Right, now that Thanqol has posted up his art (in a general sense, Easy was definately "arty!") for the day for critique, I shall follow suite...

Better? I ended up mostly rebuilding the legs (and the body a bit) from looking back at the articulation - and a horse walking animation. This involved also looking at real horses again. Which, yes, means, in order to get it something like, I did have to spend several minutes literally looking at a horse's arse...

Not put the floaty guns nack this time, since they rather got in the way last time!

I also took, I think it was Even-, sorry, SlyGuy's advice and went more Armoured Fetlock Flares, which I think does look better!

My theory is that the story is about Mask, who has gotten trapped in Spike's Thousand-Year-Dream (probably due to it being so filled with Lies about Rarity and the other ponies). She must figure out what is wrong and slowly destroy the dream from the inside out, in order to stop being Rarity and everyone else in the dream and go back to being Mask.
Once she has gotten spike to admit what he's doing, the truth sets her free.

Also; Regarding who mask is or isn't, I'm reminded of something I said a little while back. "It's Masks all the way down, and they're all true".

Soras - Draw ponies.

I'm not 100% certain that Tiki Snakes is right, but this feels to me like the most coherent explanation for what actually happened in the story. So, good job ripping logical organization out the swirling chaotic maelstrom. Keep up the good work.

Never saw the first pic. Seen the second and I LOVE Pinkie. She is my fav pony (mostly because she seems to be one closest to my heart). Rainbow Dash and AJ are next. Then Twilight, Fluttershy, and Rarity. Of the CMC it has to be Scootaloo and AppleBloom. I like Sweetiebell too. Of the many and many background ponies I have to give it to Spitfire of the Wonderbolts then Derpy. Gods it feels like I still have so much to catch up on.

Umm I have read Cupcakes and My Little Dashie, for what it is worth.

Given the current conversation in the thread, might I recommend you read Thanqol's Your's Truly? (http://thanqol.deviantart.com/art/Yours-Truly-p1-285200467) It's an excellent story and might leave you less confused since we're all talking about Easy as Lying right now, which is set in the same continuity.

That looks a lot better. I think the walking stance and armor look good and the arse looks entirely reasonable given the power armored covering. Your time was well spent. The headpiece of the armor looks slightly odd though, and actually makes me think of a cow, which I think is partially due to the length of the snout and partially due to the top reminding me of horns.

Yeah, not overly happy with that myself. Unfortunately, that is about the best I can do, given the material limitations; i.e. can't make 'em thinner than 1mm. Which makes doing thin curvy things like horns extremely hard, and nearly impossible on a small figure like that.

(It's sort of designed as a box shape which covers the pointing-foward-over-the-eyes horns, and the ears and the pointing-backward-over-the-ears horns. At larger scale, I'd probably model them more accurately and as seperate bits.)

I might have another look another day, see if I can shave another 0.1 or 0.2mm off. The absolute, absolute limit is 0.7mm; I design to 1mm, because it gives me a bit of maneouvering room. This may be one of those times I have get a bit closer to that. But I'm not sure how close I've actually gotten with that already, though.

In some I tried to recreate the original vector, in others was more of a touchup. That said, I saw them on your deviantArt earlier. The Dash one definitely needs to have used a font different than Arial or whatever that is, and probably not overlapping the mane (though it looks fine, even great, on the Pinkie and Twi images).

EDIT: Any chance Brohoof could be a bit smaller, like 200x200 or so, for use as a reaction image?

Yep, the original images are for making pins, that's the reason for the overlapping text. I didn't deem the RD one good enough for a wallpaper, which that's what the the ones I tried to post are. I'm editing the links right now.

Picasa (https://picasaweb.google.com) is not a Google drive, it's their image hosting service. I host nearly all images from OPs and such on my account and the links didn't budged in years...

See my very first OP (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=191743) for example, post is locked so I couldn't have changed it even if I tried :smalltongue:

Been using Tinypic for the most part since, but not sure about image size restrictions because I haven't done anything that needed those resolutions in a long time.

Are they actually fighting, or like being generally crazy? I think Tas and Pinkie would get along too well to be in any sort of confrontation.

Not fighting but more of who would destroy the sanity of their friends first?

Do we have MLP Dragonlance crossovers?

Because they need to be a thing. Twilight is Raistlin, Spike is Caramon, Rarity is Tika, Pinkie Pie is Tas, Applejack is... Flint or Sturm, I guess? Hard to say... Fluttershy is... hmm. Rainbow Dash is Tanis.

Well, I can't even match all of them to the Heroes of the Lance. There are a lot of characters though, hmm lets see.

Gilda is Kitiara, Celestia is Goldmoon, Luna is... blank, Trixie is Dalamar.

This didn't turn out as expected, but it should still be a thing. I think so, at least.

Personally I have FlutterDash as my OTP and absolutely despise FlutterMac. Best episode? Likely Return of Harmony for me though I have to admit Hurricane Fluttershy is amazing.

The best original image that I could find was 200x200 pixels, a linear resizing to 800x800 obviously difused the edges a lot.
Since I was going for the vector look it was a no go.
So with a Bronie Magic Wand (that is magic wand with maximum tolerance) I polarized the differences making a smooth line. This worked great for the 800x800 version (the Pin version) that's on dA. When I resized it again for the wallpapers I kinda liked the scaled look, but I might redo the "vectory" trick for the big sized ones. What do you think?

TBH it still looks a little like a cow, but without going for realistic horseface or losing the Horns, I think that's always going to be an issue with the helme, especially on the models rather than line-art concepts.

I would love to be able to do something like that. Unfortunately, the problem is the taper itself. On your pictures, the narrowness from front to back is (i.e the taper looking from the right hand side of the pony) going to be less than the wall thickness. You can get away with that sort of prism, to a point, but generally, the trouble is it has to be come to a point in about 0.5mm or less height from a 1mm base to qualify as a "surface feature" - which will print - and bot a "wall" which won't.

I am going to have another play with the head again - both you and Siosilvar have given me some ideas on some other things to try, but what's getting me here is the small size running right into the wall thickness issues, unfortunately, and a crude approximation of some sort is all I'm going to be able to do within that limitation. (If I was doing them at 25mm (twice the size), the horns could be the same actual size (1mm), but half the relative size to the head and it'd be much easier to get it to look right.)

The taper is probably exaggerated in the picture from the original concept, but then you're more familiar with the scale, so I'll leave that for you to figure out or consider.

EQD is a great suggestion, as is Fimfiction. I try to avoid My Little Brony since they just take other artist's work and repost it without credit. I tend to prefer the r/mlp subreddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/mylittlepony/) for a quick aggregation of the latest MLP fan content. As for music, I can recommend a couple dozen artists (my MLP playlist is up to about 150 songs at this point, and I'm pretty picky) or if you just want to jump straight into the deep end of that particular pool there's the MLP Music Archive (http://mlpmusicarchive.com/)

I used to use Imageshack, back before they changed it so that you can't link the picture without it forcing a hyperlink back to Imageshack and related other cheek.
For what it's worth, they actually have had a direct link to copy and paste for years that didn't force a hyperlink. Only a while ago did they make that only visible to registered members, before that, they just kinda snuck it around a hidey-hole to make it non-obvious to find. Better? I ended up mostly rebuilding the legs (and the body a bit) from looking back at the articulation - and a horse walking animation. This involved also looking at real horses again. Which, yes, means, in order to get it something like, I did have to spend several minutes literally looking at a horse's arse...

Not put the floaty guns nack this time, since they rather got in the way last time!

I also took, I think it was Even-, sorry, SlyGuy's advice and went more Armoured Fetlock Flares, which I think does look better!

Your design has improved markedly o' dead-y one. Quite usable in every regard. And while still a touch heavy for my own taste it looks more naturally so this time which is much better.

I managed to get it up to 1200x1200 before it stopped working (well, the next size up I tried was 1600x1600 and that didn't work, and 40x40 didn't work either). Looks like the server generates a .png based off the original vector. I'd recommend re-hosting it someplace that won't unduly burden them.

(I went to the original t-shirt page via the link on Z's dA page, and found an image of the shirt design. There was a ",width=190,height=190" in the link, so I changed the numbers and it worked. Well, it actually only takes width into account, but still.)

God I hated writing this story. And I also really enjoyed writing this story. I can hardly articulate what the process felt like. On one level, I comprehensively hate every single thing about it and feel like I've wasted my time on a quixotic, pointless attempt to tell a story that had no need to be told. And yet, on the other hand, writing this story provoked a deep, bitter, complicated anger and disgust which has been a constant companion for the past few months and has provided a fascinating backdrop to everything else I've done recently. If nothing else, the emotion for how I felt writing this story is worth examination in a story of it's own.

Is it comprehensible? I dunno. Is it cliche? I dunno. Is it worth the time of any sentient entity to read? I dunno. What am I trying to say with this story? I dunno. What am I trying to say right now? I dunno.

For better or for worse, this was a story with a plan, and I've successfully realised the plan as it was in my head. This is what I imagined it to be. I still don't know if it was a plan worth executing, but I needed to try because the idea would never have gone away otherwise.

So. Ponythread. Please answer some of my questions. I've made a thing and I am completely incapable of assessing it objectively. Please, read my story and give me some perspective. I desperately need your help.

Thoughts:
From a personal standpoint, I enjoyed it. It hit a nice balance of weirdness and normalcy that these sorts of mind-bendy stories thrive on. I have to say I did not see the ending coming at all, but still felt pleasantly surprised by it. There's a point to all the weirdness, and getting that point makes all the discomfort worthwhile. As far as comprehensibility goes, the only time I felt lost was when Rarity and Luna defeated the dragon. The clashing perspectives made it difficult to follow, but I think that was the point. I also didn't pick up on the same mane colors, but I did pick up on the grey coats, so there's that. My biggest complaint would have to be the gag at the end. Yes, it's funny, but we've just had an entire story about "people are more than our preconceptions about them", and then we have Rarity acting exactly as Spike would expect her to act. Seems a little dissonant to what the story was trying to say.

With that much being said, I highly suspect the reason I enjoyed it is because I had so much background knowledge to work with. I know Mask, Long Distance is fresh in my mind, and I've heard you wonder about parts of this story while it was being written. I can't help but think that without this background knowledge I wouldn't have been able to enjoy this story like I did. I may have been lost as to the whole 'Professor Sparkle' bit, maybe even chalking that up to the general weirdness of the story and not the continuity. But more importantly, Mask's appearance may have seemed really odd. Seeing how I don't have these feelings, it's hard to say what would have to be changed. Maybe some clearer transition between Rarity and Mask, right now it's a rather cold cut from Rarity to "the pony in the mask". But that worked for me, so would that work for a fresh set of eyes? I don't know, I've got too much background information to make that call.

What I think you need to do is show this to some people outside this forum. Link them to Long Distance, tell them this story is in that continuity, and see what they think. I hear talk that /fic/ is good for this sort of thing. I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but for what it's worth, I think I see what it is you're getting across.

An insight that occurs to me is that in writing this story, you bumped into a small piece of dreamstuff and madness, and captured it in a story. Some writers have done this before, writing dark passages of text that would make Lovecraft proud.
It would certainly explain why it was so strange to write, why it defies easy description, and why it seems to chip at sanity when read.

I would agree with the core of this sentiment. It feels like a story which wrote me rather than the other way around.

I said this before, and I'll say it again. This is a story that communicates emotionally but not logically. You're a fan of Aristotle, so hopefully when I say that this hits pathos and ethos, but not logos you know what I mean. I'm actually a little bit concerned about the ethos though. You're known in ponythread and I think a lot of this story hinges on your status as an author (and a tiny bit on your OC if I even barely understood some of that ending). This means that EQD or Fimfiction readers may not respond as well as ponythread because they simply don't know you.

In other words, the story in and of itself doesn't do the greatest job of telling me about its author. This is too bad because I think it's a better story when you know the author's viewpoint on life and on lies.

Emotionally, I'd articulate the feeling as a combination of fear, rage, confusion, and curiosity. It's the curiosity that's the lynchpin of the story in my opinion because fear+rage+confusion alone comes out more or less as "BLARHGHFDHAF."

Okay, so you didn't make that many changes to the part that I already read, so I just skimmed that part. If there was a decivise and critical change prior to the first Luna scene, I didn't see it.

The follow-up to the Luna scene (removing the burst of light, putting Rarity in more extreme positions) was quite well executed. Putting her in her most divine fantasies and watching her absolutely reject them, particularly taking away Sweetie Belle's wrong-color hair, was a combination of horror and a sense of freedom. I shouldn't be rooting for Rarity when she does that, but I kind of was.

You did lose me with the scene that I presume to be Spike talking with one of your OCs (mask I guess, or maybe Jayden, I don't really know, probably mask cuz of the whole mask discussion). I think that was actually the weakest scene of the story because it's a non-reveal reveal. Again, maybe you're trying to frustrate the reader with that, but it's certainly setting up expectations and then never giving out the payoff.

The ending itself did sort of close things up, though I stopped really following the quotation marks and italics beyond a sense of knowing when somepony different was speaking. Resolving into a Spike sort of fantasy ship was interesting for a few seconds, but it's weird because I actually don't care about Spike at all from the entire setup of the story up to that point. I mean, it's fanfiction, so you can just appeal to people who like Spike anyway, but this particular story gives you no reason to have any interest in Spike at any point. I also don't actually know why Rarity had her hair get dusty at the end. I mean, we basically got an entire character study on Rarity and I still kind of lost my suspension of disbelief when she did that. Again, possibly intended since it puts the reader exactly where Spike is at that moment and then ends the story.

I stand by my belief that your technical skill in the craft is high. You make beautiful scenes, with the Rainbow Dash song still being my favorite. I also think that every scene with Luna in this story is excellent and Luna comes across as powerful, dark, and mysterious in a way that, to me, absolutely fits with how she should be.

However, I'm going to leave you with a quote from Brian Clevinger's 8-bit theater, courtesy of Black Mage. Only because I know you can take it. "This whole goddamn adventure has been nothing but pointless build ups toward pay offs that never happen."

Should start by saying that I haven't followed this story's creation at all, so I went in blank. I tend to prefer that, because I rarely read things more than once (except my own stories)

After the first section I was all ready to call Rarity's characterization completely off, that she'd never react like that, ever! Now I feel cheated :smallredface: And yet slightly clever for having caught the discrepancy, which I have to think was absolutely intentional and delightfully subtle.

After that I just read it with growing confusion. At more than one point I thought the proper word to describe it was "discordant" and then, as if on cue, Discord was mentioned. Very surreal.

The ending was... unexpected. Early on I figured it was probably the CMC trying to tell a collaborative tale and disagreeing about the particulars, revising constantly as they went along. Then Discord, and then, finally, I'm no longer sure if I can even trust the ending.

In some ways I liked it. I just felt like I couldn't really immerse myself in it because I started out with completely wrong expectations and they weren't changed soon enough to fit what the story really was. If that makes sense. It wasn't until the very end that I finally glimpsed some meaning behind the madness, and then immediately got the feeling that to really appreciate the story I really ought to start over and read it again.

I liked the dark undertones in some places, very inspiring too. There was a Lovecraftian feel to some of the later parts, something "discordant" as I said, a madness which I think would have been nice throughout, from the start. Or perhaps I just missed some subtle madness in the beginning.

Rarity cutting Sweetie's mane was chilling, in a good way. I loved the little detail about pegasi singing, I may have to steal that.

It's hard to critique this because I get the feeling maybe I'm totally missing the point. I hope the above makes sense and maybe helps. If not... well, it was interesting, in its own way :smallsmile:

Easy as Lying:

I admit to feeling confused, uncertain, and slightly disturbed at this one. Add the annoyance of not (yet) knowing what exactly bothers me about it and you have something I did not enjoy reading much at all. I'll be thinking on this as I type, as well as re-reading certain parts, so the commentary may be a little steam-of-though-ish. I'll try to edit it a bit.

First, the good. You write well, and create emotion and sensation with skill. This is good, and is very obvious in this piece. You have a good handle on characters voices, and I haven't found my disbelief broken by an out-of-place word or phrase. I'm not sure this second thing is good in this story. As in, should I be feeling certain characters are out of character?

Next, the confusing:

As much as I can understand it, this takes place in the Yours Truly continuity, a few (hundred? thousand?) years later, right about when Spike finally wakes up from his sleep referred to in the letters.

Apparently, he's been sleeping and Mask (a character I'm only very vaguely familiar with, is the reader supposed to know anything about this individual?) has... substituted herself for everypony who isn't Rarity (Ok, yeah. Everypony has a grey coat and orange mane. That took me rather too long to pick up on. Was it present in the prior drafts? Must have been.) in the dream? The whys and whens seem irrelevant. I'm fine with that. So. Mask is apparently "acting" everypony's part without changing her colours. Rarity, being the fashionista she she eventually realises somethings wrong due to her dresses clashing awfully with Mask's colours. She rebels, the dream tries to adapt to her paranoia, they have a bit of tug-of-war and, uh, halfway through the dénouement dream!Rarity is Mask. Or vice-versa. Or maybe she was Mask all along? Or something else? And then Spike wakes up and everything is fine.

Yeah. This is confusing. very confusingly presented. I'm still not sure what's with:

-The Groundhog Day "it's always Twi's birthday" thing.
-The perma-storm. May represent a trouble psyche, maybe it's just Spike wanting to see more Wet Mane Rarity. In case of the latter, don't really blame him.
-Who is talking to whom between the quotes that denote the dream... Either Spike correcting Mask on certain details, or vice-versa. To me, appears to be the former, then the latter, then clearly the former. Ok yeah. Italics is Spike.
-Is Spike not in control of the dream? Some of his lines suggest as much. Other suggest the contrary. Ties into prior point.
-Why Rarity is allowed to become hungry, tired and exhausted in the first dream. By rights, Spike wouldn't allow for this, and I didn't see Mask interfering. Ties into prior point.
-Why, how and when does Mask decide to disrupt the dream. Ok the when is less relevant due to flexible time in dreams. The why and how bears examining. UGHUGHughughughuguhgbluh. I just don't know if it's important or not. Chalk another point in "this story needs to know what it is"
-Why Luna everything. Seriously. The explanation given by Luna as is a) a lie and b) doesn't make sense anyway.

Lessee what more I can wrangle out of this... The shifts in tone. That's cool. Subtle. Also a big reason the story sits so poorly, I believe. Starts funny, goes weird, springboards onto creepy, does a triple somersault and dives into confusion. Emerges from the metaphorical pool and staggers into a deckchair of heartwarming, wondering what the hell just happened and why it's not feeling very comfy. The reason being it's dinner is trying to escape it's tummy, but I'm now sure how that maps back out of the metaphor. Maybe it's just literal. Too many shifts and swerves in too little space, perhaps. You don't really notice it's happened for a bit so you're feeling all uneasy about something you can't put your finger on until you accept the new tone but woops! Too late. Tone shifted again and you didn't see it happen.

Now, if you intended to create a weird, confusing and rather creepy bit of kinda vignette fiction, good job! If you wanted to tell an actual story, with things like characters, motivation, and plot (of either sort, hurrr) I don't think so. By my estimate, you hid it too well under the confusion and misdirection. Then again, since you yourself don't seem to be sure what exactly you were making, my suggestion is sitting down, reading the whole thing again and re-examining your motivation regarding this piece. My guess? You want too many things out of this story. You want an adventure featuring Rarity getting a happy ending. You want to do something experimental. You want to use Mask as a primary... antagonist, I think? These things have been combined in an interesting way, yes. But definitely not in a way I would care to read again.

I'd like to address the ending, and particularly Mask's speech, but I honestly have no idea what to make of it. Presumably, it's a load of bollocks she's feeding Spike. If it isn't... Eh. I dunno. I'll chalk it down to another genre swerve.

Anyway, those are my .02€ and you can make of 'em what you will.

EDIT: Tiki Snakes comparison to a creepy-pasta is very germane. Add that to the big list o' genres/tones you cover here.

Oh, and one last thing. If you're trolling the readers, my hat goes off to you good sir. :smalltongue:

See, I disagree with you on one point - I didn't want too many things out of the story, I wanted exactly one thing out of the story. I wanted to provoke an emotional reaction. The major idea behind this was "Writing should make people feel something". I wanted to communicate rage, disgust, and doubt, I wanted to communicate insufficiency. I wanted to communicate what it feels like to be a bad author.

The more of these reviews I read, the more convinced I become I have totally succeeded in this core objective. I have communicated the emotion I wanted to communicate perfectly. The emotion is not a pleasant one.

But there are a lot of valid points and valid flaws, mentioned here, a fair amount of streamlining and restructuring will be necessary.

My theory is that the story is about Mask, who has gotten trapped in Spike's Thousand-Year-Dream (probably due to it being so filled with Lies about Rarity and the other ponies). She must figure out what is wrong and slowly destroy the dream from the inside out, in order to stop being Rarity and everyone else in the dream and go back to being Mask.
Once she has gotten spike to admit what he's doing, the truth sets her free.

Also; Regarding who mask is or isn't, I'm reminded of something I said a little while back. "It's Masks all the way down, and they're all true".

I can neither confirm nor deny this theory with reference to the final sentence.

Thoughts:
From a personal standpoint, I enjoyed it. It hit a nice balance of weirdness and normalcy that these sorts of mind-bendy stories thrive on. I have to say I did not see the ending coming at all, but still felt pleasantly surprised by it. There's a point to all the weirdness, and getting that point makes all the discomfort worthwhile. As far as comprehensibility goes, the only time I felt lost was when Rarity and Luna defeated the dragon. The clashing perspectives made it difficult to follow, but I think that was the point. I also didn't pick up on the same mane colors, but I did pick up on the grey coats, so there's that. My biggest complaint would have to be the gag at the end. Yes, it's funny, but we've just had an entire story about "people are more than our preconceptions about them", and then we have Rarity acting exactly as Spike would expect her to act. Seems a little dissonant to what the story was trying to say.

With that much being said, I highly suspect the reason I enjoyed it is because I had so much background knowledge to work with. I know Mask, Long Distance is fresh in my mind, and I've heard you wonder about parts of this story while it was being written. I can't help but think that without this background knowledge I wouldn't have been able to enjoy this story like I did. I may have been lost as to the whole 'Professor Sparkle' bit, maybe even chalking that up to the general weirdness of the story and not the continuity. But more importantly, Mask's appearance may have seemed really odd. Seeing how I don't have these feelings, it's hard to say what would have to be changed. Maybe some clearer transition between Rarity and Mask, right now it's a rather cold cut from Rarity to "the pony in the mask". But that worked for me, so would that work for a fresh set of eyes? I don't know, I've got too much background information to make that call.

What I think you need to do is show this to some people outside this forum. Link them to Long Distance, tell them this story is in that continuity, and see what they think. I hear talk that /fic/ is good for this sort of thing. I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but for what it's worth, I think I see what it is you're getting across.

These are good points and hit on the heart of what I feel like I need to do next. I'm going to leave it for a while, because I've got this... buzz, this kind of bizarre satisfaction that'd need it's own incomprehensible story to tell.

Granted, their decision to barge into my fiancé’s dress fitting while fleeing was something of a tactical blunder, and the fact that one of them managed to get blood on her dress certainly didn’t help matters. If it makes you feel any better, I’m going to have to rewire that entire section of the ship since the interior wiring wasn’t designed to handle levels of heat capable of vaporizing assassin teams.

I was tempted into backsliding to my old OFC habits, targeting Silent Night of course, who subsequently lost his legs in a teleportation accident while trying to avoid the blast. In retaliation, he sent a musical hit squad after me, whom Igor and my fiancé dispatched. Now, we’re all enjoying a movie Igor put together for Silent Night showing said hit squad having more of a fighting chance than they really did.

Anyway, still trying to get acclimated to my new place and new roommates. Kind of hard. Excited for BronyCon soon. The guest list shows Tara, Andrea, and the rest as guests, but I wonder if they're going to be there as guests, or be people wandering around. I really really wanna meet Tara. She's one of the reasons (Billy West and Rob Paulson being the others) I really want to get into voice acting. Probably a hard thing to get into, kind of requires being in the right location, and having at least a little natural talent, which I most certainly do not. Anyway, almost yay.

Anyway, still trying to get acclimated to my new place and new roommates. Kind of hard. Excited for BronyCon soon. The guest list shows Tara, Andrea, and the rest as guests, but I wonder if they're going to be there as guests, or be people wandering around. I really really wanna meet Tara. She's one of the reasons (Billy West and Rob Paulson being the others) I really want to get into voice acting. Probably a hard thing to get into, kind of requires being in the right location, and having at least a little natural talent, which I most certainly do not. Anyway, almost yay.

I can confirm that voice acting isn't something that's easy to get into based on my best friend's experiences in the field. He was picked up by one of the best voice coaches in the industry, has an immense amount of natural talent (supposedly he's at or close to Robin Williams in that regard), and he's still just breaking into the business.

Don't take it personally, dude, but we really have tried to expand your horizons and explain what we're all about around here. And I give you full credit for the baby steps you have taken. But how many of your posts are talking about you and how much you don't like ponies or how difficult you're finding it to come up with a way to be accepted? What are we supposed to do with that, beyond looking at it and saying 'huh, yep, that sucks"?

No, it's barely more than a passing thought right now. I'm just not particularly good at anything, and rarely get interested enough in anything. I'm on the bottom of the scale for natural talent though. Except, I feel like it's some kind of mental block. I have a fairly bad voice for singing/voices, but I feel there's something there. Anyway, being just moved and not having a job, and having other stuff to take care of before then, it's a long way from classes, And this thing is freaking $200 (though if it's attempting to replace classes, which I'd rather have a live teacher, then I guess I understand the cost) http://www.voicestarz.com/

I can confirm that voice acting isn't something that's easy to get into based on my best friend's experiences in the field. He was picked up by one of the best voice coaches in the industry, has an immense amount of natural talent (supposedly he's at or close to Robin Williams in that regard), and he's still just breaking into the business.

That comparison makes me rather suspicious personally. Just saying it would help to name one of the many talented actual voice actors.

Hahaha oh that's hilarious. Mostly because it was posted by our very own Jakhaivah and was actually linked in ponythread eons ago. Like when the threads were in the single digits. Nothing new under the sun and all that.

Also, personally I loved Pinkie and the Brain. They had several very good jokes, and the back and forth between the two was surprisingly intelligent. Plus, that one episode where Brain actually could have taken over the world but wasn't trying so was oblivious to the whole thing was spectacular and isn't terribly inaccurate for how to naturally lead people.

See, I disagree with you on one point - I didn't want too many things out of the story, I wanted exactly one thing out of the story. I wanted to provoke an emotional reaction. The major idea behind this was "Writing should make people feel something". I wanted to communicate rage, disgust, and doubt, I wanted to communicate insufficiency. I wanted to communicate what it feels like to be a bad author.

I wanted to add, the feeling I got from this story was indeed something like that. Like how it is when you're writing a story and you don't really know where it's going, you make things up as you go along and it may not fit previous events well or the characters might change all the time. I sometimes felt a bit like that with MitM. It was why I thought at one point it might be the CMC telling a story.

I really think it's important to know that this story follows Yours Truly. I had suspicions with the "Professor Sparkle" and Hoofington bits, but it never really occurred to me to me that it was... more than just little nods at that story. I wasn't reminded of what happened with Rarity and Spike in that story. Maybe that was just me being dense :smalltongue:

When you take that into account it begins to make sense, it becomes slightly comprehensible. And extremely sad. I think the bit with Rarity and Spike was possibly the saddest part of Yours Truly, as I remember it at least. The realization that this story takes place hundreds of years later, with all their friends gone and replaced by fading memories that aren't at all like the real ponies ... that's horrible, and the kind of horrible that is too good to be lost to the reader because they didn't read the first story.

