The plesiosaurus is 15 ft long and 10 ft wide.

Combat

The plesiosaurus is not a hostile creature, but when it is threatened, it responds with deadly force.

Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, a plesiosaurus must hit a Large or smaller creature with its bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity.

Swallow Whole (Ex): The plesiosaurus can try to swallow a grabbed opponent of Medium or smaller size by making a successful grapple check. Once inside, the opponent takes 3d6+10 points of crushing damage plus 1d8+7 points of acid damage per round from the plesiosaurus’s digestive juices. A swallowed creature can cut its way out by dealing 30 points of damage to the plesiosaurus’s digestive tract (AC 25). Once the creature exits, muscular action closes the hole; another swallowed opponent must cut its own way out. The plesiosaurus’s gullet can hold 2 Medium, 8 Small, or 32 Tiny or smaller creatures.

Hold Breath (Ex): A plesiosaurus can hold its breath for a number of rounds equal to 6 × its Constitution score before it risks drowning.

Skills (Ex): The plesiosaurus receives a +8 racial bonus on all Swim checks, and can take 10 on a Swim check even when under duress.

Eh, it looks all right. I'm not an expert on monsters, but I can't see anything glaringly wrong with it. CR seems a little low, but 5 is the highest level I've ever played at, so I'm not sure.

Reach should also apply an extra length for the creature's bite since it has a long neck.

Space/Reach: 15 ft./10 ft. (15 ft. with bite)

It strikes me that you don't have Stormwrack (there is an official plesiosaur on pages 146-147).

Hold breath would also be a good special ability, as it has a 10 ft. land speed.

Creatures generally gain a size when they double their HD. So 16 HD should be Gargantuan. 9-15 HD (Huge) 16-25 (Gargantuan).

Sure.

I do. I never read the Monster sections though. Didn't know there was a plesiosaur there.

Nah. The land speed is just because I don't see it being completely unable to move outside of water, but it's definitely not supposed to come out of the water. If it gets beached, it's going to start suffocating.

Alright, changed. Thanks for your help.

Hmm, would you be willing to make a dire version of it, by any chance?

I'm with Debihuman on the Aquatic subtype/Hold Breath ability thing. Compare to the porpoise (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/porpoise.htm), orca (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/whale.htm#orca), cachalot whale (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/whale.htm#cachalotWhale), and baleen whale (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/whale.htm#baleenWhale). None of those animals are meant to come ashore for any significant period of time (two of them are arguably less suited for it than the plesiosaur), and yet they all have Hold Breath instead of the Aquatic subtype.

Otherwise, this is a really good beast. Good job, Seraphi.

This might have saved you some effort. :smallwink: I mean no offense, but I've noticed other homebrew of yours that could have been obviated had you read the rules more thoroughly.

Well, the plesiosaur is described as a "marine dinosaur". Does that mean it could breathe underwater, or that it could hold its breath? I don't know for sure.

A whale is a "Marine mammal" if that helps...

Hmm, fair enough. Alright, I'll change it to the Hold Breath ability.

Sorry to nitpick, but the Plesiosaurus should be Large size, not Huge.

Their average length is 11 to 15 feet and Huge's starting cut-off is 16 feet.

x.x Seriously? This is why I don't homebrew monsters...ugh.

I don't even care enough to change it though...this whole thing hasn't been fun for me. I'm just going to discard this...

Don't feel too bad, the Stormwrack plesiosaur was Gargantuan for no good reason.

And monster design can be fun, but it takes a certain finesse to get right. The only really annoying part is getting the CR just right; sometimes, there's just no easy answer. The Vorpal Tribble has an excellent guide to monster making here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43009).
