowledge was kept.

Hark! Through the fog the airship comes!

The demon cloaked in red grins mad as he lowers his gun
And roars in triumph like a bull victorious for its mate
The light in his eye burning fiercer than the midday sun

"To meet her here," he laughs, "Be the finest workings of fate-"
Then to his crew he bellowed, "To London! Away, away!"
The ship descended from on high, like a raven winged with hate

The golden wind blew through his fur as they fell to stay
Among the spires and peaks of the ancient city born
From the marshes made stone by the ancient Roman way

The ship swam through jasmine-scented breeze, past the thorn
Of some ancient minaret stabbing upwards into the sky
As some night watchman calling "To Arms!" blew his horn

The captain laughed, taking up in his paws chains, saying, "Fie!"
The chains awoke and writhed like a cat caught in a cage
And spoke he, standing proud and tall, "By Celestia upon high-"

"I'll give a year's bounty to the one who catches her - page
Or knight, I care not which. To him I'll give gold and ground
Rubies in a glass; the finest vixens to serve wine of fine age!"

So they descended almost to the cobbled, desert ground
And chased her swiftly, like a fox driven before the hound

Mask is not capable of producing a happy ending under her own power. Happy endings must be inflicted on her, usually against her best efforts. Still waitin' on Raz to figure if they got away.

Funnily enough, despite his best efforts to the contrary, which are continually hamstrung by his romantic ideals and his phenomenally poor judgement, neither is Raz.

We may have to have Tectonic act as a diplomat, here.

If it's the former, then death is the end; the end of possibility. If it's the latter, death is but another note in a never-ending symphony.

The question then, of course, is what kind of note we want to be - off-key, discordant, or perhaps too soft to be heard and appreciated, or perhaps too rich and bellowing, drowning out the other notes...

Or one that flows with the symphony at the command of the conductor, that rings out brightly and truly, that lifts up all the notes around it - maybe even notes ringing out in an entirely different part of the symphony - and that becomes an irrevocable part of the beautiful melody that the conductor intends.

Not this stupid meme again. :smallannoyed: It was old when it was candlejack, and its older now that its Apple Jack. heck, I'll say Pazuzu Pazuzu Pazuzu and Hastur Hastur Hastur while I'm at it, then proceed to call the true name of a demon and a fair folk.

then whip out my magical trident, and because I've read Harry Dresden and some of Iron Druid Chronicles, plus the fact that I have Scion and Exalted, I proceed to kick all of those summoned evil's asses to next week using my divine water powers, then punch the very concept of this stupid meme into Oblivion, because I'm just that annoyed with this meme.

and now because I'm an awesome urban fantasy nerd plus Exalted-Scion Hybrid, I proceed to blast my own annoyance from this thread, so that we return to your regularly scheduled love and joy. Because I feel like it. :smallcool: You are now free to call me an egotistical godmodder killjoy who doesn't understand memes. :smallamused:

Can I cheer you on instead? I'd really rather do that than the other thing.

I don't get that candlejack jokes. Never heard of that meme. Is that new?

It's fairly old, as these things go. (http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/candlejack) Never liked it, myself. Which is weird because I tend to find all memes absolutely hilarious. But I've never watched Freakazoid, which I think would help appreciate it.

In all seriousness... why aren't you?

They don't die. They just change. The signal changes, raising and lowering in volume, but it doesn't stop. You can define a person as a set of chemicals arranged in a certain structure, a mind placed in a certain way, conversations had and not had. But each one of those things influences the world around them, and will continue to do so forever, and ever, down through time.

Of course they keep on influencing; but only in a certain configuration they do it in a certain way. Ad any configuration can and will come to an end. The more complex a configuration, the more unique are its qualities and attributes. And if a configuration becomes complex enough, it will be impossible to recreate it. So when the configuration comes to an end, it will be dead forever. Things always transform, and that means that something is destroyed and something else is created.

Do we exist as independent fonts of potential - are our lives simply a matter of everything we might do? Or is the true measure of our lives what we actually do? If it's the former, then death is the end; the end of possibility. If it's the latter, death is but another note in a never-ending symphony.

Live is what we do. And death is the last thing we do. Then: darkness.

Hi there ponythread! Long time no see!

Three ponies ran through town
One of them wearing quite the frown!
Where are we going?
Why aren't we slowing?
When suddenly danger abounds!

Funnily enough, despite his best efforts to the contrary, which are continually hamstrung by his romantic ideals and his phenomenally poor judgement, neither is Raz.

Ace, mate. Really ace.

No one asked for my opinion but, here it is anyhow! Now, what are we discussing... it would appear to be death, and what it means. And how it affects life? Well, that depends! Depends on what you think and believe. I... won't attempt to sum up my thoughts on the matter, but 'tis an interesting discussion, and one most would not expect to find in Ponythread!

you picked a rather bad time for review, most ponies are occupied with holiday business to probably review at the moment.

let me see if I can help:

as a prologue, this is too lengthy and a bit dry, prologues isn't so much there to explain a premise but rather to entice the reader by setting up a conflict or mystery.
Prologue - A Matter of History and Legend
924 years have passed since jealousy and hatred were made flesh, and Nightmare Moon was born of the long-repressed negative emotions of Luna, Princess of the Night, and Co-Regent of the Magical Land of Equestria.

924 years have passed since Princess Celestia, benevolent and kindly, was forced to wield the strongest magic known to ponykind, the Elements of Harmony, against her own kin.
It had never been Celestia’s intention to banish her sister; to do so was to take away a part of herself. No, she had intended to strip away the layers of darkness; peel back the skin of hatred manifest, and release her beloved kin from the shell that had consumed her.
Emotions are powerful things, however, and this avatar of negative emotion proved too powerful, and the Elements, fuelled not by camaraderie and friendship, but by desperation and longing, failed to have their desired effect.

However, Celestia had powerful magic, and even as the spell failed to do what she had intended, it the attack still did was it had to do; remove the threat to Equestria.

Thus, the Banishment began, and a new age dawned for Equestria, and age in which Celestia would rule alone, being strong for her subjects, for her little ponies, despite her own despair and loneliness.

924 years is a long time for mortal ponies; in that time, generations have come and gone; Equestria has changed and grown; in all but a few circles, the true events of that fateful day have been lost to history, with memories relegated to folklore and tradition, with the tale of The Mare in the Moon, and the practice of celebrating Nightmare Night being the most common.

Yet time can play tricks on memory; it can warp fact and twist truth, and can birth new legends, far removed from actual events. In some quarters, stories were told of a fourth race of ponies, of whom Celestia was the last, or of the mysterious King Equestria, said to be either Celestia’s husband or father. Some claimed that Celestia was a goddess; others insisted she was a visitor from another world, or a living avatar of the sun, whose fiery image adorned her pearlescent flanks.

Many of these stories were obscure or little-known; some were born of mishandled historical research, others as a result of miscommunication. Yet others were merely the result of a frazzled and under-educated parent trying desperately to answer the constant questions of an overly curious and incessant foal.

Some were considered harmless, others foolish; some were condemned as blasphemous, and others praised as a brilliant piece of storytelling.

Very few made their way to Celestia herself; her closest courtiers had an understanding that the topic of this long-ago event was painful and upsetting to their ruler, and they could not bear to see her hurt, and thus endeavoured to keep them a secret.
Occasionally, the courtiers would see no harm in some silly little old pony’s tale, but more often than not, the stories had a sad or terrible twist; Celestia was an orphan; her husband’s body had become the earth they walked upon; Celestia was a usurper; Celestia was a traitor; Celestia was a tyrant.

Once such dark-natured legend was a story of two sisters, accidentally given previously inequine powers by a malevolent spirit who threatened their herd, and how the younger became hailed as a hero, whilst the elder was largely ignored, and fell victim to jealousy, eventually trapping her troublesome sister in the moon, and seizing the throne for herself.

This story became known as The Legend of the Unicorn Queen, and it was clear to all who heard it that the jealous elder sister was supposed to be Celestia. It was banished to the Cantalot Bureaucratic Vaults, where documents of a particular nature were sent to be lost forever, and promptly forgotten.

What Celestia’s courtiers did not know, however, was that this legend had followers. Followers who took the story seriously; believing it to be true, and determined to one day restore their beloved Queen to the Equestrian throne.

They called themselves the Court of Unicorn, and were led by a family of charismatic Canterlot unicorns; the Noble House of Silver, with the title of Chief Courtier passing from father to son.
In the 924th year after Luna’s banishment, the head of the Court of Unicorn was Silver Blade, more commonly known as Lord Silver. This is the story of his young son, Little Silver, and the terrible legacy that rests upon his shoulders.

Sorry for the massive cuts but I think this flows better and sets up more intrigue

It was banished to the Cantalot Bureaucratic Vaults
-Misspelled Canterlot

The Spirit began to grown frustrated of his clever equine opponent, swearing to make his life miserable.
-"began to grow"

The Elder and The Mother named their winged daughter Pegasus, and her sister Unicorn, and, instead of being shunned, as The Spirit had hoped they were instead welcomed into The Tribe, adored more than any other pony before them.

From there, The Spirit redoubled his efforts, launching chaotic effect after chaotic effect at them, until they were living in a maelstrom of dangerous and contradictory elements, which were as much at war with each other as they were with the ponies.
-Both these sentences are a bit long. I think you can break them up a little.

The sister’s put much thought into this problem
-"The sisters put"

Was her sister trying to one-up her, just for the glory?
-"one-up" sounds unusual in a story like this. It's a more modern phrase that clashes with the tone you're looking for.

She turned away, sickened, only to encounter ponies, everywhere, praising her sister for what she had done. Sickened by it all, she went flying.
-You use "sickened" twice in a very short period of time.

Unicorn had left them in situ
-Some sort of misspelling here

Only as the last of the monsters was zapped, by Pegasus, did The Spirit react;
-Unnecessary commas here.

Their battle of wills lasted a good long while
-This description is far too vague and modern-sounding.

Unicorn's hover spell
-I think she'd have something other than her hover spell to worry about. It just seems like an anticlimactic thing to occupy her attention.

Overall Thoughts:

The myth needs work. You use a lot of unnecessary commas, and you need to work on the language choice. A myth like this should sound old when you read it. It should be free of modern phrases and sayings, and should be told with gravity and minimal attention to detail. We shouldn't know that the sun was three times their size, we should know that it was far bigger than the both of them. We shouldn't know Unicorn is working on her hover spell, we should know she's working on some spell to counter her sister's rage.

As for the story, I'm hooked. You've got a great premise, and the prologue has me wanting more. You keep this up, and don't you dare stop writing.

EDIT: Listen to Kairaven, he knows what he's talking about.

Cool! But 10mm square? That's tiny! :o

I still say that the Grim adventures of Billy and Mandy & Invader Zim are nessicary for one to grow up as a balanced adult.

Consider me balanced then...

Indeed. Though the exact nature of self, story and value is something I am still struggling to uncover.

That sounds like a good episode. I think that's the right way to go about challenging Applejack as well. She's such a stable personality, so the way to develop her character is to look at how she deals with challenges and changes, rather than have her constantly trying to grow the way that Twilight or Rainbow Dash do. Let's hope the execution matches the potential of the premise.

I don't get that candlejack jokes. Never heard of that meme. Is that new?

it has been explained already, but; no. It hasn't just recently cropped up, though it has had a resurgence of sorts. If the pile of business cards outside of the non-hypothetical hangar are any indication, Raz_Fox, then Candlejack went to Abductor's Anonymous and got help. now, he wanders by and invites folks to tea. It's no longer compulsory attendance though, unless he's slipping.

Though I will admit the urge to mention Candlejack and then leave an entire quote post undone has been quite strong at time

I'm still in awe how you can make this posts on a phone. I have an iphone now, and writing something drives me crazy.

It's just as irritating for me, actually. I suppose it's a matter of dogged persistence.

And yay! Sweetie Welf!

Thank you.

I'd like to say more, but I can't seem to find the right words. I just hope I'll get the chance to explore her mind in a game sometime because there's layers there I still haven't touched. Honesty is such a powerful concept.

If you get the chance, I'd like notes on the development.

Hm. Perhaps because it's a possible contradiction of 'You can be more'? Perhaps because an acknowledgement of limitation seems entirely at odds with my philosophy?

But it's not. Quite the opposite, I think, in that experiencing a resurgence in the face of stopping power is the definition of your ideal, though seen through another lens. Though it is difficult to articulate...

Interesting, of course. I shall have to plumb your depths when I get the chance. The last is of note, as I think the so-called Ecstacy or Anihilation is what I'm dealing with myself. A sublimation of self-conception for the eventual greater good, while still requiring me to do something terrifying. If I change enough at so base a level then I may as well have died as Me, since I will be an Other at the other end.

The real challenge is going to be investing enough power in this to keep it going so as not to sink to status quo, and have eventual growth lost to mundania.

What's the name of your new phone?

In stark contrast to AotRS, I name any piece of technology that's capable of holding my thoughts. To me, that makes it alive, intimate, capable of showing me things I didn't know about myself. My computer is Inspired, my laptop is Continuity, my ex-computer, rest her, was Thief of Breath.

I'm unsure. So far it's just my Antagonist, fighting me every step of the way. The last was named for a spell book though.

I'm posting off my new phone right now (who I've began calling Escobar Fux). I'm looking forward to the adventures in cryptotypography that he'll sweep me into like a babe in the surf... But more seriously, this is a lot harder than you made it look. Why did they make the keyboard so small.

...

Hey, Welf! Long time no see.

You must learn to make your fingers dance across the keys in close proximity, like spiders doing the cha-cha. Also landscape view really makes things a touch easier.

And it's really fun to find new words, by Typing in three letters and seeing what autocorrect brings up. Like strong becomes stroganoff, or misspelling canterlot got me Constantinople.

Funnily enough, despite his best efforts to the contrary, which are continually hamstrung by his romantic ideals and his phenomenally poor judgement, neither is Raz.

We may have to have Tectonic act as a diplomat, here.

Though I note Tek is already being more confident and outspoken. Maybe some good can come of this?

It appears, then, that both bondage and happy endings depend totally on the worth of the person in whom you place your trust.

Yes.
Though please, I ask of you all to stop usin happy ending like a proper noun. Given my line of work (knock on wood) it is discongruent with the way the conversation is supposed to flow.

And of course Mask is beautiful! Why else would I be chasing her for inclusion in my purely hypothetical harem which may contain purely hypothetical bondage and may exist in my purely hypothetical mansion with an airship hangar?

Habit?
Business cards right outside your door, mate. People care man, they want to help.

Ace, mate. Really ace.

Thank you. It was a personal thing, an intimate act performed unknowingly in public. To find that I had ended up typing it out on a forum left me feeling rathe chagrined. Luckily, it's gone well.

I cannot help but hear religious tones when you say conductor. Intriguing, that.
On life and death, stasis and change; is it not the pause between notes which separates music from noise? Waves go up and down for a reason. Even friendships wax and wane, and in this way remain strong and constant. While any note may wish to shine, the whole is better when in harmony

Is it better to work for the good of the song, or to live yourself as you please and damn the rest? Quite an ideological dilemma based on scale. Surely the note must sublimate to the song, but must the man work for history, or himself?

I suspect jazz has some of the answers.

It's hard to abduct people with two broken arms.

As for nettles, the sting comes from tiny little crystal-like spines or something if I remember even vaguely correctly. There are several ways to prepare them that removes the spines from the picture, making it entirely safe to eat. Boiling is the obvious one. Also, I'm pretty sure that plenty of animals can just ignore them.

[edit] Image fixed.

Poor bloke. To be fair though, it happens to all of 'sm sooner or later, unless they get help, Raz_Fox.

Three ponies ran through town
One of them wearing quite the frown!
Where are we going?
Why aren't we slowing?
When suddenly danger abounds!

...Did I make that limerick right?

I think so, aye. Way to get into the spirit! Reminds me of the ol' sonnet off.

That's the thing, though. This conversation, being one of harmony over discord, and finding how to relate despite differences so profound they change the medium in which one lives compared to another, is directly pertinent to the show and whether we have learned anything from it.