But then I look at the ending of Easy as Lying, and it seems way too cheery for such a sad story. Did you not intend it to be so sad?

I really get the feeling a re-reading of this is in order. I rarely do that, but maybe I'll make an exception for this one.

The more of these reviews I read, the more convinced I become I have totally succeeded in this core objective. I have communicated the emotion I wanted to communicate perfectly. The emotion is not a pleasant one.

Second. Interesting. I won't doubt you when you say that you have successfully transmitted the emotions you wished to trasmit. I will note, however, that the particular mix of emotions in Easy as Lying does not match up with my own emotions of... insufficient creative ability, shall we say? Mostly, there is much more embarassment, and a whole lot less anger and doubt. Just an observation, I'm not sure if a relevant one.

Third. Stories intending negative emotional impact tend to advertise the fact, because even people who like this sort of thing (tragedy, horror) like to know what they're walking into, if only in very general terms. Tag this one carefully once you publish. But I don't have to tell you that, neh?

But there are a lot of valid points and valid flaws, mentioned here, a fair amount of streamlining and restructuring will be necessary.

Glad I could help some. I'll actually be happy to read further drafts, although I don't think I can approach this in any other way that I would a particularly intriguing puzzle, an intellectual excerise. Which would make my input rather less valuable, given that the goal is emotional reaction.

I'll do my best to make it suitable for public consumption.

Anyway, still trying to get acclimated to my new place and new roommates. Kind of hard. Excited for BronyCon soon. She's one of the reasons (Billy West and Rob Paulson being the others) I really want to get into voice acting. We tried, but we just kept getting errors. Then we looked ahead far enough and, as it turns out, your not in the future. I am not sure exactly what that means either.

It means that he finally agreed to that game of Calvin ball in 2147, and like I says in the contract he can't leave until I win.

So far we are at... 37 solid years of non continuous time. And each game takes maybe two hours. Oddly, not my biggest losing streak.

I used slightly the wrong words before. It's the anger an experienced writer feels for a story that isn't working right. Knowing that you have done better and should be doing better. It's a particular flavour of the sentiment I'm very familiar with.

But, as with Yours Truly, I'm able to view the entire emotional concept from a fundamentally different light after writing this story. I've made peace with my anger, in a sense? Useful. It's a curiously effective way to work through thoughts that trouble me.

I feel like there should be more of an intellectual component than there is currently; I want to make some of the themes more clearly defined and less frustrating and work out more elegant ways to tie it together. I feel like the ending should be slightly frustrating but predominately satisfying. Something to work on idly.

I think you bring a lot of the Sad with you, I'm not convinced it is provided by the Fic itself, Deadly. Hence the mood whiplash you're experiencing at the end, there.
For comparison, I can't help but visualise the the song "The Boys are Back in Town" in negative, melancholy ways like a man talking to the grave of his old friend, or to a guy in a terminal-illness-hospital or something, which is almost certainly not the intended mental image.

That's quite possible, which is why I wondered if Thanqol actually intended it to be sad. Regardless of whether this particular story was meant to be sad, I think the underlying events are very, very sad if you think about them.

See, here's the thing: you've communicated an unpleasant emotion, several in fact, and because of that, I actually don't want to read any more of your stories. I never read Yours Truly because it sounded like something I wouldn't enjoy (I accidently read some spoilers for it that put me off completely) and after reading Deadly's comments on the continuity, I can guess that this was justified. You've actually put me off here.

Now, I know that I will probably read more of your stories in the future, I know I read and enjoyed The Old Stories, but I'll have to agree with Sly here:

First and formost, I have already been removed from the ground. It is unfortunate, yes, but I am out of the ground.

Secondly, I generaly think the usage of colored text indicates a role-play post. But if it bothers anyone else...

Bah, they're nothing but a pack of useless showboats, the bulk of the superstructure is nothing but a waste of material. I could produce *turns around* three...four...five...six equally lethal cannons with the same amount of material, all simultaneously operable by one talanted unicorn, instead of needing a crew of unicorns for each.

What, don't tell me you're surprised I can outgun your entire hit squad by a factor of six without exerting myself; after all, I was one of Princess Celestia's students once.

Honestly, I'm keeping out of the entire dressmaking operation. She insists it's against tradition for me to see it before the wedding, and I'm not quite crazy enough to argue the point.

Ehh, they struck me as showponies that are realy, realy good at killing things. That cannon/tank/industrial rock crusher they have has presumably gained them many, many kills. After all, you saw how that thing worked. If you where a fellon and that was on your tail, do you think you would be in your right mind? The constant singing hardly helps.

