The title says it all.
Edit: I probably should have mentioned the relationships must be cannon.
Also if you think someone will ask you where

If we are goin' shipping, Beast Boy and Raven: The Joker and the Stoic.

Watson and Holmes, of course. Especially in Sherlock. They're adorable together.

Doesn't that show make a point that neither is gay at least once an episode? Unless they really changed the tune of the show in that last season (America doesn't get it for another couple months), I don't think they really count as romantic, or maybe I'm just not getting it, that happens fairly often.

In any case, I've often claimed that in all the fiction I've read or watched there have only been 3 couples I've actually cared about as romances. All others, if they didn't end up together I probably wouldn't care, or be happier since that means less of the story would be focused around the least interesting filler that seems to choke up 90% of otherwise entertaining stories.

But as I said there are 3 that I thought worked as romantic couples:
Lucius Vorenus and Niobe from Rome
Bigby and Snow from Fables
Rory and Amy Pond from Doctor Who.

However, if we're completely ignoring the romance and just going by favorite couples who happen to be romantically involved hands down the only response I can give is Harley and Mr J. There antics never cease to amuse me, and sicken me, often at the same time.

Lawrence and Horo from Spice and Wolf.
Locke and Celes from Final Fantasy 6.
Nanoha and Fate from the Mahou Shojo Lyrical Nanoha series.
Subaru and Tea, same series.
Sagara and Kaname from Full Metal Panic.

So yeah, mostly animu and mango. Bonus points for it all being canon, though.

I remember once talking with a friend about shippers, and how stupid many of their ideas are. "Why all this talk about Ichigo and Rukia? There is nothing there and it's totaly obvious that he's getting Orihime... wait!"

For me, it would be these two:

I'll definitely support Tengu's suggestions of Lawrence and Horo and Sousuke and Kaname. Some of my favorite characters and they make two of my favorite couples.

Beyond them I really love:
Sumika and Ushio (Sasameki Koto)
Sarasa and Seriho (Chatting at the Amber Teahouse)
Mari and Akko (Girl Friends)
Kyon and Haruhi (Everything Haruhi Suzumiya)

And I think this is it for my very favorite couples and all six are not only adorable together but help make the other character more interesting in their own right. That is not to say that there aren't other couples I like, these are just my six favorites.

If we're going into Touhou, which I generally don't since I consider it far too subjective for this kind of discussions, I have a few more.

Specially:
Meiling and Sakuya
Keine and Mokou
Yukari and Yuyuko

All have interesting themes and contrasts and ways of playing off each other. And few love stories are as epic as Yukari and Yuyuko if you do ship them together.

IrnBruAddict

While not a massive Yuyuko/Yukari fan, I will say "Two by this side, three by the other side" was one of the best fanbooks I've read on the touhou girls.

Also like:
Reimu and Cirno
Reimu and Alice
Reimu and Yuuka
Reimu and Nue
Reimu and Remilia
Reimu and Sanae
Reimu and another Reimu

(I think I'm starting to see a pattern here)

I also like Meiling/Sakuya but too much of it is violent and not in character. I like it more http://safebooru.org//images/145/718dbfe8603170fbcf2983bef253b89f72789b38.jpg?14437 1 than the usual knife to the head stuff sometimes shown.

Touhou couples that are popular tend to be portrayed in quite a variety of different manners. However, Sakuya and Meiling when portrayed romantic tend to focus on Sakuya being kind of bad at intimacy and Meiling looking up to how cool she is on the surface. They're just cute together like that.

Forget it - Jubilee and myself!

Well, I certainly can't fault your choice of favourite X-Man...

Don't recognise Snow Queen though, as I feel I should...

Speaking of the X-Men, I have to say, while not a favourite, I rather like the dynamic between Emma Frost and Cyclops.

I find it much better than between him and Jean. (Partially because Emma was a character in her own right looong before, whereas Jean was a designated "love-interest" character from the start, and one who, even coming into the X-Men in the nineties, I never thought had truly shaken that.)

Heck, the fact I kinda like Cyke, like at all, these days is something of an achievement!

I kinda liked the Doctor and River Song, actually.

And, of course, one would be remiss without mentioning Spike and Rarity.

As much in defence of poor Spike as anything else, because if you can't get a happy ending in My Little Pony of all places, there is something inherently wrong in the universe. (And there aren't nearly enough younger guy/older girl parings in fiction - if I have to be subjected to romance, at least give me a reasonable variety...)

