Exotic Locales — Inspiration for Architecture and Geography

A architectural/cartographic/geographic offshoot of the "Dungeons and Dreamboats" (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=197824) thread!

I am endlessly fascinated with architecture, maps and landscapes; can't see a picture of a strange building without imagining it as a temple to some forgotten god … and then imagining what sort of world such a building would be located in.

In that vein, this thread is meant to provide inspiration for world-builders. Found some concept art of an alien chasm or fantastic city? A map with a bit of particularly evocative coastline? A real-world example of bizarro architecture? A photo of your favorite landmark? Post 'em! Anything to get the brain whirring.

Keep everything in spoiler tags, if you would. Can't think of any other rules at the moment, but I'm certainly open to suggestions.

I honestly have no idea. :smallfrown: I generally just save all such things I run across to a giant folder, so very little I have is properly named or organized. My Google-fu isn't turning up much either. There's an outside chance I might have gotten it from the "Dungeons and Dreamboats" thread (because of the girl with the gun/claw dealio)?

Had no idea the first one was a Magic card either, heh.

One or two days ago, I somewhere saw a picture like these, with a singular mountain that was entirely covered by a city. It most resembled the last one in shape but in brown tones and I think higher than wide. It also was rather photo-like in style and not that obviously a painting. Though it might also have been a photo with some post processing done.

And if I recall correctly that chandelier is made up of at least one of every bone in the human body excluding the ear drum bones.

Those are actually images of the Church in Kutna Hora about 30min outside of Prague in the Czech Republic. If you ever get the opportunity to visit it's worth the short bus ride from Prague. There's a fascinating story about why there are so many bones at the church but you'll have to go visit to find out.

Is it really called "castle" anywhere? :smallconfused: That's a part of one of the mine's chapels (St. Kinga's I believe).

Note that I'm not really nitpicking, but curious about that bit.

Actually I think you're correct. There does seem to be a separate Wieliczka Castle though. I was mostly going off of what my Polish inlaws have told me; they all refer to it as a castle, probably because the mines and the castle are associated.
