What's up with the 10 character minimum on posts?

It's to prevent spammy short posts that simply say "Yes.", "This.", "+1", and the like.

Additionally, there might be a limit to how low they can go with the current board software. I know the maximum post size is approximately the maximum post size for this version of Vbulletin. The maximum thread length, 50 posts, isn't coded at all, but when we break that rule it makes Rawhide cry. I think it was when they cut off the second Dominic Deegan thread (at something like a thousand pages) that it was explained, but I could be totally wrong.

{Scrub the post, scrub the quote}

...as demonstrated here, it's easy enough to work around, but it remains discouraged because such posts don't add anything of import to a thread (or something along those lines; I don't have the exact phrasing memorized).

That one, IIRC, is because the database does funky things when it has to deal with very long threads. Also, it only went to 301 pages (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53160&page=301). :smalltongue:

Of course, there ARE times when it's possible to leave a one-word answer and still contribute to the thread. For example, when somebody asks a question, and a simple yes/no is all that's really needed.

In these instances it is far better to say something like "Yes, that's correct." You would be amazed how ambiguous a simple "Yes." can be. Even in that instance a direct quote would be required.

Hmm... I've never had a problem with the ten character minimum.
It merely annoys me in certain Silly Message Board Games through which the objective is a one or two word post.

My suggestion is looking up a list of nine letter words to use to then follow with a full stop. Unless it's ten letters...
I shall have to check some time in the near future.

Nope, it's just 10 characters that's needed.

And this is what I get for waiting too long to report my findings obtained from the word association thread.
Oh well... You know what they say, first to publish gets the credit.

Sheriff: Technical limitation aside, do keep in mind the Forum Rules prohibition on Minor Spam applies to posts that are both over and under the ten character limit. Saying "Absolutely" or using hidden characters doesn't evade the rules, even it if circumvents the technical limitation.

So, uh, it seems that admins/mods are above the rules that they want us to obey.

How interesting. :smallamused:
