Easy dominating the center of the coastal town, the new Sandpoint Cathedral is a point of pride for the merry citizens. It is only fitting that it officially opens on the Swalltail Festival, a Desnan holiday celebrating the begining of Autumn complete with storytelling, feasting, and all-around revelry. The smells of food are prevalent in the air, as food is being served for free, in almost a competetive way. The owners of each of the town's taverns bring out their best meals, hoping to garner the most attention for their culinary trademarks. The general concensus of the crowd, however, seems to be that the Rusty Dragon's curry-spiced salmon and winterdrop mead are the clear winners, much to the propietor's (Ameiko Kaijitsu) delight.

The morning hours of the celebration are mostly spent listening to speeches from Mayor Kendra Deverin, Sherrif Hemlock, and the cathedral's head priest, Father Zantus. They each encourage the festival attendees to enjoy themselves, with the Sheriff reminding everyone to be safe around the evening bonfire, and Father Zantus requesting a moment of silence to remember the lives taken when the previous chapel burnt to the ground 5 years ago.

Kenshin
Early in the morning, while in your brother's house, a servant informs you that Lonjiku is feeling ill today, and will remain in the manor during the fesivities. He mentions that perhaps you would like to see your neice Ameiko, who is serving food for the celebration.

Everyone
Go ahead and describe what you're doing during the celebration, or what you'd like to do.

Ril'Ailelis can be found at one of the free food tables, looking pensive at the dead and burnt animals in front of him. He was still unsure how this whole "feeding" process worked, but it would seem that mortals needed to do so at rather frequent (and inconvenient) intervals.

The immortal was now trying to fill his Vessel with as much nourishment as it could take, in the hopes that he would not have to be bothered with repeating the feeding ritual for a while. Hence, the exiled-Reaper devoured the plate in front of him and proceeded to the next food table, unhindered by the crowds (who seemed to completely scatter as soon as they saw the seven feet tall human-like creature approaching)

Reaching the Rusty Dragon's table, Ril addresses whoever seems most likely to provide him with food

I would like to obtain sustenance from your establisment

If his Vessel were to indicate that it could not take further nourishment. Ril'aielis will begin patrolling the festival in hopes of finding some wicked creature that deserved his escort to the Beyond

Linea Martell

http://slightlyunstable.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/gunslinger.png

Puller her had down low over her face she mingles happily with the crowd. THe wagon had arrived late last night, Master Bissiman insisting on unloading before he would pay her and the other guards. After that she had more or less passed out under the wagon and slept until this morning.

Now however she had been enoying the festival, chatting with the crowd, enjoying the free food and drink, the worries of her past chasing her momentarily forgotten.

Linea headed vageuly towards the Rusty Dragon hearing the praise for the salmon on their lips. A massive hulking figure toting a large scythe caught her eye as he barked demands for food. An imposing figure, and worrying one taht left her hand brushing the hilt of her pistol for comfort. Putting the monstrous human out of her mind she slid gracefully through the crowd. "Thanks to you. May the sunflower illume you" she murmured as she tooks the food and drink watching around for anything intersting or anyone interesting...

One moment, Lady Linea Martell was holding a pastry. The light, buttery sort, with a hint of sugary glazing over the outer crust.

The next moment, she was not.

"Mmank oo!" The culprit of this daring crime made no effort to conceal herself. Noticing that she had caught the gunslinger's attention, the girl quickly swallows the remainder of whatever she had been chewing previously so as to take a sizable bite out of the pilfered baked good now in her hand, as if that action would indisputably lay claim to it.

She was slightly built, a few inches shorter (and by a rough guess, years younger) than the gunslinger, but her limbs showed the smoothly toned definition of someone readily familir with physical exertion. Her clothing was vividly red and seemed to be made of some lightweight, inexpensive fabric. The garb's rather outlandish cut, sleeveless and with a ruffled skirt that cut off a little above the knee, attested that it might have once been an entertainer's garment, though signs of a few attempts and unskilled needlework indicated that it might have been re-purposed as day-to-day attire. Of a similar red hue was the long pole she had slung over her back - one end of the roughly five-foot length was swaddled in bulky cloth, suggesting a polearm of some sort, but it was hard to be sure.

This strangely dressed girl somehow manages to crack a wide smile despite a mouth full to capacity with ill-gotten carbohydrates, holding out the hand not currently occupied in stuffing her face. Whatever skill she might have exercised in making such an expression did not, however, seem to extend in speech, as her words were muffled almost to the point of incomprehensibility.

"Fffggin gaadz, tiiss nng ish fffggin delthhous! Oo shhud trii un!"

It was honestly rather impressive, when you got down to it, how she was managing to eat so quickly without seeming to spill a single crumb.

Linea

Linea looks slightly surprised by the theft of her pastry but after looking at the young girl and listening to the mumbled expression of enjoyment she can't help but smile. "Yes they are good... esepcially mine!"- the sting taken away with a smile. There was planty of other food to eat.

Looking at the girl she is also clearly not a local, and Linea knows that with her powder horns, strange lamellar curiass and dress she is also not local Linea sticks out her hand "I'm Linea, I've only just arrived in Sandpoint. Have you been here long? Shallw e get a drink, after those long speeches this morning I've a thirst a river could fill."

Kenshin

Kenshin clears his throat, even his calm face unable to hide bewilderment at the daring theft that takes place before his eyes. His deep brown eyes flicker over the scene, his hands clasped in front of him in a look that seems almost shy.

He is dressed simply in a loose-fitting knee-length robe of innocuous fabric, but he is less than usual, judging by the sheen of his unusual armour, or by the pair of finely crafted blades sheathed in his belt.

