As the new year dawns over the world many wonder what the future holds in store in these strange new times. Many things are the same. The USSR and the USA still stand like two colossi, eying each over their irreconcilable differences. The east and west vie for dominance in the halls of power while on the streets the poor simply scrabble after their next meal. But some things are different.

The storms and cataclysms of gate day left many power vacuums behind, openings for the ambitious to exploit and rise to a power they would not otherwise know. Many diverse nations of all types now stand posed to grasp their place in history. Only one common factor is shared by the many nations. Each has secured a gate for itself, and each has found a cache of the wondrous new substance silverstone.

Now the question remains. What will they do with their newfound power?

Monaco announces it's intention to sell one unit of silverstone. Bids are now open, interested parties should contact the Monaco Ministry of Finance.

"I know things have changed quite drastically since we last spoke, so I would like to take this opportunity to refresh our old treaties."

"We have always trusted you and your people. Enough to put our security in your hands. We propose a protectorate. We will pay you 10% of our nations income, in exchange for the protection of your military and intelligence core."

(Thats 10% of my total stats, rounded up, each turn. So ++ temporary economy this turn).

"As to more recent proceedings, we would like to begin negotiations for access to the Gate by your coastline. We respect that the gate is yours, but understand that it has resources enough for both of us. If you allow us access to the gate, we will pay all the costs of our mining operations, and provide you 20% of all the Silverstone we mine. You will of course be free to conduct your own operations as you wish."

The Independent Democracy of Poland

Lieutenant Gradslow, of the newly minted IDP 15th Recon, focused his binoculars on the convoy of Russian vehicles and tanks below him. Despite the country being freed from communist rule, the Russian oppressors still held a vital resource on the countries eastern border. They had turned the area around the Terespol Gate into a fortress.

Convoys like the ones below him seem to be coming weekly... and with every successful trip the Russian troops were better equipped and better ready for the probable Polish attack. Gradslow sighs and signals for his radio man. This convoy was far too defended for his men to attack, so he radioed to HQ the size and disposition of the convoy. Tomorrow. Tomorrow they would strike.

Military Movements
The majority of the Polish forces are in a ring around the Russian forces in Terespol and the Eastern border (+ mil). There is (- mil) centered around the Warsaw and Warsaw gate area. The last (- mil) is on standby on the south western border ready to react if the East Germans or other soviet bloc co untries decide to go around and attack that area of Poland.

The military around Terespol will generally use hit and run tactics, mixed with a partisan flavoring. More specifically, the forces will hit any Russian convoys where they can get the advantage. They lay mines down on the roads, and use ambushes before fading away again into the surrounding scenary. Snipers and men with RPG's (and the like) attempt to make living in and around the Gate a living hell, targeting patrols and guards... hell really anyone who is obviously Russian.

The Soviet Union
Cease and desist military movements into our sovereign territory. Remove your troops from IDP territory immediately!

-General Leopold Maksym

The United States
Honored United States of America.

We fought with you at Monte Cassino. Our soldiers bled and died along with yours years ago against the horror which was Nazi Germany. We have thrown off the yoke of Soviet oppression which has hung over us like a cloud for years. However a new darkness is on its way, and I fear that Poland can not stand on its own.

We wish to ask to join NATO, and receive the military training and protection that would come with membership. In return you will have an additional country to put pressure on East Germany and other Soviet Bloc nations.

- President Edmund Czeslaw

The United Nations
Poland is a sovereign nation, and we have a right to govern ourselves without fear of military and cultural oppression. We ask that a vote to eject the Soviet troops from Polish Territory. They are currently in an illegal action, defying our borders and occupying our territory.

-IDP ambassador to the UN Petyr Voyshaw

Warsaw Gate Research Base

A small team of soldiers and scientists armed with the best hazmat environmental suits are sent through the gate to report the
exact territory and terrain on the other side.

Canada
Representative from Canada,

We are allies of old, and wish to reconnect our two nations. As you know, we have finally thrown of the yoke of Soviet oppression just for the Russians to occupy our territory. Will you aid us?

- President Edmund Czeslaw

United Kingdom
Many years ago Polish Pilots fought over the skies of Great Britain, fighting the pilots of the Luftwaffe. These men gave their lives. After the war, we were abandoned and forgotten by our previous allies... and were forced into accepting a communist rule under a autocratic Soviet flag.

We ask you now for your support, both politically and militarily in keeping Soviet Troops out of Poland.

- General Leopold Maksym

West German Government
In the past our two nations had problems, but today is a new day. Can we pledge mutual support to each other against the Soviet's and their cronies?

- President Edmund Czeslaw

Green Mujaheddin
Our two groups are at odds with an enemy with the same face. I believe the best way to help both of our causes is to make the Soviets bleed red- both in the mountains of Afghanistan and the forests of Poland. I suggest we exchange trainers and weapons in hopes we improve our chances against these forces.

Will you accept a partnership?

- General Leopold Maksym

France
We oppose the Soviet Union with every breath we take. Will you support us?

- President Edmund Czeslaw

The Swiss Technocracy
We have begun to study the gate in our territory, and I can only imagine the wonders we will find. We wonder if a joint research commitee at some point would be within the realm of possibility.

Also, if you pledge to help us drive the Soviet's from our land, then we can offer a joint expedition into that Soviet held gate.

- Dr. Klara Anastazja

Japan
We have heard of your excellent espionage branch Japan. We are staunch enemies of the Soviet Union, and we could use such expertise in helping us push the Russians back to where they belong. Could you perhaps, lend us some trainers to allow us to fight back against a common enemy?

- General Leopold Maksym

Chinese Federation
Poland understands China's position in the world as a powerful force. We also understand your past as being under the yoke of oppressive, specifically Japanese rule. We are fighting a war, a war very similar to your own so many years ago, and we were wondering if we could ask for your support.

Weapons would be helpful. Trainers for our espionage and military forces would be better, but what we really need is political backing. We understand that you are on the UN security council, and we are hoping that you can recognize that the Soviet Union is acting illegally and oppressively to the Polish People.

We need your help.

Finland

To the Nordic Council:

Finland has been given the somewhat questionable blessing of being a host to a Gate. Until recently, it has meant more a danger to our independence than an opportunity to be explored. However, the situation has calmed down somewhat, and now we would like to begin developing the potential of this new uncharted territory.

However, we don't have much in the way of resources to handle the task with. Therefore, we would like to ask for closer cooperation and tighter integration of the Council, to use all of our funds to send expeditions through the Gate and establish some sort of a permanent presence on the other side. Finland will give access to the Gate to the Nordic Countries if we work together on the research and development projects - however we cannot allow foreign military forces to enter our sovereign territory or, by extension, the gate, due to diplomatic pressure from the East. Finland will therefore handle the Earthbound defense if it becomes necessary.

The Gate promises untold riches and prosperity to us all, but it is also wrought with unknown perils. In the tradition of the Northern explorers, who were the first to find the Americas and for long held sway over the seas, we should be the ones to brave these dangers and find out what fate has in store for us.

To Switzerland:

We will think about it. Try and get the agreement of the Soviet Union and the United States, and we are likely to follow suit.

To Australia
Greetings! We would like to suggest a increase in our cooperation in this sphere in these troubled times. We have always had a combined ANZAC military force to defend the region from agression, and now as you are aware this region faces the potential threat of encroachment from the north. We would like to suggest a strengthened mutual defense strategy and agreement.

To Fiji
You are, as we can tell, under threat both from your internal democratic factions and the unfortunate military threats from the north - especially the chinese who might consider it their right to intervene to "liberate" the chinese emigrees in your zones.
Thus, we would like to offer you what protection we can provide.

To China
Good afternoon (at least in my timezone).
We would like to offer you a deal of mutual cooperation, for unfortunately major ends. There are threats all around us in our sociopolitical zones, to the racist anti-chinese dictatorship in Fiji to the vicious monarchists in Tonga to the significantly more powerful General in Indonesia. All of these things need our collective effort to eliminate, and thus I would like to suggest a mutual arrangement to remove these dangerous forces from our region.

To Israel
It occurs to me that our two espionage forces are some of the most powerful in the world, and thus could achieve great things by working together. Would you be willing to negotiate some form of infomation sharing agreement and possibly cooperation in the fiekl?

It's a glorious new day for the United Kingdoms! We can now look forward to new lands to see and colonize. To bring civilization and wonderful new technologies. The resources of entire worlds are now at our disposal and the disposal of all mankind. The old laws of disparity are no longer true for whatever we seek we are no longer limited by the horizons in our search! Britain has always stood at the leading edge in efforts to colonize new lands but over the past century the nations we founded have all grown up earning their independence and facing challenges with the dignity and wisdom of the best of us. Now it is time for the cycle to begin anew. Even now our explorers have entered the gates to discover what new wonders await us, and we shall be ready to claim those wonders for our own for today I am pleased to announce the formation of the Colonization Corps!

UK to Poland
Indeed you helped us in the past. So did many others. Shall we pick one ally over the other? We will help you resolve your conflict peacefully but do not expect any military aid from us.

UK to Soviet Union
We have lost all interest in maintaining this so called 'Cold War'. With the unlimited potential that lies before us in these gate our squabble over ideological views seems to be trite in comparison.

UK to Commonwealth Nations
It seems to me that we have an advantage in that in our little family of nations so many of us have been blessed with the gates. As such we should take full advantage of that blessing. I propose that we coordinate our discovers beyond the gates and share our experiences for the greater benefit of all.

Colonization Corps
They are formed of +- of my military. Once our initial scouts from beyond the gate return they will begin training for combat in that environment. They will then quickly move in and set up a forward base from which they will begin to investigate for signs of civilization.

The French populace is a first world country, and is in no need of aid whatsoever - this is merely a crude attempt by you to attempt to make us functionally hand you money to bribe the French.
We expected better of you, and move that the Red Cross instead focuses it's efforts on zones like Chad, which are in dire need of assistance instead of being a personal slush-fund for Monaco.

News reports appearing in numerous areas of the world show Imam Abdul Aalee arriving in Darfur and greeting the demoralized population with his trademark words of wisdom.

"President Sadat has sent several top advisers along with the beloved Imam Abdul Aalee to Darfur to begin efforts towards peace and stability in the region. Aalee has been a beacon of hope, appearing during the chaos of Gate Day and leading the various peoples of northern Africa in the recovery efforts that followed. When interviewed about the relief efforts happening in Darfur, President Sadat said, 'There is no doubt in my mind that the man capable of defusing the situation in Darfur is Abdul Aalee. He has proven to be more than capable in the six short years that I have had the pleasure of knowing him.'"

We fully intend to respect our recent peace treaty with Israel, but a mutual defense pact seems to be a big leap having only ended the hostilities between our countries a few years ago. It is clear enough that France does not need the assistance, and in any case, it is clearly too politisied a situation to justify a non-polical agency such as the Red Cross to be involved in - Monaco would certainly gain benefits from such an arrangement, and so I move to declare Monaco in a conflict of intrest - we request they either step down as president of the Red Cross, or withdraw the bill.

We would like to apologise for our confrontational tone - we hope it does not harm relations, as we simply do not intend to permit the Red Cross to become another political tool. The United Nations To All Powers
A motion has been introduced by the Independent Democracy of Poland to place a vote before the Security Council, demanding the removal of Soviet forces from Polish territory. The Soviet delegation has immediately vetoed this resolution, declaring that the Soviet Union has not made any movement into Poland. As evidence of this, they have cited a 1981 treaty with the government-in-exile of the People's Republic of Poland that transferred Terespol to the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, a treaty not acknowledged by the I.D.P. or most nations. As such, we have instead remanded the following to the General Council as a non-binding resolution:

The General Assembly,

Having recognized the continuing occupation of Terespol by elements of the Soviet Army, and the refusal of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics to heed international calls to withdraw from these lands or extend official recognition to the government of the Independent Democracy of Poland, the General Assembly:

1. Requires the removal of Soviet Army forces from the environs of Terespol.

2. Furthermore requires the removal of all Soviet Army forces from all lands within the territory of Poland as established by the Soviet Union in 1945 and 1951.

3. Calls upon the Soviet Union to recognize the new government of Poland, and withdraw their support for the People's Republic of Poland shadow government that remains in Moscow.

Voting will continue throughout the year (2 turns), unless a majority is attained before this time.

Unfortunately, we cannot act directly against the Soviet Union, as such action would likely lead to a direct action against Germany and the likely escalation of the conflict to where the NATO treaty would be activated, greatly increasing the risk of nuclear exchange. I can speak only for Darfur as of now. I recommend we have diplomatic officials try to get a look into the conflict in Chad so we have more insight to make an informed decision about how best to deal with the situation there. Chad is quite the powder keg and has several involved parties, so we have to be careful there. For now, a peacekeeping force would be useful to protect civilians while we contact the factions involved in the Chad conflict.

As for Darfur, economic aid would be most useful for helping to establish infrastructure to prevent fighting over resources. Military aid for peacekeeping could also be helpful, but would be put to better use in Chad. Egypt will be footing most of the bill, have no fear, but we will always accept goodwill from friendly countries.

As president, I long for a cohesive populace that works together. In sending this message I hope it is clear to you that we are willing to listen to what you have to say and find a solution. Finland to USSR:

The president makes the trip to Moscow to meet with the Soviet leadership, go hunting, take a sauna, drink some vodka and bring the well wishes and greetings of the Finnish people as well as what amounts to the following message:

In the current political climate, and considering the continuing Western cultural and political push into Europe most prominently featured in Poland, we have decided to direct more of our economic aims towards trade with the USSR.

However, due to the current precarious situation with the Gate, and with it remaining a risk to our territorial integrity as well as leading to a place as of yet completely unknown, we are somewhat troubled. We are unable to accept any real help from you in securing and exploring it, and unwilling to resort to any western aid as they would seek to grab the benefits for themselves.

We would like to ask for your opinion on us instead turning to a third option - controlling the exploration and exploitation of this resource ourselves but using resources pooled together by the Nordic Council. We would give them a stake in the matter at first, but the end result would be their lesser reliance on the West and the US markets and greater need to cooperate with us and the East. We would be glad to use the expected economic growth to support our true friend, the USSR, as well as lead the other Scandinavian nations to become a powerful buffer to NATO ambitions, if you were to agree to this and perhaps direct some economic aid to... shall we say, rebuild Northern Finland from the damages suffered on Gate Day.

The estrangement of the UK from the US bides well for the possibility of breaking West Europe off from the capitalistic yoke. This could be a subtle first step to that goal.

Finland to the Nordic Council:

((OOC: Iceland, you mean?))
Finland again stresses the fact that there wouldn't be any military cooperation or obligations, only economic and scientific work on the Gate. Finland will be attempting to attain Soviet permission for this cooperation beforehand, to avoid any unwanted tensions.

Finland to USA:

The Gate in our territory continues to trouble our national sovereignty.

Currently, we are in a problematic situation - we're barely managing to rebuild the damages from the Gate Day, and are woefully underequipped and underfinanced to begin actually studying the Gate itself and exploring what's beyond to secure our territorial integrity. The Soviet Union is willing to offer help, but of course with a catch - it would come with certain subtle obligations that would mean the potential wealth of the Gate would be drained Eastward. We're certainly interested in attaining a secure enough position to begin leaning West ourselves, you only need to look at our history with the USSR to see that, but we cannot do that within our current geopolitical situation. We have hopes that the Gate would allow us to eventually join the European community and seek closer ties to the US, but that can only happen if we can develop it.

We would like to ask for you to send us a minor aid package for rebuilding Northern Finland. The Soviets will see it as an attempt to, after the military situation has calmed down, begin trying to attain political influence in Finland - they cannot afford to be seen as ones to escalate the matter further now that everyone has backed down, nor can they afford to alienate us so easily now that we have potential value as an ally, so their only option will be to match your offer. End result would be enough funding for us to start developing the Gate without troublesome obligations to the Bear.

Rest assured that we will pay back our debts - we were the only ones to pay you back the rebuilding loans of 1928-1930, even through two World Wars. We paid the Russians our reparations after the war. Finland does not default.

