You enter the shop to find it stocked primarily with spices and fragrant woods, oils and extracts, and a number of curiously carved statuettes. A man at the counter looks up at you over his reading glasses as you enter but says nothing. An open book lies on the counter in front of him.

You reach a large gatehouse in the city's outer wall, known as Rivergate. It stands open. On the other side, you can see the great river rushing by with a stone causeway built into it just inches above water level, the river flowing through channels under and through the stone. The Fortress is built on a large island in the middle of the causeway.

Looking past the island, you can see another large gatehouse on the far shore. Just beyond this gatehouse is the Docks and outer slums of the city. A shudder sneaks its way down your back.

As you cross King's Causeway, you reach the large gatehouse on the far end of the bridge. No fewer than twenty heavily armed guards stand at the gate. One of the guards stops you.

"Hold on a moment. What's your business in the Docks?"

"Humans just tend to die faster. Can't say for sure why, but the shadows seem to like humans best. Once the shadows take you, you're never seen again. Oh, we'll find a piece here and a piece there, but that's about it."

The interior of the Sad Flint is quite crowded. People are coming and going all over the rather large barroom. Patrons of any possible description abound, most content to drink the beers in their hands. No one bothers to turn their head when yet another patron walks in. The atmosphere of the place is slightly dingy, but comfortable.

A lone half-giant is serving as the bartender at the long bar across from the entrance. Round tables with an average of four chairs each litter the common area, although several have borrowed chairs from others nearby. More than half of them seem occupied by patrons of some description and number. A pair of armored bouncers guard a double door along the west wall.

Barmaids of many different races weave in and out of the traffic, delivering food and drinks, as well as picking up empty crockery and more than a few pick-up lines.

Here you stand in the heart of the city, watching people come and go, functioning as the very lifeblood of the city. The most prominent building in the area is a three-story inn named The Sad Flint. It is known as the place to be for relaxing adventurers and those seeking a good story, a good drink, or a good night's rest. Across the Plaza from The Sad Flint is Ezekiel's Supplies, one of two major suppliers of adventuring and exploration gear in the city. Numerous other shops line the sides of The Plaza, including a music shop named The Howling Song, Jim Juewliers's Gem Jewelry, Erbauer's Enchanted Devices and Dynamos, Sunderham's Imports, and numerous other shops and merchant carts.

You may also select one of the other buildings that hasn't yet been publicly defined.

You enter the shop immediately between Sunderham's and the Sad Flint.

Inside, you find that the shop is just one large room stuffed full of luxury furniture made of all types of exotic wood. Chairs, couches, tables, armoires, and even a few bed frames are interspersed with wooden statuettes, picture frames, and a few things you can't immediately identify. The scent of wood and varnish fills your nose.

The only person you see is an elf sitting in a high-backed chair upholstered in fine leather near the door, his feet propped up on a luxuriant ottoman. He appears to have dozed off.

Inside, you find dozens of hats of all shapes, sizes, colors, and designs ranging from simple to elegant to outlandish to "How the hell does that sit on one's head?!" A woman is currently brushing a large purple suede fedora and trying to fluff up the blue feather sticking out of it. She smiles at you as you enter.

We're headed down stairs tomorrow to take out a big ol' rats' nest what got itself established. We could use an extra sword."

They lead you north through Old Town, turning to the right and eventually ending up in Guildsman. They travel along the inside of the city wall until they come to a particular sewer grate which has a large rock placed on top of it and a warning sign saying simply "Danger".

They remove the rock, light torches, and drop down into the sewer.

The sewers here are massive, tunnels nearly 8 feet by 8 feet. Two to three inches of filth sloshes slowly forward along the center of the tunnel, though it gets shallower near the walls and has about a foot of dry space on each end.

The three men with you simply trudge through the murky water, their knee high boots protecting their feet from getting wet.

You travel about three blocks before Egbert motions the party to stop. He squats down and pulls a large hunk of meat that looks disturbingly like the leg of a small humanoid from his pack and holds it out. A small, viciously armed kobold steps out of the shadows, takes the meat, and holds a whispered conversation with Egbert before disappearing back into the shadows.

Egbert stands, turns to the group, and says, "Right then, they've given us permission to pass and say they'll pay for each rat tail we bring back to them."

Volprecht and Gregor nod agreement and draw their weapons.

It seems that your employers are kobolds...

Well, not like they're having me run around killing innocents or anything, if kobolds want the rats gone, it doesn't really hurt anyone, except maybe rats. Makhain keeps an eye out and prepares for a fight.

Egbert stops the party a little ways later, motions for silence, then creeps forward. He points down the hall, raises 3 fingers, indicating that there are three of the rats up ahead.

He then starts with five fingers and counts down to zero, at which point the three of them silently run headlong around the corner to attack rats.

You get a surprise round action (probably to move around the corner) then roll for initiative.

In the future, can you put attack and damage rolls together and each set on a different line? E.g.

Attack1 [roll] Damage1 [roll]
Attack2 [roll] Damage2 [roll]Your first claw hits, but your second misses.

The rat creatures are far more quick than you would expect. They each attack you before your allies can get there.

Both manage to bite through your armor, dealing [roll0] and [roll1] damage.

Yeah, I can do that. Side note, by both do you mean that 1 is dead, or did the third attack and miss?

Makhain keeps on moving through the pain of the bites, making a mental note to make sure he doesn't get any diseases from this after the job's finished.

About three minutes later you hear Volprecht curse and come running back down the tunnel towards you.

"It's a BIG one. Run!"

"How big?"

"Big enough!"

Egbert stops him.

"Now hold on a minute. If it's just one of them usual big ones, I think the four of us can take it."

"No way, this thing is vicious, and there's a whole nest of the small ones, like 20 of them, and they're coming this way, and we've got to GO!"

Gregor says, "I agree with Squirt. We can stand shoulder to shoulder and block the whole tunnel. We stink Squirt in the middle and Vole in the back behind him with a long arm. Egbert, you and me flank the little guy, and we should be able to hold out... if they don't come around and flank us."

Gregor pulls a ranseur out of his apparently magic backpack and hands it to Volprecht.

"That good with you, Eg?"

"Sounds like a good plan. Let's do it. I'll take left side."

The four of you take up stances.

You hear a roar and smell the creature before it appears. Filth and sweat fill your nostrils such that the air of the sewer before smelled fresh in comparison. A rat creature the size of the humans in your group come charging around the corner, its slaver lathered into a near rabid foam as is pants heavily, hungry for blood.

A half dozen of the smaller ratlings come running behind it, obviously trying to stay out of its way.

Roll initiative.
If you would prefer, I can just roll your initiative for you in the future to save time and number of posts...

GregorThe large rat lifts a massive club and charges at you, swinging at Gregor with all his might. He score a lucky hit and deals [roll0] damage.

The sound of scrunching flesh and cracking bones makes you start to wonder if standing to fight was such a good idea.

The other rats hang back for now, wary of what will happen.

Egbert jabs his own weapon into the beast, but it fails to penetrate the leathery hide.

EDIT: Numbers are off a bit, marking the changes here:
Attack Roll: +11 base -6 power attack +2 Rage +2 giant killing +4 soaring = +13 total, confirm roll should be 27.
Damage Roll: 7d6+4 base +4 giant killing +12 power attack +3 rage = +23, inital roll is 40, crit roll is 1d6+63 for a total of 68 damage if the 27 hits, 40 if not.

I'm sorry, but I don't see how you're getting that damage roll on your crit confirmation... Could you explain that one to me?

Damage for a normal swing is 1d6+23 with my rage and giant killing style with full power attack. Doubled, that's 2d6+46. Soaring Raptor does +6d6 which doesn't multiply. The initial roll got me 40 on 7d6+23, so to roll for a crit, I added 1d6+23 to the 40 that already rolled, getting me a grand total of 1d6+63. A point by point breakdown is 2d6 muliplied weapon die, +6d6 Soaring Raptor strike (the rolls on these come out to be 22 total), +7 for having 20 strength while raging, which becomes +14 with doubling. +4 for Giant Killing Stance, which becomes +8 with doubling, and +12 for power attack with a 2handed weapon, doubled to 24. So it comes out to be 22+14+8+24, for a total of 68.

