Anyone know what a dragon army is comprised of?

I am running a war of the lance campaign and have only a few printed resources and most of the pdf's needed... but in all of them I can not find a detailed description of what a Dragon Army is made of.

How many draconians, Orcs, Goblins, Hob-goblins and humans... and more importantly WHERE each of the five dragon armies are at in the war.

As such I have had to make up much of the details needed. I am using the green dragon army as they seem to be the one army that gets little or no play in any of the books. And as for my dragon high lord... I just cloned Verminaard. :smalltongue:

Any pointers or suggestions would be appreciated!

Any sourcebook will have intentionally glossed over the troop numbers and disposition deliberately. You'll probably have to build your own.

I'd strongly suggest giving Heroes of Battle a look. It's got some great stuff for doing a campaign as part of a military conflict.

Well, I can tell you that there are exactly ZERO orcs. Otherwise it's vague on purpose so the DM can build his own army. I think, as a rough example, the Blue Dragon Army at the High Clerist's Tower had ~10,000 infantry with 3 dragons or something comparable. And it was the main force in that area. I don't remember many accounts of mounted goblin or draconian units from those books, but I've seen them in later books riding wolves and other beasts. If I remember correctly, I believe the Minotaurs initially opposed the Dragon Armies but were beaten back.

The main theme is that Draconians make for tough airborne shock troops. And, well, for most of the war, the Dragon Armies were the only side with dragons. This, combined with the fact that no other global force stood to oppose them meant that they had little trouble conquering Ansalon. And then there's the bit with the flying fortresses...

But other than those advantages, the Dragon Armies were composed of poorly disciplined human mercenaries, wild hill tribes, and goblins. The Dragon Highlords would have been just another errant group of warlords led by Ariakas and his cultists without the help of the Dark Queen.

If you want some fluff on how the Dragon Armies were formed before the creation of Draconians and the awakening of the Dragons, read Brothers in Arms.

The older AD&D Dragonlance materials had locations for all the dragonarmies at various points in the setting history. I seem to recall that the Green army might have been off in the east . . . but it's been a very long time since I've looked at those books. You'll have to forgive me.

But as noted above, actual constiuency of a Dragon Army is largely glossed over in game materials since it's really up to the DM to populate them as suits his own needs.

Probably several thousands, at least, of humans, draconians, and various humanoids sans-orcs is sufficient. And actually, probably leaning more heavily towards the humans side of things in my own view. Draconians were most certainly prevelant, but I don't think they'd make up the backbone of the armies, but that's just my personal opinion.

I'd also say that the PC's, unless they're high level and leading their own armies, should not really be fighting whole armies, at least not in the 3.x or 4.x terms. In AD&D, that would have been perfectly reasonable for a 9th+ level fighter and crew, but 3.x works differently. Heroes of Battle is a good resource, especially since it shows you how to have a military campaign without having a minis wargame instead of D&D.

I do, though, encourage you to play AD&D in the setting. It really does work well for AD&D 1e if you're willing to take a hatchet to some of the rules surrounding a certain group of knights.

Welp.

Time to get busy, then.

The Red Dragonarmy moved against various targets throughout the War of the Lance under several commanders. By far the most powerful of the Dragonarmies in sheer numbers, the Red Dragonarmy suffered only from the lack of access to the Dark Queen's most powerful red wyrms, who remained in her personal employ.

Highlord Ariakas was the original commander of the Dragonarmy, but when one became five he took on a more central role and delegated the Red Dragonarmy to Phair Caron. This warrior woman would be sent to Nordmaar in a vicious and highly successful campaign alongside the Green. Parts of the Red would remain as an occupation force in Nordmaar, while the Highlord proceeded to attack Silvanesti with help from the Blue Dragonarmy. To protect the elven kingdom, Lorac Caladon unleashed the powers of the Dragon Orb, driving back the Red Dragonarmy and resulting in the death of Phair Caron at the hands of her maddened forces.