If we had any silverstone to export at the moment we would do so gladly, unfortunately we don't appear to have any surplus. ((I think that we haven't started out with any silverstone since we have yet to explore the Gate in game. Although I could be wrong.))

What do you think about creating a more lasting alliance? As two up and coming military powers, we could become a formidable power bloc in our own right. If we announced an alliance, I think we'd have more then sufficient clout to make the nations of the world, both Western and Soviet, sit up and take notice. What do you say?

USSR

With the western world polarized against you, it seems like you could use a few more allies.

Both Peru and Columbia have active communist insurgencies. With a little push from a friendly neighbor, they could be installed in power.

If you were willing to give our nuclear weapons program a little boost, we could make sure that happens. A small peace-keeping force will be used to protect key civilian area's from smaller threats that may emerge.

Representatives will be send to meet with the main factions, and assess the situation. We'll try to find out what goals the various groups have, as well as ensuring the fighting is as bloodless as possible. You start sending what people you can through the gate, but as noted in the colonization rules sending entire populations will take a while.

The first people through the gate soon have a makeshift camp up. The planet they have found themselves is dry and dusty. Small grass like plants cover the ground which in this area is comprised of gentle hills. In the distance your scouts can see a large body of water, although they can't tell if it’s a sea, an ocean, or just a large lake.

To New Zealand
Your exploration team comes out on what is immediately recognizable as an island. And not a particularly big one. It is covered with rich vegetation none of which seem to be harmful. Your fighter plane makes a short flight through the, but only manages to make a very cursory map of about 200 KM out from the portal before it runs out of fuel and has to head back to base. All it sees is more islands.

To Independent Democracy of Poland
Your exploration teams report back that the other side of the gate opens onto an ice field. They begin establishing a small base camp, and await further orders.

To the United Kingdom
Your scouts come out on what they soon determine to be a large island covered in an alien jungle. After setting up a forward base they quickly scout the entire island and report no signs of civilization.

To Greater Egypt
Your initial teams report the gate appears to open onto a large landmass. They can't tell if it’s a very large island or a true continent from just their initial reconnaissance. The gate itself is located a few miles back from the ocean, and is surrounded by some type of jungle. They don't see anything of particular interest like silverstone deposits or civilization either ruined or not.

When the New Zealand head of security arrives in Moscow, he finds a small, discreet delegation waiting for him. They transport him to the Kremlin, where Premier Kovalenko is waiting for him.

Darfur and South Sudanese Insurgents to Greater Egypt
The representatives of the Darfur region are willing to listen, and are more than willing to accept economic aid to help mitigate the effects of the famine and improve the economy of the region.

The South Sudanese tribes have had a much longer history of antagonism between the upper and lower Sudan, and having just exchanged one government founded on Islamic privileges for another, several decline to meet out of hand. Those that do are suspicious, and are less concerned about economic guarantees than they are political guarantees of autonomy and self-determination.

The Soviet Union
Premier Kovalenko,

Lets be frank. We do not like you, you do not like us, this is most likely unchangeable. However that does not mean we cannot coexist without bloodshed. Here is my proposal:

You do not want to fight a multiple front war, and if you push this you will have to deal with both us and the Mujaheddin. I suggest we put our collective egos behind us. Let us make the area around the gate you currently occupy a DMZ, and host a joint Polish/Soviet research base in the area.

This saves both of us face, on an issues where our political supporters will not allow either of us to lose.

If you agree to this, then we will allow unlimited military access on two conditions- no permanent or semi-permanent bases on Polish soil, they can only pass through. Second, we need 72 hour notice before any military forces move through Polish territory. If we don't have that, then we wouldn't be able to tell the difference between an invasion and troop movement.

This deal makes you look good and merciful to the world at large, and you don't have to actually give up anything.

We hope we can come to a peaceful agreement.

Your exploration teams move through the gate and began exploring the area. They quickly discover a few things. First wherever you have ended up you are on an island. It is a fairly good sized island and the gate is near the center, but an island none the less. Second whatever planet this is you are in the north. They aren't biologists and they aren't earth plants, but its cold and the trees and plants simply look adapted to cold to your exploration teams. This is confirmed when your some scouts reach the north shore and actually see the ice in the distance. Either that or this planet is going through an ice age.

To Israel
Your team steps through the portal into an area that seems remarkably similiar to where they came from. The land is fairly dry, although there is some type of alien grass along with a few larger plants, and covered in hills.

To Monaco
Your explorers move through the gate and find themselves at sea. Looking around they soon spot a landmass of some sort in the distance. After landing they soon discover that it is either the tip of a very large island or a continent. And appears to be covered in tropical forests.

OOC: Only +++++ can go through a gate per turn total. And that includes multiple countries. So if you send all that France isn't really going to be sending enough to set up a base with, much less a colony.

To the Chinese Federation
Your explorers come out in some kind of temperate alien forest. After setting up a base camp they make a few scouting trips into the nearby areas before reporting back, but don't find anything of immediate interest, or threat.

OOC: EoT date hasn't been decided yet.

To India
Your exploration team comes out in a desert. It is a hard wind baked plane. To your east you can see a mountain range and to yourwest a sea of some kind. Your expeditionary force starts setting up a base camp while awaiting orders as to where to try and survey first.

To South Korea
Your surveyors come out on an ice field. They set up a base camp and await word from the planes. The planes photos show ice streching in all directions, but while it continues for as far as the planes traveled in the other directions in the south the ice eventually ends in an ocean.

To Poland
Your tests detect nothing harmful to human life, or any non earth life at all, which is not surprising given the conditions on the other side of the portal.

OOC: Like I said in the OOC exploration just entered a state of flux again, so some of you won't get replies until that's worked out. Which should be tomorrow.

Gate Exploration
How many resources does france want to send through the gate? If they don't mind I'll provide it all myself.

As to the colony, that is my top priority. All my resources go into getting it build. There is plenty of wood around, so we'll see about building the colony with that. I'm also going to need electricity, food, water, and medicine.

Electricity will be a mix of wind, solar and tidal power. We'll look for nearby hills or mountains to build wind turbines on. For solar power we're going to need flat land with a clear view of the sky. Tidal power will obviously be established by the coastline.

Food should be easy enough. It is a tropical forest. We'll carefully check all the plants for edibility, and search for wildlife to eat. I expect to find fruit and meat, bread or another staple food is going to need to be imported from earth and grown.

Water can probably be found in the sea or rivers. Hopefully the rivers would be fresher. Either way we'll check the salt levels and for other chemicals, and build a filter to purify it for drinking.

I expect some of the tropical plants will function as medicines, but it'll take some serious research to identify which ones. For now we'll import and grow what we can from earth.

To the United Kingdom
The soldiers quickly burn away a small clearing and prepare it for use as a helipad.

To New Zealand
On their flights your planes mostly see many small islands of no particular interest, but a few things stand out. The first is a large island surrounded by an impressive coral reef, which your scouts imaginatively name Coral Island. The others are more interesting. On two different islands your planes spot what look like ruins from the air.

OOC: Ships are going to be slightly harder to get through than planes. The alien side of the gate opens out onto the island, so unless your ships are small enough to be carried over land you're going to need to dig out a canal down to the ocean.

To ASEAN
Along the way to the water your scouts stumble across something interesting. There is a large chasm that splits the earth slightly off to the side of the path the scouts have been following. Deciding to take a short detour the scouts look around and discover something amazing, gold. There are veins of gold all throughout the chasm just sitting exposed to view. They estimate that there is enough here to open a very profitable mine with a bit of investment. Marking the site on their maps the scouts continue on their way. Once at the water they quickly determine that is likely either a sea or an ocean of some kind as it is composed of salt water. Deciding to try and locate a source of fresh water they explore along the coast for a way and discover a large stream emptying into the sea. Although not enough to supply a full sized settlement it is a definite welcome to supplement your colonies water supplies as they find a more permanent source. You gain ++ t. econ to building up the colony

To Israel
Your teams run across a few interesting things. One team heads a north and spots what looks like some kind of small ruined building in the distance. Another goes east and finds a large granite mound, which proves to have little of interest beyond a commanding view of the area. Another wanders around for a while and finally stumbles across the entrance to a cave, breaking out their spelunking gear they venture inside and find a vast cavern filled with a subterranean ecosystem around a small lake. Taking a few samples they quickly realize that the fungus growing around the edges of the like has an serious effect on him biology. Merely handling it is enough to get a contact high. None of the team attempts to see what more prolonged exposure would do. But they take a few samples back to camp. And meanwhile the last exploration team has found what appears to be a large coal deposit, which could be well worth exploiting if enough mining equipment was brought in.