He speaks, his words slow, almost ponderous, his tone quizzical, and his voice laden with a heavy accent. "It is not impolite to converse with a mouth filled with bread?" he asks of no one in particular.

Hearing the one woman introduce herself, Kenshin bows. "I am deeply sorry for intruding. I am Kenshin Kaijitsu. I am honoured to know you."

Linea looks at the new arrival before taking a second look taking in the short stature and yellowish skin. "I am Linea Martell, pleased to meet you. Would you be from Tien? Its a place I have longed to go to."

She looks about for a place to sit. "Maybe we could sit and have a drink and you could explain how best to reach your lands?

The girl finishes the (delightfully crispy) pastry as Linea speaks her piece, and Kenshin makes his own introduction. Apparently out of things to put in it for the moment, her mouth takes the opportunity to form her first clear words of the conversation.

"Who cares if polite or whatever the hell you're talking about? It's bread. You're supposed to eat it, not wander around waving it in the friggin' air." She shrugs, a slight smirk creeping into face in place of the grin that had previously occupied it. "Whatever. Call me Sake. It's a pleasure to meet you... though mostly because that was a goddamn tasty thingamajig you were carrying around. Know of any drinks that could wash that down?"

As the group wanders near a set of tables, Sake plops herself down in the first available chair, stretching her arms high above her head and propping the red-hued pole up against her shoulder. Looking a bit more closely at her, Linea might note that Sake's features and build were very noticeably Tianese. It was easy to overlook, with her pale skin and strongly Cheliaxian accent, but with Kenshin standing so near her it would definitely stand out.

"Anyway, yeah, I'm new here. I heard the locals were setting up some big hooplah for their nutjob goddess, so I figured I'd drop by and see if there was anything I could do to screw with them." Another shrug. "I wasn't planning to stay, but hell, free food. I don't turn down free food. Not every day you get to stuff yourself like this, and I don't think I've ever seen an all-you-can eat tavern where the food wasn't absolute piss."

"So that's my story. Whoopdee-friggin'-doo. You can tell me yours if it means you'll buy the drinks. And hell, powder weapons and... shoguns, or whatever the crap they're called, are each about as common around here as the other. Which to to say not goddamn very."

"Oh!" and elderly halfling woman gasps as Ril'Aelis requests food. She grabs one of the many plates of spiced salmon, and hands it over to the large man. "Here's some... uh, food. Enjoy!"

From inside the tavern, a young Tien woman emerges, her simple clothing covered in culinary stains. Her hair is black, for the most part, with her bangs being a strange streak of white. She brings a few more plates out with her, and looks as if she is about to return to cooking, when she spots Kenshin at a table. "Uncle Kenshin!" she yells hurrying over to the table to give her uncle a hug, a public gesture rather uncommon from their homeland of Minkai. "I got a message from father saying you would be here. It's great to see you!"

Quintin

Quintin has, up until this point, been sitting slightly apart from the crowd. Next to him sits a single untouched pastry carefully laid on a handkerchief. The wizard scribbles away at a leather bound book that looks too large for his small frame. Occasionally he peers about the square, his eyes magnified by his thick glasses, before returning to his note-taking.

The apprentice looks up crossly as a group of three people come closer, talking loudly. When they do not move on quickly, the rises from his seat and stows his book in his pack as a fourth figure emerges from the tavern to join them.

"Excuse me," Quintin says, his voice reedy and high. "I wonder if you might all continue on your way. I am sure that many more delicacies may be located and consumed in such places that will not disturb my research." Quintin says, trying to sound as important as possible.

With more sustenance in his plate, Ril'aielis starts to look for a place to sit (mortals seemed to be partial to obtaining nutrients while not exerting their lower limbs)

While scanning for a suitable location, the exiled-Reaper watches as a young woman rushes to hug an older man. Thinking that learing more about the interactions between mortals and their offspring would help him understand his Vessel better, Ril strides towards the eclectic group of individuals.

Luckily enough for the beyonder, a fifth mortal vacated a nearby table and joined the group. Ril'aielis quickly occupies the now free space that was being used by Quintin

Kenshin turns at the sound of Ameiko's voice, only to find himself in her embrace. He seems stunned and stiff for a moment, then he lets out a chuckle, his arms moving to return his niece's hug. "You have grown so, little Ameiko," he says with a small smile. "It has been many seasons since I have seen you." He releases the hug, turning his head to inspect the tavern behind Ameiko. "It is good that you take up an honourable trade. You must bring your father much happiness to have a proper daughter."

At the words of the wizard beside them she glances down at the scribe, "Apologies, but.... its is the middle of festival and you are taking up a large table to youreself. We may have to join you"

Ameiko offers a slightly embarassed smile and responds, "Well, we don't talk much any more. Not after mother and the incident with Tsuto..." Her voice drifts off, and there is a brief silence before she continues, "Father probably didn't mention any of that. I'll have to tell you about it. Not now, though! I have a lot of work to finish right now!"

With that, she dashes back into the tavern, no doubt to continue serving and producing the delicious food being offered.

Sake seemed happy to simply wolf down her salmon rolls, followed shortly by the salmon rolls of anyone who seemed disinclined to eat their own. Judging by her expression (she thankfully didn't try and speak with a mouth full of fish), the meal wasn't up to the standards of the sweetened bread... but she ate it all anyway. Still, either she had an iron stomach or was concealing immense internal distress, as such spicy food was almost certainly not intended to be eaten in bulk, particularly in the wake of sweetened consumables that could easily constitute a full meal themselves.

That accomplished, she turns her attention back to Linea, fingers drumming idly on the haft of her polearm. "Yeah, friggin' nuts, I'm sure. You know, that last Tian I saw had his legs broken and was dead of third-degree burns to the majority of his body, so I guess this really is... something. Hey, speaking of fires, ten gold says that bonfire later is gonna burn down the cathedral, or at least a few smaller buildings. No way Desna's gonna let all these festivities go without finding some way to collectively screw over her followers. Also..."

Without warning or even a real break in her speech, Sake gives the haft of her weapon a sharp twist. With a resounding thunk, the butt end of the pole comes crashing down mere inches in front of Quintin. "...I really, honestly, give give less craps about your studying than I do about a rat's ass, because at least the latter could hypothetically be used as friggin' sustenance in a pinch. You, on the other hand, are whining about something so unbelievably petty I have difficulty finding words to adequately express it. So rather than try, how about this - you go find somewhere quiet, and we will continue to sit here and exploit this establishment for free food. How does that sound?"

Kenshin

Kenshin sits at Linea's behest, folding his hands neatly in his lap, his body square to the gunslinger. "The mountains are beautiful. The world is all white glass there. It is very peaceful. But most did not see it so. This journey for them is full of pain and fear. These I think could find no beauty in the ice."

Kenshin frowns at Sake's remarks. "It is not the way of a lord to destroy the things of his people. Why should a god do this if it is not the way?"

His passive demeanour disappears the moment Sake smashes down her weapon. He stands sharply, his arms at his side and his eyes alert. "This is not polite," he scolds. "You are bringing yourself great shame to act in this way, even for one who calls herself after sake."

Ril'aielis observes the bickering mortals, friendly to each other one moment, aggressively posturing the next. The beyonder was truly dumbfounded by the swings in their interactions.

For a moment, Ril had the urge of unwrapping his massive scythe and just collect the humans' souls, getting him closer to his goal to free himself form his Vessel. Fighting down his violent impulses, the exiled-Reaper forces himself to observe the creatures before him: Both women seemed proficient in battle, and the man that had been hugged by the whelp carried himself with the marks of a warrior. Battling these many would only bring harm to the Vessel

Deciding that more observation was in order, Ril'aielis remains sitting quietly by the boisterous group

"I am not sure that you understand," Quintin says, frowning. "My work is not only of a historical and archaeological nature. Given the current situation, I have, for all practical purposes, a limited array of research methods available. I am in the process of documenting ethnographically the customs and rituals of modern Varisia. While the methodology may be somewhat questionable and the conclusions may not be entirely relevant, it seems the most prudent course of action," the apprentice explains dryly.

"You all, at least insofar as extrapolation of my preliminary data suggests, are not locals, thus constituting an unfortunate sampling error. I hope this clarifies my request." He smiles politely at the others.

As Linea hands over the morsel, Sake hefts it slightly in her hand but does not commence the voracious gorging she had thus far been partaking in. The girl still takes a bite of the crisp fruit every few sentences, but either she was actually getting full or the conversation had started to take more of her attention.

"Lords and gods aren't the same thing. You friggin' realize that, right? Vassals are tools for a lord, but for a god, mortals are... I dunno. Favored toys, if we're friggin' lucky. Boring toys if we're not. And boring toys get broken when they've exhausted their value." Sake shrugs.

"But hell, you aren't gonna listen to me anyway. When this town goes to hell, don't say I didn't goddamn warn you."

"As for shame, again, I'm gonna have to point out that I give zero craps about that. Zero. That is less than one. That is less than a fraction of one. That is none. Because unlike some of these sorry people, I am not going to be sticking around for whatever ends up messing this friggin' place up. This food isn't going to stick around forever, and as soon as its gone I'm gonna stuff my pockets as full as they can get, maybe nick a satchel off of someone, and then I'm gone. There's nothing between here and hell that could get me to stick around that forsaken eyesore of a cathedral anyway."

While speaking, she withdrew the butt of her weapon from its resting place in front of Quintin's workspace, and she returned her attention to the mage as she finished the snide rant at the samurai. "Oh, well, we're a friggin' sampling error. That makes it all better then. You can stay right there, and observe all you like." Sake's words are absolutely dripping with sarcasm, and she punctuates the end of her speech with a large bite of the orange citrus in her hand. She was probably aiming for a dramatic crunching, but it ended up making more of a wet tearing sound.

Because oranges don't crunch.

I am merely observing my surroundings while partaking of nourishment. I am a stranger in these lands, but it is my understanding that my behavior is not out of the ordinary. responds the exiled-Reaper

Ril considers leaving the table, but decides against it. Maybe he could learn more about the ways of the humans by talking to this unusual woman and the unusual group with her

Before your conversation (or quarreling) advances any further, you hear a loud bang, not unlike an Alkenstar cannon, originating from the stage where Father Zantus stands smiling, adjacent to a cloth-covered wagon with conspicuous bump.

It seems he used a thunderstone to get everyone's attention

"Now that I have your attention," he says, as the crowd gives the holy man their full attention, "It is time for the Swallowtail Release! As you know, when Desna fell to Golarion many millenia ago, she became injured upon crashing into the hard earth. A wayward child found the wounded goddess, and nursed her to health, restoring Desna to her full splendour. To reward the child for the aid she gave to the goddess, benevolent Desna transformed her into an immortal swalltail butterfly, allowing her to freely explore the lands until the end of time." With a fluorish, he uncovers the cloth, revealing a cage packed with live swarming swallowtail butterflies. The priest quickly opens the cage, allowing them to fly into the sky, forming a cloud, then dispersing across the city, much to the delight of the Sandpoint citizens, who respond to the release with cheers and laughs. The children especially seem delighted, running around trying to catch the holy animals of Desna.

The explosion had caused for Ril'aielis' hand to go for the shaft of his scythe. Realizing that there was no real danger (and cursing the damned mortals for their ridiculous methods), the reaper lets go of the weapon and watches the display.

