The Mod Wonder:

This is the Crowdfunding thread for Media Discussions. In it, you will find discussion and promotion of crowd-funded projects related to video projects, books, and the like. Crowd-funding drives for art and jewelry will be found in Arts and Crafts, while those for games can be found in General Role-playing or Gaming (Other).

As a semi-permanent and structured thread, there are two rules that need to be addressed.

Rule 1. All other board rules apply. Do not flame, do not double post, do not troll. If a crowd-funding project breaks any of the board rules (e.g. explicit materials, political or religious in nature), it will be deleted, and the person posting it will receive the appropriate warning or infraction.

Rule 2.Posting crowd-funding plugs. You may post one initial link to your crowd-funding drive, explaining the project; for our purposes, you "own" any project you post the initial link to, whether you're the creator or not. When the project is at a week or less remaining, you may post another reminder of it. You may, of course, join in any discussion of it, though we encourage that to move to the crowd funding site, itself. Do not spam the thread with reminders; if people talk about it, they talk about it.

So... I'm not sure if this is the right thread, but it IS about the right sort of Kickstarters, so here it goes!

I was considering doing a Kickstarter for a video series I'm planning on making. I have what I need to make it right now, however... the extra money of a successful Kickstarter could be incredibly useful, going to better equipment, hiring a special effects artist, better props and sets, and the like. I can do it now, but a Kickstarter could allow me to make it better.

So I was wondering what the Playground thinks is good and useful for a Kickstarter to have! I'd rather do no Kickstarter project than a bad one, but hey, talking about what's good and what's bad in film Kickstarters even in general might not be a bad discussion.

I'd say go for it but be clear on why you need the kickstarter to happen, then set a reasonable goal for what you would need to really step your production up a notch.

Well, time to dust off this thread for an Indiegogo campaign presented by Fair Trade Toronto, an organization for, well, fair trade, that is based in Toronto. It's rather a self-explanatory name. If you don't know why fair trade is a big deal, then you should check this campaign out, because it's for a beautifully-illustrated children's book (http://www.indiegogo.com/Liamsletters/x/1158005) about fair trade.

Personally, I don't care about fair trade, because I am a horrible person. But a couple of the rewards include a super sweet knitted hat, and like any TF2 player, I can't resist limited edition headwear.

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm not involved with the campaign, but it's being run by one of my friends, who is doing it on a completely volunteer basis.

Black Sheep Productions, the crew behind the Star Wars fanfilms TROOPS and IMPS: The Relentless are running an IndieGoGo campaign for the fourth chapter of IMPS. If you've never seen their work, it is both hilarious and visually stunning, and can be viewed for free at their website. (http://impstherelentless.com/) I highly recommend it. Their campaign is approaching its final day, and is still short of the funding goal. I encourage anyone who's interested to chip in. The campaign page is here. Well, I didn't see a Kickstarter thread dedicated to comics/webcomics specifically, so I'll put it here.

Dresden Codak's Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/156287353/the-tomorrow-girl-dresden-codak-volume-1) for the first print collection just went live a little over an hour ago and is already funded. It's a beautiful comic (http://dresdencodak.com/) and one of my favorites, so I'm glad to see it being successful so quickly. This collection includes the first main story arc (Hob) and many (all?) of the one-shot/short series comics from the first 5 years of publication (up through the beginning of the current story, Dark Science).

Unless additional funding will somehow make the author actually get back to making his webcomic?

Hello everybody :)

Some weeks back there was a topic here about "The Reward", a short film created at The Animation Workshop which is heavily inspired by DnD and anime's such as Mindgame and FLCL. The film is an epic, 9-minute 2D short about friendship, bromance, humor and adventure.

For those who haven't watched yet, here's a link: http://vimeo.com/58179094

And link to the topic on this forum: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=269416

The directors of the short have recently started their own animation studio SunCreature, and have launched a kickstarter campaign to raise money to create a series based on "The Reward", it's humor, world and characters.

Here's a link to the kickstarter: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1862188728/the-reward-tales-of-alethrion?ref=live

If you'd like to see more stories from the world of "The Reward", please help by donating any amount you'd like, and by spreading the word. :)

The creators of the epic fantasy short film The Reward (http://vimeo.com/58179094#) are now trying to get funding for a web series in the same world with a Kickstarter here (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1862188728/the-reward-tales-of-alethrion).

The old thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=269416) about The Reward kind of devolved into just an argument about whether it was sexist. I'd like to head that off here by pointing to the creators' message on that very topic:

Vito and Wilhelm are very much boys and therefore we wanted to caricature their idea of "cool" and "epic". A lot of our inspiration is from the classic "Conan" and old school fantasy where the heroes always have a lady at hand while slaying mighty beasts. That iconic cliché of fantasy and "Epic" was what we wanted to make fun of and stylize in the short film and that's why we chose to use ladies as a way of showing Vito and Wilhelms vision of being “epic”. It's just as much making fun of the male idea of what makes you masculine and awesome as it is making fun of the female image.

An early idea we never got to use in the short was how Wilhelm got inspired to become a warrior. They were meant to be ambushed by goblins and as they were about to get killed a lady would jump in and save them. She was meant to be a super cool gal with attitude who Wilhelm got a crush on and therefore got inspired to be as powerful as her. We didn't include this because of time issues but we liked her character a lot.

The series will be focusing on many different characters and most likely we will be having female leads as well. This will mean more diverse female characters with more depth instead of “more boobs”.

It all depends on who is the main character and what their journey is about. That was the reason for choosing the way we used females in "The Reward" and it really depends on what tells the best story. None of us are against female rights and "The Reward" just as much makes fun of the male self image as the female.

Now go throw your money at them!

Well, sort of:

What happens to the map and the people involved after Wilhelm and Vito pass it on to a new generation? How did the map come to be, and what is the story of the great mirror and the treasure behind it? Who is the character amongst all the treasures at the end, and why is he holding the treasure chest so tightly?

So here is as good a place as any.

Delta City is known as one of the greatest cities of scientific achievement on the planet. Their inventions help make the world a better place….as long as it’s in their hands. But as fame and fortune often do crime of every shape and size fell upon the city and threatened to tear the city apart from within….

In their desperation the people of Delta City cried out to their maker, they asked for angels, they prayed for saviors, what they received…

Well, I might as well post a link to this project known as "Paper Chain" I may be involved in soon. (http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/paper-chain) It's about the various generations of a family in the history of the future.

Of course, it's likely not got much funding because of how vague it is, and the creator told me as much when we talked about it. So, let me share with you a bit more information about it that he told me face-to-face:

-The basic idea behind it is that the future is not going to change in the ways we think it will, but will change in plenty of other ways.

-The main technologies involved in the plot will be nanotech, virtual reality (Done in polygon-y CGI because budget), space colonization (to mars specifically), and transhumanism/life-extention.

-The use of special effects will be relatively subtle, but also omnipresent.

-It's going to be influenced by the works of Alejandro Jorodowski, bending the rules of conventional storytelling. If you have no idea what his stuff is like, take a look at the trailer for "The Holy Mountain" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHiA3w6Y3KA) to get an idea of his style.

-He's already got a cameraman/cinematographer and special-effects artist lined up for the project.

If you can, throw a few bucks this project's way, or if not then spread the world. I'm a Tusconan born and raised, and one who wants to go into genre film, and so I do want to throw whatever support I can the way of any Tusconan genre films that I can. So, could you guys help out?

Hi, I'm running a Kickstarter for my fantasy novel Magic's Shadow (http://tiny.cc/MSkickstarter), which is based on the adventures/misadventurers of a band of "heroes" that I DMed for, ending May 1st. The story is full of gamer humor and revolves around a group of sometimes not so heroic adventurers that have to save the world while trying not to kill each other or be captured by the "authorities".

Some of the backer rewards include the book itself of course, custom character art for your own character, a RPG that ties into the story and is a mystery set in haunted ruins, original short stories, DMing by the author (AKA me), and more. The first 3 chapters are up on my blog (www.MagicsShadow.com) along with other random musings, character art, and excerpts. Please check my project out!

Thanks,

Thanks,

Relying on finding more people after launching a Kickstarter campaign is doing it wrong. The funding calculations should always be based on what you know of the current fan base and how well they'll respond. If not enough people know about it before you launch, then you'll need to spend more time building that fan base first.

I've been doing a lot of research into how various people have garnered a following and then turned it into a business, and for the most part, it means releasing free quality content on a regular basis over an extended period of time. Only then will there perhaps be a critical mass of people following the project for there to be interest in a product they'll wish to buy.

So I'm going to post it here even though it's Indiegogo rather than Kickstarter because this is the designated place for crowdfunding projects and such to be made known.

So this project is meant to secure the funds to distribute copies of a facsimile of the 1850 edited edition of the Wycliffe Bible (the first full translation of the Bible into English) to several libraries (while simultaneously allowing copies to be made and sent to backers). (http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/wycliffe-bible-facsimile-edition?c=home)

If you're interested in the history of Biblical translation, this is a great project.
If you're a medieval scholar, this is a great project.
If you just really like Bibles, this (might be) a great project.

