Define mainstream. :smalltongue:

If you ask me, most of Before the Dawn's discography.

A lot of obscure Touhou Project song remixes.

Many early songs by Uriah Heep and Black Sabbath that have now faded into obscurity, and the same for a lot of old bands (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Alice Cooper...)

I love movie soundtracks, so long as they don't sound too much as though you could point out a specific scene by listening to them.

One of these days I want John Williams to write an opera. A whole one. Maybe team up with Hans Zimmer, and someone just a touch more modern than both, like maybe... Daft Punk. I mean if Disney will let them do most of a movie soundtrack, surely they can do more. Maybe add Danny Elfman to the mix for some funk factor and instrument range.

Actually, a few songs of Daft Punk are very good and not much of their stuff is mainstream.

I've been trying to find good nerdy music that doesn't come from a soundtrack of some sort. Look up on youtube, I think it's Instantawesome? No lyrics, though somewhat generic fantasy/opera esque music, perfect for some tabletop gaming.

If you're a fan of chiptunes or old school videogame music, one must check out Anamanaguchi. They did the entire Scott Pilgrim VS The World: The Game soundtrack, absolutely love it. And their song Dawn Metropolis instantly hooked me on their genre.

Kutiman (http://www.youtube.com/user/kutiman)'s an Israeli music producer who cuts together YouTube videos into original songs. I really like My Favorite Color (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIl4LkHYRkg&list=UU7uoovBt-854ZO4-4tosU5g&index=21&feature=plcp) and This is Real Democracy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2Oka7uTytM).

Admittedly, I don't keep up with current music trends. That being said, I stumbled across Lindsey Stirling (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGCsyshUU-A) a couple months ago and am seriously enjoying her work.

Canon Rock. Mix Canon in D, one of my favourite pieces of instrumental music in a rockish air.
Awesome (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xjJXT0C0X4) tends to result.

The music really isn't good, but I think Ente Ente Ente (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zbSqUHFfhI) is really entertaining.
Using a sample of Ralph Wiggum from the German The Simpsons dub.

Nah ponies are only mainstream in the hipster way. So far. One day the internet will be full and then the great crusade to ponify reality shall begin. Speaking of pony music:

Nah ponies are only mainstream in the hipster way. So far.
They are, however, completely manestream.

But, really, this would depend entirely on your definition of mainstream... which, "made for YouTube" seems to be completely backwards. It means that the Beatles, Aerosmith, The Who, the London Symphony Orchestra, etc. would all qualify as not-mainstream.

What do we have that they should want?
We have a wall to work upon
We have work and they have none
And our work is never done
My children, my children
And the war is never won
The enemy is poverty
And the walls keep out the enemy
And we build the wall to keep us free
That's why we build the wall.
We build the wall to keep us free.
Anais Mitchell is one of the great geniuses of our time. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAgiK07Py9M)
Not the biggest fan of her voice (She has the perfect voice to voice Tinkerbell in the next Peter Pan adaptation, if they're smart enough to hire her), but it works for some songs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAgiK07Py9M). Her songs are brilliant, though. Ones she sings herself, as well.

I see what you did there. http://i.imgur.com/erYVj.png

And it was more mainstream by YouTube standards, which is better but still not actually applicable as YouTube is so encompassing these days. Though we could probably still come up with a loosely objective standard for mainstream. Namely either music shows up on major radio stations particularly Top Whatever lists, and music that once did. Though this only works for America I presume we could repeat the basic process in any particular country.

Depends entirely, of course, on one's definition of "mainstream" (and I'm not a fan of the late Arsenal's...), but Triple J's Hottest 100 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_J_Hottest_100) can be worth checking out. I adore the latest winner (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UVNT4wvIGY).
In fact, my other contribution to this thread will be: check out Gotye. Everything he's done.

Architecture in Helsinki is also pretty great, and I'm surprised Contact High (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxjcszKEcHE) didn't get higher on that list.

"Not mainstream" is pretty vague, but if you're just trying to broaden the shizz out of your musical horizons and want recommendations for anything that's not Top 40...
Twist & Launch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUpbg1uL29o) by the Wipeouters (actually Devo as a surf band), one of the weirdest songs I've ever heard and one of my favorites
Crazy Comets soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbQoQFLM_1s) for the Commodore 64
Pocket Calculator (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZt64_XOflk) by Kraftwerk--one last electronic one, and even if you've heard it, it's worth checking out this live version to watch them jam the heck out, especially the guy on the snare
Drumbone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN4E09Kx5Eo) by Blue Man Group
Chocolate Jesus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBwa8nqtris" Palladio[/URL] by Bond, a kick-ass techno/classical mashup
[URL="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wfamPW3Eaw) by Tom Waits--on the other end of the spectrum, a drunken hobo singing scary folk
In the Hall of the Mountain Queen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9JJid7VcUo) by Raymond Scott, a jazz composer with Asperger's that invented the world's first sequencer because his musicians kept wanting to improvise

I could keep going, but I won't. Just put something you like into Pandora and see what else it gives you.
