This is how a battle with a Greybeard usually ends

"Bow before my voice and fist"
- Arne Tavaan, human Greybeard

Greybeards. While the name evokes the image of an old bearded man, the Greybeards are an order of martial artists of all species, sex, and ages devoted to both honing their bodies through battle and their minds through learning the bit of ancient lore known as Dragon Shouts. While not being as entirely successful with Dragon Shouts as Dovahkiin, they have martial skills that can topple a foe easily without weapons and a voice that can invoke the power of ancient dragons.

Adventures: While most Greybeards do not even leave the monastery they were trained in, some leave to discover new Dragon Shouts, convinced that all of the currently known ones are not the only ones out there, or to hone their battle skills further, as there is a limit to how much one can grow when their pool of creatures to battle with rarely changes, as can be the case for a Greybeard monastery.

Characteristics: While primarily known for their martial skills and preferring to fight unarmed, Dragon Shouts are also an important aspect of the Greybeards, as they and the Dovahkiin are essentially the only beings known to be able to use them.

Alignment: Given the monastic lifestyle, most Greybeards lean towards lawful on the law/chaos axis, although adventuring Greybeards can lean towards being neutral and some even chaotic after not living in the strict discipline the monastery lifestyle imposes. Greybeards also tend to be good, although some ex-students can end up being neutral and a rare few are evil.

Religion: Greybeards tend to worship Lawful deities, with a deity known as Kyne being worshipped by many traditional Greybeards and a few that are not, and deities of knowledge are also favored amongst Greybeards. A few Greybeards worship dragons and Dovahkiin, seeing them as gods due to being the source of the great power known as Dragon Shouts.

Background: Greybeards are often trained from the time they are children. These children are sometimes selected from orphanages, although many come from the communities that tend to spring up around Greybeard monasteries, both as thanks for supporting them(as the communities tend to be their primary source of supplies) and because they require slightly less training due to most seeing the Greybeards training from outside the walls of their monasteries. They then undergo training in unarmed combat and Shout pronunciation, eventually learning to master and sometimes fuse the two.

Races: Humans and dragonblooded races tend to make up the majority of Greybeards. However, some of the other humanoid races interested in Shout research, such as elves and gnomes, or are interested in the discipline of the lifestyle, like dwarves, have a few monasteries of their own out there. Rumours have it that there are monasteries with even more races within, but they are unsubstantiated, as most Greybeards do not even know of the location of even one other monastery.

Other Classes: Greybeards tend to get along with Dovahkiin, and with classes that admire delving into knowledge, such as wizards. Greybeards of a religious bent tend to get along well with clerics and paladins, and paladins and monks can both respect the disciplined lifestyle Greybeards tend to lead.

Role: Greybeards are primarily front-line fighters, although these abilities can be supplemented by Dragon Shouts and a few other abilities they have. Charisma-focused Greybeards can be useful as a party face.

Adaptation: Greybeards can be seen as dragon-worshipping monks(which they almost essentially almost anyways). Also, if one wants to enhance the religious aspect(worshippers of Kyne), dragon shouts can be reflavored as holy words. Should one want to go with a more eastern monk flavor, dragon shouts can be seen as being the effects of different martial styles.

GAME RULE INFORMATION
Greybeards have the following game statistics.

Class Features
All of the following are class features of the Greybeard.

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: The Greybeard is proficient with all simple weapons, two martial weapons, and light armor.

Chosen Ability Score: Different monasteries train differently, leading to multiple styles of gaining Dragon Shouts. Some choose to research Dragon Shouts, while others try to commune with the dragon souls of old, while still others attempt to gain the power of Dragon Shouts by molding their very personality to become more like those of the dragons of ancient times. Choose one mental ability score(Charisma, Intelligence, Wisdom). Your class abilities that key off of your chosen ability score use this ability score. Also, you gain a +1 bonus to all ability and skill checks using this ability score. Lastly, if the ability score you chose was not Charisma, you may substitute that ability score for Charisma when using Dragon Shouts.

