Midnight is an OC created by a ponythreader called "EsperDerek", who was created in a bonus chapter to a Twilight/Trixie fanfic he wrote called Out In The Cold. She was their daughter (Genderbending was involved, and I think Luna might also be one of her parents, it's a long story.) He made a sequel or two to that story starring Midnight. Nowadays he frequents the IRC.

I think it's important to note that ponies do not appear to have surnames at all. So far only the Cakes have shared a last name and really it's more of a theme then a name.

That sounds similar to how my wife views the show. She's watched about a dozen episodes and thinks it can be cute, but she sees no fuss about the show nor does she bother with exploring fan works. The one thing she seems to kinda get into is the Hub channel promo song for "Equestian Girls".
Instant earworm to her.
And there's nothing really wrong with that, I just personally feel that the community aspect is a big part of being a brony. Maybe I'll show her Equestria Girls then, and perhaps explain a few fandom memes like Derpy and human-obssessed Lyra.

I think it was simply that Charger was a character made by Thanqol who Maxtronaut then got permission to write into his story. The two characters have their own timelines/storylines etc. I don't know much more than that since I haven't read the fanfic yet.

Congrats on getting your package! I would suggest that duskponies, since V talks about them as an underdark race, would also be underground dwellers in Equestria. We know now that there is an extensive cave network beneath Canterlot. It stands to reason that Twilight and Cadence only really explored the upper levels, since they were looking for a way out. So, if they went back and started really digging into the mountain, perhaps they would find an extensive underground tunnel network, with its own underground kingdom of duskponies?

Perhaps Luna's bat-eared guards are duskponies? I've always assumed they were just regular pegasi dressed up, but they seem like obvious duskponies, now that I come to think about it. And bats live in caves

We stopped halfway through Griffon the Brush-Off because she was "ponied out" Her exact words.

She knows portions of the opening theme now, flipped out when she saw Derpy say "Muffins" and enjoys Pinkie's pinkiness.

Oh, she also asked if she was a brony now, I said that she was technically a Pegasister. She went "Blegh, Brony is cooler." :smallbiggrin:

Okay, a couple of Ponythread-Historical Questions that have been bugging me for a while;
What's up with there being multiple Chargers anyway?
Also what was this whole Midnight thing? It's way before my time, but it always struck me as either an important part of Ponythread history or at least the biggest Noodle Incident.

As was explained before, Maxtronaut asked me if he could use Charger in a story he was planning on writing and I said yes. The characters have diverged significantly at this point.

This is especially the case because the Charger in my head is not a consistent, individual character as much as a major thought pattern - she's a combination of PonyCharger, Candice Walker, Ten Feather Quill and several other characters existing in a rather inconsistent protoconceptual stage. My Charger is, essentially, my focused, dedicated, and analytical side - and also the spiteful, haughty and isolationist aspect of my personality. The corollary of this is that my Charger doesn't really experience consistent character development or growth because her story hasn't started yet; she doesn't have a RPG to live in or a story being written about her, so she is unstuck in time, appearing at any point in any of her arcs as it is convenient.

(The implication of all this is I need to play more games)

And EsperDerek, Midnight's author, I haven't seen in a million years and he last vanished more or less in the middle of a conversation so I dunno what's happening there.

If you start ranking Fluttershy as equally fast to RD and able to actually beat RD where it counts, at what makes her special, then you might as well say that RD could take better care of animals than Fluttershy, or outstare her when she's angry or something. Or that Twilight could design better dresses than Rarity, or Rarity being better at magic than Twilight. It diminishes RD and also kinda screws with what makes Fluttershy what she is.*

Fluttershy is slow, and that's ok. I loved Hurricane Fluttershy exactly because it didn't make her ridiculously fast after she got over her fear. She was still Fluttershy, not fast even at her best but still a valuable addition to the team. That's who Fluttershy is and she doesn't have to beat Dash or anypony else.

I agree with here you're going but I don't think being the fastest is really a definin characteristic of who Dashie is. Rather, it's a symptom. She's an athlete, who likes to win. Being fast is a nice perk, but he could be cumbersome and slow and still be Dashie, the athlete who likes to win.

It's weird to see someone at least somewhat like Gilda. *At least Trixie has redemption possibility, and has a chance for depth. *Gilda is unlikely to return, and the fans are probably part of the reason.

I think she is in theory as likely to return as Trixie. Well, she would have been. Except they've made griffons into a race. So I guess Gilda is dead and gone...

Gilda has redemption possibility though. What she went through is the sort of thin that shakes one's faith enough to prompt growth.


Trixies episode was a beginning. It suggests numerous potential arcs that could, would, might but probably won't follow on from it. This makes it easy to write fanfiction for her, but would also make it simple to re-introduce her.*

Gilda's episode was an ending. The story potential suggested by it revolves much more around how she could have, would have, might have been but probably wasn't before then, when Dash knew her originally. To include her in events after the episode, rather than via flashback, feels more difficult because you have to undo the situation as of the end of the episode, rather than being free to extrapolate from it. To some degree anyway.*
This is a part, I think, of why there is less fanfiction for Gilda, but also a much more pertinant reason as to why she's so unlikely to return, rather than the fan reaction as such.