I am, though, in general, not a particular romance fan, though not against it, especially if it adds an interesting dynamic, or, better yet, it is a comedy goldmine. If it can make me laugh, it's golden.

Otherwise, I'm kinda neutral on pairings/shipping/romances, so long as it's not cliche and is at least a bit different.

Scratch the desert part and nobody is able to tell which arc are you referring to. All of Bleach's fights take place in white corridors and other easy-to-draw backgrounds. And when they don't, Kubo goes full lazy and stops drawing a background altogether.

Donnie Darko and Gretchen - I've not seen many romances and this is the closest, plus he was willing to kill and die for her, and did both, though not necessarily in that order.

Angel and Otonoashi - Man I felt so depressed when the series ended, then I saw the kicker, and it made it all better. A nice genuine relationship.

I've really not seen many romances that I've cared about.

Jzadek
2012-01-24, 07:47 PM
Well, the first that comes to mind would be Starbuck and Apollo in the new BSG. While they're not exactly a couple, they have one of the best written and most depressingly screwed up romantic arcs I've read.
Also, Wash and Zoe from Firefly have to be up there, simply because they're written by Whedon, and even more brilliantly than usual. And in The Wire, Jimmy McNulty and his love for himself.

Exactly my thought. I actually skipped 4 chapters of the fight of Chad in Soul Society to see if they were still at it, and they were. But Soul Society at least still had progress and a goal. Things went slowly, but they went somewhere. But after that, not so much, and it really felt like the plot was done and it was just more pages added without any idea where the manga should be going. Which lots of people tell me was in fact the case.

Comet the Super-Horse is a fictional character that appears in comic books published by DC Comics. Comet first appeared in Action Comics #292 in October 1962, and was created by Jim Mooney.

Comet was one of a series of super-powered animals, including Streaky the Supercat and Beppo the Supermonkey, that were popular in DC's comics of the 1960s. Comet was Supergirl's pet horse and, while in his human form as Bill Starr, her brief boyfriend. Comet also had a brief romance with Lois Lane in her comic book.
When I first read about it (in comic book forums, blogs etc), I thought it was just one of those tired old jokes similar to the ones about Batman and Robin; but no, this is canon.

I can usually take or leave most canon pairings to some degree, but those two get a pass.

Good call. I may even have to change my stance to 4 fictional romances that I find interesting.

Edit: Upon consideration, no. Mostly because I realized that watching Gomez reaction if they broke up would be hilarious for me.

My number one favourite non imaginary fictional couple ever, of course, is Kafuka Fuura and Nozomu Itoshiki from Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.

That video is one of my favourite scene ever, and maybe one of my favourite 'meet cute' I've ever seen. It... counts as meet cute, right?

After that... maybe CC/Lelouch from code geass.

Then maybe Araragi/Senjougahara from Bakemonogatari, which someone had posted a pic early.

Well, I certainly can't fault your choice of favourite X-Man...

Don't recognise Snow Queen though, as I feel I should...

Speaking of the X-Men, I have to say, while not a favourite, I rather like the dynamic between Emma Frost and Cyclops.

Actually, you shouldn't. She was a minor Wolverine character, who appeared in just one issue. A mutant assassin that was probably killed by her own bomb. I thought she was cool - she had that really weird narrative speach pattern. "Do you like Grimm fairy tales? Because I can tell you that this is a grim very tale. In the end, someone dies. And I get to live happily ever after".

Now, about Emma and Cyke - see, I kind of liked Scott/Jean, and Emma was cool in Generation X... sometimes. But now that I look at them, I think they deserve each other.

Ah. Could well have been before I started reading, then (I didn't get Wolverine until Gen X finished).

Also, I definately agree on the Jubilee/Synch - certainly more than with Angelo (which a) seemed to happen off-screen and b) seemed to be rather forced to me) or worse, that dreadful side-character they paired her with in her short-lived solo series (Shooter or something).

Yeah, there is a 60's TV couple we know didn't have separate beds.

Actually, they had many separate beds. They just liked the variety for their wild passionate lovemaking. I just hope they were more inventive in the sack than they were when it came to clothing. Did morticia EVER wear anything but the same dress design?

...it's canon? When did this happen?

Orihime is canonically in love with Ichigo (i.e. not merely attracted or nervous around him, genuinely in love.) He has yet to respond in kind.