The Red Dragonarmy returned to Neraka and was reassigned to Verminaard, whose mission was to search for the "Green Gemstone Man," perhaps the single most important goal of Takhisis during the War of the Lance. Verminaard, as a powerful cleric of the Dark Queen, was also tasked with hunting down any true clerics of nonevil deities and sacred relics thereof. Verminaard's campaign began in Solamnia before sweeping downward into Abanasinia. The Heroes of the Lance infiltrated Verminaard's stronghold at Pax Tharkas and slew him in combat.

Ariakas took personal control of the Red Dragonarmy and recalled them to Neraka and surrounding environs, where they clashed with the forces gathered at Whitestone. Ariakas fell in Neraka, ending the War of the Lance.

Second in power was the Blue Dragonarmy, whose powerful dragons worked well with their commanders. The Blue Dragonarmy would be the only one to employ the undead, eventually gaining the services of Lord Soth and his minions.

It is speculated that Merinsaard was the first to command the Blue Dragonarmy, though his command (if accurate) would last only through the initial organization and training period. Kartilann was set in command for the initial mission against the Schallsea region. She fell in combat, and her post was assumed by her second-in-command, the infamous Kitiara uth Matar.

After rebuilding and regrouping with the Red Dragonarmy, the Blues would begin an extended campaign against the Solamnics in Kalaman and Hinterlund, eventually pushing them back to the High Clerist's Tower. Decimated at the Tower by a Dragon Orb, the Blue Dragonarmy retreated as the Whitestone Forces came together to launch a spring campaign against the Dragonarmies. The Golden General broke the Blue Dragonarmy at Kalaman, though a plot by Kitiara saw her captured and taken to Neraka, temporarily halting the surge of the forces of good. Kitiara returned to Neraka hoping to overthrow Ariakas, but his death threw the dragonarmies into chaos and the War of the Lance ended. The Blue Dragonarmy, under Kitiara's control, would go on to have a longer and more stable history after the war.

Third-ranked in strength was the Green Dragonarmy, a leading offensive force that also served as primary support for the campaigns of the Red and Blue Dragonarmies.

The name of the original Highlord is not known, for he was notoriously incompetent. In their first campaign after supporting the Red Dragonarmy at Nordmaar, the Green Dragonarmy attacked the tribes of Khur, not expecting the level of resistance and insurrection they would face. A tribal leader allied himself with Ariakas, putting down the local discontent and murdering the previous Dragon Highlord. Salah-Khan was able to establish an iron grip on Khur, and lurked his forces on the northern border of Silvanesti, waiting for the end of Lorac's Nightmare.

Salah-Khan's forces participated in the Solamnic campaign against the Whitestone Forces, but were badly damaged by the Qualinesti and the Golden General on different fronts. Salah-Khan was at Neraka for the manifestation of Takhisis, and in the wake of Ariakas' fall saw the Green Dragonarmy assaulted by the leaderless Red.

Fourth in estimated power, but a formidable force nonetheless, the Black Dragonarmy served a role of support and occupation of conquered territories.

Maldeev organized the formation of the Black Dragonarmy; a dangerous man, Maldeev's Black Wing ran vicious raids and campaigns of fear and intimidation. Recruiting powerful black dragons, Maldeev sought an ideal partner in battle, using dark sorcery to bind himself to his draconic mount and arranging "accidents" when a more suitable candidate came along. This behavior led him to be murdered by his new choice, the dragon Khisanth, who was exiled to the ruins of Xak Tsaroth as punishment.

The new Highlord, Lucien, completed the training of the Black Dragonarmy and led it east alongside the White Dragonarmy in a campaign against the Balifor region. Lucien, a competent commander, extended overtures to the dark dwarves and to local ogres to ally with the Dragonarmy. Adding these valuable allies to his conquered territories, Lucien extended his forces to other occupied lands to relieve other Dragonarmy forces for the war effort.

Lucien returned to Neraka for the manifestation of Takhisis; the Black Dragonarmy escaped the worst of the chaos in the wake of Ariakas' death and retreated to Balifor and Goodlund.

Smallest and weakest of the Dragonarmies, the White Dragonarmy was largely a support force, far more monstrous in composition, that saw limited action in the War of the Lance and failed at a crucial juncture.