Also, good luck on the relationship. I am slightly ashamed to admit I never got her name: Infernia was too busy hugging everything to tell me much about her home life. (Besides Shargat, but he hardly matters now.)

See, here's the thing: you've communicated an unpleasant emotion, several in fact, and because of that, I actually don't want to read any more of your stories. I never read Yours Truly because it sounded like something I wouldn't enjoy (I accidently read some spoilers for it that put me off completely) and after reading Deadly's comments on the continuity, I can guess that this was justified. You've actually put me off here.

Now, I know that I will probably read more of your stories in the future, I know I read and enjoyed The Old Stories, but I'll have to agree with Sly here:

You need to tell people what they're getting into.

I should emphasise that this is by far the most artsy and meta story I've ever done and it has little to no bearing on any of the rest of my work! I know for sure my next story won't be anything like this.

It's a story I wrote for me, basically. Sorry if it soured you.

Ehh its probably the least of the songs in the FiM. Not bad really at all just still about what you'd expect from an American intro.

The rest get increasingly... theatrical. Like seriously some of these could come out of a musical somewhere, a highly rated broadway musical.

I'll admit I've enjoyed what I've watched past that first couple of minutes...

I'm not a fan of most new intros. The 2003 TMNT Intro for the first 3 seasons was perfect. Then they felt like changing the lyrics, rather than just the art used, and I feel like they shouldn't have... it's a bit... corny.

But yeah, that intro makes me feel uncomfortable.

It's not like you can compare gravity with a mental compulsion. My Little Pony simply has a tendency to get stuck in your head. I think it's the distinct characters and simple themes. And once you do get into it the community is exceptionally creative and friendly. So, there's a tendency to view it as an inevitability that, if you're already interested enough to post here, you're going to be into it.

Probably reasonably feasible. At least it is for me in the UK, as I have more than one DVD from Austrailia, since they are, for example, the only ones with enough sense to release Earthworm Jim on DVD. (Heck, I have to get most of my DVDS from the States anyway for the same reason.)

I have to agree. There are bad puns and BAD puns. Those somehow managed to be both.

Also they left out the part with the other mane ponies (Big adventure! Tons of fun! etc.) which is the best part. Unforgivable.

I should emphasise that this is by far the most artsy and meta story I've ever done and it has little to no bearing on any of the rest of my work! I know for sure my next story won't be anything like this.

It's a story I wrote for me, basically. Sorry if it soured you.
I feel really bad for saying it, and I debated for a long time if I should. I figured I ought to get it off my chest though.

It's been tricky with me and the Cap'n. We like getting each other pony memorabilia, but we gotta be stealthy about it. Some of our family would give us no end of grief should we be discovered. We've become quite good at picking out the more abstract pony pieces; he's got a grey t-shirt simply adorned with a few bubbles. For the rest, we just know where to properly stash them where they won't be discovered. My Pinkie Pie figurine gets to travel with me in my backpack pretty much all the time.

No pony swag yet, being we are fairly green, but there is an incoming convention and we'll probably buy some for us.

With our penchant for embracing whatever we wish, our families know better than to show negative opinions regarding our tastes.

I was looking for birthday presents for my best friend, and I searched 20 different stores before calling it quits, looking for DVDs and other things she might like. I settled on the Friendship Express dvd and a Rainbowdash Brony Shirt.

It's been tricky with me and the Cap'n. We like getting each other pony memorabilia, but we gotta be stealthy about it.

That's kinda cute/romantic in a very weird fan-of-the-show kind of way. My family and friends know my daughter and I are big show fans so for us its not really an issue to hid anything from them. More like an issue to hide our stuff from each other!

It was kinda painful, having to clarify that they weren't for me, and that I was just getting it for a friend. >.< But she seemed to like them, and her smile made up for it big time. ^_^

Cool that she liked it. If you want a sure-fire way to prevent anyone from asking questions when you buy MLP merch, carry a small child with you. I find that as long as my daughter is with me, no one asks questions.
Heck, one time I was looking at adult sized MLP shirts and this store worker walks buy asking "Aww, your kid a big MLP fan? I don't ususally see the dads out her buying their kids the pony stuff. Brave man!"
Totally didn't get exactly where we were standing I guess?

...so yeah. Like a charm. :smallsmile: I've even loaned my daughter to a friend twice and it worked for him.

Everyone from GitP could simply print out a picture of threadchan and pin her to their cloths. You could even do your avatar on one arm and threadchan on the other, so people are recognizable at a distance.

don't worry. The show will likely catch you attention on its own merits and the fandom really is quite nice. The crazy is just for our own amusement. Also we can get very deep in this thread off the most random of subjects.