Way before your time. Her issue was long before start of Generation X. I think it was before Jubilee was first introduced, too, though I'm not sure about that.
Now, about Jubilee's boyfriends... Angelo was her friend. Just friend. She had a crush on Synch, and Angelo had a (former) girlfriend - Torres, I think. And also, Chuck Austen was the worst X-Men writer ever.
The boy in Kirkman's series was Shane Shooter, and they never got closer than "well, since we're here on the couch, wanna make out?" - and then Wolverine decided to come visit. Wolverine's arrival was the funniest part of that comic!

Yes, that'll be way before my time! (I got into the X-Men when the 1990s animated series came out, and picked up Gen X - 'cos it had Jubes in it - at about issue 13, I think.)

Now, about Jubilee's boyfriends... Angelo was her friend. Just friend. She had a crush on Synch, and Angelo had a (former) girlfriend - Torres, I think.

Yes, which was why that her comment after his death (in the issue they were trying to bury him) with "I wish I could have gotten naked with Angelo" struck me as possibly the most innane, weird, out-of-character - and actually kinda creepy - thing that any writer has ever had Jubilee say.

And also, Chuck Austen was the worst X-Men writer ever.

Having googled his name, saw one list of "top" five moments, and realised that not only did I recognise them all but had thought they mostly were at the time, I would have to concur. Especially since he killed Angelo, and off-screen and pointlessly to boot.

Let us, then, draw a veil over that era...

The boy in Kirkman's series was Shane Shooter, and they never got closer than "well, since we're here on the couch, wanna make out?" - and then Wolverine decided to come visit. Wolverine's arrival was the funniest part of that comic!

I thought that seemed well out of character for Jubes too... That series had so many problems, sadly, and I so wanted it to succeed; though I think the biggest was taking Jubilee away from any familiar context.

Exactly! Two shameless manipulators with same "Ends justify the odds" motive going. Good riddance, I say.

Eh, I like Cyclops as he is these days, and the older I get, the more I like Frosty... Cyke even has something of a sense of humour nowadays, even if it is a bit gallows.

That said, I've never been convinced on the "heroes don't kill" thing at the very best of times, given how it's a conceit that is almost exclusive to the superhero genera. I mean, Luke Skywalker kills people all the time (in fact, one might say he probably has among the highest body count of all protagonists - I doubt even Wolvie's killed a million people) and so do virtually all fantasy and sci-fi heroes, even the ones with quite remarkably excessive powers, so the more ruthless edge I actually like. That, however, is a debate for another thread.

(I must say, even as a fan of Wolverine (second favourite after Jubilee), I'm not sold on the recent split - partly because the whole "X-Men are actually acting as heroes for once" thing I was really enjoying - even after watching Wolverine and the X-Men on DVD. I mean, Logan, you bein' a hypocrite much? Do as I say, not as I do? Mind you, nothing was quite as bad as Jubilee being a Vampire - I mean, my favourite character of, like, anything being turned into the one thing I hate above all others (aside from the Shi-Ar and Gladiator), so...)

So, yeah, I kinda like Cyke and Frosty - it falls in the criterion of "it makes me laugh", which is my most important one.

I'm a Zutara shipper... so, I'll stop with my list now. As for that "I'll kill you slowly" comment, that's blatant author-insert. The writers were really irritated by the Zutara ship, so they tried firing nukes at it.

Since they thought hiring Shymalan was a good idea, I don't give their opinions much credit.

@ Bastian Weaver:
Can you be more cryptic? I mean, who the heck is going to recognize a couple from an obscure 80's cartoon, except me and only because I have an 80's massive-crossover fancomic?

Ofc, given that most of you list couples I've never heard of, I'm prolly in the low range of nerd knowledge around here.

@ Technokami, on Orihime <3 Ichigo:
I didn't realize this isn't common knowledge. Orihime has had affection/curiosity/crush on Ichigo since like... pre-Soul Society. How would this possible generate "a firestorm" from readers just because it's grown to "genuine love"? If Ichigo hasn't responded to it, that's just status quo.

Personally I took it as a combination of ship-torpedoing and the fact that Katara was going through a really bad time emotionally in that point of season 3. She eventually gets over it enough to do a pretty good tag-team with Zuko in the finale, after all.

Also, I'm not one to deny chemistry, but I thought it was equally present in both sides of the main fan-imagined love triangle there. And much like the equivalent Harry Potter situation, I spent the whole series of arguments and ship wars bemused because I was like "have you watched how closely this show/novel series sticks to formula (or Star Wars, in HP's case)? Especially for romance? Do you really think they're not going to go with the obvious pairing?"

My favorite couples?

Scott Summers and Jean Grey, before the whole Phoenix saga and clone saga and everything else in the universe aligned to purposely break them up. Scott was willing to have a permanent telepathic connection to Jean Grey. Talk about commitment. And they were actually reasonable, responsible people before they started dying over and over.

Least favorite?

Wolverine and Jean Grey. He's old enough to be her great grandfather at least. Creepy.

To be fair, if you're going to raise the age thing, that's true of everyone Wolvie dates, and saying he can't date anyone, ever, is kinda harsh, even coming from my perspective. Age is just a number after all, and you're only as old as you feel.

Katara had always been the big sister of the group, and that dynamic was most evident in her relationship with Aang. With Saka, she switches between big sister and little sister. But with Aang it's always big sister big sister. When they forced romance on them, it was downright creepy for me, like watching incest. Sure, Aang always had that first-crush on Katara, but reciprocated? No.

Besides, he's a monk, a monk who's the last of his religion, and the Avatar. He was tailor-made to grow up to become an ascetic/celibate legendary hero who resurrects the Air Temples, the sacrifice all the more emotive because he was such a sprite in his youth. Now, no.

And then there's the blatant chemistry between Zuko and Katara. I'm not talking about taking kidnapping scenes out of context, I mean over the course of the 3 seasons. They just couldn't help it. If the authors even gave one nudge, it would have just spontaneously exploded into fireworks. But they decided to torpedo it to enforce the creepy Kataang.

You do realize, in SW, the original obvious pairing was Luke-Leia but then changed to Han-Leia?

Those Shyamalan-lovers missed a good thing when they torpedoed the USS Zutara.

-Blackthorne and Mariko's tragic, doomed-from-the-start love from Shogun
-Shadow and Laura from American Gods (so sweet and so sad at the same time)
-Charity and Michael from the Dresden Files
-Commissar Ciaphas Cain and Inquisitor Amberly Vail
-Cyrano de Bergerac and Roxanne
-Leonard and Pria from Big Bang Theory (didn't like Leonard/Penny so much the first time around, but they've both had a lot of character development since then so you never know)
-The two main characters from Forgetting Sarah Marchall, Jason Segel and the receptionist.... Man I'm horrible with name.
-Kate and Castle... Not totally official but I don't consider this shipping either.
-Tavi and..... huh.... his girlfriend from Codez Alera

Now some that I like a lot but were mentioned

-The girl who waited and the lone centurion
-Wash and Zoe
-Lucius Vorenus and Niobe (and Vorenus and Pullo's epic bromance)

Going to have to argue Ezio Auditore and Christina Vespucci. AC: Brotherhood certainly introduced some tragedy into that relationship. Then again, I'm not for romance, but I'm certain that what came out of it was worthy of a shed tear.

Anything that comes out of Katawa Shoujo. 'Nuff said.

I find the hilariously ignorant relationship between Dexter and Rita Morgan (IN THE NOVELS) to be one of the most entertaining things in fiction, period. Dexter is clueless on how a marriage should operate, and Rita is oblivious to Dexter's antics. Dexter is Delicious shows she's just as poorly informed on the even more fake personality of Brian, Dexter's brother. And of course, in Double Dexter, when she suspects he's cheating on her, and he's just as clueless as usual.

Lucius and Ivy from The Village.

Because of them that film is amongst my top three favorites. Everyone seems to hate it because they expect horror, but I love it for the romance.

It's not sexual, nor over the top, but shows what love is. A willingness to do anything for the other. They both face the 'boogyman' that they've been raised to fear above all things. For the other.

It's subtle, deep and intense.

This part brought tears to my eyes, though unless you've seen the whole thing it may not seem much. Basically throughout the film Lucius has been unwilling to tell Ivy (who is blind) his feelings, and has turned down offers by other village girls. It's here that Ivy basically risks her life to prove he does care about her.

No. I've seen the argument that this was a subtle true love before and all I can say is no. Because Ivy is freaking crazy based on that very scene. She pulls the equivalent of standing in front of an oncoming train just so that the guy she has a crush on is forced to risk his own life and rescue her. She was perfectly fine and safe if she just went down the cellar like the others, but no she decides to stand out for the monster to kill her. That is not love, that is suicidal mental illness and frankly one of the most deeply disturbing, manipulative, and selfish acts I can think of. The fact that I've seen so many people (alright only 3, but that's 3 too many) claim that this is love scares me to my very core in much the same way as people who claim that Edward and Belle or Romeo and Juliet are the most pure example of romance scares me.