Now, you might look at the price tag for the first reward level to offer a copy of the Bible ($250) and say "Holy crap, that's expensive!"

It feels a lot less expensive when you learn that there are two copies of the original printing of the 1850 edition on the market right now, priced at or above $5000, doesn't it? The 1850 edition has been out of print now for over 150 years, and few libraries carry a copy. This project will get new facsimiles out there and make the Wycliffe Bible more accessible to scholars than it has been in decades.

I think that's everything.

Hey folks. Some friends of mine have been working really hard to release a prologue to a D&D inspired web-series entitled, One Hit Die. The videos went live on the 12th of august, and you should give them a watch! So this is just getting started and they need all the help they can get. I've been in some live shows, with one of the actresses before, and I can vouch for her being an excellent, upstanding person, (if you are worried about giving money to strangers.)

They're running a campaign to gather funding on IndieGoGo, to produce the first season.

Here's a link to their website: http://onehitdie.com
Youtube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/OneHitDieSeries?feature=watch
and the IndieGoGo page: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/one-hit-die-season-1

If you like it consider give them a something, as the funds go to them regardless of whether they reach their goal. So even if they end up a bunch short they may be able to piece together another episode while they wait for more funding from other sources.

Thanks for your time!

Hello playground!

Rich's amazing success with the Order of the Stick Kickstarter program has been on my mind ever since I first saw it, and I've been inspired to follow in his proverbial footsteps (which I suppose are those giant footsteps in the sand up above there). I'm beginning a self-publishing career, and I'm starting with something simple: a short story I'm publishing as an ebook.

I'm holding a Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/523718715/radiance) fundraiser to raise money to hire a professional cover artist for the ebook. If the project is successful, I'll also be using funds from it to self-publish a full length novel, titled "Manifestation." The short story is currently written, revised, and formatted, and is just in need of a cover. The novel is written and in the process of revisions (I've been working on it for the past year), and will need professional editing and cover art. If the Kickstarter is especially successful, I'll be using some of the funds to hire a professional independent copy editor.

As one of the rewards for the Kickstarter, I'm offering ghostwriting services to backers at certain pledge levels. What this means is that in exchange for your support, I'll write you a story of your choice, which you will own the rights to (meaning you can publish it yourself if you wish).

I'm a professional writer with a degree in the Writing Arts from Rowan University. If you'd like to see samples of my previous writing work before considering backing the project, there are stories posted on my blog. (http://writingpossibilities.com/) I also have flash fiction (http://elisevalente.blogspot.com/2012/12/maternal-instincts-by-jason-cantrell.html) short stories (http://ravenhartassociates.com/2012/12/22/crying-flash-fiction-ghost-story/) posted elsewhere online, as well as a poem (http://quantumfairytales.com/2013/01/jcantrell/shadow/) published in an online ezine. I've also been doing freelance ghostwriting professionally since I graduated college, though this is my first venture into the self-publishing industry.

If you're interested, take a look (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/523718715/radiance), and consider making a pledge. The ebook itself is available for as little as a $1 pledge, so even a small bit of support will be enough.

Thank you.

Loading Ready Run (http://loadingreadyrun.com/) is holding a Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/811923656/lrrs-last-season-of-sketches) to fund their 11th year of weekly sketch comedy videos. They've posted a new original video EVERY Monday for 10 years now (since before YouTube was even a thing), and they've declared that 2014 will be the last year they do this.

They still have several other contracted projects with Penny Arcade, The Escapist, Wizards of the Coast, and others, so they aren't going away, just growing up and trying to get the business on a firmer footing.

Day one, and they've already reached $48,000 of their $135,000 goal (in Canadian $ since they're based in Victoria).

A friend of mine by the name of Bonnie Scott is making her first short film, and is running a Kickstarter campaign to fund it. She's an avid medieval reenactor as well as a student of Celtic folklore and huge fan of faeries, and the film, entitled Shadows of the Shadows, is intended to be in the style of old fairy tales and Arthurian legend, centering around a knight lost in an enchanted forest. The costume design is gorgeous, and I personally an auditioning for the part of the Narrator, so here I am to plug it. Please consider. A friend of mine has a record they're trying to fund. Coming close to the deadline (and sorry I didn't post this earlier...I'm a terrible friend!) and less than $800 to go! If you like surf, electronic music and rock, you'd like these guys. I've heard most of the new record and it's pretty awesome!

Gonna put out a call for Bee and Puppycat (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/frederator/bee-and-puppycat-the-series), since it's down to a week, and still hasn't quite met its goal.