Okay. It was the adding the total from the previous roll to the confirmation damage roll that was throwing me off. I hadn't seen someone do that on the forums before...
Also, even if they use the same die for damage, in the future, could you please separate out the rolls for different effects? It just makes it easier for me to keep track of what's going on and apply DR and immunity and whatever should it apply.
E.g. [roll0] + [roll1] + whatever else.
It a little more work for you but MUCH less work for me. :smalltongue:Your attack tears open the brute's abdomen, bile, blood, and entrails spill out. It seems only to enrage him.

Volprecht stabs at him with the ranseur, dealing an additional [roll2] damage.

Gregor's weapon manages only to hit the area you already destroyed, dealing no significant damage.

The smaller rats, seeing their champion so easily brutalized turn tail and run.

The brute, enraged by you, swings his club down at your head with all his enraged strength. You manage to avoid a direct blow to your head, which would have been fatal, but still take [roll3].

Egbert tries to stab the brute again, managing to do only insignificant damage.

Two of his attacks hit, dealing more horrid damage. However, the creature continues to survive on adrenaline induced fury, not knowing that it should indeed be dead.

Volprecht and Gregor finally manage to bring it down, and Egbert slices through its throat just to be sure... twice.

"Damn, that was a big'un. Volprecht, you had the right idea to run, but Squirt here managed to turn the tide. We ought to get a fair price for this one's tail."

I um... didn't notice the eternal wand in your inventory when I approved your character... Eternal wands can't be divine spells, and you have to be able to cast spells to activate it or use UMD. I guess I just missed seeing it, or I would have said something earlier...

An eternal wand holds an arcane spell ... allows any character who can cast arcane spells to use
An eternal wand holds a single arcane spell ... Any character who can cast arcane spells can activate

You find a number of the small ones, most of which seem to be adolescents, which are rather wimpy and easily dispatched. You collect a total of 18 rat tails plus the tail for the big one before you hear a ROAR coming from not too far away. You aren't sure, but it sounds even bigger than the big one you fought. Even Egbert decides that it's time to run.

When all is said and done, you gain 600 XP from combat.

The four of you travel back to the kobold lair, and the one who spoke to you earlier comes out to meet you carrying a small bag of gold. He counts out the money for the 18 tails. When he finishes, Egbert pulls out the tail taken from the large one.

"How much will you give us for killing this beastie?"

When he sees the tail, it is obvious he recognizes what it is and just gawks at it. He turns and runs through a small hole. A few minutes later he returns and begins speaking in kobold to Egbert. Since you do not know the language, you understand nothing of the conversation.

Egbert turns smiling. "They're going to give us a thou gold for the biggun!"

He finds a small plot of land about 40 ft x 40 ft with a circle of ash tree saplings and plenty of grass. A small statue in the shape of Ehlonna's holy symbol rests in the center of the circle.

Moving northeast towards Guildsman, he sees numerous shops, a few fancier houses, and lots of places to spend money. The closer to Guildsman that he gets, the less fancy and more utilitarian the buildings become. Further down the road, the buildings appear to become workshops and smithies and the like rather than the retail shops, taverns, inns, and living spaces common in Midtown. Guildsman reveals itself to be primarily an industrial district.

A Gather Information check, asking for directions, or several posts about wandering the streets and looking at things will be required to find where such a place would exist.

The sun is beginning to go down, and you haven't managed to stumble across any mercenary guilds in the area. You have found the headquarters of two trade guilds, though you don't know much about them beyond being related to crafting somehow.

Inside, you find yourself in a small antechamber with a crude wooden bench on one wall and a small desk along the other. Behind the desk sits a young man of about 17 or 18. He appears to be doing some paperwork of some kind but quickly puts it away when you enter and stands to greet you.