Jayne and Vera.

Truly the best romance of the bunch.

Well, for many cartoons, I would agree that shipping has little, if any place. Many of them are meant for prepubescent children and have little if any intention of romantic or sexual connections between characters.
But for something like Avatar: The Last Airbender or Teen Titans, where the characters are of an age where such things occur and do in fact with other characters in the series, it makes as much sense as shipping any fictional characters in my opinion.

Weeeell....if you were going by that same metric of age-logic, that would be totally wrong, as, even propotionately, let alone in terms of actual years, that is a faaar bigger than the gap between Wolvie any member of the X-Men...

(In fact, I thought it was bad at 200 to 3000 years, - proportionately like Wolvie dating Jubilee - when eh first met her - but then I checked, and it's only 120 to 5000 years, which is a proportional different of over 41 times! Now how old would someone proportionaty forty times younger than Wolvie be...? Yikes.)

The only time I have ever had my life threatened by a shipper was when I told a Martha/Doctor fan I didn't think Martha had anything to offer the Doctor in any capacity.

I'm what you might call a professional shipper, and I'm involved in many fandoms, and honestly, the scariest shippers are the set-in-stone slash/yaoi shippers. I'm talking about those people who will ship any two male character that even bother to look at eachother, but are actually disgusted by the idea of het or femmeslash, and don't you dare ship their babies with a female even if it IS canon.

For me, best canon relationships are Han/Leia, Amy/Rory, Utena/Anthy.. off the top of my head. I'm sure there are more, but I don't preform well under pressure :smalltongue:

Yeah. Honestly, from what I've seen most aspects of yaoi are kinda creepy from its ideas about love, sexuality and gender to how its fans treat dissenting opinions. Now, I'll admit that what I've seen isn't a whole lot, but it's almost always been kinda creepy compared to het, femslash or original yuri.

Also, having just seen the show two days ago I have to say that Utena/Anthy is an interesting choice. I do see why, both from a romance perspective and from the perspective of it being interesting to analyze. I know that I really do want to dislike Anthy, but have a hard time of it, while liking Utena is rather easy.

And in news that don't relate to the post quoted, I have decided to follow Tengu's lead and add Nanoha and Fate to the list. Stories that don't have sex, romance or the life of homosexuals at the center are very rare, as are happily married homosexual couples. Nanoha and Fate are both of these making them more or less unique to my knowledge, as well as quite cute together.

On that note:

Ichigo/Rukia - Because **** logic, that's why. Shipping has nothing to do with logic. Logic dictates that you shouldn't care this much about fictitious characters. But here we are. Besides, the author's talking about how he has ten years worth of material left for Bleach. Ten. Years. At least. My odds are as good as any.

Shinji/Rei - No. No man. Don't even start with me. I'll openly admit that Shinji/Asuka is the better ship. I will stare you in the eye and admit that. But I will be damned if I give up on this ship, okay? This has become a personal vendetta now. This has become something born out of stubborn frustration. I will make this ship work or I will die trying.

Tenchi Muyo/Harem - There has only ever been one true harem anime in my heart. The king of harem animes. All other harem anime is but a pale reflection of it, a heartbroken plea at genius. And that is Tenchi Muyo. Except for OVA 3. Never talk to me about OVA 3. I will burn the nations of man to the ground not be happy if I ever have to watch OVA 3 again.

Sasha/Milla - In the vast underground sea that is Psychonauts shipping, this one stands out as my favorite.

Finn/Young PB - And this is what happens when you invest yourselves, kids. You just sit back, watch the ship go down, and suck on rum until you can't feel anymore.

Everyone/Everyone - But for all the bile and venom I give, this is closest to the truth. There is no 'one true pairing'. This town is big enough for the both of us. The truth is, I reckon a filly or fella' can do whatever the hell they want with shippin' long as they're pleasant enough about it. The internet is infinite. There is no limit to space. The good earth is rich, and can provide for us all. We can all live happily, live peacefully with one another. The very fact that we're so defensive about shipping cries out to the internal human desire for love and joy. Love isn't about oppression and retaliation, but freedom and forgiveness. It is always about having to say that you're sorry. Put down your arms. Open your minds and hearts to one another, and life can be a beautiful adventure.

What's the difference between it and a discussion of a live action television or film romantic couples? Both are just as fake as the former.

Or romance in novels and short stories. Or poetry. Or plays. It all gets down to how "good" the writers are, never mind what medium or genre it is.

I thought the status quo is that Ichigo has the hormones of a rock, and has not been interested in any of his female friends other than damsel-in-distress bait. If you want to get psychological, having his mother's death on his conscience made him develop an obsession with saving women from harm, but emotionally staying as far away from the ones he cares about as possible.

Shinji/Rei - No. No man. Don't even start with me. I'll openly admit that Shinji/Asuka is the better ship. I will stare you in the eye and admit that. But I will be damned if I give up on this ship, okay?

Likewise. I watched the series when the sci-fi channel showed it a few years back, and mercifully had looked in the internet and discovered about the ending, because if I'd seen that unprepared, I've have been extremely fragged off... It did, not, as they say, stand a very good comparision to Nadescio, which they showed at the same time, in my opinion; I thought Evangelion started good and then took a steady nose-dive towards the end... I'll have to look this rebuild thing up, then.

MLai
2012-01-30, 09:02 AM
Well, the reason I just said something so negative about Rebuild is because I watched the TV series and then that movie. While the TV series was F'ed up enough towards the end, the movie pretty much multiplies it by a factor of 10. The TV series was the director depressed. The movie was the director committed suicide and then risen from Hell to give us a guided tour.

So Rebuild is... the director no longer depressed and felt like doing a regular giant mecha show? Where ppl who we're depending on to save the Earth, actually show some balls and call of duty, and not become *** holes?

Nerd-o-rama
2012-01-30, 09:20 AM
More or less. It's still violently messed up in places, but thus far (they're two movies of four in and about 3/4-7/8 through remaking the original story) it is both a lot cooler of a spectacle, a lot better paced and lacking in Eva TV's obvious budget-stretching scenes and episodes, and has a much more steady character arc for everyone rather than the constant up-and-down of the 26 episode series. And it's still got all of the conspiracy-theorist-audience-trolling, too.

Frankly, if you're not an Asuka fan, there's no reason not to like it. I am an Asuka fan, and I still like it.

Then again, I liked the TV series and End of Evangelion, too, I just think the former could have afforded to be half as long.

So Rebuild is... the director no longer depressed and felt like doing a regular giant mecha show? Where ppl who we're depending on to save the Earth, actually show some balls and call of duty, and not become *** holes?

The whole point of Eva is to show how disturbed people involved in such situations would be, and that a troubled 14-year old tasked with having to save the world will not be a fearless hero. Rebuild cuts down on that, but it's still not a regular GUTS AND COURAGE super robot show. And good, because doing that with Eva would kill a lot of what makes it a fascinating, if deeply flawed show. Except the "deeply flawed" part doesn't apply to Rebuild anymore, seeing that Anno is no longer depressed and has infinite money at his disposal.

Anyway, go watch Rebuild. The second movie is better than anything I saw in the series, and one of the best mecha things I saw overall. And that's coming from someone who liked the show, and EoE. Except the last two episodes (apart from the alternate reality crayons and "congratulations"), which would probably suck much less if their budget wasn't cut.

But then, this thread is about couples. So, in Evangelion, we have...

But I still love EoE. Because God damn, End of Eva was spectacular. I mean that literally, it was an awe-inspiring spectacle. It was the amount of pure villainous hate that Anno put into the production mixed with such sweeping and grandiose apocalyptic imagery as has not been seen since the paintings of Bosch or Bruegel. This is the Book of Revelations animated, the meaning behind the symbology stripped bare for a psychotic orgy of ultraterrestrials, Freudian ritual, and subliminal torture. Let me just finish by saying this; watch Rebuild, and then see if anything looks familiar.

OK, I agree. Eva's ending, and EoE are praiseworthy because they do break your giant mecha anime expectations, and what is told is pretty much found nowhere else in anime before Eva. I was going to say in animation also, but then I remembered Pink Floyd The Wall. Ha, animation beat anime here.

And I don't really dislike EoE. Because while EVA's ending is depression told in self-absorbed monotone with squiggly crayons, EoE is depression told in gloriously psychedelic animation love (like The Wall). And I never cared much about the characters anyways so I don't care if they all end up in Kafkian hell. As long as they do it spectacularly (which EoE did manage).