Seeing the other human children chasing after the butterflies, the beyonder reaches deep within his mind and once again tries to communicate with his Vessel, hoping that the boy would show any signs of sentience.

The child's mind does not respond. Mimicking not the butterflies but the larvae that preceded them, the Vessel's mind remained in stasis under the chrysalis that had formed over his consciousness at the moment of merging with the beyonder

Ril sighs in defeat and, as if nothing had happened, responds to Linea's question cryptically

I come from where every being must go, which is the same place I intend to return to.

With a stroke of inspiration, the exiled reaper changes both subject and target of his inquiries, addressing the small human in the robes who said was cataloging the customs of the region

Is playing with butterflies a trait specific to the whelps of this tribe? If that were the case, the lack of response from the Vessel could be a clue to his origins

"I have yet to reach formal conclusions on the matter," Quintin says to Ril'Aielis, showing a good deal of enthusiasm. "Desnan rituals have been observed in many societies, including the preliterate. To see with every moment the world. To know each place of it. Each thing in it. To seek with every breath, every beat of the heart, life." He closes his eyes, deeply inhaling the air. "This is a good fate."

One of the swallowtails comes to rest upon Kenshin's outstretched palm. His eyes open, and he gazes at it, his eyes focussed on its every minute motion. "It has to it many wonders, this little thing. Should each one be such, it should be a worthy life to see them all."

Linea's reaction to the explosion had verified Ril's suspicions that the female was indeed knowledgeable of the ways of combat. The beyonder was glad he had been able to keep his impulses at bay.

Ril nods at the gunslinger. It seemed that was a sign of respect for those who were ready to act when the shadow of death loomed nearby

The robed man's academic answer and the young woman's clarification, although somewhat confusing, seemed to appease the exiled-Reaper: Nothing could be said from the lack of reaction from the Vessel. Maybe the Child was not from the area. If that was so, why was the Child headed this way?

When the conversation turns towards the Desnan myth and its significance, Ril'aielis adds his opinion if a (deadly) serious tone

Even if the story is true, the extension of that whelp's life is only temporary. Though his new lifespan may seem eternal by a mortal's standard, but it would eventually would have to end, for not even the Gods can stop the journey upon which every being must embark.

"It's not the same friggin' thing. A butterfly can only... look at stuff." Sake shrugs, finally spotting a nearby platter of mugs and grabbing one for herself. She took a few gulps, but they seemed more a compulsion than any genuine desire to consume to mead, despite her previous comments. The redheaded vagabond turned her attention back to Linea after a few moment of drinking-induced silence.

"Whaddya think, Alky? You seem like the friggin' bleeding heart sort... could you stand to flit around and look at all the crap this world has to offer, and not do anything? Just be ignored? Lifting the tankard of alcoholic beverage, the girl spends a few long moments guzzling it as quickly as she can.

"...I'd rather... ugh, friggin' die. Drag me off and clap me in red-hot chains, or whatever the hell it is the gods do with people like me."

Rolling her shoulders and closing her eyes in an attempt to shake off the mead's immediate assault on her innards, Sake proceeds to clasp one hand tight around the haft of her weapon. At the strange if foreboding words of Ril'ailes she merely smiles and nods before turning back to the cartographer as he seems the most normal of the lot. Pointing at the chair she waits for a nod from him before sitting down. "How did you come to be here?"

Once again interrupting the conversation, the sound of a thunderstone is heard from the stage on which Father Zantus released the swallowtails. As a crowd once again assembles in front of the priest, who clears his throat, readying himself to speak once more. Before he can utter a single word, however, a sharp scream of pain rings out in the distance. Less than two seconds later, another, deeper scream is heard, and a full-blown panic grips the crowd. Everyone begins to scramble in the opposite direction of the screams, while you hold your ground looking for the source. As the last person blocking your view retreats, you see around half a dozen goblins standing over the corpses of a man, two women, and a small child, giggling with manical glee. One of the goblins, which appears to be female, begins chanting in the rough goblin tongue as the small murderers swing their swort shords around happily.

Goblin
Goblins chew and goblins bite.
Goblins cut and goblins fight.
Stab the dog and cut the horse,
Goblins eat and take by force!
Goblins race and goblins jump.
Goblins slash and goblins bump.
Burn the skin and mash the head,
Goblins here and you be dead!
Chase the baby, catch the pup.
Bonk the head to shut it up.
Bones be cracked, flesh be stewed,
We be goblins! You be food!

Sake might have been caught off guard, and eating likely would have been, were it not for the subtle shift in the atmosphere prior to the screaming. In a city, trouble had a very distinctive sound, and memorizing it was all too often the difference between life and death. Right now, the redhead just fealt frustrated.

"Dammit! Couldn't these little piles of crap have waited until we were done eating?" Standing quickly enough to send her chair skittering to the ground, reaching up to the head of her polearm and giving the thick string a sharp tug as she broke into stride. Sure enough, the sack-cloth safety fell away, revealing a wickedly sharp triangular slate of metal flanked by two jagged barbs. Hefting the weapon with an easy balance, Sake's first few steps quickly become a sprint as the girl drove the long weapon like a ballista bolt towards her nearest foe.

Whether or not her thrust landed true, she kept one hand positioned to spin the weapon into a ready position from which she could lash out at any foe foolish enough to try and slip towards the less well-defended individuals to the south. As she took position, Sake shouted back to the gunslinger.

Kenshin swiftly charges toward one of the goblins as soon as the crowd clears, dispatching it with relative ease. Linea, meanwhile, aims for the goblin closest to her, piercing it through its small knee with lead. Sayaka moves forward to take the small creature out for good, but it ducks under her swing's large arc.