Highlord Feal-Thas, a dark Silvanesti elf and wizard, commanded the White Dragonarmy in its early campaign alongside the Black against Balifor. The White Dragonarmy extended further into Goodlund, and subsequently lent support to the early Silvanesti campaign thanks to Feal-Thas' knowledge of his former homeland.

The white dragons fared poorly in the climate of Goodlund, and Feal-Thas explored a campaign in Icereach, eventually establishing his stronghold there at Icewall Castle and making overtures to the ogres of Daltigoth. Feal-Thas may have been preparing a campaign against Southern Ergoth, which would likely have decimated the elven refugees gathered there. However, a number of the Heroes of the Lance infiltrated Icewall Castle and slew the Highlord, seizing a Dragon Orb that would turn the tide of battle on the Solamnic front.

With its reduced force and awkward division, Ariakas assigned Toede as temporary Highlord of the White Dragonarmy. Toede did little in his time as Highlord, remaining secure in Balifor and dying in a hunting accident.

The White Dragonarmy went leaderless to Neraka, and leaderless they left for Icewall after the death of Ariakas.

Standard Unit Configuration
Draconian Armies
Even though the cost to keep these armies going was relatively low, they usually had the highest casualties of any of the armies. Normally were led by a human officer rather than allowing a draconian to have too much power. The draconians also were more liable to fight amongst each other. Their armies were structured in this way:

Type: Infantry
Commander: Human Flight Marshal
1st Brigade: 1 human Commander, 1 company of 240 Baaz Draconians, 2 companies of 150 baaz draconians.
2nd Brigade: 1 human commander, 2 companies of 150 Kapak Draconians, 1 company of 90 kapak draconian archers.
3rd Brigade: 1 human commander, 1 company of 150 kapak draconians, 1 company of 150 baaz draconians, 1 company of 150 baaz draconian archers.
Dragonwing: Dragons attached to this army.

Mercenary Infantry
This was a mixture of both human and draconian soldiers and more the standard compilation of the armies. The dragons with this group can benefit and hinder them. For draconians, it will inspire them, while with the human element it will cause them to be overcome with dragonfear if the dragon gets too near. There will also be an extra sub-commander assigned to each brigade, which was normally a baaz or kapak NCO. Their armies were structured in this way:

Type: Infantry
Commander: human flight marshal
1st Brigade: 1 human commander, 1 baaz sub-commander, 1 company of 240 baaz draconians, 1 company of 150 human heavy infantry, 1 company of 150 human light infantry.
2nd Brigade: 1 human commander, 1 kapak sub-commander, 1 company of 150 kapak infantry, 1 company of 150 human heavy infantry, 1 company of 240 human light infantry.
3rd Brigade: 1 human commander, 1 baaz sub-commander, 1 company of 150 baaz archers, 1 company of 240 human heavy infantry, 1 company of 150 human light infantry.
Dragonwing: Dragons attached to this army.

Mercenary Cavalry
In the dragonarmies, cavalry was not used as often, instead relying on dragon air power. The horses in a cavalry army had the tendency to panic whenever a dragon came near, throwing the army into chaos. When they were used, it was usually in the reserve to mop up a battle since the costs of training cavalry was so much higher than regular infantry. Their armies were structured in this way:

Type: Cavalry
Commander: human flight marshal
1st Brigade: 1 human commander, 1 baaz sub-commander, 1 company of 240 baaz draconian infantry, 1 company of 120 human heavy cavalry, 1 company of 150 human light cavalry.
2nd Brigade: 1 human commander, 1 baaz sub-commander, 1 company of 150 kapak infantry, 1 company of 160 human heavy cavalry, 1 company of 240 human light infantry.
3rd Brigade: 1 human commander, 1 baaz sub-commander, 1 company of 150 human archers, 1 company of 160 human heavy cavalry, 1 company of 243 human light infantry.
Dragonwing: Dragons attached to this army. (Optional)

Ogre Infantry
These armies are comprised of ogres from the ogre lands of Kern and Blöde. They have their own strategy with Kern ogres relying more on hit and run tactics while Blöde ogres attack in brute strength. The humans attached to these armies are usually slave conscripts who live under the threat of death for not only themselves, but for their families back in the ogre lands. Their armies were structured in this way:

Type: Infantry
Commander: Ogre Chieftain
1st Brigade: 1 ogre commander, 2 ogre sub-commanders, 3 companies of 120 ogre infantry, 1 company of 120 human heavy infantry, 2 companies of 120 human light infantry.
1st Giants: 1 ogre commander, 1 company of 30 hill giants.