All this discussion about Evangelion is interesting, but to bring it back to the original topic I'm going to say that there were no good relationships in it, everything involved abuse, self-loathing, or simple lack of emotional maturity to realize what the **** was going on.

I also would like to say that I forgot one of my favorite couples, Chell and the Companion Cube, they have a co-dependent relationship, but it is not parasitic or anything, just a very nice, healthy thing, right up until the end.

Yeah, I took a long time to come around to liking Luna, partially because I read book 5 and was introduced to her right around the time I had broken up with a girl who sincerely believed in all kinds of things that clearly didn't exist and so meeting Luna was like, "That crazy chick is in Harry Potter now, great", but in retrospect, Luna's fey-like outsiderness was a great mirror to Harry's own, and her ostricization was also very similar to Harry's social experiences. The last book was published before I was won over, but in the end, this ship really won me over with passion.

Oh, and if Avatar and Harry Potter spawned crazy pairing potentials/ideas, you should see Ben 10. I think every single pairing, canon or not, is weirder than the last.

Where does this idea of Harry Potter's "social ostracization" come from??? I see it around all the time but I don't get it. Just because someone has round glasses doesn't make him a nerd/geek/loner/ostracized.

1. Harry is the star jock.
2. Everybody respects Harry. He teaches magic and leads student opinion.
3. Has attractive female best friend.
4. Has girlfriend.
5. Regularly embarrasses the "school bully" without getting beaten up.

There's a reason Harry Potter can't wait to go to school every time. Home life sucks. But that does not equal "social ostracization." If a teenage is ultra-popular at school, but has a bad home life, so he runs to school/friends all the time, do we call him "socially ostracized"?

DiscipleofBob
2012-02-02, 09:20 AM
I think it's more Harry Potter is supposed to be the social outcast rather than actually is.

The whole beat up every day he's not in the wizarding world and wears glasses.

It's the classic story of ostracised boy rising to most popular kid in school... and then the series continues for 6 books and shows us just how horrible that experience makes a kid.

Nerd-o-rama
2012-02-02, 09:22 AM
Harry Potter has to deal with serious ups and downs in popularity, really. He starts off as a combination of celebrity and terminally confused clueless outsider, gets popular as a star jock, has to deal with repeated character assassination on top of actual assassination attempts, gets in a bitter rivalry with the Rich, Popular Bully that lasts all seven years, is stuck in an interminable quest that only he can really complete, his only two close friends aside, and generally never quite gets a complete handle on this whole "Wizard society" thing.

I wouldn't call him a social outcast, no, but between everything that happens to him and the way he views the world, it's clear he considers himself an outsider looking in, no matter how well he gets to know people. It's lonely being the Chosen One, especially in the middle books when he meets Luna and has to deal with his dead-serious responsibilities more than he has to deal with school. That's why Luna, perpetually an outsider herself, is a good perspective for him to meet right about then. Plus, their interactions are cute in their nonsensicality.

Or, more pessimistically, what DiscipleofBob said. Kid's got a screwed-up life.

And then after a series of time-travel shenanigans, the Daleks show up and just start killing Dr. Who several times over switching between several prominent British actors and personalities all the while overwhelming his "love interest" as well as the various villains with all the rapid Doctor changes. Eventually, the Doctor turned into Hugh Grant, much to the delight of the companion, but then the Doctor died again and turned into a woman.

Not just any woman. Joanna Lumley. (http://youtu.be/Do-wDPoC6GM?t=15m33s)
Who would have made an excellent Doctor.

Heh. I must watch it again, never got to the end of it.

Why would the Daleks have a Doctor fan club? And if they had one for the show, why would they care about any part of it but their own appearances?

Well...

Think about many fandoms you know. If faced with a being who had been the implacable foe of your entire species since literally before it existed and who you couldn't seem to effectively oppose any other way, wouldn't you be tempted to inflict such "supporters" on them out of spite?

This!

I will never complain about Draco Malfoy fangirls again. They're exactly what he deserves.

Minato and Kushina (from Naruto) seemed to have a healthy relationship going on... even if they both did suffer from a fatal case of being the parents of the heroic protagonist of a fantasy setting.

Come to think of it, if a couple has a healthy relationship in fiction, (at least)one of the following will apply:

1) One or both of them will die.
2) It turns out one of them is a psycho, a horrible demonic changeling or about to move away
3) It's the last episode.