This is the written test. You will be graded, of course. Though not harshly; for we love all of you, and want only the best.

I am experiencing a profusion of well-wishing, it seems, in tandem with the utter blackout of my self conception. Neat!

Ugh, I don't like doing this, but...

Anypony?

Or should I take this as a sign that the thing's just not bothering with?

Seriously, if I don't get any feedback soon, I'll be ditching the whole dang thing. My creative drive always goes at this time of year, and I've got other projects that have been on the back-burner since long before ponies took over my brain.

Sorry mate, I'm just trying to hit the fics in order. I will get to it today if work allows.

Blargh. And done. Well, I got models sorted out for the order in the end. I sort of thought I mnight have tried a fifth, but by the time I'd got to the end of the kunaisensorcruiser, I was starting to get a bit tired and frustrated. And naturally, TurboCAD decided to throw one of it's random wobblies in not letting me add some gun housing to the bottom of the hull for no readily apparent reason. I mean really random, it would let me do one side, but not the mirrored version, so go figure. (So in the end, I did my emergancy-fiddle-stand-by which is to tweak the piece by 0.01mm (though this time I had to move the bits up a whole 0.05mm, which is like, half my 0.1mm design detail level! That's...still not going to be visible to the naked eye...!))

We aim to please!

And by "please" I of course mean "kill with extreme precision" because shooting accuracy is held to a very high standard in the Aotrs. 'Cos we're professionals and all that.

Cool! But 10mm square? That's tiny! :o

Still volumetically bigger than a 12mm scale human...

The 25mm (i.e. D&D minature scale version), which was one of the things I did today (and actually required very little in the way of tweaking, really just keeping those protrusions on the side and front of the legs the same absolute depth, but half the realtive) is about 20mm a side and 16mm tall. Which makes it about...3'9" or 1.15m tall. (The top turret is, interestingly, about the same size as some of the rifles of the random figures I dug out.)

Actually a little shorter than I'd anticipated, now I've just worked it out (not a bad thing, though, because there's always a bit of error when it comes to what measurements you think it's proportions are going to be and what looks right in practise - and I tend to find if I get my projected the size wrong, it's always smaller than I think.)

So, they're a touch taller than a pony, and their heads are about the height to maybe look Spike in the eye (a touch lower than a pony head, I reckon.)

I swear, this is a complete co-incidence!

(I was sort of going for "slightly shorter but overall bigger than a human"; which they still sort of are, given their leg span is long much under five feet in that posture.)

Upon the bridge once was a pony fair
But now was newly gone
No sign at all of her fiery hair

She was gone, into air
In the fog of London dawn
Ah, wasn't she once so fair?

The demon yet waits in his lair
Waiting for her return
And dreaming of her fiery hair

A gryphon tilts her head in prayer
Down amidst the white-feather swans
In her absence, they are not as fair

The water closed over the unlucky mare
As downwards she was drawn
Surrounded by her fiery hair

As she sank below she wondered if she did err
As she began to pray for the touch of Amon
But, she thought, this must be fair
I am just a liar with fiery hair.

Hypothetical Bondage:

"What would your reaction be, hypothetically, if I cracked this whip and said that you'd been a very naughty boy?"
"Probably fear mixed with arousal?"
"Huh. Good to know. Tea?"
"Quite."

Live is what we do. And death is the last thing we do. Then: darkness.

Live is what we do - but we do more than live. When you curse, you're echoing a million sailors going back through history. When you slow down on a dangerous intersection you're acknowledging the unfortunates who died there. When you read a book you taste the actions of the author and every author who inspired that author, every conversation which he had, and which those people had.

If life is action, then action continues long after you've stopped. Which makes it all the more important that we try to produce the right actions.

This is an incredibly difficult position to articulate because it's so counter-intuitive. I've had this discussion before, against almost that exact phrasing (against a Moros).

Well, it could have been that other song, you know, the one Leonard Nimoy infamously did. (If you're not familiar with it, the Ballad of Bilbo Baggins, let me put it this way. It conclusively proved that Lord of the Rings and Star Trek are seperate things and never should the twain meet...)

you picked a rather bad time for review, most ponies are occupied with holiday business to probably review at the moment. That's very true, I should probably have held off for a bit. I guess I just got a bit overenthusiastic about having finally gotten a chance to write stuff (I have a seasonal job, and don't write when I'm working, only make notes during my lunch break.)
I was also a little frustrated, I’ll admit, as it seems like quite a bit of what I post, here and elsewhere, gets overlooked until I draw attention to it again later.

Sorry for the massive cuts but I think this flows better and sets up more intrigue

Many Thanks! I get way too wordy at times.

Thanks, I’ll get to work on that ASAP. May take a few tries, though; most of my writing tends to degenerate into the same kind of style after a while.

As for the story, I'm hooked. You've got a great premise, and the prologue has me wanting more. You keep this up, and don't you dare stop writing.

EDIT: Listen to Kairaven, he knows what he's talking about.

Sorry! 'S very interesting. Veeeeeryyyy iiiinteeeereeeestiiiiing. You should totally write more!

Thanks, guys. I just hope I can meet your expectations; the story's gone off in something of a different direction from my original plans, and the temptation is going to be to try to get it back onto that track, rather than follow everything I've started to build on.

So I was chatting in the IRC and came to a realization. Lesson Zero is a meta episode. Let's look at it this way:

In Lesson Zero Twilight is having problems because she can't figure out what to do for a Friendship Report, right? She 100% has to write one, but can't find her way into any problems that would give her something to report on.