That's not quite true though, the example in question being Rarity. She knows, at least, three different spells. Only one of which is directly related to her Cutie Mark, which is finding gemstones. The other two is the direct fusion of cloth together into a single coherent whole (not used often though) and she actually proved capable of producing illusions, music, and light in Suited for Success for her own fashion show...for the record and simplicity's sake, I'm lumping the illusions, music, and light together as a single spell cause...it very well could be. I doubt Rarity just 'knew' all three, I'm betting she learned how to do the second two because they'd be of immense help to her in both her chosen pursuit in life and future career choice. This would suggest that Starry is correct, to an extent. I'm Rarity could learn more spells of a particular variety, but I don't think she could...make a forcefield, teleport, or cast the Want-It-Need-It spell/dispel the Want-It-Need-It spell.

To put it in D&D terms, the vast majority of unicorns are Super-Specialists...they give up access to something like five or six of the eight schools of magic (not counting Universal) in exchange for super-proficiency in the two they still have access too (the ease in which Rarity finds gem, Shining Armor creating his Canterlot Shield, etc.). Twilight, on the other hand, is the generalist. She can perform all kinds of magic...but she's not quite as good at it as regular unicorns. Her shield could barely envelop the Mane Six when first used and only became able to encompass the library. She strained to find gems when looking for Rarity, etc. However...she can learn those spells in the first place and some spells aside from which. More importantly...not every unicorn studies magic. It's simply not a priority to them, once they figure out telekinesis and perhaps That One Spell that relates to their Cutie Mark, they go on to live relatively ordinary lives because they don't need to know a lot of magic. Twilight isn't unique in that regard, but she is unusual.

...I always figured that the magic schools are actually a hold-over from the Hearth's Warming Eve time period, where the ponies were seperated into their distinct tribes and the unicorns had to raise the sun and moon on their own. Each unicorn needed to be able to help with that and, since none of the tribes were co-operating, be able to help with other tasks to keep the unicorn kingdom running. With the appearance of Celestia and Luna to do those tasks, plus the unification of the tribes, unicorns haven't needed that level of magic on a day to day magic and so they don't study, train, and learn for it, they just learn what they 'need' to learn while some (like Twilight) go on further to become 'wizards'...but I really doubt that Twilight would compare to...well...Star-Swirl the Bearded in magic, except possibly in variety and new spells. A product of the different worlds they were born into.

I mostly agree, but I can't by the part that she's not as good as a specialist.

Pegasister is a name rooted in the more sexist side of feminism. It causes an unnecessary, artificial distinction when there is a neutral term already. It's a symptom of wanting to be special, which flies in the face of the ideals the fans are supposed to enjoy; harmony and unity.

Which is unfortunate, as pegasister is way cooler sounding than brony, and I enjoy that whenever someone uses 'man' in English they use 'mare' in equestrian English. I'd prefer the default to be a feminine adjective.

EsperDerek wrote a fast, fun, emotionally charged trilogy called Out In The Cold. To wind down, he wrote the fourth chapter of the trilogy, in which Trixie, Luna and Twilight have some afterdark time. The result is a baby unicorn named after Trixie's mother, Midnight.

When s/he joined the forum, EsperDerek took up Midnight as their avatar and did a good job muddling the issue of which was author and which was OC.

During part of the first season bets went around on what would and would not happen in an episode. I made a bet with Phoekun which I had planned on losing, to force myself to write a fanfic. I somehow won, and one of the two pitches was to write a story detailing vignettes of Midnight's life and childhood growing up, with specific scenes I'd like to see (and a certain four winged OC), which was written: Shades of Midnight.

In the first Summer of No Pony, Thanqol and DarthBobCat cornered the poor filly EsperDerek/Midnight, and... Demanded his secret cupcake recipe!

But they knew Midnight was holding out on them, because what kind of cupcakes are made without love? And as everypony knows, love accreted around the appendix. So using an Egg beater... Actually, why don't I show you?[/quote]

Since then, Midnight has been accepted as Princess and Heir-Designant to the Throne of Night or something else froofy like that. Hence why we sent her a message as well.

Last we checked Midnight was engaged to Jade Aurora, and pregnant. But it's been a while.

... Come to think of it I haven't heard back from their Graces Midnight or Luna... That should probably worry me.

Perhaps Luna's bat-eared guards are duskponies? I've always assumed they were just regular pegasi dressed up, but they seem like obvious duskponies, now that I come to think about it. And bats live in caves

She's awake. That entails a great many things, including certain perspectives on reality. This mirrors Thanqol's own perspectives and the whole concept of analyzing the entire universe as filtered through the World of Darkness is highly alluring.


The internet is a powerful tool for being what you're not. Best case, it lets you wear a mask and hope that thanqol starts being right.

I agree with here you're going but I don't think being the fastest is really a definin characteristic of who Dashie is. Rather, it's a symptom. She's an athlete, who likes to win. Being fast is a nice perk, but he could be cumbersome and slow and still be Dashie, the athlete who likes to win.

I actually think AJ would make an excellent writer. Writing requires lots of patience, thoughtfulness and is often hard work. I think Dash would approach writing much like Scootaloo did, rushing right at it only to find that coming up with words is, like, really hard, then giving up immediately.

I don't think it's a lack of imagination, having her level of empathy basically demands she have a good one.
i think she'd be too timid to write a conflict. and would ultimately be too insecure to put it out for public viewing.

i could see her writing good poetry, actually.

Maybe im just reading too much into it, but the what i see when fluttershy talks to other ponies is that she's thinking too much. she says something, then her brain snaps to the worst possible way it could be taken.

if RD could write coherently at all, her writing would be plagued with most of the problems of bad fanfiction (is it weird that i think of mlp fan fiction as separate from fanfiction of everything else?) and what occasionally vexes me about maxtronaut's writing.

I think it's important to note that ponies do not appear to have surnames at all. So far only the Cakes have shared a last name and really it's more of a theme then a name.

It is, perhaps, worth noting that, while it's Fluttershy who lives in my head, I get more dialogue-in-words from Applejack than from Fluttershy and all my other permanent residents combined.

Oh, there's the occasional word, or even paragraph, but mostly it's emotional resonances and connotations and (once I start writing stuff down) a feeling of "that's not what I'm saying".

"Nope" did make me smile, though I think there could have been a better picture.

But overall, these cards are poor. The rule text is badly written in places, some of the colour choices make no sense (Cheerilee, why are you red?), and there are some cards which just plain make no sense (Apple Bloom has reach, Pinkie has deathtouch etc.)

Right, I'll be honest here. I have no idea if I've gone too far or not. I think this is in part because I don't know your character well enough, in particular how strongly he is tied to Celestia. Perhaps this is also due to the different ways we believe the Princess would act. Are you actually angry that I had the Princess "betray" you, or is that soley in character? I honestly believe that Celestia would not condone the actions of someone who, for example, threatened someone with "hideous experiments".

To be honest, being disavowed by Celestia was probably one of the most devestating things that could have happened to Boffinspark. He had previously held Twilight Sparkle's position as Celestia's personal student, and held her in similar levels of awe. Consequently, Boffinspark handled having his royal protections declared forgeries and being declared a traitor…poorly.
As for Celestia's views on the professor, it essentially boiled down to the lesser of two evils; it was better to have Boffinspark ostensibly working for Equestria than to risk having him lend his abilities to Equestria's enemies. What would have happened, for example, if Nightmare Moon or worse, Discord, had contracted him to build them a device able to neutralize the effects of the Elements of Harmony? So, instead, Princess Celestia kept Boffinspark on a leash, both so he would be available should the Elements of Harmony fail, and to ensure he didn't actually turn on Equestria.

Compared to the Eldritch Abomination? Arguably, (though he only really wanders round trying to trick people into faustian pacts and forcing fanfiction authors to work harder. The Cult Leader? Sure. He's an irredeamable, unrepentant monster.
The Space-Lich, no, not even close. He's too often the voice of reason and the main source of Order in Ponythread. He is dangerously close to being Ponythread's legitimate protagonist.
Bleakbane is totally a secret anti-hero.

A Mad Scientist who, when faced with lawful censure (by the person he claimed he drew authority and funding from) immediately flees to a foreign nation, renounces all ties and whose rampages have destroyed vast swathes of Equestria several times over is no kind of Good Guy.

If you were one of the Good Guys, you'd have handed over the Keys of the OFC network to Celestia and turned yourself in to face the justice system, to either clear your name or serve your time. Not declare yourself an enemy of the state and replace your WMD's with even more dangerous ones.

What would have happened, for example, if Nightmare Moon or worse, Discord, had contracted him to build them a device able to neutralize the effects of the Elements of Harmony? So, instead, Princess Celestia kept Boffinspark on a leash, both so he would be available should the Elements of Harmony fail, and to ensure he didn't actually turn on Equestria.

To be entirely fair, a number of his points kind of hinge on some assumptions with very broad consequences. Celestia employing assassin-style guardponies (Though Wetwork would make an amusing black-ops-pony name, now I think of it) or encouraging research on weaponising Discord, funding dangerously insane ponies because otherwise they would join an even more unethical weapons market (even the existance of such a thing in equestria). It's almost to the point of needing Iron-Hoof Celestia to make sense of it. Perhaps, as with the Chargers, the only way to deal with it would be to declare alternate universe timey-wimey shenanigans, but that kind of thing is near impossible to keep track of let alone in the kind of amorphous non-specific setting of Ponythread.

For what it's worth, I always figure Ponythread-Prime as it were is more or less show-canon, with minimal iron-hoof, grimdark and so on. Which does leave the whimsical, joyful attempts at obliterating large parts of ponyville/canterlot every couple of threads a little more traumatic than they would otherwise be.

I don't really see how Orbital-Cannon-Mad-Science pony could be reconciled with an even remotely canon Celestia, to be honest, without losing the unethical mad science and OFC mass destruction. Which would be rather an unfair change to force on Boffinspark. The alternative would be to have Celestia become okay with all of the above, which is a major character derail from any kind of Celestia-Prime.
Though perhaps equally, if your going to engage in gleefully unethical mad-science, you really should be prepared to deal with the world reacting to it.