Ril'Aielis, meanwhile, moves toward the enemies menacingly, while Quintin joins the fight firing a silverly bolt to the goblin on the rooftop, injuring it as the magical energy assaults its barely-defending flesh, but not dropping it.

The goblin woman speaking the cruel chant turns toward Kenshin, trying to disable him with a minor spell. Unfortunately for her, the samurai resists the attempt without much difficulty. The other goblins, seeing how handily he defeated one of their kind, gang up on him, one managing to score a minor blow against the distracted man.

The goblin nearly decapitated by Sake, moves closer to her, inside the reach of her weapon, and attempts to score a hit in on the girl. She nimbly evades the attack, as she notices a goblin run out from behind a wagon in the alleyway.

The newest arrival, and the one on the roof fire their slings toward the back of the party, hitting Quinting and Linea with small stones.

Linea's shot finishes off the goblin harassing the party from the roof, causing him to stagger with the impact of her bullet, and plummet to his death. Quintin meanwhile, is able to release a burst of colorful energy across the goblins surrounding Sake and Kenshin, causing them to fall unconscious after a fit of confusion. Sakaya uses this opportunity to charge toward the goblin chanter, slicing across her small torso, but not finising off the goblin. When the newest arrival enters the scene to fire its sling toward the party, Ril'Aielis swings his scythe at the small creature, cleaving it into two, and ending its pitiful life. Kenshin, meanwhile, is vexed by the goblin nearest to him, which bounces out of the way of his katana's slice.

Thankfully this goblin is unable to cause any damage to either the charging Sake, or the armored Kenshin, and his small sword simply does not swing with enough momentum to damage the samurai. The chanter, meanwhile, procures a sharp dagger, dashing toward Sake, and thrusting upward with the blade. Fortunately, the Tien girl is able to avoid the attack just in time with a sidestep.

"O Resplendent Goddess, take this prayer as thanks of the blessings bestowed upon us by those you have sent." After a few moments of heavy breathing, Sake offers a jab to the priest in a mocking, falsetto tone. With a dismissive gesture she slings her ranseur over one shoulder, offering a glare to the Desnan cleric. "Your thanks are accepted, bugbrain. But if you want me somewhere, you might want to give us some friggin' directions."

Letting the others voice their opinions, the redhead drops into a low crouch, turning the still-warm civilian corpses onto their backs (and roughly patting their pockets in the process). Sake's lips pull back noticeably, baring gritted teeth as she looks at the carnage up close. Resting her elbows on her knees, she glares up at the high priest with even more hatred - if such a thing was possible.

"Hey, do these people live here? They got kids?" Her orange eyes flick briefly to the dead child before returning to the holy man. "...or siblings? There may not be time to find them now, but if I come back and these wallets have made a... donation... to your goddess, I will friggin' murder you, do you understand?"

The guards were either watching the festival when this happened, or guarding the gates; I think you should check to see if the guards have regrouped by the town hall, or perhaps check the gates leading into the town to see if you can help."

To Sake's anger, the head priest frowns and responds, "Child, I do not know your griefs, but there is no place for looting when there are lives to be saved. While I... appreciate your concern for these people, I believe your anger is best focused on the goblins we face."

The samurai's calm eyes pass over the halberd-armed goblin as it chops down the dog. "Test your blade against another," he intones. "Strike at me if you dare; honour is my shield." He stares down the goblin as he speaks, eyes narrowed, katana perfectly still in front of him. Then in a sudden motion, he spins, bringing his sword swinging towards the nearest goblin's neck.

Even as she slung her weapon parallel to the ground and broke into a short-range sprint, Sake couldn't help but feel a rush of surprise. This was a lot of goblins, and there were supposedly even more elsewhere. This was the kind of infestation she'd expect in a Cheliax slum, not a city that danced brainlessly around a Desnan flag. Were these people really stupid enough to hold a festival with a goblin problem this rampant, or was this some sort of invasion?

"...ugh, screw that..." She refocused as she hurled herself into a lunging strike at the center of the goblin formation. She was faintly aware of the other fighters slinging attacks of their own at the creatures, but the complex maneuvering of her polearm was now taking most of her attention, banishing thoughts of unlikely allies as quickly as those of mysterious goblin presences.

Round 2

It's a goblin massacre.

Just as they are begining to turn around to confront their newest enemies, one is disabled due to a gunshot between its bulbous eyes. As the nearest four begin to prepare their weapons, they are cut down by the charging Ril, Sake, and Kenshin, dropping them before the goblins can so much as attempt a parry. As this continues, Quentin sends a colorful burst of energy toward one of the three remaining goblins, causing it to spasm and fall against the edge of the nearest building.

In retaliation, the halberd-wielding goblin grins maniacally, seemingly nonplussed by the extermination of its kin. It dashes toward Ril'Aielis, jumping over the crate, and manages to slash across his chest, penetrating through the armor. His eyes appear almost bestial as he recklessly swings his weapon.

The goblin woman meanwhile, nervously begins her song, backing up slightly due to the force so recently displayed by the group.

Entranced by the thrill of his fifth kill, Ril'aielis is too slow at turning around to face the halberd foe on time. As the weapon tears through his flesh, the beyonder's thoughts go to the Vessel: Had the child's body been harmed?

I will REAP you!! yells the hulking humanoid, rage in his voice

But Ril is not blinded by his fury. Realizing that many of the other combatants are standing to his left, the beyonder steps to the goblin's side, forcing him to expose his back to the others

True to his word, Ril'Aielis reaps the goblin, splitting him in two with his massive scythe. The chanter gasps, quits her song, and looks as if she's about to flee for her life.

Combat is over, but you can finish off or capture the chanter if you'd like.

Giving her weapon a crude yank, Sake liberates the cruelly barbed triangular head of her polearm from the fresh corpse now impaled upon it. There was a frankly disturbing grin on her face as the girl tilts her head to address the goblin. It looked forced, almost painful, but the glint in her eyes was impossible to deny.

<"Hey, you."> Sliding her hand along the wooden shaft, Sake gives the ranseur a swift ninety-degree twirl, whipping the head directly onto eye level with the sole remaining goblin. The motion sends a small arc of crimson droplets dancing the the air, the furthest of them landing almost at the now-silent chanter's feet. The young fighter's grin persists as she intones the guttural syllables of the goblin language.

<"Drop your weapons. You try and run, you die, because I can run faster... and Alky's bullets can outrun us both. You make yourself useful though, and I might just consider not tossing your corpse in the same sewer as your wretched little friends. As it so happens, you've got a great opportunity right here, because I'm mighty curious as to what you're doing crashing this festival."> She shrugs, though the movement doesn't budge her weapon's tip an inch.

<"So I advise you start talking before I decide you'd make a more interesting corpse than an informant."> Although her grasp on the language was a little sketchy, there were few things easier to get across in goblin than good old-fashioned death threats. The slow drip of red from the ransuer's tip only reinforced her meaning.

As he cleaves the enemy in half, Ril'aielis is once again flooded with the power of harvesting a soul. But the beyonder learned his lesson from the previous attack and before he gets too carried away, the exiled reaper returns his attention to the battlefield.

Two enemies remained: one of them asleep, the other about to flee (the poor creature seemed to lack the understanding that you cannot outpace death). Both of their souls ready to be collected

Before Ril gets a chance to act, Sake begins to communicate with the chanter. Not understanding the reasons for the reach-weapon wielding woman to talk with the goblin, the beyonder entertains the thought of just killing the pitiful creature before it got a chance to flee...

The exiled-reaper's reason prevails agains the killing urges, and Ril realizes that this goblin might be able to point out to more targets for his harvest

While Sake communicates, the blood covered beyonder moves towards the sleeping goblin. Not paying attention to the conversation (which he does not understand anyways), Ril'aielis brings once again his scythe to work and dispatches the fallen foe with a mighty swing

After the grim work is done, Ril turns his attention back to the Vessel's status. It would seem that no vital organs were harmed, but if he didn't stop the blood loss, the Child might be in danger

And the mercs don't steal kills - that defeats the whole damn point of the thing for them." Sake shrugs again, letting her eyes flick to the scythe-wielding man momentarily before returning to the cowering goblin.

His wounds mostly mended, the beyonder turns to face his newfound "allies". He could not hear their whispering voices, but the look on their eyes spoke volumes to Ril'aielis.

They were afraid of him.

A part of the reaper basked in the feeling, for that had been the mortal's most common reaction when encountering Ril for the first (and last) time during his eons of work.

But another part of the hulking humanoid, the calm part that had watched patiently in the middle of a battlefield as hundreds of souls volunteered themselves to his care, realized that it would be foolish for him to cross this group, for they were accomplished warriors; a confrontation would surely harm the Vessel.

Also, the beyonder could not shake the feeling that, if he were to stick to this mortals, he would continue increasing the number of collected souls

Looking directly at the rest of the group, Ril'aielis slowly lowers the blood-soaked scythe to the ground

I will not harm you. Your journey to the beyond shall not be with me.

Looking at the goblin chanter, the reaper adds
Though the same cannot be said of that creature.

Though more distracted than she would have liked to have been (optimally, not at all), it was difficult to try and outrange a reach fighter without their noticing. The longer you think on that, the longer I'm going to have to think of a some very interesting ways to try and persuade you. You see Bones over there? He's a healer. There's really nothing to compare it to - the nerve endings try and fuse to the metal, and then all it takes it a tiny little nudge to set your body on fire. You can keep it up for days if you're careful, and I'll admit I'm bored enough right now to kill that kind of time.">

"Stay? In this town? Pfft, please, I have nothing on my mind but seeing how fast I can get out of this damn place. Only reason I came here in the first place was to eat you peoples' food and have a laugh at your latest monument to idiocy." Sake shrugs, producing a stained handkerchief from somewhere on her person and beginning to clean the gore off of the tines of her weapon. As the group fought, she seemed to have been making some sort of silent, spiteful point with the killing nearby goblins before the often-slower reaper got a chance to swing his scythe.

"Still, it looks like your goblin problem has managed to force itself into become my goblin problem. If there's a warband out there, I'm sure as friggin' hell is hot not gonna go and get myself murdered by a bunch of piss-skinned rats. So it looks like I'm stuck here until either you solve your goddamn problem or I get impatient enough to do it for you."

"I will stay as long as I can be of help, Sheriff Belor Hemlock," Kenshin says. "It is my duty to protect my family who have made their homes in this place."

"But please, Father Zantus, speak of this news that you have found."

Father Zantus clears his throat before speaking. "It seems that a group of goblins managed to sneak into the town's graveyard during the commotion of the attack, with a rather... erm, specific goal." He appears unsettled as he continues, "My predecesor, Father Tobyn who perished in the Sandpoint fire 5 years ago has had his body removed. To what purpose, I haven't the faintest idea, but this is somewhat disturbing..."

The Sheriff furrows his brow, as if trying to come up with an explanation for the goblins' actions. "That is disturbing, but I can't think of how that would endanger the town in any way." He turns to the group again, "There isn't really anything else you need to do, but I think it would really help with the morale of the town if you could stay here for a bit. Hell, they might even see you as heroes after this attack. I'm going to be requesting some extra defense from Magnimar, but while I'm away, I think it would help the people of Sandpoint if you could watch over the town for a bit."

