I've been practicing doodling OOTS-style figures the last two weeks, but I'm not sure how to render a certain lame pun scene I've been wanting to draw for a while.

I want to draw a guy like this (http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/thumblarge_517/1277956835S9T53M.jpg) or this (http://www.cahanforcitycouncil.com/hello/690446/640/noam%20tefillin%202-2005.06.04-23.51.40.jpg) or this (http://www.bethshalomredbank.org/images/purim/Purim10-layingon.jpg). Ten of them, in fact. I'm not sure where to start. I mean, how do you wind a leather strap around a stick-figure's arm?
Thanks in advance.

P.S. Fun fact: for some reason, tefillin are known in English as phylacteries. Thus making the Jewish lich doubly prepared, I suppose.

One option: do the arms in a more skin-tone color instead of the standard black, and then have a series of black bands down it.

You could also do the actual arms.

I wold stress the tefillin box on the hand and forehead over the strap along the arm, unless the strap is the basis of the pun.

Otherwise, a spiral in dark brown over the black stick arm. It doesn't have to be "tight" to represent the thong. Unless is does. I only took World Religions once, and am not as familiar with Hebrew ceremonies as I would like to be...

Hmm, let me guess. Minion/minyan joke.

Yeah, that and the phylactery thing.

That is a good idea. I just have to figure out how to smoothly put a square box on a curved arm.

(Then on to the tallis challenge...)

I've been playing around with MS Paint and Photoshop, and I've come up with rough template (http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=23lfa89&s=5) of my minyan members.

What do you think? Is it half-way decent?

Okay, David Shaw's Inkscape tutorial is awesome. Inkscape is awesome. Most of the problems I had with Paint and Photoshop are gone.

Here's the final product (http://www.flickr.com/photos/9624983@N05/7003151663/), more or less.

A lot of work for a silly little thing, but I had fun.

Cute! And it looks like almost any class... The rabbi speaking, some paying attention, some... not so much. :smalltongue:
