The first thing everyone notices about New Orleans is just how old it feels. It's not just the French Quarter, the whole place feels lived-in, worn-down.
The younger generation, as always, doesn't really seem to notice. They plug away at their jobs, waste their money, and raise their hordes of squalling babies the same as any other city. But the older folk, some of them still remember the secret truths.
And a few still practice them.
--------------------------------------
The Hierarch of New York, the esteemed Numenor Vellus, has seen fit to send your cabal to New Orleans in response to a call for help. An old ally of his, Janessa Seagull, and her cabal has come under attack. Allies go missing, contacts turn up dead, and some family members have been acting unusually. With Mardi Gras coming up the city's mages are stretched beyond capacity already, and so Janessa has called in an old favor.
--------------------------------------
The shrill sound of a cheap motel phone pierces the darkness. With it comes memories of a task levied upon you, and a red-eye flight the night before.
You are all in a double suite in the Blackbird Motel, near the New Orleans International airport. The rooms are joined by a facing pair of doors, lockable from their respective rooms. Arrival last night was a blur, but the dim glow of the predawn sky reveals a tasteless yellow and brown decor and aged furniture.
A look at the alarm clock reads 5:15 AM. The phone rings again.

Shi yawns as the phone rings. Looking at the clock she moans. Not loudly, but enough for anyone to understand her regret at being awoken. Her arm reaches out for the phone, accidentally knocking over the ancient katana propped against the end table. She picks up the receiver and lets out a small, "Hello?"

For a student of the famed Cornell University in New York, there is no such physical state as 'sleep'. Instead, these elite students would only acknowledge two states of being throughout the 24 hours of every passing day: 'fully awake', and 'fully caffeinated'.
All joking aside, the girl currently rooming with Shi was used to being an early riser. Most premed and pharmacy students are relatively serious about their academics when compared to most sleepy-eyed liberal arts students, and for Alyssa, it's much easier to retain information before a test if she could skim through the material one last time before the day's classes. As a result, she was not in the room when the motel phone began to ring, and only returned with a plate of French toast in hand when the younger girl finally answered the call.
"Oh, is it time already?" she asked, her words slurring from a piece of toast that she kept clinched between her lips. The girl was already dressed casually for the trip to the continental breakfast area, although one could almost swear she is wearing less than the pajama robes that she had worn to bed. A low-cut blouse that was tied together just above her waist, a transparent pink lace jacket that is kept unbuttoned, a pair of ripped jean shorts barely covering her thighs, and a set of black hosiery and slippers. One could almost tell that she was dressing mostly for attention, although the girl did not seem to care. Instead, she sat casually in her bed and flicked her mouse, continuing an IM conversation from a few minutes prior.

SweetAngelica: ya bye thx again for commish.
"So, what's the directive?" she asks lazily, powering down her laptop after quickly transferring the profits to her bank account. Her loot from the breakfast area consisted only of various kinds of toast and water; the girl pointed at one of the cups, and the clear liquid within transformed into a fizzling, carbonated substance quite similar to Mountain Dew. She took a sip from the cup, and placed the other one near Shi. "Oh, yeah, apparently all they have at this place are bread and water, although I can turn it into juice or soda, if you want me to."

Remembering where she was and why, she turned her head to look at the clock, and beyond it the other bed. Slightly embarassed at her previous meaningless panic, she wondered if her roommate would awake soon, or if she would have to take a mystery call in the wee hours of the morning.

Looking at the clock as he gets out of bed, he quickly makes his way to the bathroom before any of the others beat him too it. After freshening up he walks out and begins getting ready for the day, Who was on the phone?

Sitting up in the bed, Shi's blanket falls down to expose the fact that she fell asleep with her clothes on. Her school uniform is very rumpled, and looks like its been put on backwards. Taking no notice of that fact, she reaches over to the end table and grabs the pen and paper sitting there, and in response to Altssa's question, writes a hasty Pepsi, please. She then holds the pad up for the young girl to see the note.

"Yeah, sure," Alyssa muttered; she tapped the cup closest to Shi; the Latin words on her right hand bracelet seemed to glow for a moment with a bright blue light before fading to normal. The liquid in the cup, too, transformed from what seemed to be clear water to a fizzing dark substance. It was regular coke, however, and not really Pepsi. The girl was simply curious whether the often advertised Pepsi Challenged had any basis, and whether Shi could tell the difference between the two.
Her setup complete, the girl allowed herself to fall on the second bed, barely missing her own tablet as she sprawled with her head and limbs almost forming a perfect star. As Shi was still on the phone and the other two was still not yet awake, the girl began picking at the little balls of fabric that have gathered on the pillow, marveling at how positively ancient it was compared to most established hotels.
"So, what's the mission?" she asked when the phone call finally ended, turning her head only enough to see the other girl through the corner of her eye. She was supposed to be the upperclassman between the two, but that, too, you could not really tell from the actions of the two girls.

Sam pulls on her jacket and checks the zipper on her bag before opening the door between the two rooms. Wrapped deeply in the shroud of forgetting, Sam causes no ripples or more than momentary notice when she agrees to accompany the others.
She enjoys the irony that the powerful spell her sleepy mind assembled affects them fully... and yet affects them not at all, as they usually accept her quiet agreement with the same instantly forgotten air.
She's excited to meet their host, to measure her actions and words and learn more about the problem she is here to solve.

"No, wait. She said she had a friend in the lobby to pick us up. But, something in her voice..."
Shi swings her legs out of the bed, and begins to pull her socks back up from where they had scrunched down as she slept.
"I think we had better be creful with this 'friend' of Janessa's" Finished with the socks, **** flips her bright pink hair back over her shoulders and bunches it together into one long ponytail that runs all the way down her back, then stands up and picks up her katana.

"Hmm? Of course not. What makes you think that?" The girl suddenly bolted from the bed, untying the ends of her blouse and fastening the buttons like it was supposed to be worn. She shot a quick, mischievous look to her roommate as she walked to her pack, as if she was not apologetic for the little trick that she just pulled. Then, turning her attention back to her belongings, she withdrew a flak jacket and a vest of thin Kevlar. She meditated upon these items for a while; deciding, possibly, whether it was worth sacrificing her appearance to actually wear armor on this mission. It is, after all, the middle of summer in the deep South. Her normal Kevlar-and-sweater combo is more likely to reward her with terrible heatstroke than afford any more reasonable protection than what her unseen armor could provide.
"That sounds quite ominous, hmm," she sighed, a bit annoyed at Shi's sudden new revelation. Ignoring the two suits of armor for a minute, Alyssa pulled out a Chinese Type-84 rifle from one of its deeper components; the thing is a bit bulky and mostly unsuitable for carrying around without being suspected of trying to rob a bank, although...she quickly loaded the rifle and pulled out a pink umbrella with her other hand. She grinned faintly, the words on her bracelet once again beginning to faintly glow.
"Combine," she whispered. Then, as if unsatisfied with the result, she repeated her chant, not even concerned with the aesthetics of channeling the magic through her bracelet this time. In an instant, the rifle merged together with the umbrella in its entirety, resulting in an umbrella that is otherwise no different from its original appearance. Closer scrutiny, however, reveals a hidden muzzle at its tip and what appears to be a trigger and a safety near the handle portion. Apparantly, a chamber is also hidden there, allowing for the umbrella-rifle to be reloaded...although most civilians would be hard-pressed to identify this contraption as an actual weapon. Still, the girl never really liked carrying a rifle around, cumbersome as it is to use, and probably would not have done so if it had not been for the imminent warning from her friend.
Satisfied with the result, the girl slipped out of her lace jacket and replaced it with a short leather jacket; the item is designed mostly to be worn during the summer, thus extended only a bit below her chest, was too short to be buttoned properly, and left quite a bit of room for proper ventilation of the arms with flaring sleeves. Alyssa unzipped a hidden pocket on the jacket's inside and stuffed her pistol inside, ensuring that it was properly loaded and the safety applied. Perhaps if there was confirmation of danger, she would have worn her Kevlar vest instead; however, it was so much better to appear the part of a (sexy) student than that of a SWAT officer that happened to be 19 years of age.
"I guess we should greet her," she smiled, fastening her boots into place.

Shi smiled as she slipped her feet into a pair of shoes sitting next to the bed. Ancient blade in one hand, the young woman reached down for a bright polished staff with an orb suspended inside a large V at its end, but decides she may need her hand free. Leaving the staff for now, Shi looks at her roommate.

With surprising speed, the girl opened the door and was giggling off down the hall, her pink hair flowing behind her.

"Hey, didn't..." Alyssa could not even finish her sentence before the pink-haired girl disappeared completely from sight. With a very audible sigh, she tugged a bit at her hose for a bit, silently bemoaning how her clothing were now beginning to stick to her body. New Orleans summers are quite annoyingly hot (and humid!) compared the the more temperate summers of her home state, and the girl - a Northerner by heart - was far from being used to this strange climate.
She wasn't going to chase after Shi, though. "There was no reason to work herself into even more of a sweat," she thought to herself, topping off her choice of clothing with a boyish cap before stuffing everything else - Kevlar vest, laptop, and assortments of other clothing - back into her baggage. As it was mostly clothing and thus very lightweight, the girl very easily threw the whole thing over her frail body and departed to meet the others in the cabal.

A short sidewalk runs up both sides of the motel's room-strip, flanked by parking spaces and shoddy metal box-type grilling stations. This early, only one other patron appears to be awake, an older white man smoking a tobacco pipe at the far end of the motel.
At the front end of the property stands the main office and adjoining restaurant. The glass is fairly heavily tinted, but blurry memories from last night's check-in paint it the same tasteless yellow and brown scheme as the rooms, with a bonus of dingy linoleum flooring.
Interior, for those of you who enter:
Inside the receptionist is audible somewhere in the back of the office, muttering groggily. The lobby is mostly as you remember it, with the notable addition of a young man standing by the desk. Those of you with active Mage Sight spells:can tell he is a mage.
Everyone please make a Wits + Occult -3 roll.

The young man is a fairy average looking white guy, just tall enough to be annoyed that he isn't six feet even. His loose, short-sleeved, and white button up shirt is untucked and his kahki shorts exten past his knees. A pair of new looking white toe shoes and short socks complete the look. His hair is a lightish brown and cut short enough that he didn't have to worry about styling it.
He didn't turn to Sam for several seconds. When he did she saw that he was wearing very dark glasses and holding a folded up cane.
"Did you really think that was necessary? Besides being exceptionally rude, it doesn't exactly help you make a good impression now does it?"

Alyssa made it to the lobby a bit later than her cabal-mates. She paused for a moment at the sight of the young (blind?) man, considering what Shi had warned about the approach of Janessa's "friend". It was still best to be sure, however - her hands made a few distinguishable notions before her eyes, and although no sleeper could see it, her eyes became just a slightly different tint of light blue; with it, she scanned the scene around her - especially the boy - for any sign of something that could be suspicious or harm her.
"Nothing," she whispers to herself. Even if anyone could hear her mumbling, it was difficult to tell whether the girl was relieved or disappointed at this development. Nevertheless, the girl greeted this newcomer with her typical friendly and jovial voice. She was wearing her best friendly smile at that moment and bowing courteously to the young man - not that he could see any of it, if her assumptions were correct, but it has become more of a force of habit for the girl.
"Would you happen to be Janessa's friend? My name is Alyssa, sophomore at Cornell U and part-time digital artist. It's nice to meet you." The girl would have been a bit more cautious about the greeting, although the fact that this man was even able to identify Sam's presence in the first place made her quite certain that the individual was, at least, not a chance tenant. The words 'Janessa's friend' was still spoken in a relatively hushed tone, however, as if she was careful that no unintended recipient would catch that one word. Her eyes flared a lighter shade of blue for a second time; the mystical signatures of a mage was, at this point, now clear to her amidst the varied lifelines - or lack thereof - swirling about the hotel lobby. Perhaps she should have been a bit more cautious, although the fact that the boy did not immediately attack Sam upon identifying her was, at the very least, evidence that he was not going to immediately threaten anyone here.
Alyssa stepped a bit closer, but still maintaining an arm's distance from the new arrival. She was leaning on the desk at this point, although far enough from the receptionist as to not appear rude. "You'll have to excuse us for our rudeness. We're still only a bunch of young girls plus chaperone..." the girl shot a mischievous look at Cody as she announced those words, then continued in a somber tone, "...visiting the city for Mardi Gras, so we have to exercise a bit of caution in a new city. You know, thieves and other dangerous elements around." She made sure to phrase the statement so that it would not seem too silly to the receptionist or any other sleepers abound, although if the boy was really a mage, he would probably understand what she meant. A cabal in a new city exercising caution is about as common as litter on the streets.

I'm not certain what is going on her IC or OOC. Incognito presence is not invisibility.
On the downside it has no effect on folks awareness of her presence. They know when she enters a room just as if she was unenchanted. Furthermore, it would have no effect on mindless things like cameras, or video from beyond her spell range.
However, on the upside, it should require a contested roll matching my successes (7 in this case) or you "sense nothing special about her and so are as apt to dismiss her presence as they are that of anyone else." The book says it requires a mental protection spell to get a contesting roll, I would extend that to supernaturals getting to roll their innate resistance+senses (like gnosis or gnosis+arcanum of active sensing spell, or potence+auspex), but I would demand a good reason before making the spell any weaker.
If a single success on a wits+compose roll was enough to disregard the anonymity of the spell and start picking apart my personal magic then it would be a truly useless spell. I suspect Destrude intended your perception roll to detect my entering the room, as an anonymous uninteresting passerby so you could do whatever you would choose to do in that case... which could be to strike up conversation or move away.

As for you there in the back," he spoke in Cody's direction, "I try to think of how much good Karma I must be building up."

"Hmm," the girl replied simply. She stared up at the ceiling for a moment (with her mage sight still active), turning her attention briefly to Cody to acknowledge his little outburst. "There are times when caution is needed, and times when a little bit of trust will get the job done," she mumbled, carefully laying her lower jaw on the wooden surface of the counter while still keeping attention on the blind mage. "I'm not really a believer that life is still worth living if you color in cynical shades 100% of the time, and I'm willing to risk the off chance that you're a ghost-dragon waiting to steal our souls. However, if that's what you're looking for...well, why not? I'm pretty sure all of us could use another one."
"Speaking of which, I guess I should not ask you for the same, in that case," she shot him a rather coy look, then continued in a rather friendly manner for what she was about to say. "Mind if I called you 'guru', in that case? I think it's quite an artful nickname."

"Call me whatever you like. At the moment I introduce myself as Ajax, but that is mostly to make a point. As to ghost dragons..." he wrapped his knuckles over the portion of the counter that appeared to be made of wood.
"Now then, what passes for food here is on that table by the door, the smell of coffee should lead you there. Please get enough that you won't be hungry later. I would like to be going soon.

Right as the word "nickname" is leaving Alyssa's lips, the prickling feeling running down your collective backs ramps up intensely, peaking in an audible tearing sound from behind the desk.
In a split second there is the impression of a faintly glowing man, seemingly stepping out of a slit in reality, and bursting forth an array of translucent blue-black tendrils. The scream of the receptionist sounds from behind the creature as it staggers towards Alyssa.

"Dually noted," she smiled. Alyssa was already moving away from the scene as she spoke to the other boy. If nothing else, that supernatural shiver through her spine was enough to convince her that something was not right, such as...well, a partially-humanoid tentacle monster would probably count towards that notion.
The girl identified the water cooler next to one of the lobby walls, threw herself towards it, and knelt behind it so that it covered most of her body leaving only part of her face, her arms, and her weapon visible to the monster. In that position, she took only a brief second to aim the tip of her umbrella at the monstrosity. Both the safety and trigger of the type-84 rifle were hidden inside the umbrella's ribs, although the girl had crafted the umbrella-rifle combination before, and know by heart where both lay in the handle.
They were still in the presence of the receptionist, although it's not like there was any other choices that presented themselves - other than maybe to flee from the scene, which may as well be just as undesirable. Her hand steadied; she was still wearing a faint smile on her face, presumably partially at the non-living status of this creature. A single gunshot resounded across the room as a bullet flew unerringly at the creature.
"So, 'Guru', what do you think this tentacle monster is?" she shouted - perhaps a bit loudly, but still with a rather cheerful attitude.
I rolled firearms on the other thread, and since Alyssa moved far enough away from the monster, she can fire to ignore defense. 5 damage if there aren't mitigating factors besides armor.

Dammit. Valencia flicked the cigarette from her lips as a frown overtook her features. This was not exactly how she had pictured things going down. Tracking the apparition hadn't exactly been easy -- felt like a cat and mouse game, actually. Still, the fact that it had kept out of trouble had made an already difficult job less stressful.
Until now.
Into the lobby she went, skidding to a stop upon witnessing the ongoing scene before her. With her senses pinging all over the place it didn't really take long to conclude that the shade had decided to manifest itself in a room full of the Wise. Not exactly smart. Her eyes then flicked over to the scared receptionist. A sleeper. Perfect.
Val ran over to where the woman was, grabbing her by the arm. "You have to get out of here. NOW." It would be no good to have a sleeper present in this mess. Later, though, she would be tracked down and... "relieved" of what she saw here today.

The invisible wave of force ripples from Cody's hand, streaking towards the strange entity. Even as it audibly smacks into its form, the threads that make up the spell are pulled towards the phasm. Cody can feel the tug as though it were connected to his spine, but manages to sever the link by force of will.
Alyssa's bullet strikes true, rending a fist-sized chunk from the head of that portion that still looks like a man. From the wound sprout a hundred wriggling villi, each the form of its greater tentacles in miniature.
Seizing his chance to limit the potential of such a horror, Anshar pours strength into the fraying threads of reality that surround the phasm's nightmare form. The weave shimmers in his Mage sight, threads reweaving fractally down into the infinite as only the Tapestry can do.
Shi and Sam launch into their own assault, but the force of their attacks is blunted at the point of contact, the heavy weave and the void it borders reacting to create a tangible barrier.
The receptionist, a Jillian by her name tag, offers little resistance as Valencia pulls her away from the fray, her uncomprehending eyes wide with terror.
Gathering its tendrils, the phasm recoils from the assault for but a moment before lashing out once more. As the closest attacker, Shi finds herself handling the brunt of its attack. A dozen rapid tentacle strikes seems to deal little damage, the enveloping field apparently working both ways.
As it flurries Shi, the phasm pulses with non-light, and the hardened edge of Tapestry begins to slide into its nothingness like a slow-motion landslide.

Having seen the reduction in mobility his prior spell produced, Anshar is going to attempt something a bit fancier. Instead of just fixing the problem, he is going to tangle the creature in it. This is similar to the resonance reinforcement of Shut the Window of Heaven, but is focused around the limbs of the beast. The goal is to reduce not only its freedom of movement but its freedom of action.
This spell functions as a grapple against creatures capable of being contained by reinforced resonance. While the beast may be sufficiently strong to break the hold, it will spend its time doing so instead of hurting anyone else. Also, this will hopefully not protect it, as the spell is avoiding the center of mass where everyone should be aiming for.

"It would seem that a charismatic leader has revealed himself before us!" Alyssa joked, suppressing a light giggle as she reassessed the situation with careful eyes. What 'guru' was suggestion, however, was certainly not a poor choice of ideas; she had implicitly trusted the boy when she introduced herself with her real name, and there was no reason to reconsider that notion. After all, what is life if you could not have a little faith once in a while?
Her umbrella, however, was already pointed at the monster. The last attack still left a bit of a sting in her right shoulder - carbines, as one quickly learns, are not the easiest thing to fire for a delicate girl - although she still managed to aim the nozzle at her target. The second attack throw her off her feet a little; she staggered backwards until she was stopped by the wall behind her, although the bullet - however narrow it was - at least seemed to connect.
She did not need to say anything more; instead, the girl unzipped in inner pocket of her jacket and slowly revealed the tail end of a custom chrome-plated pistol. If Shi does decide to follow the great guru's advice...well, she knows who to call for an extra firearm.

The shimmering field surrounding the phasm vanishes, to be replaced seconds later by a series of glittering threads looped around its many limbs. Visible only with Mage sight, the threads are fractally deep weavings of Tapestry.
Shi pulls back under cover of darkness, as the others lay down additional firepower. The phasm shudders under the impacts as parts of its form are ripped away.
Sagging against the bands of reality, the void-thing begins to evaporate, exposing the bullet-riddled flesh of a man underneath.

For my 4 success space mage sight see post 42 in OOC. I should have had time to put into play while Ansh was chatting up Alyssa. As my incognito spell shattered, I'm back down to 2 spells.
I'm preparing to scry and follow through to the other end of the portal, but I'm building a connection through it first using New Threads 237. My goal is to take advantage of the remnants of the original caster's sympathetic tunnel, connecting myself better to the far end by directly casting on this end.
I'm not exactly sure how that is supposed to work, as follow through explicitly says it can be used to follow unknown portals, but also that it suffers sympathetic penalties as scrying (pg 114 where unknown simply cannot be done). I'm sure being in the presence of one end helps, but clearly doesn't remove the chart entirely.
Anyway, this turn I'm chanting in high speech about the connections between things to improve my spell next turn, which may be new threads or multispatial perception, or some custom scrying thing that can more easily follow through the closed portal... depending on what you think would be best to lead with.

Alyssa was not looking at the man's corpse when the magic around him unraveled. It wasn't quite that she was afraid of seeing the mess of a cadaver that they had left; there were much worse things that one can witness than the loss of one life. Rather, that exact scene would have reminded her of something - some figment of memory that she was not too fond of, and that she didn't really care to recall. She had thought about reconfiguring the floor - maybe creating a bit of a hole in the middle where the group could dump the body; however, if Janessa was going to send in a cleanup crew like 'guru' had promised, it would only make their job that much more difficult.
To this end, the girl had grown eerily silent as the group discussed their exit strategy. She simply took the pistol that Shi had handed to her without saying another word - no quips or jokes. The only expression she had made was that same kind smile that she had always worn on her face. It was not until the group began to discuss transport that she finally began to speak - this time, in a timid but otherwise expressionless voice:
"If I recall, however, a normal taxi is only able to seat four people, unless if we can somehow fit someone into the trunk." She shot an expressionless glare at Valencia now, then continued, "if 'guru' was planning a trap for us, the address and phone number that he had given us would similarly have led us to a dangerous situation. I think it would be more prudent if we split into two groups of three and trust 'guru' this time."
"It's not a bad thing to begin a partnership with a little bit of trust sometimes," she smiled; she adjusted her hat a bit so that the visor is pointing just a bit to the right, and turned towards the other man. "I'm not really a trunk person, so I am willing to volunteer taking the risk. It would not hurt to find out a bit more about our client, the mission, or get to know the person that I assume we'll be working with. That's my opinion on this, at least."

As the thoughts wandered around in her head, she dismissed most of the spells that she maintained on herself and breathed a sigh of relief - it felt, at that moment, as if a significant burden had been lifted from her shoulders, and that she could once again act normally without constantly constraining her breath. Then, stuffing the rifle and umbrella into her bag, Alyssa approached the 'guru' - now obviously outside of his comfort zone - before continuing with her address: "-Sam and our 'dear chaperone' will take the taxi route. That should result in maximizing the use of car space between our group."
"It's nice to meet you, Mr. Guru. As I've introduced myself before, please call me Alyssa. Shi and I will be in your care until we reach our meeting place. Please treat us well. Oh, right - since I made up a nickname for you, please feel free to return the favor if you wish to."

As for its antiquity, that is more of a joke. Enki was a god of magic and renewal. Per ancient ritual magic, to name a god was to invoke them. Therefore, by going by that name, Enki is invoked whenever people address me with a certain formality."

"It does seem like we've been together quite a bit lately." Alyssa surveyed her surroundings briefly as she followed Guru to his van. Her arms moved slightly, repositioning Shi's hug so that her arm wrapped only around her neck rather than touching the upper part of her shoulders; this was done only on reflex, and her posture stiffened just slightly at this. It was only after a few seconds before she remembered that she was wearing a layer of leather and started to relax.
To a casual observer, all of this would seem like just a normal jerk movement at being surprised at best. Alyssa immediately followed the guru's reply with her own, seeming slightly disappointed with herself for some unspecified reason. Nonetheless, she still spoke without a hint of this in her voice; her voice was still the same gentle voice that she was always used that that same, never-fading smile.
"I see. The God of renewal..." The girl was already fiddling with her Android and reading the relevant article online. "Considered the master shaper of the world. Confined the god Abzu and took over his functions, including being the god of magic, saltwater, and se...um, ookay, no more wiki-ing Ancient Babylonian deities. Sorry about that."
"I guess the closest I have to a shadow name is 'Lily'. I was supposed to be re-Christened to that after my initiation, although I absolutely hated it and couldn't really bear the symbolism that my mentor had intended when she picked it out for me. Alyssa is not my real name, either, but everyone that knows me, including my non-mage friends, call me by that. Asian names can be a bit of a devil to pronounce."
"But I don't want to ramble too much about myself," she added, intermittently pausing between her words now to give Guru a chance to speak. "I just thought it would be nice if we could know a bit more about you as we may be working together on this case. Maybe a bit about Lady Janissa as well; it would be bad if I inadvertently said something that would offend her on our first meeting."

"That was not what I had meant, although I guess we've concluded that Alyssa will do. Let's talk about something else."
She didn't go with the guru for small-talk or to muse on her name; the girl had originally wanted to use this opportunity to discover a bit more - both about him and the client - and his penchant for being mysterious was, to say the least, a bit frustrating for a first social contact. Still, there was something about him that felt trustworthy and sincere. She couldn't quite place a pin on the exact quality that supported this, although the boy didn't seem to be an enemy.
She had wanted to leave Shi out of the mess on the off-chance that she was walking right into a trap, although there was no denying that her presence was a reassurance of safety for Alyssa. The girl sighed lightly as she climbed into the front seat of the van, just slightly nudging away from the katana-wielding girl's embrace before turning back to Guru.
"I think I've been to New Orleans once, though I didn't really remember much from back then." The ice between them was getting somewhat cold now, and she was struggling a bit to maintain a social atmosphere. "It was just for a routine college campus tour that Tulane University was hosting. She imagined that this was likely the case of many mages trying to immerse themselves in this alternate world.
"I guess there are some mentors that are that way with their apprentices. My mentor was much more passive with me in comparison, I think; I never really considered how lucky I am until now. So, did you just spend your day study for your classes and magic when you were attending UNO then? I'd imagine that you've immersed yourself in this world and studied it for far longer than I have, as you definitely to know a lot more about the Pentacle and the mage world in general than most of my cabal, especially me."

"We all have our different styles, I guess," Alyssa smiled, looking briefly at her companion before returning to the sights just outside the vehicle. The midsummer sun in New Orleans was much brighter than the one she had remembered, eclipsing the city's ancient buildings to a few dim figments lining the street. The city, too, was distinctly colorful; she was rather entertained by the French words on almost every shop - in both spirit and liveliness, this early-morning, empty picture of New Orleans was to the liveliest cross-section of her New York as a peacock to a crow.
There was a single building that briefly caught her attention as it came into view of the van. It was an old brick building of about fifty years, and possibly the only house whose age clearly showed through obvious flaws in its restoration. A fence of plain wooden planks adorned the second floor patio alongside a few dusty tables. "La Petite Boulangerie", as it was named by a faded wooden sign. "So, these types of places exist no matter where you go," she thought to herself; her eyes scanned the premises of this peculiar building, seemingly looking for something hidden amidst the illusion.
It was only when the building disappeared from her view that she finally, with a sign, turned back to the guru.
"Ah, so you do make friends at your university. Say, what kinds of things did you like to do when you're with friends? Maybe we could find something you and I, or you and Shi, could share common interest in."

People are disappearing. No one says the word being killed, but that is what everyone assumes. Fat Tuesday is coming and there is a lot of more than natural... difficulties involved with that. This city is very old and the accumulated spirits alone would make this a very stressful time.

She glanced out of her side window with a bit of an inquisitive look about her, her hands pressed softly against her lips in a "Thinking Man" type of position.
"You still have not answered the question, though," she declared simply; she did not add a single filler word or phrase this time, nor did she really turn toward the boy when she spoke these words. "Well, whatever. Let me ask a different question, if you do not mind - were there any other than Ms. Seagull's contacts that have been disappearing around the city?"
She didn't really say anything else; instead, she became silent and waited for the guru to respond, continuing to absorb the sights and scenery of the Cajun city in the meantime.

The two vehicles pull out of the motel parking lot just as a white Ford Aerostar van pulls in. A trio of figures step out and immediately begin working magics on the scene and the frightened receptionist. They are quickly lost to view as the team turns down a side-street.
The early-morning sun is already pouring heat down onto the city, dispelling the light fog that veiled its features. The mixture of old and new architecture is a familiar sight to the New Yorkers, even if the styles and sizes are quite different than home. However, it doesn't take long for the scenery to shift as the cars head south to the swampy French Quarter.
Here buildings have a heavy aura of history, and even a feeling of life to them, as if they were square-shouldered old men silently watching the intruders pass. Their stony facades betray no hint of welcome or warmth, despite the humid air hanging like a blanket over their domain.
It doesn't take long to arrive at the restaurant, a ramshackle building made of old sheet metal and brick in equal measure. A hand-painted sign proclaims the place to be Mama Bikka's Crockpot, though the "r" is particularly faded. A heady scent of cooking meat and exotic spices wafts from its propped-open doors, and the sounds of laughter and light conversation can be heard from the dirt parking lot.
As the team exits their cars and approaches the entrance, the shimmering edges of a Space ward are visible to their collective Mage Sights. Evidently it isn't set to exclude them, as they step into the dimly lit dining room.
The interior is slightly dingy, but looks clean enough to eat in. The walls are absolutely covered in posters, mounted animal heads (including two crocodiles labeled "Mama" and "Papa"), and musical paraphernalia. A series of round wooden tables and chairs are strewn pretty much randomly about the room, though only three are occupied at the moment.
As you enter, a tall dark-skinned woman stands and greets you with a smile. "Welcome, children! I'm Janessa, and thank you for meeting me so early! Come, sit, eat, so we may properly meet like friends." Her voice carries a bassy, almost-Jamaican accent, underscoring her warm demeanor.
She is dressed in a long peasant skirt and t-shirt, both in a mix of earthen tones. Her hair is in dreadlocks run through with beads and a few feathers, lending hippy tone to her look. As you sit down she waves over a young girl, who brings steaming bowls of soup and iced teas for everyone.
After introductions, she looks around the table and says "So I hear you had some excitement already this morning? I would like to know what happened, and of course apologize for our lapse in security. We have been quite distracted as of late."

Cody takes his seat and accepts his bowl of soup, A little early for soup, but I am hungry. Waiting until everyone is served before he begins eating, Cody will take the few moments to and discretely split his attention between Janessa and the surrounding room (looking for the various exits and anything that looks interesting or out of place in the establishment... always his Private Investigation background at work).
Once everyone is served, Cody will begin eating his soup, while listening to the others speak and describe the scene. Unless directly addressed he doesn't immediately offer up any comments himself, leaving that to the younger rasher cabal members.

Anshar, Enki, or whomever the blind mage was trying not to be at this particular moment moved to the darkest spot in the room and did a decent impression of the chair he was sitting in. It wasn't in a corner as might be expected, but along one of the walls between two windows.
His face was expressionless, but anyone skilled at reading auras, as many people in this room were, would have noticed a definite strain of envy hanging over him.

Acting a bit contrary to her earlier behavior, Alyssa grew silent as the party entered the old restaurant. The establishment was certainly cheerful despite its appearance - as would be expected of any traditional gathering area with its own host of loyal patrons, but something about this ambiance killed off any of her prior mood for conversation. Janissa, too, contributed to this gloomy atmosphere - there was often a significant difference between the demeanor of an experienced mage and a younger, more impulsive one. While a number of the young mages that she had met in the Mysterium are idealists, sociable and eager for new experiences and new knowledge, pangs of experience and age often dulls this sense of personality and reforges this potential, like steel to a machine of a singular purpose, into a drone devoted solely to a single persuasion. It's as if their side of the pentacle had taken over their life in its entirety, making them, well...
Alyssa shot a brief glance at 'the guru', then quickly returning her focus to the remainder of the room. There was something else she did not like about the area, although it was a part of herself that she would not admit to anyone - not even to her cabal-mates - for fear that they would think much less of her. There were a number of things about her life that she would not not explicitly speak about, come to think of it; her eyes individually fell on the countenances and expressions of each member of her cabal, finally resting upon that of Cody 'the chaperone'. On occasion, she had briefly wondered what kinds of secrets they had kept amidst the deepest confines of their minds; it took her just as little time to dismiss such unproductive thoughts. It's no use worrying over such things in place of her own insipid nightmares.
She tried to make note of how many people are around her before the space magic began to weave itself, making some final uses of her 'Sense Life' spell before she would be forced to dismiss it. When everything was committed to memory, the spell had already faded into the aether; in its place, she had simultaneously utilized and dispelled a number of magicks, although all of them silently as to avoid drawing too much attention to herself. Her eyes, too, wondered about the room as she sat in perfect silence with her unfading and gentle smile, carefully surveying her surroundings guided by her magical prowess.
The soup, too, sat untouched before her. Every so often her eyes would wonder onto the form of Cody, nonchalantly curious at his health at every given moment. It was a silly though, yes, but it offered a subtle distraction as the girl's attention wandered between the restaurant and the conversation at hand.

Janessa frowns at Sam's description, her brow furrowed in thought. "I know of nothing like that, though it sounds most horrible. Your description, however, matches what we've found at the sites of those disturbances you were called to help with." She pauses, taking a slow spoonful of her soup.
"I will have my protege look into the matter. He can grant you access to my library, should you find its tomes helpful, though I doubt they hold record of a monster such as this. I will tell you what I know, and hope you all can bring this matter to a happy conclusion."
Leaning back in her creaky wooden chair, she continues. "Each disturbance so far has been connected with damage to the surrounding Tapestry. Physical evidence of a fight was present, but no lingering magics, which makes sense if this thing was indeed some sort of 'magic-eater.' In any case, there was no trace of the victim, not even blood."
"Until this morning, only sleepers have been targeted, mine and my cabalmates' allies mostly. If these things are beginning to target Mages, it must be that they are either desperate or growing more confident. Sadly, I suspect the latter.". She reaches into her purse and retrieves a stack of papers.
"These are the approximate times and locations of the disappearances, and the information of those who went missing. Is there anything else you might need from me?"

Janessa spreads her hands wide, an apologetic look on her face. "Any number of mages know or could easily know our allies, they did not work only for us. It took several weeks and too many losses before even I realized the connection. At first we thought it was a campaign against the Concilium as a whole."
"As for the second question, I must confess that I do not know. Though, if these things truly are eaters of magic, I don't know why they would attack the mundane, who would offer them no sustenance." She pauses for a moment, thinking.
"There is perhaps one who could help. Our Guardians have a man who knows much about the unmaking of magics, and the destruction of even powerful artifacts and wards. I shall secure a meeting with him, if you so desire."

When Sam places her hand on the papers, Cody has a moment of unjustified territoriality. Calm down, you will have a chance to review them soon enough. "Please pardon me," Alyssa cut in, her voice humming softly at first to ensure that she was not intruding excessively upon the conversation. The atmosphere in the bar still felt a bit impressive, although the girl was growing quite curious now. Her posture straightened a bit; her face was still locked in her signature casual smile; the girl was, by chance, sitting across from Janessa, although for the first time that day her unusual beauty seemed to shine as a diamond among sheets of graphite. "But when you said 'mine and my cabalmates' allies mostly', that means that there are other victims of these attacks as well. Do you know if there are any connections between the victims that are not connected with you cabal or your allies? Like if they hold regular contact with some other, smaller cabal somewhere in New Orleans?"
She looked down at the food for a moment. Her hand moved to stir it as if to distract herself from the thought, although she made no attempts to eat either the soup or bread. If anyone asks, she would reply - ever so cheerfully - that she had already eaten earlier in the morning and that she was on a diet. There were other reasons that she would not touch the food, of course, although she would rather not get into those silly matters.
"I'm wondering about the man, too - the one that was wrapped in all that magical energy earlier and is now dead. Have you had the opportunity to identify his corpse, or any other information that may or may not connect him to this incident?"

Janessa nods and brings out a cell phone, dialing what is clearly a speed-dial number. "Hi Marten, it's Jan. Yes, at Mama's. Ok."
As she hangs up, a man steps out of the previously empty bathroom. Tall, white, and very scruffy, he is clad in ragged jeans, an old army jacket with no shirt on underneath, and what appears to be sandals made out of wood and rope.
He casually makes his way to the table and pulls out a seat next to Janessa. "Evening, folks. My name's Martinet, what can I do you for?" He speaks with a slow southern drawl, much more pronounced than Jan's accent. As he leans back in his chair a small metal pin on his belt becomes visible, in the form of the Guardians of the Veil iron mask symbol.
Janessa sighs. "These are our guests, Martin. It would be nice if we could keep the appearance of class in front of them." He grins, but says nothing to this. "Anyway, to answer your other questions first: I would hope that Enki was not their target, but in any case we do not have many Sleeper allies left. What we do have are families. You understand that we are rather motivated to deal with this before they become involved."
Turning to Alyssa, she continues. "The other three victims aren't connected to us, at least not directly. I assumed they were related to our other allies in some way, perhaps professionally. To be honest, we've been so busy trying to defend our own and prepare for Mardi Gras at the same time that we just haven't been able to investigate them. I do know that they lived fairly near the locations of the other attacks, down south of here. Perhaps they will be the key you need to unravel this mess, though I do not have much hope for such a swift or easy resolution.
The report on the corpse should be in soon. I'll have it forwarded if you have already left by then. In any case, feel free to speak with Martin here, I must use the facilities."
As she rises and heads to the bathrooms, Martin sticks his tongue out at her back, then turns back and winks at the group. "So, what's the word, lovely ladies and assorted gents?"

Only for those who can see/speak with the dead:
The ghost in the kitchen chuckles lightly, the motion causing cracks to open up in the burn scars of his face which ooze ectoplasm. "Ma'am, that's a tale so old I'm sure you wouldn't be interested. Nobody here even remembers the grease fire, or this place's old name, so they surely don't remember me." He scratches at his chest, disturbing the old-fashioned white suit pocked with burn marks that he wears. "Honestly, I'm more interested in what y'all are doing here. You're certainly not regulars, and unless I miss my guess you're from way up north." He smiles slightly, and the crack at the end of his mouth splits down his neck to the collar bone.
Marten nods at Cody's first question, and smiles at his second. "Well first thing's first, this thing you ran into doesn't sound like proper magic. Yes, it were likely bound by such, but even I never heard of magic that could eat magic. I'd say something were summoned and bound to the poor bastard, and set loose." Marten frowns as he drinks the coffee just brought over by the waitress.
"Obviously it'd be more helpful if I could lay hands on one of these beasts, but for right now I'd suggest you use indirect methods. Kinetic pushes, living shadows, plants and such. If it eats pure magic, starve the bastard." He grins at this.

I tried talking to his two 'friends' there, but they didn't say much." He gestures to his mouth. "We're I a betting ghost, I'd say he canceled their subscription to 'Being Alive' and they resent him for it. Couldn't guess how he shut them up though."
Marten leans forward, elbows resting on the table. "Call it whatever you like, but it fits more with the Abyssal side of cosmology in my opinion. As for the timing, I'd bet my ass on it. Our fate weavers're busy keeping the riots from getting nasty, our Spiritualists and Mentalists are working to keep antsy spirits out of the public eye, and me an mine are running about fixing things when everyone else flubs the job. It's when I'd attack, that's for sure."
He reaches behind him, and with a momentary swell of Space magic he pulls out a manila folder. "This's my results so far. I'm guessing the bastards are hiding out in the swamps down south, but its werewolf territory so checking it out's a bit prickly. If you do go down there, be careful. They don't distinguish between visitors and natives, and I don't want a war with the furries."

It was never her intention to continue the conversation after her singular question was asked, and even as Samantha sent telepathic topics of interest to her, she simply replied with a faint laugh and remained silent for the remainder of the conversation.
Now, however, the girl seemed to be back within her element. Her food still untouched on her table, Alyssa had already approached Sam, looking briefly over her shoulders for anything of interest contained within those documents. Mainly to satisfy her own curiosity - although she could do it, per se, Sam and Cody were her superior in investigative work than she ever had the talent for. She would ask them later about what they had learned, of course, but for now it was prudent to leave them to their studies. Instead, her eyes scanned the newcomer and - perhaps instinctively - held out a friendly hand.
"It's a pleasure to work with you, Willliam," she smiled. To any outsider, her smile was simply a warm one - an ingenue's smile upon an unnaturally beautiful face, seemingly greeting her target with a sense of purity and naivete. It's a habit that she had picked up in her late high school years - although most people would not admit such a bias, many would much rather speak their heart to a pretty, innocent girl than if she had played the part of a stoic. "Um...wait, let me guess; would you be a disciple of fate and mind magic? You have the appearance of an enchanter, I think."
It was a blatant shot in the dark, and really, an extremely indirect way for her to ask about the man's specialty in the arts.

"I still feel that motive is our primary problem here." Enki said from off to the side.
" Additionally, I think it likely that Mardi Gras is not related except as a distraction. If we can discover what it is they are trying to accomplish then the events will resolve themselves into a more useful pattern.
Finally, given what we have seen, summoning seems to be a likely component of our targets' operations. Given their apparent skill in manipulation of cosmological barriers, the answer may be found outside this world."
What roll would be relevant to consult my cosmological knowledge for something like this?

"An interesting theory, but a failed one... I'm not seeing absolutely anything that would imply whoever is doing this is attempting to draw power from the deaths... On the other hand, I'm almost certain that whatever this is is being done by way of sympathetic magic."
He flips through a few of the pictures and points out missing articles of clothing and other small, personal items.
"And no, my initiation was as one of the Obrimos, my education furthered by the Mysterium."
He flicks through the photos one more time, then curses softly.
"I agree, motive could be the key to all this... But, um.... I don't have any experience with the beyond. Other than mundane reading, of course. Do any of you know more about harnessing or calling those kinds of powers?"

After listening to those around him talk, Cody will raise his head up from the papers. I agree, it is too early to make calls on motive, first we need a profile of our suspect. We should consider all motives possible at the moment though. To Shi Cody will say, Anyone who tries that hard to be likable always makes me suspicious, but killing someone recently and hiding things doesn't mean he's guilty of anything we care about. Let's not forget that we just got done killing someone this morning. Cody will then drop the file in his hands back on to the stack and sit back raising his head to look at William, Obrimos Mysterium as well he will say as he indicates himself. "Indeed? Actually, I gathered a very extensive knowledge of the way the ancient and modern un-awakened harnessed magic. Rituals, summonings, visions, that sort of thing. After my awakening, it seemed I was a natural addition to the Mysterium's store of knowledge."
He shakes his head and paces the length of the tables, his staff thumping on the ground in time with his steps.
"Do any of you see anything else obvious? Or not so obvious, I suppose. Damn, damn, damn."
He turns and faces shi as he stops his pacing.

Finally giving up on any reasonable measure of social introduction, Alyssa leans wearily on a wall besides Sam and sighs loudly, before turning back to the pictures. To William, Well I look forward to long discussions, my hobby while still asleep was occultic research and investigation, most of which didn't involve the awakened.
To Everyone, Well I know where I need to start my investigation, it appears there is a witness to the first attack, but no documentation or statement from her, lets hope her memories weren't altered. Now obviously we all can't barge in on this witness so I recommend that I go and speak with her along with one other of us. In the meantime the remainder of us should try meeting with some of the 'clean up crew' and interview them first hand, perhaps there is something not documented that is worth knowing. Any objections?. Cody will wait for responses before continuing. Is anyone competent enough with Matter to make copies of these?, as Cody indicates all the files.

"It would be much easier to visit the local copier, don't you think?" Alyssa was, at this point, already used to being ignored; still, the suggestion of using matter magic to create copies of items is relatively daunting (and would be very taxing on the mage involved), while relatively simpler 'muggle' methods would be much more effective. "I'm sure Enki can point us to such a place, and creation magic would just be unnecessarily taxing on the mage. It would make your investigation much easier not having to deal with disappearing paper, as well."

Still, she had probably given him enough aneurisms for one day; instead of a quip as she may have done on a lighter day, she instead turns toward Shi and spoke in earnest:
"Even if Martin was behind all of this, would he actually wear so much evidence so close to him that a single mage sight would be able to rat him out? There are, no doubt, plenty of mages around Janissa that would keep such a spell active, so they probably would at least know about the spirits."

"Oh dear," the girl sighed. This was quite an awkward situation; Alyssa didn't really mind Cody's remarks when they were mainly targeted at herself, although it certainly seemed to have created quite a precarious situation with Shi. Still, it seems like she would be best staying here. Probably for the best, really, given that it would be a terrible thing to give Cody yet another chance to facepalm.
It was also a bit amusing to see him so friendly with Enki now despite his prior suspicion, but that is neither here nor there. There was, however, one more thing that she needed before the 'chaperone' boy was gone, and she very quickly called out to him: "Before you go, 'chaperone', let me see your camera for a moment."
The girl reached into her bag and pulled out a 20' USB cable, and pointed one of the ends at him. The other end was already attached to her laptop; on the screen, one could see a screencap of the Google map of New Orleans, with a few dots marked in the southern section and a solitary one at the site of a hotel.