To Poland
Searching the immediate area your teams find a few interesting features while they are looking for a secure site. First is what appears to be an island sticking up through the ice. Closer examination reveals several copper deposits large enough to be worth mining even over the ice. Second your team finds what appears to be an enormous excavation. Someone has dug down into the ice exposing another island. Your team is cautious, but by all appearances whoever dug the mile wide pit is long gone, by hundreds of years if not millennia.

To Monaco
OOC: Mistral what does France say?

Unfortunately you appear to have had the bad luck of getting here during the monsoon season. Soon torrential rains are pouring down at regular intervals. It isn't quite so bad as it might be, but it makes everyone fairly miserable and work on the colony is going at a slower pace. As if to make up for though your exploration teams have found several edible plants between the downpours. Of them two are exceptionally interesting. One is something like a cross between a huge banana and an orange. The other is somewhat disgusting looking on the outside but proves to contain a protein that does an excellent imitation of beef. Both prove edible and nutritious, and the scouts believe that there are enough to actually provide export back to earth for sale or domestic use if plantations were established to harvest them.

To South Korea
The ice appears to be about a kilometer deep where the gate is located. Neither the core sample nor atmospheric tests reveal anything poisonous. However the sonar does locate two thing of interest. One large cavern in the ice a few kilometers to the west and a smaller one about half a kilometer beyond that, which appear to have some kind of structures in them. Scouts sent in that direction report a series of tunnels which appear likely to lead down to the caverns.

Presuming the ruin Islands are about a hundred kilometers away, boats are sent to them - fairly small dingy type boats, of course. Maybe a yacht. If possible, helicopters are sent out.

Meanwhile, the large numbers of troops are used as manual labour in the digging of the canal, hopefully represented as a mil -> econ stat investment.

Moreover, presuming Helicopters can reach the islands, they find a nearby island or one of the islands themselves with a small flat zone, use napalm if necessary to clear it of vegetation, and set down there. They then construct a field base, which is minor enough, given it would be done hundreds or thousands of times in a real military campaign, and use that as a temporary base to send out exploration teams in helicopters to the ruin islands, where they are set down and explore before returning. Needless to say, Napalm and suchlike are not used on the Ruin islands.

That is wonderful news, and we look forward to your assistance.

South Sudan to Greater Egypt
Autonomy and a political separation of South Sudan from the Sudanese administration of Khartoum seems to be the generally-voiced consensus, but such a thing might threaten to alienate the Sudanese and Islamist supporters of the government in the nation. The reduction of the role of Islam in the government also seems to be popular; many are suspicious of the Imam, merely for his role as both a leader of the faith and governance in the nation. Some call for outright independence, but this is a minority view, and the cost of such an action would likely outweigh that of other measures.

The First International Silverstone Engineering Conference - fragment of opening speech

I am here to propose to you today that we need to balance the risks and opportunities of advanced Silverstone technology. We should avoid the risks and, insofar as it is possible, realize the opportunities. We should not needlessly confront entirely unnecessary dangers. To achieve these goals, we must plan wisely and rationally. We should not act in fear and panic, or give in to technophobia; but neither should we act in blind enthusiasm. We should respect the interests of all parties with a stake in the Future of Humanity. We must try to ensure that the benefits of advanced technologies accrue to as many individuals as possible, rather than being restricted to a few. We must try to avoid, as much as possible, violent conflicts using these technologies; and we must prevent massive destructive capability from falling into the hands of individuals. We should think through these issues before, not after, it is too late to do anything about them... "

Short applause; and the Red Cross representative start speaking:

"We are currently faced with the greatest challenge of humanity. The whole new worlds are at stake. The magnitude of the work is incomparable to any project know to humanity.Let me remind the space program. International cooperation has been a fundamental part of NASA since the agency was formed in 1958. Over the years, NASA has signed more than 1,000 agreements with more than 100 countries and international organizations. This cooperation ranges from shared scientific data and joint research to construction of space hardware and orbital rendezvous, like the Apollo-Soyuz docking in 1975.. and we know that worlds opened in Gate Day are more potent than space program. The very possibility of rapid colonization can provide a solution to two most important problems of humankind - hunger and overpopulation..

Finally the chief of CERN stated goal of conferency:

"The NASA been pointed out by my colleague. I, as a representative of Swiss Technocracy and CERN program propose to build on NASA experiance and technology. We know how searching the whole world to gain Silverstone is awfully expensive. We propose to construction of satellites and appropriate mobile launchers, which allow us to scan world after world..and automatically transmit important data like weather conditions, activity of the biosphere or potential deposits of Silverstone.."

To New Zealand
After successfully establishing a small base your exploration teams explore the ruins. Both sites have nearly completely been taken over by vegetation and there is little left to tell who or what originally built them, but in broken and decaying machines in both sites your teams find small amounts of Silverstone. When everything is pooled together you gain a total of ++++ Silverstone.

OOC: You could take back your military, that would however mean that construction of the canal and airbase will be pretty much halted.

To Israel
Your mining team begins harvesting coal, but it will be some time before they have enough ready for a shipment back through the gate.

OOC: Basically I will need to process your EoT to see how much exactly you end up putting in first to see how big a mine you make.

To Finland
There are a few smaller islands nearby, but nothing else within the range of your small boats. Of more interest is that during your exploration of the island your teams find several large deposits of what appear to be titanium bearing rock. Elsewhere on the island several large stands of trees, or at least plants that look close enough to trees for the name to work for you non biologists. These tress have "wood" that is extremely tough. Easily the equivalent of basic iron alloys. Your initial teams believe it has many potential uses in construction once proper facilities are set up to harvest and process it.

To ASEAN
Your scientists and soldiers continue exploring, but it will take some time to perform the detailed surveys necessary to find anything not immediately obvious.

To South Korea
The tunnels turn out to be fairly straight forward. Literally they are just straight ramps leading down into the ice. A few crevices splitting the ice and one place where the tunnel makes a sharp descent prove somewhat treacherous, but otherwise it is not long before your explorers have reached the cavities. They prove to be obviously artificial caverns carved out of the ice. The larger one has several smaller rooms carved out and appears to have been used as a base. The smaller one is connected to the first by a short tunnel, but is otherwise just an empty room, with a large number of shelves. Your scientists guess it was some kind of storage area. The contents of the caverns prove less than informative. Most of what was once here has been removed leaving behind only the larger structural supports. Scattered across the caverns are a good bit of debris and broken machinery. Most of them appear useless, but several have large caches of Silverstone for unknown purposes. In total your teams find +++ Silverstone.

To India
As your explorers mount an expedition towards the mountains they survey the surrounding terrain along the way. During their sweep they happen upon some ruins. Most of the ruins are worn to the point of unrecognizable, but several of the machines have small pockets of Silverstone still in them. Closer examination reveals that they were also time of mining machine, and while the machines themselves are broken beyond repair the mine they were digging still has exposed minerals. Namely diamonds as several diamond veins are exposed in the rock. A much more thorough search reveals a small secure storage area with several mounds of diamonds in what used to be storage crates. You gain + Silverstone and ++ t. econ worth of diamonds. And also the diamond mine although it will take investment and equipment in order to bring it to production.

Besides that your teams find little of interest in the soil samples they test.

To the Independent Democracy of Poland
In the excavation site the teams find evidence of a massive mining complex. Huge derelict machines lie where they've fallen. And structures lie cracked and desolate. At least part of what was being mined is still there. A vast deposit of some unknown element. Initial tests show it to be superb conductor, better than any other naturally occurring element known to man. Further excitement occurs when one of the scouts finds a large storage structure which proves to be filled with a huge amount of Silverstone. You gain +++++ Silverstone.

To the United Kingdom
Helicopter flights reveal the presence of many more islands. Two in particular stand out. One is fairly level medium sized island with considerable beaches and an excellent harbor not far from the gate island. Your scouts immediately label as a prime vacation spot. The second is much less welcoming. A massive volcano thrusts up through the ocean. It is active and provides a prime location to study both volcanism and the colonies unusual creatures that live near or, in a few extreme cases, in the lava.

We have no worry about falling behind the Soviets. Their poisonus communism destroys their people and their land. It will not be long until it destroys any apparent advantage they have. However, we are interested in increasing the speed at which we explore other worlds. We would be willing to cooperate with your own explorations efforts or to use your gate for them.

Forgive me, as I sit here I am not entirely certain about how to respond. It seems upon reading your message that you are threatening us. Worse, it seems you are threatening us with your own ruination and slavery to Moscow. You openly admit to courting both sides of the Iron Curtain and you expect this to result in money from us? We refuse.

We will give you a real offer. One that sane people could agree upon. We will ensure your soverignty against Soviet Agression. We will invest in your nation for purposes of redevelopment. We will provide low or no interest loans and aid without expectation of payment. In exchange you will do your darnest to ensure that your people and land are not taken away from you and that the morally and ideologically bankrupt Soviet philosophy does not expand past its current borders.

If you instead think that Moscow is a better choice it is your right as a soverign nation to seek out their help. But if you do then on your own head be it. When their candidates hold every office after their sham elections you will have only yourself to blame.

South Korea
At this time we are unable to lease any equipment with military applications. Currently, the threat of Soviet agression means that should any significant US military commitments be made to gate explorations would result in a possible escalation of conflict.

However, we would be willing to cooperate with you in gate exploration under the auspices of our own Department of Interplanatary Affairs' efforts.

Your explorers find three things of note in their travels. First in the jungle to the north your teams happen across a massive swath of alien trees which are bright red. the initial scouts immediately take to calling it blood forest, and the name is apt as tests reveal that the alien vegetation contains and incredibly powerful and swift acting neurotoxin, which the alien trees are apparently using as a sap analog. In the other direction your southern teams find what appears to be a large deposit of titanium bearing rock, which appears to be readily minable and within easy transportation distance of the gate. Meanwhile on the ocean your scouts have taken a few small boats out and spotted huge shoals of fish. And not just small fish, but huge alien leviathans that they're very glad decided not to try and eat them. After catching a few of the smaller ones the teams run some tests and determine that they quite healthy. With the building of a harbor this could prove to be a major fishing ground.

Turn 2

July 1, 1985

Brazil Blitzkriegs Bolivia

With the economy in collapse and a government historically tainted by mismanagement and human rights violations, newly-elected Bolivian President Paz Estenssoro has faced an uphill struggle as he gradually began to clean up the state of the government and bring Bolivia into the global economy as a functioning and free nation. However, the precarious peace in the nation was shattered not by internal opposition, but by external forces, when Brazilian armed forces on exercise in Amazonias crossed the border without warning in a massive assault, acting under sealed orders. The Brazilian army, utilizing new silverstone-enhanced weapons and with both surprise and numerical superiority on their side, swept forward in a combined-arms blitz as advance paratrooper elements secured several key airports and logistical chokepoints, followed up by mobile ground forces to secure the territory. Within two weeks, the eastern and northern lowlands were effectively lost to the enemy. The unprepared Bolivian Army was immediately mobilized when the first elements were caught crossing the border, but the sheer speed of the Brazilian advance would cause lead elements to be caught and eliminated piece-meal, and a desperate last-ditch defense at the gates of La Paz would simply be entirely overwhelmed with minimal Brazilian losses. Within the month, Bolivia had effectively ceased to exist as a coherent nation. Most of the government was either captured or killed, including President Estenssoro, who was shot attempting to resist capture. The only senior government official who remains both alive and outside of Brazilian hands is Minister of Planning Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada, who disappeared during the fall of La Paz before resurfacing in Buenos Aires over a month later. With Argentine blessings, he has formed a new government in exile, and called upon all true Bolivians to rise up and overthrow the Brazilian conquerers, a call many in war-torn Bolivia are more than willing to answer.

The sheer speed and audacity of the invasion, without any warning or diplomatic preparation, has sent shockwaves throughout all of Latin America. Attempts by Brazil to claim that Bolivian forces were identified crossing the border in preparation for a Bolivian invasion of Amazonias province are generally regarded as farcical, and almost all nations in the area have condemned the invasion. Perhaps ironically, the invasion has also hastened a thaw in relations between historical enemies Chile and Argentina: these two nations have met with plenipotentiaries from Paraguay, Uruguay, and Andean Community nations Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Colombia in Buenos Aires, and taken the lead in demanding an immediate Brazilian withdrawal from Bolivia.

Tunisia in Turmoil
Pro Islamic movements are beginning to gain significant traction Tunisia. Violent anti government riots are forming as the movements demand that the current government step down and allow the institution of an Islamic government which can begin improving relations with the Islamic Renaissance occuring in Greater Egypt. In response the ruling party has issued statements decrying Greater Egypt for supporting these movements and fomenting rebellion inside a foreign power. Borders have already been closed across Tunisia and martial law has been declared while the situation plays out.

Banana-Oranges
The first real improvements arriving from the gateways are finally being seen by the common people as silverstone fueled innovations begin leaving government labs and reaching the common citizen. Possibly the most obvious of these are the new Banana-Oranges a small round fruit which looks like and orange, has the texture of a banana, and tastes like both has been approved for human consumption by the Monaco health board and is being exported from the joint Monaco/France gate. It has already proved vastly popular.

Have the research teams finished any projects of importance yet? While Egypt doesn't have much in terms of RES resources to spare, we'd be interested in purchasing schematics for our own production once you have some completed designs.
Exploration [GM-Level]
Have my fishermen managed to get their hands on any of the larger alien fish? Any special properties?

I'm interested in exploring Blood Forest if I have the resources to do it. The cool stuff is always surrounded by a deadly obstacle (:smalltongue:). Would I be able to carefully explore that area if my RES take precautions and wear protective suits and such, or do I have to actually research something to be able to explore the forest? If I don't need special research, I'll have + RES and - ESP equipped with protective gear to handle the neurotoxins, taking samples of the "sap" and trees for research while continuing to explore the Blood Forest and other jungle to the north for the usual: Silverstone, other gates, other civilization, anything of note. If they aren't equipped to survive the forest yet, I'll do something with these stats during the next exploration.

The other half of the team (- RES, - ESP) will continue to scout the south jungle where we found the titanium, going deeper into the jungle and places they haven't explored yet.

I'd like the last - RES to do a flyover in some aircraft to get an idea of the general geography. It's not as detailed as scouting teams of agents and researchers, but they might be able to spot something major like other civilization, a gate, or areas of interest. It'd be useful knowing more about the land they're on, how big it is, and if there are other landmasses as well.

I don't know if I can do this in exploration, but the + MIL, + t. ECO, and + p. ECO will go towards incorporating the titanium resources in the southern portion of the jungle into our colony's network and establishing some mining operations. Though I'd like to use Silverstone for this, so extra bonus could go to something else at EOT if - Silverstone boosts more than these stats.

Summary:
Flyover: - Researchers
Southern Jungle: - Researchers, - Espionage teams
Northern Jungle: + Researchers, - Espionage teams (if they have the equipment available to handle the Blood Forest)
Titanium-like Deposits: + MIL, + p. ECO, + t. ECO, - Silverstone

Silverstone: Did I use + or - at EOT and did the bonuses bleed over into some of the projects Earth-side?

We are fully aware of this, and are concerned by Brazil's unilateral actions as well. While acting outwardly at this initial juncture may cause Brazil to simply react in a knee-jerk manner, we will approach them private and ask that they cease their actions.

USSR to Brazil
We must ask that you cease your invasion of Bolivia at once. There is extreme concern on our part that your actions will only result in an excuse for American intervention in South America as they have already done in Grenada only two years before, which would not only result in the dissolution of your government, but the loss of all Soviet influence in Colombia and Peru. We ask you this not because of our desire to stop your ambitions, but because, in this, you have effectively united the entire world against you.