I would suggest simply playing along, seeing where it goes. If Boffinspark as a character needs a borderline Iron Hoof Celestia to be a complete character, then Alabenson should simply provide his own alternate universe one.
Otherwise, there is a choice. Either Boffinspark can no longer claim implicit support from Celestia, (losing the ability to pretend he isn't a dangerous maniac), or he can always mend his ways and reform.

Playing a good guy in a freeform environment is of dubious practicality. To be considered good, you have to do good things. To do things in a freeform, you need implicit consent from the controllers of the other characters to defeat or make permanent changes to those characters. Since the other characters are often author avatars, they are rarely allowed to be defeated or permanently altered. So 'being good' often translates to 'being ineffectual'. No wonder they're in short supply.

For what it's worth, Metal Mask has no powers whatsoever - she might even be bad at lying. Charger's power level is limited, but abstract. Jayden specifically doesn't try to protagonist ponythread because the cure would be worse than the disease.

Hmm. I wouldn't say Dashie would be bad at writing. She has interestingly nuanced depth to her. I think she could write well, at the young adult level. It's bloated from cannibalisticly feasting on its own sweetmeats to the point that it's unplayable, with rules exploits allowing a player with the moey and the rules-minutia knowledge to declare that he hasn't won until his life engine have given him one googolplex life points, or to allow you to win by playing a single card if you have more than 199 currently in your library. I fell into the latter camp. I first started playing recreationally around when it first came out. I got the cards by chance and never bought more because I couldn't afford them. And I frequently played against people who wouldn't clarify a rule until it was in their favor to do so, or who straight lied about things or were unsporting.

Point of order. Battle of Wits is really hard to win games with, having a 250 card deck will cause you to lose many games just to a bunch of aggresive creatures because that many cards increases variance a lot. I kinda feel like punching your opponents though (not literally). Magic is hard enough without stupid people being mean to new players. I suggest you try Duels of the Planeswalkers if you still like the game. The decks are fair and somewhat balanced (some are better than others, but not egregiously so) and you can learn all the rules in the peace and quiet of single-player vs. a computer.

But overall, these cards are poor. The rule text is badly written in places, some of the colour choices make no sense (Cheerilee, why are you red?), and there are some cards which just plain make no sense (Apple Bloom has reach, Pinkie has deathtouch etc.)

I disagree, and it's explained on the site. These cards are playable. Some weir things slipped in - such as Cheerilee being a red card because of her color scheme and happy troll face expression - but they are balance internally.

Remember, card bloat and power creep are the biggest blocks to getting people to play. Nopony wants to try and figure out a complex sliver deck when they are still tryin to figure out mana burn. 'Better' usually means stronger, more efficient for its mana cost. The creator specifically picked some things that might not be pony, but we're good for a balanced deck environment. When you start adding in new cards, new sets, things break down but they always have.

It's not perfect, but it meets an exceeds the basic benchmarks set.

Forgot to mention; there's a lot of inertia here.

For one, this started out not even as an RP, but excuses to show themed pictures. It eventually became an RP, but it wasn't initially. It was always presumably high-powered. And while I like playing low-power characters, a game of Exalted! Is not the game to play an then complain about not win weaker, y'know? It's a complex situation, but the gist for now is it was designed as a high-octane game. Can't really complain.

Second, the nature of the beast. I have two remaining low-power characters. One is sitting in a shoppe perfecting his brogue, one is helping her mamma with the animals. Neither cares about this situation, really. The third was killed post haste for being a low-powered and stepping into the wrong part of the RP.


That's just adorable.

And this is why.

A well-plate but still blatant "nope" card, because. It's the downside to a D&D board freeform game. It usually makes sense, but pretty quickly can slide into "I punch you and you fall down" instead of just "I punch you". The reason that's a problem in this game is me.



To be entirely fair, a number of his points kind of hinge on some assumptions with very broad consequences. Celestia employing assassin-style guardponies (Though Wetwork would make an amusing black-ops-pony name, now I think of it) or encouraging research on weaponising Discord, funding dangerously insane ponies because otherwise they would join an even more unethical weapons market (even the existance of such a thing in equestria). It's almost to the point of needing Iron-Hoof Celestia to make sense of it. Perhaps, as with the Chargers, the only way to deal with it would be to declare alternate universe timey-wimey shenanigans, but that kind of thing is near impossible to keep track of let alone in the kind of amorphous non-specific setting of Ponythread.

This is true but for one fact; every RP in the main thread, Ponythread-Prime as you say, is its Own, self-contained universe. Starry specifically subverts this due to a tweak of theoretical physics (metaphysics?) in her generation, but if someone else starts their own RP and I join in, I'm able to use Starry Notions at any point in his existence if I choose, and it wouldn't conflict with whatever had happened now.


For what it's worth, I always figure Ponythread-Prime as it were is more or less show-canon, with minimal iron-hoof, grimdark and so on. Which does leave the whimsical, joyful attempts at obliterating large parts of ponyville/canterlot every couple of threads a little more traumatic than they would otherwise be.

I don't really see how Orbital-Cannon-Mad-Science pony could be reconciled with an even remotely canon Celestia, to be honest, without losing the unethical mad science and OFC mass destruction.

I would like to note that this is directly mine and Pokonic's fault; the OFC doesn't actually do damage. We have prompted Boffenspark to greater heights of Brinksmanship but until this giant hole in the center of Canterlot, he's been shooting, literally, rainbows at us.


Which would be rather an unfair change to force on Boffinspark. The alternative would be to have Celestia become okay with all of the above, which is a major character derail from any kind of Celestia-Prime. *
Though perhaps equally, if your going to engage in gleefully unethical mad-science, you really should be prepared to deal with the world reacting to it.

I would suggest simply playing along, seeing where it goes. If Boffinspark as a character needs a borderline Iron Hoof Celestia to be a complete character, then Alabenson should simply provide his own alternate universe one.*
Otherwise, there is a choice. Either Boffinspark can no longer claim implicit support from Celestia, (losing the ability to pretend he isn't a dangerous maniac), or he can always mend his ways and reform.

Aye. This is again, directly my fault.
The nature of their back-and-forth lenses itself to god-modding. Which is normally okay, since it's just them, but nopony else has been able to get into the game; Siosilvar has been ignored, Maxtronaut overlooked, and it took me three attempts of increasing magnitude to join in before being bypassed, and only then because Starry is a collossal jerk who lied and pretended to have god-powers (seriously guys; did nopony think to call my bluff?) and did I mention jerk? Because I totally am.

The trouble is, I had to keep up the momentum. I have a running, invisible tally of what hit, what hurt, an what defenses have slipped. I'm lucky enough to have fifty threads and around 50 hours of IRC to fall back on, but I am dealing with a low-powered character burning through limited resources like a hobo trying to survive a blizzard.

But tell me honestly, if I said that I was nearing the end of my full power-bloat, or what my defenses were specifically, would you expect continuance, or would you expect the next post to be "I have just the zombie/space gizmo to instantly overcome that without effort"?

I'm bluffing.

Starry is, despite strange origins, a scared and upset little girl who played Let's Pretend and then was assaulted, lit on fire, insulted repeatedly and assaulted by zombies. She found a pile of weapons she doesn't understand and decided to use them, but is completely in over her head. My expected resolution? Somepony would say "hey, feel better" and give her a hug. Up until she became an evil general declaring martial law and twisting facts to start a three-way war. Now I expect this to end with her on the moon.

But the fact of the matter is, I forced myself into a private game. I played hardball to try and guide things towards more interactive RP, tried to pull in multiple people - includin all three princesses as RP'd throughout thread history, even of only two responded - and I pulled this into the lime light. I also set events in motion which I suspect hurt Alabenson's feelings, and that's not okay.

So while this is sort of a mess, I have to direct your blame here. Aside from giving you guys colored text to scroll past, there wasn't any issue until I forcibly interfered.



Playing a good guy in a freeform environment is of dubious practicality. To be considered good, you have to do good things. To do things in a freeform, you need implicit consent from the controllers of the other characters to defeat or make permanent changes to those characters. Since the other characters are often author avatars, they are rarely allowed to be defeated or permanently altered. So 'being good' often translates to 'being ineffectual'. No wonder they're in short supply.

My main character right now is Thistle. She's a hippo griff who has, thus far, kidnapped a living snowman to show him to her mamma. She sometimes hangs out with Jayden, but meh.

Starry Notions has masterful control over his magic, and absolutely no bandwidth to speak of. He is less super powered and more very clever and prone to over reaching. My clever plot to have his power removed broke down and now he's just having his soul eternally burnt away because Midnight and Topaz smiled at him and said "please".

Ess, insofar as he is a separate character is good at sneaking, obfuscation, ropes and their removal, an remembering debts.

Starry has no excuse and is a bad girl.

I think I'd explain the reason the professor has been getting away with as much as he has recently is because Princess Celestia has been too busy to keep as close an eye on him as normal, due to her sister returning and causing havoc, Discord returning and causing havoc and her niece getting married, with Chrysalis subsequently attacking and causing havoc. Given that Boffinspark is the sort who, given an inch, will attempt to use said inch to build an orbital weapons platform, it was only a matter of time before he went too far.

Magic: the gathering is a fun game. You get together with Friends and kill time in friendly engagements.

Magic: the gathering is a terrible game. It's bloated from cannibalisticly feasting on its own sweetmeats to the point that it's unplayable, with rules exploits allowing a player with the moey and the rules-minutia knowledge to declare that he hasn't won until his life engine have given him one googolplex life points, or to allow you to win by playing a single card if you have more than 199 currently in your library. And no, that last is not Unhinged or Unglued.

I fell into the latter camp. I first started playing recreationally around when it first came out. I got the cards by chance and never bought more because I couldn't afford them. And I frequently played against people who wouldn't clarify a rule until it was in their favor to do so, or who straight lied about things or were unsporting.
Jerks! I always clarify rules that are wrong. I just don't point out when you do something silly that costs you the game, and I do that if my opponent is new.

thubby was being his usual eldritch self when alabenson attacked him from the fire dimension.