Well, what is it? It's a new animation designed by Natasha Allegri, the girl behind the Fionna and Cake episode of Adventure Time. The series is about a unemployed 20-something called Bee, and a mysterious cat/puppy that may also be a space-anime prince. Together, they take weird temp jobs in a bizare universe. Fans of Adventure Time or Bravest Warriors will probably find something to love in the trippy design of the series, and it's pretty funny too.

There's a ten minute episode you can watch on youtube here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOG_UtLxh58&feature=youtu.be) which should help you decide if you want to support this project.

How about a Christmas themed Kickstarter project? (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/itoso-tag/santa-company)

I was poking about Kickstarter and ran across this project to create an animated story called Santa Company (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/itoso-tag/santa-company) where a group of friends who work for a corporate version of Santa Claus decide to answer a "flawed" letter to Santa/request for a gift.

It looks like a cute and sweet, kid-friendly show and it doesn't need much more to be fully funded. I'd love to see it hit the $150,000 stretch goal too.

Just in time for the holidays right?:elan:

so.. apparently Kung Fury (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72RqpItxd8M) is an actual kickstarted project, and not a joke trailer.

it's like watching Bill and Ted's excellent adventure mixed with Karate Kidd and played straight by Charlie Sheen from his glory days in Hot Shots.

The WAKFU Kickstarter!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1836563008/wakfu-the-animated-series?ref=live

Okay, I don't know if folks here are fans of Wakfu, so let me toss in a few words of explanation.

There is a French animation studio called Ankama. Ankama makes video games and cartoons. The cartoon in question is called 'Wakfu' and it is a gorgeously animated and very pretty show.

Stylistically, Wakfu is like a mix between Anime and Disney.

The story is set in the game universe of Dofus, and involves an adventuring party going out on epic quests. There are monstrous bad guys and yes, dragons.

HOLY COW, the DRAGONS. :D

The Kickstarter is fully funded after three days, so this is a lead-pipe cinch.

The prices for Blu-Ray disks alone are incredibly good:

When the pledges reach 200,000 Canadian dollars, you will be getting 52 full half-hour HD blu-ray episodes for about 65 cents each. Wow. Gotta love the French. :)

This is an incredible deal, folks. If you love games you will adore the Brotherhood of Tofu, and the show is just beautiful.

The first is Punk the Capital (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1137256310/punk-the-capital-straight-from-washington-dc): a documentary about the DC punk scene from the mid 70s to 80s (AKA: the birth of harDCore). Currently getting lots of love from Dave Grohl and the rest of the Foo Fighters.

The second is Viveltre (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/682551587/handcrafted-marshmallows-small-batches-giant-flavo): handmade marshmallows of many different flavors with all natural, top end ingredients. They've got a bacon and bourbon flavor, what's not to love!?

Hello everyone! I am in the final days of running a kickstarter for my print and play dungeon crawl game Darkfast Dungeons.

The Darkfast Dungeons print and play dungeon crawl game is in the final 4 days on Kickstarter.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/758595332/darkfast-dungeons

The stretch goals are really worth it. So many people have helped make this a really worthwhile project and because it's a print and play product you can just print what you like and use what you want.

You can get on board for as little as $10. Here is what you get, plus access to all the stretch goals:

https://s3.amazonaws.com/ksr/assets/002/296/223/aed4d29c096ac7821150f6173e7c266a_large.jpg?1405615 394

For $5 more you get a set of multi-layered fold flat walls to add a new dimension to the game:

https://s3.amazonaws.com/ksr/assets/002/296/231/268438bb79eb4ffbc7ae0ecae46b108f_large.jpg?1405615 481

It's a tile-based game so it's different every time. The tiles and minis also work great for standard dungeon crawls and other games.

Someone I know locally is kickstarting a debut album themed around mental health and all that stuff. It's an interesting project and has already achieved the basic level of funding, but time is starting to get scarce and there's some tantalisingly close stretch goals that could really add extra shine to the project.

Turn of Phrase (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/145750111/turn-of-phrase-debut-album)

We want to record an album of powerful rock songs which intelligently and emotively explore mental health and existential doubt.

---

About This project

Turn of Phrase is a new band bringing powerful raw and visceral rock music. Stylistically, our sound is distinctly in the modern rock opus, while pulling on both grunge and blues influences. We have already written fourteen songs which we will work on and choose the best for the album. We think they are all strong songs that feel fresh, dramatic and innovative while still accessible to most listeners. We believe music matters. We have a deep sound and lyrically our music tackles weighty subjects including mental health, religion and various philosophical matters.

They also have a couple of Demo's up on soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/turnofphrase).
There we go, that's my good deed for the day.

Hello fellow giants, I would like to share with you a film kickstarter I am putting together with a friend of mine titled Project Fear. Project Fear will be a paranormal investigation series but with a twist: only one person stays overnight in a haunted location to search for spirits. If you have seen other paranormal investigation shows you may have noticed there really isn't anything scary about searching for ghosts when your surrounded by friends and production crew. I want to show what true fear is like while also trying to find proof that spirits exist. We are doing heavy advertising before the kickstarter goes live, and I believe that this show could be very successful, but it has to start somewhere! Below is a link to the kickstarter preview and our facebook page. Please like subscribe and share and help me get this project off the ground!

From the campaign, the film is "a comedy mockumentary about the people who want to ban tabletop gaming and their epic quest: to produce the ultimate anti-RPG movie."

I'm a fan of Seanan McGuire (science fiction/fantasy author, she wrote the "Feed" series under the name Mira Grant, and also "Every Heart a Doorway"), and so when I saw she has a new story in an anthology that's being kickstarted, I backed it. The anthology also hits a lot of the things I like--it's a bunch of stories set in magical schools, which is a setting I love, and it's geared towards showcasing LGBT relationships. So I'm really hopeful that it funds and gets published.

 Hey all, I'm a huge anime and manga fan so I try to support as many Kickstarters for anime and manga as possible. Well, there's a big one right now! Aria the Animation! (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/160939828/lets-dub-aria-the-animation) Aria is a slice-of-life sort of series set on the watery world of Aqua where Akari Mizunashi spends gentle days training to become an undine, a female gondolier who navigates the canals of the city of Neo-Venezia. As she guides residents, tourists, and friends, Akari grows and faces challenges. This is a sweet story of friendship and a young girl pursing her dream.

We're trying to reach a goal that will mean every episode, every poetic moment, and so much content never before released outside Japan will be brought to America! The project's been going for a bit but we really need every pledge to get to the last few goals!

Will you join Akari on her journey to become one of Aria Company's best gondoliers? Will you visit the charming world of Aqua to see a possible vision of the future? Will you help make over a thousand anime fans' hopes come true and pledge even just a dollar to get us closer to the goal of seeing the entire Aria franchise released on Blu-Ray with English dubbing?

Just remember: no sappy lines allowed!

Thank you all so much for reading! If even just one of you comes to join us in this Kickstarter, if even one person finds joy in this anime, then that will be enough.

JourneyQuest Season 3.5 & Campaign Setting

The dear gentlemen at Zombie Orpheus are looking to expand upon their story for JourneyQuest. Side characters and stories that they would really, really like to tell. And an official world bible. Ok, maybe Matt and and Christian are better at explaining (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yHmRui5oEw) (spoilers if you haven't seen the web series).

The link for the kickstarter is here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/zombieorpheus/journeyquest-35-and-campaign-setting/

Well ... it started out as a journey and then it just kind of became this whole different ... quest.

I'm gearing up a kickstarter project to expand my duck farm, should that go in arts and crafts?

The Mod Wonder: That seems the most appropriate, yes.

I'd say go for it but be clear on why you need the kickstarter to happen, then set a reasonable goal for what you would need to really step your production up a notch.

Some weeks back there was a topic here about "The Reward", a short film created at The Animation Workshop which is heavily inspired by DnD and anime's such as Mindgame and FLCL. The film is an epic, 9-minute 2D short about friendship, bromance, humor and adventure.

The dear gentlemen at Zombie Orpheus has launched a campaign for season 4 of JourneyQuest!

If you haven't heard of it before, it is a hilarious story of a group of four adventurers, hired by the Wicked Kings to find the Sword of Fighting. Their task is to destroy it before it topples the Wicked Kings. Naturally, each of the adventurers have his or her reason to quest for the sword. The adventurers are looking for the Temple of All Dooms (because All Dooms have more ring to it than Select Dooms), said to contain the Sword of Fighting.

They are being followed by a clumsy bard hoping to write their epic (but seriously doubting that it will ever be more than a sad tale of failure), an assassin and an angry orc war party.

There are only 8 days left to go for the Kickstarter for the Girl Genius (https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php) action adventure by the creators of Teslagrad (https://store.steampowered.com/app/249590/Teslagrad/).
And since the Foglios REALLY want this to happen, in addition to the rewards listed on the Kickstarter page, everyone who backs at the $30 level or higher will get a PDF of Girl Genius Volumes 1-20 and Buck Godot plus some extra pages (which would usually come in at about $200).

Here is the link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ggadventures/girl-genius-adventures-in-castle-heterodyne