The entire episode is about the writers of the show. It's what they went through in every episode before that when they needed to work Twilight into the picture somehow so that she could write her report at the end.

I'm not sure what Trout Mask Replica is, but it sounds like you had quite the rigamarole...

Trout Mask Replica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdXOXvla1ZY&feature=endscreen&NR=1) is best described as a bluesy, schizophrenic journey to somewhere it never really cares to arrive at. It's an album by Captain Beefheart, who'd made a few records with the Magic Band before Frank Zappa (who he'd gone to high school with) became his producer and gave him the freedom to create it.

Beefheart, or Van Vliet, died last year from MS. :smallfrown:

I suspect jazz has some of the answers.
Is this my cue? It might seem strange, but I've always tried to be a one-trick human. One of my earliest memories is of my father lamenting to me about knowledge. He said that you only get so much time on this Earth, and if you want to make any money while you're here, you'd best learn to specialize. He ran a restaurant and could tell you anything you ever cared to know about the business. But he said it didn't really matter which path you took as long as you were dedicated and really good at it, so I chose to be a starving artist. He never quite forgave me.

The most cliched philosophical question you can ask is "if a tree falls in the woods and no-one's around to hear it, does it make a sound?" If we say the answer's no, that a "sound" is something that's more than just the vibration of air particles, that the vibrations actually need to be interpreted by something to be a "sound," then we can say that "music" and "noise" are two different kinds of sound because we imagine them in different contexts. On that thought, John Cage wrote a fairly infamous piece of music called 4'33" which has the performer(s) sitting or standing in front of their instrument(s) motionless for four minutes and thirty three seconds; the point being that the audience is told "here comes the music" and then given something they would normally call noise.

We are as much a part of the universe as a fallen tree is, but we are a very special part of the universe that can view itself, that can hear itself fall. We turn the vibrations into sound and, once we die, they go back, invisible and unseen.

(There is, yes, a loophole to this which makes the Song singular and everything and never ending.)

I couldn't quite get that as intelligible as it was in my head, but enough rambling for today!

Hrm, although it's probably way outside the point, the science pony in me won't shut up until I point out that the spectral signature of what we would usually call noise (especially white noise) is quite different from what we would usually call music...

Anyway, that's beside the point and everyone may be well aware of it without me pointing it out, but since I had to learn how to do Fourier integrals at one point in my education, I might as well get something out of the experience, consarn it...

And dreaming of her fiery hair

A gryphon tilts her head in prayer
Down amidst the white-feather swans
In her absence, they are not as fair

The water closed over the unlucky mare
As downwards she was drawn
Surrounded by her fiery hair

As she sank below she wondered if she did err
As she began to pray for the touch of Amon
But, she thought, this must be fair
I am just a liar with fiery hair.

The priest, his taste for fancy wordplay forgotten in the shock of the flame haired mare disappearing under the murky water, does the only sensible thing; diving in after her! Oh, the water's cold and the robe's heavy, but not that cold and not that heavy! "Hold one! Wait a moment! I'll help!" These are the words that would have undoubtedly passed his lips if he wasn't underwater at the moment.

This is what I was afraid of.

I'm not all bad!

FRONT PAGE EXPOSÉ
GUILD OF CHAINS DOESN'T ACTUALLY DO ANYTHING
"We just scare folks off with talk an then play bridge or poker" says anonymous source

This is an incredibly difficult position to articulate because it's so counter-intuitive. I've had this discussion before, against almost that exact phrasing (against a Moros).

How so? I find it rather easy to piece together myself. Entirely intuitive. Except now I worry I'm missing the point though.

Ponythread: Come for the ponies stay for the poetry and existential philosophy.

A winning strategy so far.

Today is new years eve, and as I'm about to depart, I'll give my final thoughts a touch early.

I've always liked New Years. It's a good holiday. No strings attached; just a chance for joy. Midsummer nights so hot you can't sleep; dancing in the harbour and fireworks over the bridge. A celebration; an achievement for the world. It's a good day.

2011 has been a pretty good year. One of the best, I reckon.

Midsummer...
Braz, we need to get rich and have a winter home in Australia.

You didn't know what Constant... no, uh, never mind...

No, I didn't know that misspelling "C-O-N-T" would produce Constantinople. Or that an extra z turns Braz into Brazzaville.

Hee. Actually, not ba advice. You'd be surprised what you can learn in pursuit of a single thing.
Myself, I chose 'being happy' as my one thing, which perforce led to a broad array of skills. Specializing in generalization, I suppose.

It is cliched, aye. But it's rhetorical; the answer is less important than finding an answer. Unimportant, even. It doesn't matter if your answer to the question is potato chips, so long as you went through the process of diving how potato chips are the answer to whether an unobserved tree makes noise upon falling.

Or you could say "no, but a tree hitting the ground after falling in the woods does." never seen anyone pull that out before.

Hrm, although it's probably way outside the point, the science pony in me won't shut up until I point out that the spectral signature of what we would usually call noise (especially white noise) is quite different from what we would usually call music...

Anyway, that's beside the point and everyone may be well aware of it without me pointing it out, but since I had to learn how to do Fourier integrals at one point in my education, I might as well get something out of the experience, consarn it...

spectral signature? What's that? It can't be as cool as it sounds, as science has all around decided to not take ghosts into account.
Which is why ghosts decided not to take science into account, by the way. You have to give respect to get respect.

It is not as cool as it sounds, no...but it is kinda cool. See, there are mathematical tricks you can pull so that for any signal which changes in time, you can transform it, and analyze what frequencies make it up. Each song, cough, whisper, buzz, etc. has its own unique composition of frequencies - referred to as a spectrum. Hence, a spectral signature is the thumbprint of a sound or piece of music, or noise unearthed by this mathematical process.

It's also a way that lets you selectively filter out noise and other unwanted frequencies from a given signal - lots of usefulness in data analysis and signal processing...

Living for the happy ending, eh? I can respect that. I mean, it's better than living off it, right?

I didn't really care what the answer was either, but the distinction I was trying to make between noise and music was more easy to understand with that example, I felt.

So here I am.

I return.

I'll try to keep up from now on. :P

So! As my Winter Solstice gift from my mother (from last year :smalltongue:) I recieved one of my dream guitars: A Gibson SG. None of that Epiphone Scheiße. The real deal, baby! I had a few ideas bouncing around in my head for names, but it wasn't until I played that first, amazing, distorted chord that I knew.

His name is Flashpoint.

We went to a brony meetup on the 18th, and did a little jamming with some ponies there. In this video, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABU0ZHTpbPM) you can see us in the back from about 1:45 on. He is amazing. After the new year we'll be hosting a pony-themed jam session, which should be much fun.

Hey! Any of you crazy ponyfolk in the Seattle area? I'll be down there Sunday the 8th, for a little event at a comic book store (http://www.facebook.com/events/317020514983812/). If any of you can make it, make yourself known to the gangly Canadian with the fedora and guitar case. I jump at any opportunity to visit vaguely foreign cities, and chill with over-there bronies.

It's good to be back. Vorpalbob out!

Upon the bridge once was a pony fair
But now was newly gone
No sign at all of her fiery hair

She was gone, into air
In the fog of London dawn
Ah, wasn't she once so fair?

The demon yet waits in his lair
Waiting for her return
And dreaming of her fiery hair

A gryphon tilts her head in prayer
Down amidst the white-feather swans
In her absence, they are not as fair

The water closed over the unlucky mare
As downwards she was drawn
Surrounded by her fiery hair

As she sank below she wondered if she did err
As she began to pray for the touch of Amon
But, she thought, this must be fair
I am just a liar with fiery hair.

Oh. Oh.

It is on now.

I. An Angel.
The fox found himself caught
In his own dreams, and said, "I ought
To catch my flame-haired dear
So I'll find my way out of here-"
When who should he see: why,
A pegasus with mane of sky
And pelt of whitest snow
Wrapped in a cloak of silver glow
She turned her fair head to
Face the red-coated young fox who
Was enraptured by her
And said, "Oh, Raz, dirty's your fur.
Don't you recall why you
Took to the sky? Into the blue
You cast yourself, laughing
And free. Now yourself you are chaining."
She shook her head, so sad.
"Redemption, my Raz, can be had-
Three spirits I'll send here
To free you from yourself." Then fear
Struck the fox, and he cried-
She was then gone. He said, "She lied."

II. Past.
Clinking.
The fox smiles.
"Starry! How have you been?"
The two regard each other now.
Silence.

A frown.
"You've branched out now?"
"Whatever could you mean?"
"You're no guildsman. Good for you," says
The pony.

Raz says,
"Treasurer," bows.
"Still. And hunting the fair."
Bitter laugh. "Settle down with your
Harem."

A frown.
"Not ever like that."
"Stop fooling yourself." He
Replies. "You know why you took them."
Accusation.

"I loved..."
Silence. A sigh.
"Beauty. Not mares. Silk and..."
"You couldn't fool old Starry." He
Chuckles.

A glare.
"No. I was ever
The perfect gentletod."
"And yet you kidnapped and bound them."
Silence.

"You liked
It when they tried
To struggle in your paws.
When you gagged them with silk and bound
Their hooves."

"I was...
I thought it pretty.
Nothing more. Inari
Blind my eyes, nothing more!" The fox
Swayed.

"Well, then.
I'm sure she'll agree-
Whoever the pony
Be - that you have right to beauty."
A lie?

Then, softly-
"Good day to you."
"Good day, my treasurer.
Maybe one day, I'll audit you."
They part.

III. Present.
Purple unicorn.
Red-coated vulpine pirate.
One gives a mirror.

They talk about love
And selfishness and red fools.
He looks at himself.

They talk about such
Beauty as would make the world
Torn by a sad fox.

Loneliness and hate,
Turned inwards, boiling outwards.
Good intentions spilt.

He asks- she answers.
He admits- she understands.
The mirror now falls.

IV. Future.
If kidnapping your future be-
I'll do my best to make you see
The future of a gilded trap
While down this lonely road you tap
In search of fire-haired pony

Think you invite them for some tea?
They cry more tears to drown the sea
Then lie so death-cold in your lap
If kidnapping your future be-

Lonely you'll sit in carven tree
In cold dead wealth your treasure - we
Will all have fled to the black gap
Between our worlds with stolen map
Nevermore to give beauty free
If kidnapping your future be-

V. River.

curling down the river there's
a lock of orange
hair
like fire dampened
out with a puff of
water like

rain that falls when

the fox - he's so
small
and tearstained
and
(though he'll never
tell you about why)
desperately
lonely
he

pulls off his goldandredsilk
and dives

and dirt always
washes
that's what dirt does
in water and bakes in fire-

small little photo
in a breastpocket
(pony face framed by all orange and all red and all yellow and covered by greensilk below hatingeyes)
stays very very
dry
and safe

it sits right next
to a confused
bitterhappy
selfish
foolish
lonely
(shhh!
a secret-)

But the joke is that it's hypothetical tea.