United Nations to All Nations

Perhaps our efforts to make the world a better place could be taken into consideration when you come up with a price for the blueprints. Also, we would appreciate a quote of how much it will cost to actually construct the devices as that and the price of the blueprints will both factor into the total cost of the devices. What exactly do the mobile launchers do?

OOC: Unfortunately most of my resources aren't tangible. It's mostly Morale and WO which isn't useful through the gates. So the few tangible resources I have go towards exploring and Darfur for now. Assuming there are no ill intentions in the establishment of these facilities, the government of Egypt will welcome them into our country. "Trusted allies, we require your help. Last season our nation was attacked by foreign agents. We lost a great deal of money to their treachery."

"However, this was not a normal operation . We were not targeted because of our wealth, or minimal security. We know this because the culprits took no money during the operation. They only destroyed it. They gained nothing from the attack. Their intention was simply to stop us from using our money."

"Why, you ask? The culprit must have thought we would use our money to damage them somehow. But in the last season, we made barely any public references to our spending plans. The only thing we said, is that we might send some money to France."

"France has very few enemies, and only one who hates them enough to attack us like this. New Zealand. They launched the attack on our nation. I believe it would be worth investigating them, to obtain proof of this. If we are right, you can take your fair share, when we sue them in the international courts. Exploration Reports Turn 2

ASEAN
As your scouts continue to explore the immediate surroundings they discover two things of import. The first is an outcropping of crystal which they literally stumble across. At first your explorers don't even see them and only when one of them trips and examines the area more closely are the crystals spotted. At first your explorers simply think that they are exceptionally transparent, but some experimentation shows that the crystals are actually rerouting light through their outer layers hiding their interiors. The second discovery of note is another gate. Located to the east of your initial position it is definitive proof that gates can exist on planets besides Earth.

Brazil
Your exploration teams find themselves stepping out of the gate onto a large arid plain. After some exploration of the surrounding area they find three things of interest. One is a patch of ground covered by long vine like plants. Close examination shows that the vines actually have something of the qualities of plastic. Second in a large ravine your scouts find a small deposit of titanium bearing ores. And the third is actually near the gate, but it isn't until a team of explorers returning to resupply literally trip over it that it is found. It is an outcropping of crystal which appears to be completely transparent, however some experimentation shows that the crystals are actually rerouting light through their outer layers hiding their interiors.

Chinese Federation
Your exploration teams find themselves in the foothills of a mountain range. To the north they can just make out glacial slopes, and to the south a fairly verdant looking forest. As they spread out over the surrounding terrain they discover several interesting things. The first is where a cliff has broken away to reveal a large deposit of copper. The second is down in the forest where your explorers have discovered a slow moving six legged herbivore, which after some testing proves to be an excellent source of meat. The third is up in the mountains. Almost underneath one of the glaciers your teams find a small deposit of uranium ore. And finally while exploring a small mesa to the west your explorers trip over what turns out to be an outcropping of nearly invisible crystals. At first your explorers think that they are merely extraordinarily transparent, however some experimentation shows that the crystals are actually rerouting light through their outer layers hiding their interiors.

Swiss Technocracy
Your explorers find themselves in a temperate forest. After a very thorough exploration of the surrounding area they return with a comprehensive report.First your explorers have examined the trees of this forest, and have found that one particular species has wood that is both light, and extremely durable. They believe that uses for it could be found in construction. In the far north your explorers have found a massive tower sticking out of the ground. It's original purpose is long since worn away, but your explorers do find a large cache of silverstone in its base. [++++ silverstone]. Also in the tower are large quantities of refined gold bricks stacked for whatever reason. A substantial boost to your treasury. Even further north your explorers reach a range of mountains which prove to contain small deposits of uranium ore. And in the southwest your explorers have found that the forest gives way to a arid plain. In it they have found outcroppings of crystal which at first are merely extraordinarily transparent, however some experimentation shows that the crystals are actually rerouting light through their outer layers hiding their interiors.

Unfortunately not everything the explorers have found is good. Some of them have disturbed a species of aggressive insects. Large swarms of the predatory things are now attacking all your outposts. Current suppression efforts are fairly successful, but the extra supplies necessary to counter the swarms are taking up a large portion of your gate's capacity. (Gate capacity is reduced to ++++)

Greater Egypt
Your fishermen will need bigger boats to go after the real leviathans, but so far their catches don't appear to have anything particularly noteworthy other than being large and numerous.

Your exploration teams carefully venture further into the forest and discover that deep in the jungle are a small species of mammal like creatures that have six legs, a bushy tail, and are bright pink from feeding off the blood trees. They also have a highly toxic bite from that same source, as several of your explorers finds out to their extreme detriment. The emergency medical supplies to keep them alive has extracted a substantial chunk from your budget. Your explorers to the south don't find anything of particular note. Your scientists in the planes do come back with exciting news. Far to the north east across a large strait they have found another gateway. What is extremely exciting for them is that it is three or four times larger than the gateway that led here.

You used + silverstone at EoT.

India
Any more resources you send through now won't take affect until next turn's EoT.

Your scouts have found two things of note. A small set of ruins that proves to contain nothing particularly informative as to who actually built the, but does have a small amount of silverstone in a small building. [+ silverstone] And across a small snow capped mountain to the north west another gateway.

Japan
Your exploration teams find that the other side of the gateway opens out onto water. After pushing some boats through they begin surveying the surrounding area. They find several things of note. The first is that this ocean is filled with alien fish, and testing indicates that they are both edible and tasty. Fishing would likely be quite profitable here. Second they have made landfall on a landmass to the southwest and found several patches of land where oil is actually seeping up from below the surface. It could potentially be a valuable oil field. In their surveys across the ocean itself they have also found that far to the north east another gateway rears out of the water. And even further north on several glaciers they have found ancient ruins that contain a large quantity of silverstone. [+++ silverstone]

Poland
Terespol
Your scientists determine that they are in the extreme north of this planet, while the Warsaw gates open on the extreme south. However the atmosphere on this gate is notably drier than the one through Warsaw gate. It's possible that this is simple local weather differences, but your scientists estimate it as somewhat unlikely. They'd have to take stellar readings at both sites and compare them to be absolutely certain though.

Warsaw Gate
With only the limited resources sent through to them the establishment of your copper mines amid the extreme cold is going slowly. However in the north your exploration teams have found several islands with temperate climates that would be more hospitable for a permanent base. The islands are also home to several alien species of animals and plants. One animal in particular is of interest. It is a large four legged reptilian beast that secretes a substance which proves to have remarkable adhesive properties.

South Korea
As it happens fishing is particularly good right now. A vast school of fish, which proves to be edible, is migrating past at he moment. For however long the migration lasts your explorers will have a ready supply of food easing the burden on you to send more supplies through. This increases the efficiency of your logistics through the gates. (You gain an effective gate capacity of +++++ +).

Exploring further south across the water your explorers find several islands. One of which proves to contain trace quantities of a highly conductive substance. Your researchers are already planning the experiments they will be able to complete with it.

United Kingdom
Your scientists surveys find another large island to the north. On it a near dormant volcano spills lave flows into the sea. Volcanically it is not particularly exciting with quite a few similiar sites being readily available on earth, but the superb climate and harmless local wildlife and amazing views make it another prime vacation spot.

Finland
OOC: Ok quick correction. Your gate got moved while we were finishing the maps. It has ended up near the equator of this planet not in the north. And the island is closer to a continent in size.

Across a small but spectacular mountain range on the other side of the island your explorers find another gateway.

Israel
Exploring to the north your explorers stumble across a vast bay which offers a spectacular view of the ice arctic ice glaciers even further to the north. Slightly inland from the bay your explorers find another gateway jutting out of a small forest.

Monaco
While they do find several rivers your surveys don't find anything that immediately sticks out as the perfect place to site a dam. As they are all either relatively small or located in somewhat inconvenient locations. Analysis of the film recovered from the flights do show some interesting looking fields of plants further to the south. A small expedition to the area finds several small fields of plants with nearly black leaves. This would mostly be left to the botanists except that several of the scientists who collected samples received small shocks, suggesting that the plants were actually generating electricity somehow.

New Zealand
Further exploration uncovers another smaller set of ruins almost completely hidden by foliage. Among the decaying machines your explorers find the small amounts of silverstone they have come to recognize as always being present in such finds. [+ silverstone] Of somewhat more significance far to the west of the initial gate your explorers have found a second gateway on a large island.

We very, very strongly urge you to see that Brazil does not carry through with any threat of the use of nuclear weapons. There are contingencies in our defense plans that authorize full retaliation on all priority targets in the event of such an action and independent operators may take any sign of aggression as sufficient cause.. Moreover, allegations of your support of Brazil would be seen as equivalent to your complicity by the public.

Please, and I emphasis this with all the ability I can convey in writing, understand this is not a threat or anything of the sort. It is a warning of the actions that my people and government would demand if a nuclear weapon were to successfully detonate on American soil. We will do all in our power to prevent this.

USA to Brazil
You have perhaps taken leave of your sense? You lack projection capability to do anything but ruin your own lands if you tried. Moreover, we have spent more money then your country has ever produced on defenses against this sort of attack. All you will manage to do is turn the whole world against you.

USA open statement
At this time, the government of Brazil has refused all attempts at peaceful resolution to the current crisis. They have at this time threatened the use of nuclear weapons against all attempts to support their victims.

Australia

We have a few proposals for you.

The situation in Bolivia is threatening, and we, the Pacific powers, must start preparations for we do not know the next move of the Brazilian government. We in Japan don't sadly have the resources to help the Bolivian people against their oppressors, and neither do you, the Australians. Together, we could at least hold off any aggressors.

So we propose an alliance, covering military, counterespionage and economical cooperation.

Counterespionage, it would be a lot easier if we cooperate. If we both agree to send a few of our agents to the other signatory nation to help fend off hostile agents, we could significantly boost our counterespionage capabilities.

We'd also like to suggest economical cooperation. We offer you the chance to investigate the Gate near our coastline. You can even create a colony inside, if you wish. In return, we would like you to share all maps you make of the area, and also get a cut of the profits you gain by importing resources from the Gate. Exact details can be discussed later.

By military cooperation we by no means mean anything offensive. What we had in mind is a purely defensive alliance, to discourage potential attackers. If we both agreed to help each other in case one of us gets attacked, the chances that we get attacked in the first place are much smaller.

All of the above can be discussed, although I believe this offer is beneficial enough to both of us as it is now.

Unlike the Americans would have you believe, Brazil is entirely open to peaceful negotiations. And we are willing to leave Bolivia peaceably, once our mission has been accomplished.

It appears that the U.S. has ulterior motives. In fact they threatened so send troops before offering any reasonable peace agreement. As such we are willing to negotiate with the Soviet Union and The Andean-Platinean Pact to secure a mutually agreeable end to the conflict, once our presence in Bolivia is no longer necessary.

You really do play stupid well.

We'll ask one more time. Where is the nuke you stole from us? The one you planned to hand over to the Mujhadeen?

Brazil to the USSR
We received a message from an anonymous informant that there was a plot by the CIA to steal a nuclear weapon, sneak it into Boliva and then fly it to the U.S. for safe keeping. Eventually they'd then hand over to the mujhadeen. They would then use the weapon to strike at the Soviet Union. If the plot failed, we would be implicated instead of the U.S.

At first we didn't believe the tip, it sounded to far fetched like something out of a James Bond film. Although, we did put all of our nuclear installations on high alert.

Less then a month later, while transferring a warhead to and ICBM, one of the new ones you had been helping us build, we discovered that the warhead was a fake, and that the real one was missing.

Having no real lead on the location of the warhead, we followed the anonymous tip, and had military units open sealed contingency orders for invading Bolivia. We'd hoped to find the nuke before it had left Bolivia, but we haven't found it yet. Either it's still in Bolivia to be found, it's already left, or it was never in Bolivia to begin with.

The amount of pressure that the Americans are putting on us for an immediate withdrawal leads us to believe that the nuke hasn't yet left the country. Unfortunately it's just conjecture, our informant hasn't given us any new information.

We didn't tell you because we were not entirely certain that you were not involved. Since we'd asked for your help with out ICBM program, you would have had more access to our nuclear program then any other nation. And the stolen nuke could have as easily been used by you to strike Washington.

We're ready to withdraw from Bolivia, but not until we have either recovered the nuke, or are satisfied that it isn't there to be found.

Brazil to the Andean-Platinean Pact, Bolivian GiE
Unacceptable.

It is important that we find what we are looking for. More important then the sovereignty of Bolivia. More important then the lives of a thousands soldiers, or even millions. Important enough to risk everything.

We will not back down, to you, the U.S., or anyone until we have found it.

We are willing to make concessions. Once the Bolivian officials have been interrogated, and we are sure that they we not involved in the conspiracy, we are willing to release them.

We are willing to be reasonable, don't make this any more unpleasant then it has to be.

It will a bit more time to go over it carefully enough to add another level of detail to their maps.

To ASEAN
Your scouts find themselves on medium sized island covered in a small temperate forest. The island itself doesn't appear to have anything very interesting on it besides the gate. Far to the south they can make out what look like glaciers, as well as other islands in the surrounding ocean.

OOC: Yes the bad weather cleared up on the first turn. It was just to give people an opportunity to change their country's backgrounds more drastically.

To the United Kingdom
Your civilians take full advantage of the freedom, but their amateur explorations turn up nothing that your professional scouts haven't already found. Your helicopters don't see anything, but they do pick up some very faint signals that don't seem to be ordinary static.

US Open Statement
The government of Brazil has finally explained their actions. They have stated that US agents stole a nuclear weapon from them and hid it in Bolivia.

Ignoring the fact if we had done such a thing we wouldn't have had to hide it anywhere in the region, that with the same supposed commitment of resources we could have done whatever this was supposed to have accomplished without tipping anyone off, and that we have no need to steel an outdated piece of junk when we have more than enough nuclear weapons to blanket the entire surface area of the Earth, including water area, in nuclear explosions several times...

There is still no proof besides the most baseless hearsay, no announcement to the international community until after it became clear that Brazilian aggression would not be tolerated, and, this bears emphasizing, is still not justification for violating the sovereign territory of another nation!

We state for the last time, ALL Brazilian armed forces are to withdraw behind their pre-attack borders or they will be expelled by force.

we urge you to withdraw from bolivia, you can not hope to win a war with the U.S even with the aid of nuclear weapons. perhaps if you withdraw to pre war boundrys you and the U.S can conduct a joint investigation to hopefully sort out this mess without violence. i hope you will atleast consider a withdrawal

Andean-Platinean Pact, Bolivian GiE to Brazil
"We are unreasonable? You have invaded a neighbor based on supposition and an excuse that only occurred because of your own incompetence with securing your nuclear arms program, itself an entirely unnecessary and destabilizing force in the region. That even assumes it actually occurred and is not some post-facto justification that you came up with only after the extent of our disgust for your actions became clear.

"You will release all Bolivian nationals in your custody and withdraw from Bolivia immediately, or it will be war."

USSR to Brazil
"That is interesting. We find it...unlikely that the American CIA would have been involved in such a matter, especially given the availability of smaller and more effective technologies in America that could have been used to mimic the Brazilian strategic arsenal. In addition, were a nuclear weapon to have been used by the Mujaheddin, it is only natural that our first instinct would have been to blame the United States, rather than Brazil. Still, the possibility that this theft may have been attempted in order to place the blame on American agents, and that they targeted Brazil due to existing infiltration networks cannot be dismissed casually. For that matter, they may have intended to provoke this precise response. There is no reason to have transshipped the warhead through Bolivia; there is a plethora of Brazilian ports where one more large container would have been unnoticed, and either Peru, Argentina, or Uruguay would have been more practical for moving a large warhead if they wanted to avoid Brazilian patrols."