Before you can answer, Father Zantus looks to Sakaya and asks, "Child, you seem burdened. What troubles you so about my faith?"

Ril'aielis reaction to the priest's words could be best describe as... outrage. Death was the final journey, the inevitable end. The attempts by mortals to avoid the unavoidable were nothing short of atrocities in the eyes of the beyonder

A corpse being taken for unkown reasons that suggested necromancy... was an affront to the exiled reaper

Turning to the priest and the sheriff, the hulking humanoid announces

If they have done anything to upset the soul's rest... I will reap every one of them

It does not seem it is open to discussion. Remembering the words spoken by the small mortal and the over-excitable girl, Ril questions the local authorities

Where is Thistletop? Could the pathetic creatures have taken the resting body there?

"What troubles me? Aw, shucks, let me think about that for a second." Sake crosses her arms, donning an exaggerated look of contemplation.

"Well, Doc, I think it all started when I was a wee little girl. You see, Desna came out of the sky one day, murdered my family, strangled my dog, and then turned to me and said, 'Sayaka Takeshi - screw you with a rusty pike, amen', and vanished in a puff of bitchiness. So hell, when you look at it that way, I'd say I'm taking things pretty goddamn well." If spite and sarcasm could be said to have physical mass, the girl's snide rant would likely have collapsed into a singularity. Such a thought is, of course, ridiculous, and she continued unhindered by the hypothetical gravitational field of her words.

"Not that I begrudge you guys worshiping her of course. I'm sure she like, saves plenty of orphans and puppies and crap like that, when she's not busy enthusiastically molesting their psyche. A real paragon of virtue. Someone to goddamn aspire to. Have fun." Shrugging dismissively, Sake addresses the Sheriff.

"I couldn't care less about some hero-worship gibberish from a town I'm gonna bounce from at first opportunity, but while I'm friggin' stuck here I might as well kill the time with something constructive. I've you've got cash to shell out, my purse and I are happy to join your little warband."

"Oh, and some advice, free of charge - there are really only two kinds of people who steal corpses. Those who want to bring them back to life, and those who want to use them as reagents in some friggin' creepy hocus-pocus. Unless your priest had friends in some goddamn weird places, its probably the latter. And if its the latter, grab a friggin' hat, cause things are gonna get hella stormy around here soon. Gobs are one thing, but if you've got a wannabe bonedaddy strong enough to raise a ranking priest, you've got problems."

Linea grimaces at the rant emanating from the small Tien girl. Cutting through the barrage of abuse she interrupts following the intentions of Ril'.

"The desecration of the dead is a hateful act. The lady sunflower despises those who meddle with undeath." She barely looks to the others before pledging herself.

"Sheriff, point me towards Thistletop, I will slay these grave robbers and return the priest's body so that he may enjoy Pharasma's rest."

A slight note of caution enters her voice... "Father Zarstus, before we leave, does your Temple have any healing poultices that we may better be able to return the body of your lost Holy Father?

"Thistletop?" The sheriff looks at you with a blank face. "I can't say that sounds familiar to me at all. Then again, I don't really know much about goblins."

He appears frustrated with his lack of knowledge, but then his expression changes as something else occurs to him, "But I know someone who does. Her name is Shalelu Andosana, and she patrols the wilderness around Sandpoint. I can go seek her out to see if she has any more insight than I do. In the meantime..." His face relaxes somewhat, and the first time since you met the man, he smiles, "I encourage you to stay in town. You may find that the people of Sandpoint will be quite appreciative of your part in defending them."

Shalelu Andosana...

The exiled reaper knew this name well. The ranger was the sole keeper of Ril'aielis' secret, for she had found the beyonder in his Vessel form while Ril had been wandering the wilderness in search for Sandpoint.

Thinking she was rescuing a lost child, Shalelu had taken care of the Vessel whilr Ril slept, but that only had meant that she was present when the beyonder awakened and his essence overwhelmed the Child. Weakened and unprepared, the exiled reaper had no choice but to share his story with the ranger.

After hearing Ril's tale, Shalelu had helped the beyonder make his way to Sanpoint, thus making the hulking humanoid indebted to the woman (which did not sit well with Ril'aielis at all)

The exiled reaper decides that, for now, it would be best to keep his association with the ranger discreet

Very well, bring her to us soon Ril tells the sheriff.

His piece said, the beyonder waits a bit to hear if any of these other mortals have anything useful to add before he heads back to his own lodgings

Sake appears to have, at least temporarily, exhausted her verbal vitriol. No more caustic remarks pour forth, and she simply gives a bored shrug.

"Yeah, sure. Beats camping by a long shot. Spend as much time as you like finding your lady ranger friend, I'll be... I dunno. Eating. If this town is suposed to be grateful, I better goddamn well get a few free meals." The girl directs her attention to Kenshin momentarily.

"Hey, that was like, your niece or cousin or... ugh, the cute waitress, whatever her name was. She had awesome food. I'm gonna assume that her join has spare rooms for kickass town-saving people like us to chill. I want a bed. Among other things. But I totally have dibs on a bed, somewhere. Somewhere, there is a bed, and that bed belongs to me."

Sure enough, the Rusty Dragon Inn seems delighted to take in the new defenders of Sandpoint. The innkeeper, Ameiko beams as you enter and says, "It didn't look like it when I saw you wolfing down food earlier, but you guys are pretty good at slaying little green pests. I got a good look from here after I barricaded the doors. I see why father respects you so much, uncle Kenshin!"