Ponythread: Come for the ponies stay for the poetry and existential philosophy.

I thought that it was 'stay for RAZ_FOX, creator of all that is awesome, and his uglier, less romantically-fortunate sidekick who occasionally does something, Thanqol.'

it has been explained already, but; no.

Look, SiuiS, I don't know what you're talking about. Business cards, airship hangars, Abductors Anonymous? I became Treasurer of the Guild so that I wouldn't have to bother with all that craziness. Just numbers which are easily moved about-

Habit?
Business cards right outside your door, mate. People care man, they want to help.

SiuiS. Really. There is no problem. I am over here being perfectly peaceful with a few vixenfriends of mine who come over every now and then so I can help them with their PurrsiaCon costumes. There is nothing requiring help of any sort or kind-

Poor bloke. To be fair though, it happens to all of 'sm sooner or later, unless they get help, Raz_Fox.

I CAN QUIT WHENEVER I WANT.

Yes.
Though please, I ask of you all to stop usin happy ending like a proper noun. Given my line of work (knock on wood) it is discongruent with the way the conversation is supposed to flow.

"There are no happy endings, because nothing ever ends."

Thank you. It was a personal thing, an intimate act performed unknowingly in public. To find that I had ended up typing it out on a forum left me feeling rathe chagrined. Luckily, it's gone well.

Part of me really hopes you're being metaphorical, because how do you not notice that you've just written something like that into a forum post?

I cannot help but hear religious tones when you say conductor. Intriguing, that.
On life and death, stasis and change; is it not the pause between notes which separates music from noise? Waves go up and down for a reason. Even friendships wax and wane, and in this way remain strong and constant. While any note may wish to shine, the whole is better when in harmony

Your ears are quite good today, old friend.

"Redemption, my Raz, can be had-
Three spirits I'll send here
To free you from yourself." Then fear
Struck the fox, and he cried-
She was then gone. He said, "She lied."

II. Past.
Clinking.
The fox smiles.
"Starry! How have you been?"
The two regard each other now.
Silence.

A frown.
"You've branched out now?"
"Whatever could you mean?"
"You're no guildsman. Good for you," says
The pony.

Raz says,
"Treasurer," bows.
"Still. And hunting the fair."
Bitter laugh. "Settle down with your
Harem."

A frown.
"Not ever like that."
"Stop fooling yourself." He
Replies. "You know why you took them."
Accusation.

"I loved..."
Silence. A sigh.
"Beauty. Not mares. Silk and..."
"You couldn't fool old Starry." He
Chuckles.

A glare.
"No. I was ever
The perfect gentletod."
"And yet you kidnapped and bound them."
Silence.

"You liked
It when they tried
To struggle in your paws.
When you gagged them with silk and bound
Their hooves."

"I was...
I thought it pretty.
Nothing more. Inari
Blind my eyes, nothing more!" The fox
Swayed.

"Well, then.
I'm sure she'll agree-
Whoever the pony
Be - that you have right to beauty."
A lie?

Then, softly-
"Good day to you."
"Good day, my treasurer.
Maybe one day, I'll audit you."
They part.

III. Present.
Purple unicorn.
Red-coated vulpine pirate.
One gives a mirror.

They talk about love
And selfishness and red fools.
He looks at himself.

They talk about such
Beauty as would make the world
Torn by a sad fox.

Loneliness and hate,
Turned inwards, boiling outwards.
Good intentions spilt.

He asks- she answers.
He admits- she understands.
The mirror now falls.

IV. Future.
If kidnapping your future be-
I'll do my best to make you see
The future of a gilded trap
While down this lonely road you tap
In search of fire-haired pony

Think you invite them for some tea?
They cry more tears to drown the sea
Then lie so death-cold in your lap
If kidnapping your future be-

Lonely you'll sit in carven tree
In cold dead wealth your treasure - we
Will all have fled to the black gap
Between our worlds with stolen map
Nevermore to give beauty free
If kidnapping your future be-

V. River.

Okay, so occasionally, I'm wrong. I'll admit it.

Quoted just for repetition.

Please. Celestia is the last person you want to trust with bondage. She made poor Luna wait a thousand years just because she forgot the safe word. Or, depending on which perversion of the traditional myth you're hearing, made the safe word "Raxacoricofallapatorius" and then gagged Luna.

When Luna finally reconfigured the surface of the moon to show the word 'Raxacoricofallapatorius' in letters so large they were visible from the Earth, Celestia ended her banishment without hesitation and acted like everything was entirely normal afterwards.

Luna hasn't had the courage to bring it up.

Our actions top when we die. We produce results and give others guidelines. But they decide what they do with it. I may echo a million sailors when I curse, but it's my decision, my doing, to curse. My actions influence what others do, but I can't control it. If I go on a murderous rampage it may inspire others go on murderous rampages, too. Or it may inspire them to work for peace. Or have no effect at all. What happens depends on the individual. The only thing I can surely and directly affect is myself. And that ends with my death.

I'm not entirely sure what I wanted to say. I guess I need to think more regularly to train the clearness of my thought. But since I'm on a tangent anyway...