Dragontouched:At 1st level, the Greybeard gains the Dragontouched (http://dndtools.eu/feats/dragon-magic--62/dragontouched--747/)as a bonus feat.

Monastic Training: Through years of hard work, the very hands of a Greybeard carry the potential to defeat foes easily, and as they grow more experienced, can even easily slay mighty beasts with nothing but their open palm. Greybeards may deal lethal damage with their unarmed strikes and take no penalty to attack rolls when attempting to deal non-lethal damage with their unarmed strikes, and take no penalty to off-hand attack rolls when wielding two weapons, so long as the off-hand weapon is an unarmed strike. A Medium-sized Greybeard's unarmed strikes deal 1d4 damage at 1st level, then increase one size every three levels after, as shown on the table above. The critical range of a Greybeard's unarmed strikes increases by 1 at 4th level and every 6 levels after. Also, at 7th level and every six levels after, the critical multiplier of the Greybeard's unarmed strike increases by 1. Lastly, a Greybeard does not need to take a full-round action to make a standard two-weapon attack(a normal attack with a primary-hand weapon then an attack with an off-hand weapon) if one or both weapons are either an unarmed strike or a light weapon, although this may not be done while wielding one weapon in two hands.

Unarmored Protection: When wearing no armor, the Greybeard is granted a bonus to their AC equal to their chosen ability score modifier. At 5th level and every four levels after that, they gain an additional +1 bonus to AC when wearing no armor.

Two-Fist Style: When making more than one attack with at least one of those attacks being the Greybeard's unarmed strike, you may add +1d8 damage to the total amount of damage dealt by the attack for every two attacks that succeed. This bonus damage increases by 1d8 every two levels after.

Dragon Shouts(Su): Dragon Shouts are three-word phrases gleaned from Ancient Draconic, resonating with the power of ancient dragons. At first, a Greybeard can only manage the most basic words of the phrases, then manage to work out more advanced words as they advance in power, eventually completing their phrase. The Greybeard gains access to one Dragon Shout at 2nd level, then another every four levels after. The Greybeard starts out with access to the Vowel ability of each shout it knows, then progresses their shouts as stated on the table above. They gain access to a minor ability or benefit upon gaining access to a shout, called a Vowel due to the mere knowledge of the smallest part of such words altering their being. You may use Shouts once per encounter unless otherwise stated. The Greybeard gains access to a number of bonus Shouts equal to 1/2 their chosen ability score modifier. All spells and abilities that mimic them treat the caster level as being equal to the Greybeard's class level.

Shouts may be selected from the list provided here. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=250268)

Breakneck Blows: At 3rd level, the Greybeard learns how to make more attacks than time would seem to allow for. When making a full attack, for every two attacks that the Greybeard would otherwise do, the Greybeard gains an additional attack with their unarmed strike at their highest attack bonus with a -2 penalty, provided they are able to do so(ex. a Greybeard wielding a rapier and a dagger would not gain the benefits of this ability).

Greybeard's Gift: The Greybeard is known for more than their unarmed fighting style and Dragon Shouts. Greybeards also develop a few other talents besides. At 3rd level and every two levels after, the Greybeard may select an ability from the list below. If an ability would be selectable more than once, they may not select that ability twice in a row.

Bane Strike: Some Greybeards concentrate their battle knowledge against certain types of foes. Choose one type of enemy from the Ranger's Favored Enemies (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/ranger.htm#favoredEnemy) list. You gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls against that type of creature and deal an additional 1d8 with your Two-Fist style class feature. You may also select a specific species within the type of creature chosen. You gain an additional +1 bonus to attack rolls and additional +1d8 damage with Two-Fist Style when dealing with that specific type of creature. You may select this ability again to select a new type of creature and species, or to increase the benefits against an existing creature types with another +1 to attack rolls and +1d8 to Two-Fist Style damage. Selecting an existing creature type again does not increase the species-specific bonus, although the Greybeard may select another species within the type to gain the species-specific bonus against.(ex. A Greybeard selects Dragon as the type chosen, and Red Dragon as the species chosen. The Greybeard gains a +1 bonus to attack rolls and +1d8 Two-Fist Style damage when attacking dragons, and a +2 to attack rolls and +2d8 Two-Fist Style damage when attacking Red Dragons. Selecting this ability again increases the bonus to +2 to attack and +2d8 Two-Fist Style damage when attacking Dragons, and +3 to attack and +3d8 Two-Fist Style damage when attacking Red Dragons).