Edit:That gave me an idea for the love story of the decade... that might not be about a psycho and a horrible demonic changeling falling in love, one of them suddenly moving away and ending even more suddenly with both of them dying.

I don't think Spike/Julia ever made the list for anyone's "fav romantic couples." Because yeah, the point of it was never to show a fully-rounded romance. Maybe it meant something to Spike and Julia (though I kind of doubt even that), but it didn't to the viewers. We mainly care about Spike; Julia is a catalyst.

For Spike it seemed more an obsession with something out of his past, and a symbol of something he's trying to fulfill, rather than a true romance. For Julia, well, she's a damsel who needed someone willing to help her out.

I agree. There are two reasons that make MGS so great:
1. It aspires to be the most cheesy, cliche-ridden action game and the most pretentious, navel-gazing story at once.
2. Hideo Kojima trolls the fanbase as much as possible so they will stop demanding new MGS titles and let him work on other stuff, but he also wants to make the games as good as possible so they will still bring him buckets of money.

Add these two facts together and you have one awesome series.

From the prologue of MGS2 teasing you to be able to play as Snake to having to roll in a barrel like an idiot in MGS4, almost all the silly, ridiculous and annoying parts of MGS are Kojima trolling. And I love him for that.

I always thought that Meryl died at the end of MGS1? That the Otacon-Snake brokeback ending was the official one?

Because if Meryl lived, then that means the Meryl-Snake ending must have been the official one... and then what happened? Did they break up? How come Snake didn't mention Meryl at all in MGS2? I thought he didn't because she's dead.

As for MGS... not to derail the discussion... I like the series for about the reasons Tengu mentioned but Meryl/Johnny was still kind of stupid... it worked well enough but it would never be among my favorite romantic couples. Heck, Ocelot would have a better chance to make it among those if we talk about the series.

Meryl ending is canon, they broke up, then Snake and Otacon got together and became a two-man NGO, is the gist of it I got.

I think what happened is that they went with Ambiguous Ending in MGS2 (since Otacon survives in both endings) and decided to bring Meryl back in 4 because 4 is made up entirely of "well, why the hell not? Throw it in."

Alternatively: we knew Meryl Ending was canon all along because Snake has his infinite ammo bandanna at the end of MGS2.

Perhaps I am. It's just that conflict and drama sell, so fictional stories often apply them to the relationships. I mean, who wants to watch a show/movie/etc. where couples are all happy? ... I do.

Also, Metal Gear is awesome. Both the game play and story. Such attention to detail and memorable characters, though I don't think it's particularly romantic.

Nanoha and Fate are the main characters of the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. Welkin and Alicia are the main characters of Valkyria Chronicles. Setsuna and Konoka are the main couple found in Mahou Sensei Negima. Sumi and Kina are the main characters of Wife and Wife and Hayase and Komugi are their neighbours. Iono and Eto and Freshé and Togato are all from Iono the Fanatics. Letty and Tsumugi are the main characters of The Miki's Words and the Witch's Incantations. Tomoe and Miyako are friends with the main characters of Sasameki Koto. Finally, Yumi and Sachiko are the main characters of MariMite. Isaac and Miria from Baccano! and Jenny and Lynn from Mouretsu Pirates can be easily added to the list too. In short I can think of quite a few happy couples who survive and get together before the end of the shows, games, books, manga or other sources, so if you never see it, you really are watching the wrong things. I also applied fairly rigorous standards of canon and happiness too.

I haven't really watched that much anime. Some of them are quite good and do amazing things but I'm just not that into it.

I was thinking about fiction in general.

They aren't all from anime, in fact only one of these couples, Nanoha and Fate, originated in anime. One couple is from a video game, while most of them are from manga and three of them are from books. However, it is once again a case of writing what you know, just like most of them being lesbian couples. I just wrote the ones that sprung to mind easily, I didn't do a comprehensive search of happy couples in fiction.

Fair enough. Still, aren't anime and manga rather closely related?

Perhaps the above theory of mine is more particular to western fiction? Happy couple isn't dramatic, so it's either the end result of the story or something is (or will be) wrong.

There is some overlap, but not as much as you'd think. Manga is much a much larger and more diverse field than anime and contains everything from silly slapstick to dramas aimed at 40'ish housewives to instruction manuals to freaking Mein Kampf. Most of these manga would never get an anime as they are too niche and don't appeal to enough members of the wider otaku audience that anime, unlike manga, relies on, though one of them did get the beginning adapted in 2009.