After a hot meal, Aldern Foxglove emerges from his room to greet his saviors, a filled leather pouch in hand. He walks up to Linea and Sakaya with a broad smile and announces, "Here is your proper compensation, fine ladies. Listen, I was planning a boar hunt tomorrow while I'm staying at this dismal place, and it would be divine if you were to accompany me. Your henchmen are more than welcome to join, too."

The pouch contains 250gp worth of rubies.

It takes a few moments for Ril to process that when Foxglove speaks of "henchmen" he is including the exiled reaper in said count.

The enraged beyonder toys with the idea of finishing the mortal's life right then and there. Once again, Ril'aielis willpower prevails and he merely ignores the human. Walking to another table, Ril asks for more nutrients (it would seem that all the battles of the day have depleted the Vessel's reservoirs of energy)

Talking to the inkeeper, the hulking humanoid requests for a single room(though it sounds more like a demand)

I require individual lodging for the time of reverie. I must not be interrupted

Linea looks at the merchant with a dissaproving air. An air improved slightly by the rubies that she quickly offers around the rest of the party. At the merchants forward inclinations she steps back a shake of her head.

"I shall purchase my own room thank you Master Merchant." After that she looks around at the others. "And I will be curious to see this boar you speak of. Is it a large or dangerous beast?"

"At least until we can meet the Lady Ranger and get a guide to Thistletop to end the goblin menace".

Sake's belligerence seems to have taken a back seat at this point, possible worn down by the constant praise. She smirk's confidently and gives a curtsey that is only slightly sarcastic as Ameiko adds another complement to the heap. In fact, in terms of sarcasm, the curtsey was nothing more than a very mild taco - definitely possessing more sauce than the average action, but without any real burn.

"Aw shucks, Miss. If I'd known you liked that kind of thing, I'd have sawed off a head for you to mount on a wall or something. I know a kickass taxidermist that'd do it dirt cheap. By the way, speaking of that food, can we get a tab going or something? I'm hungry." The warrior seems on the verge of ordering a full meal then and there, but in interrupted by Foxglove's arrival.

"Wow, I'm not getting stood up! This is a new and novel experience. Please, do not allow my polite friggin' amazement deter you from the presentation of money, forthwit-" Sake freezes as the pouch drops into her hand, after taking a moment to examine its contents.

"This is... holy crap. Crap, this is a lot of money. This is, I dunno, a lot. Awesome." It was indeed a lot of money. It was enough money for food. All the food. All of it. And dye and clothes and all sorts of luxurious crap. She seems extremely reluctant in handing over Linea's half of the gemstones, but is too dazed by the windfall to really attempt anything more than halfhearted sleight-of-hand.

"Sure, boars sound awesome. That's like what my weapon is made for, technically, y'know? Friggin' boars. Though apparently goblins pay better. Crap, do they ever."

At this point, any effort at sarcasm is really token at best. While Sayaka has not regressed to the dryness of wheat crackers, per se, the sauce in her words would barely serve to add a dash of flavor to verbal chicken soup.

"Oh, I'm not looking for any beast in particular," replies Aldern quickly, "But I heard there are some large ones in the forests nearby, and I already convinced the lovely Miss Kaijitsu to make a meal out of anything I bring back."

Ameiko looks a bit confused after hearing this, and responds, "No I di-"

With a wave of his hand, the man interrupts, "Details. Not important."

Turning to the matter at hand with Aldern, her looks puzzled. "This offer to hunt, why is it given? Are you the hunter, Aldern Foxglove? It is the work of the hunter to hunt. Truly you must be a great hunter to give such payment for your rescue."

"Oi, moneybags. Be nice to the pretty chef la- Miss Ameiko." Sake's scowl returns, rubies safely stashed back in her pocket.

"You may have money, but you sure as hell ain't a friggin' gentleman, if that's how you treat ladies that aren't saving your sorry rear end. How 'bout you try cooking the boar, huh?" She pauses, then shrugs.

Linea's slight dislike if this seedy man is quite obvious so she sits and watches him confused by his words. Why hunt if you don't do it yourself and care not for the carcass. Hunting is for glory if food, you desire neither it seems, and we are bound for another place anyhow

First answering Kenshin, the nobleman replies, "You clearly are not from around here, are you? Maybe where you come from, that is the role of a hunter, but here it is a social occasion. One not easily turned down, might I add."

"Ah..." says Aldern, appearing somewhat insulted, but keeping his composure (if you can call it that). "That is a shame, but if you reconsider, I shall be waiting on you outside of the town gates on the Lost Coast Road."

Ameiko gives an annoyed glance toward Aldern as he retreats to his quarters upstairs. "If he actually manages to bring back a boar without getting killed, I'll roast it. For you, of course, not for him."

Ril considers the offer of obtaining nutrients in exchange of bringing the animal to the inevitable death... Maybe the Vessel would be better nourished if he had obtained the sustenance himself? The feeding process was still unclear to the beyonder, but the possibility of aiding the vessel and maybe finding more goblins to eliminate certainly appealed to the exiled reaper

If you decide to go, I will join you says the hulking humanoid to the other fighters before retiring to his own room for the night.

Once in his own quarters, Ril'aielis makes sure of locking and barricating the door with every available object, for no mortal should see the Vessel while he slept and could not protect the Child

Linea shrugged and then smiled as Ameiko made her comment. "Well we'll see how things go tomorrow. I'm curious to see what one of these boar look like."

Sake flashes a genuine smile at Ameiko and shrugs, as if to say that if the innkeeper felt like roasting Aldren instead of the boar, the young warrior would be happy to provide a sturdy spit. Don't be surprised if you get a lot of attention. Not many exciting events happen around here, and you certainly caught just about everyone's attention."

She turns around to her uncle and asks, "By the way, will you be staying with father, Uncle Kenshin?"