Fist Technique: You gain the use of one maneuver from any one discipline you choose. All Greybeard levels count as initiator levels, and you may treat your unarmed strike as a discipline weapon for that maneuver's discipline even if it is not on that discipline's weapon list. You may select this ability again in order to select another maneuver, must have selected a maneuver of another type within a discipline before selecting a stance of that discipline, and may not have maneuvers from more disciplines than are equal to 1/2 your chosen ability score modifier(minimum 1).

Prime Speaker: Many Greybeards along their path to learning Dragon Shouts come across Truespeak, similar in that Truespeak originates from around the same time as Primal Draconic, from which Dragon Shouts obtain their power. The Greybeard chooses one recitation, utterance, or incantation equal to or less than 1/3 their class level. They may use that ability so long as they make the DC to use it, and all Greybeard class levels count as truenaming class levels. Also, their absolute limit per level is equal to 1 + their chosen ability score modifier instead of 1 + Charisma modifier. Lastly, the Greybeard gains Truespeak as a class skill. This ability may be selected again to gain another recitation, utterance, or incantation. Each version of this ability is counted as separate(ex. a Greybeard could select this ability to gain a recitation and then an utterance, but not an utterance and then an utterance). This uses this Truenaming system (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=90961).

Shout Strike: Select a number of shouts you know equal to 1/2 your chosen ability modifier. When attacking with their unarmed strike, should the Dragon Shout have an ability that requires a standard action or less to activate and either deals damage or could otherwise directly affects the target of the attack, they may use that ability as an off-hand weapon. If you do not yet know enough shouts to equal your chosen ability score modifier, you may add shouts when they become available until you do.

Shout Style: When using the Shout Strike ability, you may benefit from Two-Fist Style. Also, the number of shouts you may use with Shout Strike increases to equal your chosen ability score modifier. You must have Shout Strike to select this, and may not select it immediately after you gain Shout Strike.

Soul Shouter: At 20th level, a Greybeard stands as a master of Thu'um, being able to Shout like few other beings in existence. You gain the Outsider type and all of its benefits, with the energy of Shouts becoming infused with you. You increase your chosen ability score by 4, and all others by 2. Additionally, for a number of rounds per day equal to 1/2 your class level, you may enter the stance of the Greybeard, a stance where the Greybeard embraces the power of Thu'um, and forgets all other words he knows, causing others to buckle under the power of Dragon Shouts. When under the effects of this stance, you may use encounter abilities of Dragon Shouts without expending uses of that ability. Additionally, whenever you use a Shout, you may choose either to deal 4d6 damage or 1d4 points of ability score damage to your chosen ability score to all enemies within hearing range, with deaf creatures being treated as having a hearing range equal to half of their normal hearing range, as even the impact of a shout can be felt, if not heard, when the Greybeard is like this. Damage dealt this way may not begin to heal until the target has had 8 hours of rest, or 8 hours of little activity if the target does not rest. These rounds need not be consecutive, but must be spent in 2-round intervals.

Notes: Alright, so when making this class, I've decided to err on the side of it being too powerful than not powerful enough(or at least so I think), then make adjustments from there. Not really that many options for Greybeard's Gift yet, although I hope to change that, and please feel free to suggest any you think may be relevant.

Please feel free to PEACH and comment.

The fluff looks good :) A good caption of the greybeard's in skyrim. The only major concern that I have at this point is that they have good BAB progression. I don't think that they should be as strong as the dohvakiin maybe 3/4 BAB? If they are based on the monk maybe 3/4 BAB is adequate, after all they are old men more reckoned for their shouts than for their physical capabilities.