Thubby can't do a lot of things to ponythreaders on the basis that he's an outsider. its an element common to extra-dimensional beings in fiction and it seemed a good way to check what is otherwise a reality-warper's power. (you'll notice he only engages personally by wielding nearby objects or harasses maxtronaut with gummies and other horrors)

because alabenson is an outsider in the fire dimension (in dnd he would be subject to spells like banishing), and because i wanted to have some high octane destruction happen, thubby attacked him. they fought, thubby dragged him into his lair where he'd have an advantage.

octy (one of alabenson's minions, it sings pinkie pie songs), saved him. Thubby persued, but wound up in a place where he once again couldnt attack them. so octy counter attacked, forcing thubby's retreat, and that's where it ends for now.

oh, and Thubby broke silent night's face at some point and is pursuing recruiting the walking corpse.

the other thing going on is that meece's OC got "injured" by a cute bomb. Thubby offered to help. when he got attacked, he trapped (starry is it?) under a rock (and left to do the above). rather than help him, the rest of ponythread piled on, adding trucks apparently filled with trucks (fractal trucks).
someone stole the fractal trucks, someone else "saved" meece's OC by dumping him in the everfree, and holy crap this is a lot to explain.

I'd try to refute this, if it weren't for the fact that I sell antimatter rainnukes to the highest bidder, with little to no importance given to the after-effects. Let's see, this is what I've gathered.
Alabenson, our resident evil scientist, has finally lost all pretense of being good and any claim at legitimacy as Celestia has come to her senses. He has since retreated to be with his lovely wife, the fire-princess.

Thubby has been busy propagating Pink One Propaganda... wherever he is.
And he now has to deal with a dumb bomb in his hemisphere.

I have no idea what's happened with Pokonic. Apparently he died, but survived by taking refuge in his relative somehow.

As for me, I've been busy under one of the mountains near Canterlot, mass producing Rainnukes and Dumb Bombs. Some of my more recent inventions include a hand-held Friendship Cannon. It only has 45% of the OFC's power, but the beam is much more concentrated, fit for utterly destroying any undesirable (plus whatever things may be up to three miles behind him.)

To be fair, there are so many rules, that it makes sense to kind of play to learn. I agree on the bloatedness of the game nowadays. Mythic rares and the bloat of powerful cards gives people with money way too much advantage. I like the game as it is now, so I'm not gonna say I miss the old days (which to me was Ravnica, and lo and behold, it's coming back next block). But, there's a certain feeling you get when you realize all your favorite cards are pretty much useless, because a 8/8 trampler for 8 mana doesn't mean anything when you can get the same for six mana that can't be countered (I always tend to use Terra Stomper in my examples for some reason). Or, you know, a creature that requires you sacrifice three permanents when it attacks (annihilation...yeah, that's fair and balanced...). So yeah. Too bad my new roommate doesn't play though, I miss it.

On an unrelated note, I had a "casting call" at Blockbuster today. It's wasn't so much an interview, as it was a group of people getting together and talking with local managers. We played "name that movie", and we learned that if your forte is TV shows and video games (you know, me), then you're SOL because they only care about movies. The interview was 10 miles away from where I am, because they were all held in the same place, so my roommate had to take time off work to take me and pick me up. His girlfriend COULD HAVE done it, because she was off, but she's so massively xenophobic, that she doesn't even want me in her car. But that's another story that paints me as someone who wants humanity to die (yeah, she'll do that to you). All in all, a pointless day, because the next step is they call whoever they want for a private interview. You know, what MOST companies do. But whatever. Turns out the store they're hiring for in this city is a little far away anyway. Why do buses never run late enough for real people? 8 p.m.? Really?

Also, I learned that I can load two different X-Chat's at once, so I might pop into IRC sometime.

See, this is where I wish I had more time to spend in Ponythread other than just lurk constantly play catch-up. I'd totally love to RP Othoof Trottvassen - he's a good guy, and a Hero* (capitalisation intentional) as well! And completely lacking in super powers (well, other than those from being a Spark and a Hero, as defined in the Girl Mare Genius universe).

The duel decks series are very well-balanced and have something fun to do with at least one really cool card, and almost all intro pack decks are balanced against each other. It's basically $20 to get yourself a set that you can use to train someone new and have several pretty good games with them while teaching them the rules.

That's true, right up until you realize that the annoyance you would experience constructing an identical deck by buying all the cards yourself exceeds the price difference and you're too lazy to get around to that anyway. Oh, no. I called Starry a mare. In account of she is female. And was trappe under a burning table while people shot lasers and ethnic slurs at her. And there was a rock at some point... It was all rather unpleasant.


To be fair, there are so many rules, that it makes sense to kind of play to learn. I agree on the bloatedness of the game nowadays. Mythic rares and the bloat of powerful cards gives people with money way too much advantage. I like the game as it is now, so I'm not gonna say I miss the old days (which to me was Ravnica, and lo and behold, it's coming back next block). But, there's a certain feeling you get when you realize all your favorite cards are pretty much useless, because a 8/8 trampler for 8 mana doesn't mean anything when you can get the same for six mana that can't be countered (I always tend to use Terra Stomper in my examples for some reason). Or, you know, a creature that requires you sacrifice three permanents when it attacks (annihilation...yeah, that's fair and balanced...). So yeah. Too bad my new roommate doesn't play though, I miss it.

Magic was never a thing that I really cared about enough to enjoy on its own. It's is a vehicle to enjoying time with friends. Whenever it instead gets in the way I abandon it.

Addin ponies keeps me interested enough to care.


On an unrelated note, I had a "casting call" at Blockbuster today. It's wasn't so much an interview, as it was a group of people getting together and talking with local managers. We played "name that movie", and we learned that if your forte is TV shows and video games (you know, me), then you're SOL because they only care about movies. The interview was 10 miles away from where I am, because they were all held in the same place, so my roommate had to take time off work to take me and pick me up. His girlfriend COULD HAVE done it, because she was off, but she's so massively xenophobic, that she doesn't even want me in her car. But that's another story that paints me as someone who wants humanity to die (yeah, she'll do that to you). All in all, a pointless day, because the next step is they call whoever they want for a private interview. You know, what MOST companies do. But whatever. Turns out the store they're hiring for in this city is a little far away anyway. Why do buses never run late enough for real people? 8 p.m.? Really?

Also, I learned that I can load two different X-Chat's at once, so I might pop into IRC sometime.

The duel decks are awesome. But, even with planeswalkers in the new ones, the Goblins vs. Elves duel deck will always be the most awesome.

Using the above example, not really. The uncommons in the elf deck were enough to pay for it (at least as they are priced now). That's why they only put one of each in there. The deck layout doesn't make sense until you think of it that way (plus, they make precons underpowered anyway, because they don't want to sell you outright an awesome deck).

Aye. Doesn't always go bad but when it does, it causes a rage that burns like a peat fire, raging under grous for years until it finally consumes all in a violent conflagration caused less by any actual fault at the point of impact and more from exposing my latent ferocity to oxygen.

How are they unbalanced?

Haven't looked at the whole set yet, but the following seem to be persistent problems.
1. Multicolored creatures and bad multi-colored lands that all come into play tapped. Multicolored lands also don't especially match with multicolor creatuers and lands all have a bunch of wonky effects that take colored mana. This will lead to slow games where you can't cast your spells or where you're constantly in tension between using the abilities you have and casting other stuff. Not particularly fun.
2. The set tries to have an enchantment theme for cutie marks, an artifact theme, a colored stuff matters theme, landfall, I'm not even sure what the deathtouch regenerators are there for, and I've only read half the cards. It's totally manic.
3. Creature numbers are weird. Bunch of bad 1 mana guys, several unplayble defenders and nothing that really attacks through them. Board is likely to stall out heavily.
4. Reprints are easily the best cards. If it looks clean, elegant, and works well, odds are that the set designers lifted it from real Magic and changed the name and art.
5. The planeswalkers are aggresively costed, but nothing else is. Celestia and Chrysalis are heavily OP and will dominate any game in which they're played. Yay for blue and white being better than every other color, just like real Magic. /sarcasm
6. The cool big creatures are overcosted and underwhelming. Also color heavy. Don't expect to actually play any of those fun-looking cards. We don't play fun cards in magic, we play aggresively costed 2/1s that kill people that want to play fun cards.
7. The cards don't feel right flavorfully. Why is Diamond Tiara white? Why is Derpy black? Cheerilee red? Pegasi are blue-white apparently, which is wonky because those are unicorn colors. Everfree forest is black/green, but it's cards are primarily blue/green. Don't get it.
8. Several cards that will do literally nothing a high percentage of the time. Sacrifice an artifact for mana? Cool, except that I don't have any artifacts and if I do half of them produce mana already, so why would I want to sac them? An artifact that comes into play tapped, makes one mana and then goes to my opponent? That's great, yeah, that's totally worth a card /sarcasm (ironically, that card would be great if it just came into play untapped). Tap to make a permanent another color until untapped...oooookay, thanks Discord statue.

Magic: the gathering is a fun game. You get together with Friends and kill time in friendly engagements.

Magic: the gathering is a terrible game. It's bloated from cannibalisticly feasting on its own sweetmeats to the point that it's unplayable, with rules exploits allowing a player with the moey and the rules-minutia knowledge to declare that he hasn't won until his life engine have given him one googolplex life points, or to allow you to win by playing a single card if you have more than 199 currently in your library. And no, that last is not Unhinged or Unglued.

I fell into the latter camp. I first started playing recreationally around when it first came out. I got the cards by chance and never bought more because I couldn't afford them. And I frequently played against people who wouldn't clarify a rule until it was in their favor to do so, or who straight lied about things or were unsporting.
For me, it was the money. I had a bunch of cards and had fun making decks, but my natural curiosity and desire for more/new/better cards kept me buying packs of cards. The collectability of the game was just too much, and it wasn't going away until I finally just got rid of all my cards.

I do not forsee my wallet appreciating the release of the upcoming FiM trading cards. :smalltongue:

Alright. That sounds pretty interesting, as a purposefully loose game sounds more fun to me than te tournament level stuff they had going on. I remember when the card database was used to determine which four archetypes were the only useful ones. I remember eight separate magazines listing that a new set release changed the tournament scene by making one of the deck archetypes less powerful and another rose to being predominant because it could now easily beat those three. And then I didn't see anything else for months. It's a silly complaint, but it's still there this though;

See, I understand this sentiment and it's obviously where the designers were, but
a) I don't think they're right on some of these and
b) they went out of color-pie, which often leads to really unfun magic.