Kobold Infantry
A Kobold army was comprised of infantry, slingers, and some cavalry. Natural cowards at heart, they tend to like to ambush, but when in the service of the dragonarmy they were mostly used as skirmishers. First having their slingers attack, then infantry after that only to pull back. The War Leader of the group tended to be the wiliest, craftiest, and most ruthless of all the warriors. Their armies were structured in this way:

Type: Infantry
Commander: Kobold War Leader
1st Brigade: 1 kobold lieutenant, 2 companies of 150 kobold infantry, 1 company of 100 kobold slingers.
2nd Brigade: 1 kobold lieutenant, 2 companies of 150 kobold infantry, 1 company of 100 kobold slingers.
3rd Brigade: 1 kobold lieutenant, 1 company of 150 kobold infantry, 2 companies of 50 kobold dire weasel cavalry.

Goblin Infantry
The goblin armies from the War of the Lance were comprised mainly of goblins and hogblins with even some Bugbears or Trolls. With hobgoblins being the better soldiers and having military minds were usually the leaders over their lesser goblin cousins. Most goblins came from the regions of Throt, western Khalkist Mountains, and from the Throtl Regulars.:

Type: Infantry
Commander: Hobgoblin Chief
1st Brigade: 1 hobgoblin sub-chief, 1 company of 150 hobgoblin heavy infantry, 2 companies of 150 goblin light infantry.
2nd Brigade: 1 hobgoblin sub-chief, 1 company of 150 hobgoblin heavy infantry, 1 company of 100 goblin worg cavalry, 1 company of 100 goblin archers.
3rd Brigade: 1 hobgoblin sub-chief, 1 company of 150 hobgoblin heavy infantry, 1 company of 100 goblin worg cavalry, 1 company of 100 goblin archers.

Minotaur Marine
The minotaur soldiers of the Dragonarmies were usually led by a minor chieftain of a minotaur house who was loyal to the cause. They they led their soldiers into battle which was mainly made up of Infantry and Marines. Typically they would attack from either 10 warships if in normal water, or from 20 icerigger boats if they were in the lands of Icereach.:

Type: Marine
Commander: Minotaur Chieftain
1st Brigade: 1 minotaur war chief, 2 companies of 120 minotaur marines.
2nd Brigade: 1 minotaur war chief, 2 companies of 120 minotaur marines.
3rd Brigade: 1 minotaur war chief, 2 companies of 120 minotaur marines.
4th Brigade: 1 minotaur war chief, 2 companies of 120 minotaur marines.
5th Brigade: 1 minotaur war chief, 1 company of 120 minotaur marines, 1 company of 120 minotaur infantry.

Thanks... great details!

Where did you get all the details from... I am hoping to find the resources in print. I have been buying books from all over the place but none of them had the kind of information that I found in your responses.

As for the edition we are playing in... its 2nd Ed. So... yeah we are playing in the edition that seems best geared for the setting of the war of the lance. My players are all high schoolers who have never encountered the setting before... (how do people survive with such deprivation?) :smalltongue:

I have sought to rectify that lacking by instituting a 5k exp bonus to any player that reads one of the Dragonlance novels. So far a few of them have taken me up on it. Nice to know I am affecting some peoples experiences with this game. :smallwink:

Thanks... great details!

Where did you get all the details from... I am hoping to find the resources in print. I have been buying books from all over the place but none of them had the kind of information that I found in your responses.

The plot details I got by reading lots and lots of novels. There are few pre-Chaos War novels that I haven't read.

The other data comes from Tales of the Lance: World Book of Ansalon and the War of the Lance Sourcebook.

Anyone know what a dragon army is comprised of?

40 misfit cadets deployed in 5 toons and one child genius commander.