Unarmored protection + chosen ability score can make them very dippable for casters, specially if they keep their high bab.

Two-Fist Style: When making more than one attack with at least one of those attacks being the Greybeard's unarmed strike, you may add +1d8 damage to the total amount of damage dealt by the attack for every two attacks that succeed. This bonus damage increases by 1d8 every two levels after.

So for example a 6th level greybeard that connects with both his unarmed strikes deals 1d6+1d6+1d8? Can a greybeard make two attacks before level 6? I suppose he can if he takes two weapon fighting, correct?

They gain the bonus shouts when they get access to the shouts. What does happen if their chosen ability increases? Due to items, levels, spells, etc. Also Comparing the grey beard to the dovahkiin the dovahkiin learns more shouts (unless they greybeard has a high associated ability score), when he doesn't seem completely dedicated to the study of shouts. Maybe up a little the shouts of the grey beard.

This and two fist style make me feel pressured to take two weapon fighting as my first level feat (and it is normally considered subpar) maybe giving it as a bonus feat. Needing two weapon fighting also makes the character more MAD since a high str is needed (this is mostly a melee character), high con (after all he is going to be unarmored), high dex (for two weapon fighting), one high mental stat (for shouts and AC)

Normally the favored enemy doesn't stack, you just apply the bigger of the bonuses.

Do you need to meet the prerequisites for that maneuver?

Cool

Shout Strike: Select a number of shouts you know equal to 1/2 your chosen ability modifier. When attacking with their unarmed strike, should the Dragon Shout have an ability that requires a standard action or less to activate and either deals damage or could otherwise directly affects the target of the attack, they may use that ability as an off-hand weapon. If you do not yet know enough shouts to equal your chosen ability score modifier, you may add shouts when they become available until you do.

Again, what happens if your ability score modifier increases?

It is certainly a strong class that's why my comment were oriented to one it slightly down I really like it though.

Well I am new to this and I haven't peached before but if I were to post a class I would appreciate the peaching so here we go.

Hmm....well, perhaps they shouldn't have as good a progression as the Dovahkiin, but as this is designed to be taken by boys and girls of all ages, I'd like them to be good at unarmed combat. Maybe full BAB when unarmed or an attack bonus, if full BAB as-is won't do?

Unarmored protection + chosen ability score can make them very dippable for casters, specially if they keep their high bab.

Granted, it's the same with the Monk, although the unarmed progression is slightly weaker, albeit that Monk is best for Clerics and Druids only.

So for example a 6th level greybeard that connects with both his unarmed strikes deals 1d6+1d6+1d8? Can a greybeard make two attacks before level 6? I suppose he can if he takes two weapon fighting, correct?

Correct. He deals that damage when connecting with both unarmed strikes. And yes, the Greybeard can make two attacks at no penalty(provided the off-hand weapon is the Greybeard's unarmed strike), as is written in Monastic Training.

The standard procedure for ability increases(at least in the campaigns I've run/been in) is that temporary increases to ability scores do up uses, DCs and other stuff, but never the number known of anything like that. Assume that applies here. Also, the reason why I gave the Greybeard less Shouts is because the average Greybeard in the game has less shouts than the Dovahkiin. In-game, the Dovahkiin has 20 shouts, while the Greybeard has 8. Since the Greybeards in the game would be the pinnacle of their kind(would need a chosen score of 22 for 8), it makes sense(for this class) to have less, even accounting for other factors.

You don't need to have Two-Weapon Fighting. Please read Monastic training.

Normally the favored enemy doesn't stack, you just apply the bigger of the bonuses.

While based on Favored Enemy and selects enemies from the list, it is not favored enemy.

Do you need to meet the prerequisites for that maneuver?

Yes. In order to select any maneuver in any case, you must meet the prerequisites for it, hence why I did not specify.

Again, what happens if your ability score modifier increases?

See above.

It is certainly a strong class that's why my comment were oriented to one it slightly down I really like it though.

Thanks. Perhaps it could use that BAB adjustment, although I should still like a higher BAB with unarmed strikes.