Just to use the two that you said made sense, no they don't. Black isn't the color of mistakes and thoughtless action or even of bad things happening randomly. That's mostly red, sometimes green if it's nature-related. Cheerilee is a teacher, an academic that likes educating young fillies. She's never expressed anger or strong emotion at all, and even took the love potion in relative stride. She should be blue.

More importantly, and this has nothing to do with the tournament scene, they structured the set in unfun ways. There are a lot of 1/2s. These will clog up the ground and then do nothing. There are a bunch of enchantments and artifacts that do limited stuff like giving or taking away flying or altering colors. The big stuff costs a lot of colored mana and can't all be played effectively in the same deck.

Basically, I'm pretty sure I could make a pegasus flyer deck, or a green/white attacking deck with just a few of the better creatures and a good curve and beat pretty much everything else fairly consistently. That's boring and it will make people feel bad.

Since my insomnia involves unwanted images and sounds buzzing in my head, I picture an infinite featureless grey-white plane filled with all the clutter going through my mind. It's not like I can stop it intruding in my thoughts, but at least I can control the context it appears in. I then visualise the items dissolving into glowy blue dust and blowing away, leaving nothing but me and the perfect stasis of the plane. And then the clutter pops back out of nowhere, I fight it off again and so on for a while. Eventually it just stops popping back and I can get some sleep.

What's an emotion that each of the Mane 6 don't experience all that often, and what are some interesting situations that would cause them to feel that emotion, and subsequently deal with it?

What's an emotion that each of the Mane 6 don't experience all that often, and what are some interesting situations that would cause them to feel that emotion, and subsequently deal with it?

Hmm, interesting question. I'm not sure how broadly emotion is defined, so I'm just going to pick stuff.

Twilight:Abandon
Rainbow Dash: Pathos
Applejack: Anger
Rarity: Excitement
Pinkie Pie: Serenity
Fluttershy: Passion

For Twilight, when I say abandon, I mean the ability to just let herself ago and forget who is watching her or how she will be judged on things. We saw it for a moment in Cute Mark Chronicles when she was doing the yes yes yes jumping, but I think that's something that's very hard for her because she's always thinking about what other ponies are thinking about. I think a situation that really pushed her abilities, similar to the end of Boast Busters, with the addition of requiring more than just magic to succeed would be something that could cause her to forget who was watching.

Rainbow Dash has trouble feeling empathy and I think pathos is what she's worst at because it requires her to feel bad for sompony else, which also means realizing that others can't always pull themselves out of their troubles. I think she'd need to have something happen to her that put her in a depression for a while. Not like the broken wing, or even losing Gilda, some more long-term setback like losing her weather job or doing something really insensitive and having to spend a long time earning back the trust of one of her friends.

For Applejack, she gets annoyed but seems too stubborn, consistent, and down to earth to get really upset. I think she might suffer from mother bear type syndrome though, so someone who threatened Apple Bloom or Big Mac could cause her to get extremely angry in the right circumstances.

Rarity I think gets anxious about everything, but very rarely really relishes what she's doing. I think she would need to find a different temporary hobby to really get excited. A dress show would just make her nervous, but if she got into, say, the pony version of soccer or some such, I could see her just getting really excited in the moment.

For Pinkie, I also think that some kind of hobby would help her change her mindset. She still hasn't really learned a lesson about entertaining herself, and it would help her mature to learn that something calming and focused is also within her abilities. Given her zaniness, perhaps Zen sand gardens?

Fluttershy I think has trouble with emotions. Even when she gets excited about animals, she still tries to stay meek, and then when she loses it she completely loses it. For her, an affair of the heart of some sort really would open her world up quite a bit, even if she got hurt in the end.

Twilight: I'm not sure actually, we see her cover lots of emotions. I'll say Nostalgia. What would cause it? Likely going home and having a long talk with Celestia.

Pinkie Pie: Hate: Another hard one. Somepony would have to cross the line extremely to get this response.

Fluttershy: Bitterness: I think this would have happened if she had stuck with her modelling career.

Applejack: Despair: I don't know what would cause her to actually give up. Even a personal loss doesn't seem like it would cause this. I'm going to say unjust banishment.

Rainbow Dash: Jealousy or Envy: I'm not sure which one this applies to. Anyways somepony getting in the Wonderbolts through familial or political bonds would cause this.

Rarity: Acceptance: She seems to struggle the most with her desires and emotions. What would cause this? I haven't a clue. I'm not sure this counts as an emotion though.

I disagree with a couple of your choices:

Fluttershy is very passionate. Listen to her talk about her dreams for the Grand Galloping Gala or even about how she wants her dress. Or about Spike in episode 1. Or defending Rainbow Dash in Sonic Rainboom. Or her cheering in the same episode.

Rarity gets pretty excited too. We see her hopping up and down on Spike's tail for example. Or her initial enthusiasm for making her friend's dresses. Mostly though she does either keep it under control or over exaggerates it.

Pinkie Pie I can see as weirdly serene as it is. It's just that her being calm and composed is bubbly and jumping. Well that all comes down to opinion though. IMO she loses her composure when dealing with Cranky and in Party of One.