You might look into the basic ideas of Buddhism (disclaimer: I only have superficial knowledge of Buddhism, so please correct me if I'm wrong). They combine your idea of everlasting actions with the idea of mortality. One of the basic principles is that there is nothing immortal. So there is no transfer of souls, but the action of one individual determine the faith of his successor, his reincarnation.

it has been explained already, but; no.

Okay, leaving a complete megaquotepost undone would be funny again.

Fun Fact: There has been actually an movement who wanted to replace music with noises. (I think futurism). I remember a quote from music education about how people in the future (now) would enjoy the sound of a train like they would enjoy an opera today (around 1900).

Since 2012 already started in Australia, how is it? Could you give us a warning if it sucked?
For me 2011 has been a year of mortality. I noticed that I'm half as old as my mother, and around one third as my grandmother. My youngest uncle had been mistaken for my brother seven years ago, now he is greying and has back problems. The beginning of my life is over, now it's getting serious. Time is running out. Whatever I want to do, I have to do it now. Only 50 or 60 years left.

Part of me really hopes you're being metaphorical, because how do you not notice that you've just written something like that into a forum post?

I've had this happen too. I started writing a response to somepony, then the words just rebelled and decided to forge their own path, heedless to the pleas of the oppressive Amishman. They ended up crafting something entirely too personal for the thread, and thankfully let me send it as a PM.

Heck, come to think of it, that episode where I locked myself in the forum basement all those months ago was the same thing. I started writing a little joke, and then it exploded into something else entirely.

The only antagonist character I really REALLY want them to bring back would be Trixie. NMM is obviously out since she's as dead as you can get in the MLP verse and now that Luna is a character re-corrupting her would be awfully dark for the target audience. Gilda was just a jerk, although if there were ever a flashback episode to Dashie's days in flight school I'd like to see a pre-jerkass version.

Discord could be fun too, but not a lot of character arc there left to tell.

So yeah, the show needs more Trixie. But I wouldn't really call her evil

i have weird dreams...

Pffffff. I once had a dream about vampire cows invading my house so that they could kill a man with a dog, who had perfect balance, and board the pirate ship in my basement.

Weird dreams... Hah!

Oh so somepony told you after all? Don't drown yourself, Maskless, being ginger isn't so bad as you've been told.

How so? I find it rather easy to piece together myself. Entirely intuitive. Except now I worry I'm missing the point though.

A winning strategy so far.

Midsummer...
Braz, we need to get rich and have a winter home in Australia.

No, I didn't know that misspelling "C-O-N-T" would produce Constantinople. Or that an extra z turns Braz into Brazzaville.

Hee. Actually, not ba advice. You'd be surprised what you can learn in pursuit of a single thing.
Myself, I chose 'being happy' as my one thing, which perforce led to a broad array of skills. Specializing in generalization, I suppose.

It is cliched, aye. But it's rhetorical; the answer is less important than finding an answer. Unimportant, even. It doesn't matter if your answer to the question is potato chips, so long as you went through the process of diving how potato chips are the answer to whether an unobserved tree makes noise upon falling.

Or you could say "no, but a tree hitting the ground after falling in the woods does." never seen anyone pull that out before.

spectral signature? What's that? It can't be as cool as it sounds, as science has all around decided to not take ghosts into account.
Which is why ghosts decided not to take science into account, by the way. You have to give respect to get respect.

Braz is happy.

Braz thinks there is enough mention if her in this post to satisfy her.

I had this concept well before I started looking into Zen Buddhism, but looking into Zen Buddhism in depth recently (Inspirations for Awakening - isn't that the best title for a book of philosophy ever?) has allowed me to articulate the position better than I was able to in the past. "Ah," says the master on his deathbed, "I have been here before."

Yes, all we can affect directly is ourselves. But what we do will change the world in ways we cannot predict and cannot imagine. Thus it is all the more important that our actions are the best ones possible.

Sun came up in the morning, children seem happy, technology still functions and I'm not underwater. There isn't any cereal in the pantry but I'm not super hungry anyway. So far 2012 seems pretty okay.

And reflections on time are always grim, the chill you get when you know you should be acting but there's nothing to do, so you're stuck, lying awake, desperately planning how to start running the moment the sun rises. But think about the final sentence of that. "Only" sixty years left in your life? With modern medicine expanding the way it is, there's a good chance you'll live to 110. Over the past year I've made incredible strides in learning to draw and grown phenomenally as an author. If I keep up this pace for five years, ten - let alone fifty! - I'll be amazing.

Plenty of time to do everything you want to do.

My hands are poised gently over the keys. My totems are in full array, reminding me not only why I write but who I am and why that even matters. My glass is filled with ice, which has some water in between the cracks; this is the best water, of which all other unchilled water is but a mere imitation, and an unskilled one at that. My broken throne is set about me, and I am being fanned and watched quietly by my audience of harem-vixens.

Why, yes, I am holding for response. It is indeed on.

I'll tell you it would be easier if I didn't have to one-up rather than just matching.

I'm seeing more Superman and Robin here.

Don Quixote and Sancho.

In all honesty, I must admit that the words are not my own; they come from Schmendrick the Magician, last of the Red-Hot Swamis, companion of the Lady Amalthea.

I knew the quote but couldn't place it.

It's true that all we can affect directly are ourselves, but the pleasant corollary is that only we can directly affect ourselves. At least mentally and emotionally. Nobody else can lift your spirits or depress you but you. Not that outside events don't matter, of course, but they can't shape you or your worldview without your consent or complicity.

Early happy new year everypony! If your plans include any celebrations of Pinkie Pie magnitude enjoy yourself and be safe out there.
