Work in progress...
oh god, i can see this becoming either cool, or horrid...
Idea: http://www.wowpedia.org/images/thumb/6/62/Kael.jpg/230px-Kael.jpg
You harness the power of Orbs, Orbs provide static buffs to you.

ex. +2 Dmg, +1 AC, +10 Movement
You select 3 orbs which you have "equiped"

Equip has 1 effect, Upgrading gives another.
ie. HP orb: +3 hp per upgrade. +1 Faster Regen per instance
As you level up, you select which orb you wish to upgrade with you.

If you want more AC, you upgrade the AC orb, ect.

Every ~5 Levels, you get to combine the power of the orbs into abilities.

ex. mixes orb 1, 1, 2 and get the ability flamestrike (would be cooler than flamestrike, but you get the idea

lvl 7/14 give you the ability to "Store" a combo (1 stored + current active set)

If you store 1,1,2(flamestrike) you can switch to 1,2,3 and still be able to use flamestike, but also w/e 1,2,3 is

some sort of empowerment of a specific combo?

Well, it's certainly an interesting enough idea.

But, for future reference, you can't just name all of your threads "~." Give us some idea of what the thread is going to be talking about, or at least give us some way to differentiate one of your threads from another.

Anyway, I'd say that the "combo" part needs to be available at 1st level and a lot more often from there than every 5 levels.

How does "upgrading" the orbs work? Maybe it should happen automatically happen?

Another thing that might be interesting, reminiscent a bit of Incarnum, would be to have the orbs have a unique effect depending on what body slot you have them "equipped" to. Since that is already several different effects per orb, perhaps you can limit the number of discrete Orbs to a small set of themed Orbs, perhaps based around the elements or something else similar.

For example, let's say there are Air, Darkness, Earth, Fire, Light, and Water orbs. They can be equipped to the Head, Body, Waist, Arms, Feet, or Weapon slots. If a slot is occupied by an item, then an orb can't be equipped there. For each slot, an orb has a different basic effect that automatically upgrades as you gain levels.

Beyond the basic orbs and equip slots, there are different orb combinations possible with unique effects. These combinations often require that the Orbs be equipped in specific slots. For example, equipping a Water orb in the Weapon slot and an Earth orb in the Arms slot might give you a powerful weapon of magical ice that deals cold damage.

As levels are gained, perhaps the class gains the ability to equip multiple orbs in the same slots, which would unlock new, more powerful combinations, and allow orbs to occupy slots with items.