USSR Open Statement
"The Soviet Union has heard from Brazil and the United States, and is inclined to accept the Brazilian statement at face value. We believe that Brazil believes that the American CIA was involved, but in turn, we also acknowledge that the American arguments against their involvement indicates that the truth of the matter is that this was an attempt to pin the blame on the capitalist dogs of Washington. The idea that the free workers of the world would be so easily gulled is farcical, and we will not be so fooled. It is clear that this incident occurred in order to instigate a war either in South America or worldwide. If this is the case, it is clear they have succeeded; the invasion of Bolivia and the posturing of the West is enough to show this fact.

"We call upon Brazil to withdraw from Bolivia immediately. In their place, we wish to propose, before the UN Security Council, a peacekeeping and arms investigations team be established by the United Nations to enter Bolivia and continue this investigation with a multinational mandate. The United States will recuse itself from this team due to the accusations against it, simply until these accusations can be confirmed or denied, but their NATO allies will be permitted to detach available forces to join the investigation."

Brazil Open Statement

Despite the the United States lack luster assertions that they had nothing to do with the disappearance, the Brazilian Government is still not convinced that they were not involved. We aren't sure what sort of Machiavellian machinations they have in store for South America, but we for one refuse to be a helpless pawn.

Brazil is willing to withdraw troops from Bolivia, but not immediately as the U.S. has demanded. Brazilian troops will remain in place to make sure that the weapon, if it is in Bolivia, is not allowed to exit the country. We are willing to take out our troops once U.N. forces are in place, but not before.

Furthermore, Brazil will not allow any U.S. troops to enter into Bolivia under any agreement. We will not let the U.S. get the chance to remove the evidence of their wrongdoing.

Brazil to the USSRThat does make sense...

We're at a loss. Who would benefit from raising tensions between you and the U.S, and a war in South America? Arms dealers maybe? But what arms-dealer would have the resources to pull something like this off? Brazil isn't particularly well liked, but as far as we know we don't have any enemies that would be capable of this.

Brazil to the Bolivian GiE

We are willing to hand over the officials now, if that is what you wish. Since at the moment the likelihood of them abetting the plotters is low.

But if we hand them over before making sure that they were not involved with the plot we have no way of knowing if the government of Bolivia was involved, or if Bolivia was a scapegoat.

If we can make sure that you were not involved, we'd be willing to pay reparations for the damages the war has caused. If you want them home safe now, we're willing to oblige you but Bolivia will never see a cent of reparation money.

Andean-Platinean Pact

What would you have had us do? Risk a nuclear weapon falling into terrorist hands and kick starting a nuclear war? It may have been supposition, but it was the only thing we had to act on, and we couldn't very well sit on our hands if there was even a remote chance of securing the weapon.

We grow tired of defending ourselves from your mudslinging. We don't have to answer to you.

USA Open Statement
It is becoming clear to us that the government of Brazil may not be a legitimate government of the Brazilian people. Their recent warmongering, numerous allegations of human rights violations, and now the audacity to dictate terms to those of their victims who will not take their bull lying down!

Brazil does not dictate policy for the UN. Brazil does not dictate policy for the United States. They do not dictate policy for the nations of the Andean-Planetian Pact and the most certainly don not dictate terms to Bolivia!

If Brazil does not remove it troops from Bolivia immediately and return ALL prisoners of war the United States will put forth a resolution to the United Nations to authorize humanitarian military intervention in Brazil. There can be no good faith negotiations until Brazil no longer holds the people and officials of Bolivia hostage.

If Brazil is willing to once again act like a nation and not a terrorist group the United States will be the first to open peaceful discourse. Until then, all their statements are the demands of criminals.

So right now I have +++++ t. stats over on this side of the gate plus my + permanent economy, I think. Do these +++++ t. stats stay on this side or do I have to, like... send them again to continue exploring and using them next turn? But once I have +++ p. stats on this side of the gate, temporary stats don't have to be resent every turn because this side will be self-sufficient, yes? And anything I send through now won't be available to use until next turn.

Okay, onto the exploring. Correct me if my assumption is wrong, but I'm guessing all the stuff on the peninsula to the... southeastish of the original gate has been explored. That is, all that's attached to this main chunk of land.

The scientists in the planes will continue mapping out uncharted land to the north while all my agents and scientists on land will be working together with a more thorough search of the north. I'd like for my scientists to, if it's safe, try and extract some samples from the dangerous trees for analysis. I'd like to see if they can find any use for the stuff in the blood forest. Also, do they think the pink squirrels have any useful properties or do they think it's best to ignore them for now? The land team, the large majority of my explorers, will continue a more thorough search towards the north and beyond. Silverstone and resources would be useful in getting this base up and running, if they can find any.

To Tsukikoj
Temporary stats are exactly that, temporary. So they have to be resent every turn. Essentially the stats that are producing those stats are on the Earth side of the gate. And the gate represents a choke point through which only +++++ stats can be sent a turn. Producing a colony doesn't let you keep them on the gate side, because that would make them permanent stats on this side. What it does do is give you more resources to use over there.

For instance without a colony you can only spend 5 on the far side of the gate.

With a colony worth +++ econ you can spend 8 letting you explore more quickly.

The whole self sufficient thing wasn't really working so I dropped it. Now you simply want to build colonies to get around the hard stat limit that can be sent through a gate per turn.

Officially, the Maronites cannot be seen to be supporting the Israeli government with a public declaration of support; this circumstance has not changed since 1982. However, if you were to...again enter our nation and clean out some of these Amal and PLO nests of insurgents, we would issue instructions to the Lebanese military not to interfere.

Syria to Israel
It is only natural for us to attempt to guarantee the sovereignty of the Shi'a faith in Lebanon, especially against the dictatorship of the Christian minority, and to safeguard their security by providing them with the means to defend themselves. If the Lebanese government refuses to permit them a say in the government and forces them to these extreme measures, the fault lies with the government in Beirut.

Saudi Arabia to Israel, Greater Egypt
We do not recognize Israel as a sovereign nation, and will continue to refuse recognition until Israel agrees to a complete withdrawal from their occupied territories in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as guarantees of Palestinian sovereignty and recognition of the Palestine Liberation Organization as representative of the Palestinian people. If Israel claims to desire peace in the Middle East, they can start by cleaning up their own house first, before chastising their neighbors.

Turn 3
January 1986

Bolvia
Un peacekeepers move into Bolivia and Brazil forces pull out ahead of them. Initial investigations turn up no evidence of any plot to steal Brazil's nuclear weapons. They do however find that huge numbers of former soldiers and government officials have been transported into Brazil for unknown reasons. The UN investigation is about to look into this further when something of far greater import happens.

Washington D.C.
All is calm in Washington D.C. in the early morning hours. Politicians meet in discrete buildings street vendors serve their wares. And tourists gawk at the monuments. And then it all goes white. In an instant 2 million people are dead. And for the survivors lucky, or unlucky, enough to be outside the blast zone the mushroom cloud rising over their ashes stood as a grim monument to their deaths.

Several hour later a broadcast was sent from an disclosed location. In it the president of the United States stood looking for more rumpled than he ever had before, and with his right arm hanging limply in a sling, an injury which was later disclosed to have occurred when the evacuating Marine One was hurled into the ground by the shockwave.

"My fellow Americans, citizens of the world. On this day America has been grievously wounded. Hurt by a weapon of horrendous capabilities. I will tell you the truth. We do not know who planted the bomb which destroyed millions of our citizens. We do not know, but we will find out. And we do know where to start. By order of the surviving members of Congress and my authority as President on this day the United States of America declares war on Brazil. All Brazilian forces have 24 hours to surrender before we find out what you know one way or another."

"However, we ask that the American government show moderation, even in the face of this loss unprecedented in a time of peace. There is no sign yet of who could have done this thing, and to throw around accusations cavalierly, even in this time of great destruction, will only let the guilty go unpunished while the innocent suffer. We ask that they retract their accusations against Brazil pending a full investigation of the cause of this atrocity."

"We have no idea what to think. Our opinion was that the government of Brazil was in no way willing to upset the world in this manner, but in the same fashion, we were unaware of their plans to invade Bolivia due to the theft of a Brazilian nuclear weapon until well after these plans were activated.
