"If you look only into your heart to find your faith, you will lose all grace your feelings have overlooked. So educate thyself." ~ Srun Froh, Theologian of Pelor

Theologians have the duty of not only bowing down to a deity, upholding its laws and preaching its word; they must also embark on an life-long quest of revelation to find out everything there is to know about their god and divinity in general. Also, higher knowledge of the divine allows them higher control over their casting.

Prerequisites

Class: Must have at least 1 level in Cleric. Must still be a Cleric (not ex-cleric).
Spells: Must be able to cast 3rd level divine spells.
Skills: Must have at least 8 ranks in Knowledge (Religion).
Alignment: Any non-chaotic.
Special: Must have a non-chaotic patron deity.

Alignment: Any non-chaotic
Hit Die: d6

Class Skills: Concentration, Craft, Decipher Script, Diplomacy, Forgery, Knowledge (all), Profession, Spellcraft
Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: A Theologian gains proficiency with his deity's favored weapon if he didn't have it already.

Spellcasting: A Theologian casts prepared divine spells much like a cleric, except that to cast spells in domain slots, both his Int and Wis must be equal to at least 10+spell level. Also, the DC of his domain spells uses Int as the relevant modifier, not Wis (other spells remain unchanged).

When a new Theologian level is gained, the character gains new spells per day (and spells known, if applicable) as if he had also gained a level in whatever divine spellcasting class in which he could cast 3rd-level spells before he added the prestige class level. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If a character had more than one divine spellcasting class in which he could cast 3rd-level spells before he became a Theologian, he must decide to which class he adds each level of Theologian for the purpose of determining spells per day.

Deeper Understanding: Due to his comprehensive studies, a Theologian gains a competence bonus to Knowledge (Religion) checks directly related to his deity equal to his class level.

Enhanced Prayer: A Theologian can adjust his prayers to better fit his needs. He can apply metamagic feats to domain spells instantly as if he was a spontaneous caster. The spell must still have been prepared.

Bonus Domain: A level 2 Theologian gains a third domain, and access to its granted power. This domain must be either one of his patron deity's domains or the domain of Knowledge.

Syncretism: When making Knowledge (religion), Knowledge (history), or Knowledge (the planes) checks, add your int mod twice.

Divine Resourcefulness: You gain 1 more domain spell slot per spell level.

Diptych: Right after you pray or meditate for spells, you can write down your spells on a piece of paper as a standard action. Next time you need to pray or meditate for spells, instead of doing that you can just check the paper as a standard action and the spells are prepared instantly. However, you can't change your selection of spells except by another hour of prayer and meditation.

Bonus Feat: At levels 4 and 8 a Theologian can choose to gain a bonus feat from the metamagic feat list. Also at these levels he gains permanent stat boosts to Int and Wis.

Divine Experience: A level 5 Theologian adds both his Int and Wis to the DC of his domain spells.

Indomitable Faith (Su): A Theologian's strong faith based in both revelation and reasoning allows him to shrug off some of the effects of other divine casters. He is treated as having both Evasion and Mettle against divine spells with a caster level equal to or lower than his class level+int mod+wis mod.

Mystical Inquisition (Su): Once per encounter, as a swift action, you can target a mystic within line of sight (mystic is defined as any character who can cast divine spells but does not have a patron deity). Then you must make both a ranged touch attack check and an Int check opposed by the target's Cha check (it doesn't matter what the target's casting stat is). If the ranged touch attack succeeds, the target receives 1d4 damage times your caster level. If it fails, he doesn't receive any damage. If the Int check succeeds, the target's casting is silenced for a number of rounds equal to the difference between the int check and the cha check.

Divine Salvation (Su):Three times per day, if you would fail a save, you can give up a spell slot to increase your result by the level of the spell. Afterwards, for int mod rounds, you will gain a sacred bonus to all your saves equal to the spent spell slot.

Mass (Ex): This ability can be used once per hour, requires a full round action, and lasts for int mod minutes on all creatures affected. You become immune to fear effects. Also, all creatures within 500 feet that have the same patron deity as you gain a bonus to saves against fear effects equal to your class level.

Divine Aptitude (Su):A number of times per day equal to your patron deity's divine rank/4 (rounded down), you can substitute any non-physical (that doesn't have Str, Dex or Con as relevant modifier) skill check result with a Knowledge (Religion) check result.

Detached Casting (Ex): A level 9 Theologian, having studied various beliefs, realizes that there's much ignorance and loss on trivially distinguishing between good and evil powers, when they would serve the same purpose. He can spontaneously cast both cure and inflict spells, and be able to both turn and rebuke undead, regardless of his or his deity's alignment.

Soteriology (Ex): Within 10 minutes of a creature's death, a Theologian can use this ability on it. He must make a Knowledge (Religion) check against a DC of 35 and a Knowledge (The Planes) check against a DC of 20 (you can't take 10 or 20 on either). If both checks are passed, the Theologian can freely choose which afterlife the creature's soul will go to (conversely he can choose this before making the check, and if the chosen afterlife is also the place where the Theologian's patron deity resides, he gains the bonus from Deeper Understanding to both checks). If the creature has an Int of 6 or more, he can oppose the check by making a Will save against a DC equal to the Knowledge (Religion) result. If it fails, it goes wherever the Theologian wants; if it succeeds, it goes to the afterlife it was originally set for.

Universalism: A level 10 Theologian gains access to ALL cleric domains. However, he still only gains the granted power of his first 3.

You may PEACH. I'm also thinking of adding another one, just this time a blend of Cha+Wis instead of Int+Wis.

Class: Must have at least 1 level in Cleric. Must still be a Cleric (not ex-cleric).

How about changing this to having access to Divine Domain spells? Practically the same thing, but allows Homebrew Domain casters access to your class. Of course, that would ruin the wis + int theme of the class, so your call.

Taking a level in theologian permanently modifies your Cleric casting? In addition you should modify this to be more similar in wording to the Loremaster (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/prestigeClasses/loremaster.htm)/Archmage (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/prestigeClasses/archmage.htm) "Spells per Day/ Spells Known" Section As it stands, it doesn't say in your text that you level up your previous casting class.

Enhanced Prayer: A Theologian can adjust his prayers to better fit his needs. He can gain and use metamagic feats as an arcane caster would, but only apply them to spells in domain slots. A divine spell that has been altered with metamagic no longer needs a divine focus, but if it had a somatic component, it becomes prone to spell failure normally.

I don't understand this. Divine casters were always able to use metamagic. There are even feats that boost this (i.e. Divine Metamagic from one of the complete books, which uses up Turning Attempts instead of requiring higher level spell slots)

Divine Aptitude (Su):A number of times per day equal to your patron deity's divine rank/4 (rounded down), you can substitute any non-physical (that doesn't have Str, Dex or Con as relevant modifier) skill check result with a Knowledge (Religion) check result..

Kinda unusual to have your patron's divine rank be a factor. Encourages players to worship the biggest god around, as opposed to the god that fits their character concept best. Recommend changing this instead to be based on class level instead.

Finally, a lot of the abilities here don't list what level they are gained. These are most obvious problems I see. Still I like the concept of the class, it seems fun.

Not really a good idea, since the cleric is the only caster with exactly 1 domain slot per spell level, at least as much as I know.

Taking a level in theologian permanently modifies your Cleric casting?

Yes, and this is intentional.

It lists on the table, but ok, will add.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'm stupid :)). Ok, will be changed with something that makes sense.

It's more flavor than anything, not a huge difference. To have a deity as patron, it must have a DR of at least 5 and at most 19. MOST listed D&D deities have at least 8 though. So the number of uses of the skill realistically can only be 2, 3, or 4.

Finally, a lot of the abilities here don't list what level they are gained. These are most obvious problems I see. Still I like the concept of the class, it seems fun.

They are all listed in the table, and explained chronologically, so...