"As you wish," Alyssa sighed; it was ultimately an expected outcome given the detective boy's state of mind at the moment. Still, there was no use arguing with Cody when his mind is set like this - and he's very trustworthy when it comes to official matters. "Make sure you don't forget it later on, 'chaperone' xiansheng*!" she continued, still wearing her standard smile. "Oh, right! I don't think I've ever told you my e-mail address. It's
[email protected]; make sure you don't forget!"
The girl watched as Cody and 'guru' left, then returned to the remaining members of her cabal. The two were now located before the aforementioned trap door in the kitchen, and although she arrived late, she was able to hear a few brief fragments of Shi's complaint. "Cody is Cody," she laughed; she did feel a bit bad about being amused at Cody's frustration. Still, it's human nature to laugh at another's misfortune - one of the many reasons why reality shows and America's Funniest Home Videos had such a broad audience.
"It's just a part of his personality, to think like a sleeper cop would of an investigation," she added, still smiling. "That's part of what makes him such a great detective, I think...though, really, I don't know if I really have a right to comment, with me being the shining queen of sleeper life and all that."
"Here, let me help with that," she added, moving her hands over the trap door, as if speaking to something within it.
Alyssa will be improvising the following spell - the intention is to open any locks that might be on the trap door and cause the doors to open by themselves. Since it's covert and has no mana cost, I can keep on trying until it works:
Control Object (Matter •• + Spirit •)

The kitchen staff gives you guys a few weird looks as you head back, but doesn't interfere. The trapdoor is under a black traction mat, and looks quite a bit older than the rest of the floor. About 2 feet square, and made of moldy ebony, it makes a slight *thunk* as Alyssa waves her hands over it. Opening easily, it reveals a short flight of wooden stairs down into a dingy basement.
The room is roughly dug out of the surrounding dirt, and lit by a single bare bulb from the ceiling. About 25 feet by 40, a row of cots line one wall. A refrigerator, sink, and microwave oven all appear to be in working order, and a small pantry of dry goods is cut into one wall. Several tables are in the room, and two large rows of books are on bookshelves hung from the ceiling.

Still being early, it doesn't take long to reach the address of the first incident. The plantation home is on the southern edge of town, overlooking a huge front yard complete with topiary animals and a winding driveway. An amateur guess would easily put just the house at over a million in value.
A pair of gardeners are working outside in the flower beds lining the front walk. The front porch extends all the way across the front of the house, and features a pair of tables and assorted chairs. The front doors stand open, and the smell of baking bread emanates from the inside.

Suzy looks a little dubious at Cody's offer. "Lets just keep it quick-like, I already told all I know anyhow. Suppose I can go through it again though, since y'all asked so nicely."
She takes a breath before relating the story. "So it were late, 'bout 1 or 2 in the AM. I had finished up all the chores, and just poured m'self a nightcap when I heard a funny sound. Like swirling air, sorta."
"Anyway, I went to take a look, and I saw a man dressed in the darkest black you ever seen, like the pitch of night itself. And he musta had some kind of ropes or some such on him, cause it was whipping around him in the dark. He was on the stairs, though the doors were closed and locked up proper. So I watched for a second, surprised as I was, as he went up the stairs all slowly. And dead quiet, too."
She frowns for a moment before continuing, choosing her words carefully. "Now the other staff don't believe me bout this part, and truth be told I don't rightly believe it myself. But it's what I saw, sure as day. That man walked straight into the young master's room, right through the closed door like it were air. That's when I screamed."
Sir burst outta his room in a flash, and kicked down the boy's door where I pointed to it in a second. I never seen him move like that, but his hackles were up and I don't blame him none for that. We ran in after him, but the dark man were gone along with the boy. Sir started swearing and hitting the empty bed, calling somebody a son of a bitch, though he didn't say who."
She shrugs. "After that, the cops came and took a report, and told me I was seeing things on account of the drink, even though I tole 'me it weren't but one I had. Then that young detective came and asked a bunch of strange questions, and that was that. He musta been pretty good to be detective so young, and his head shaved too. Maybe he's a cop's boy."
She looks at the two before her, waiting to see what they have to say. Her face suggests she doesn't expect it to be enjoyable.

Cody quickly takes notes, short hand when neccessary to keep up with the story, as he writes he will scribble in the margins the various Arcana/Rotes that immediately come to mind. When the story is finished Cody will quickly glance through the notes and make sure he has everything, before beginning to ask questions. Well her employer has got to be a supernatural, based on the woods I would guess a Mage. The immediate description sounds similar to what we faced this morning. We appreciate your statement Ms Moyers, if you wouldn't mind, and I promise to make it quick, I just have a couple questions for you.
((For the sake of consolidating the questioning I will post each question Cody intends to ask in the order he would ask them.))
Do you remember the name of that original young detective that took your first statement?
If the dark shrouded man walked silently, what caused your employer to burst through his door in the first place?
After the cops came, did your employer give them a statement? I didn't see one in the file.
The dark shrouded man, how was he moving, was it a casual walk or a sneaky thief-like manner or somethign else entirely?
When the boy was discovered to be missing, what was the emotional state of your employer? From your statement he was "Swearing and Hitting the Bed", which implies to me he was angry, did he seem terrified, sad, scared as well?
((More to follow after a few answers))

Do you remember the name of that original young detective that took your first statement?
"I don't rightly remember, it was something like Samuels, or Samson. Something with an 'S' to it."
If the dark shrouded man walked silently, what caused your employer to burst through his door in the first place?
"Most likely it were my screaming."
After the cops came, did your employer give them a statement? I didn't see one in the file.
"I imagine he did, though I didn't see it myself. Can't speak as to why you ain't got it though."
The dark shrouded man, how was he moving, was it a casual walk or a sneaky thief-like manner or somethign else entirely?
"Kinda stiff, like he were real sore or holdin' back a sick stomach."
When the boy was discovered to be missing, what was the emotional state of your employer? From your statement he was "Swearing and Hitting the Bed", which implies to me he was angry, did he seem terrified, sad, scared as well?
"Angry? Filled with righteous fury'd be a better term. Not so much scared, I'd say."

Sam noted the promising lead, but made not overt mention of it, in case it was an inside job and they had the workspace bugged in some stealthy manner.
She continued tracking down all interesting leads in the documents, jotting the more obvious down in small shorthand, and remembering the ones she thought more subtle only by the spaces left in her notes, and the context around them

"Just one. Is or was your employer a religious man? More precisely, is he involved with any, traditional activities. Not to suggest anything of course, but most kidnappers know the family and we would like to cover all our basses for how this person might have known your employer or his son."
