On their website, they told people not to use the mobile website until they could fix the problem.

In the name of SCIENCE I investigated. The mobile site got hacked. Says so boards. Randomly links you to scam play site.

Maybe you guys should have optimized the board's security.

Is it on their end or my end? So far it's happened both on my iPhone and my computer; the iPhone is not jailbroken.

When I try to go to those sites directly or from google, I am redirected to a porn site. It is just those two sites, nothing else redirects that I have noticed.

The only information I have been able to find about this redirect is from the sites themselves - which I can't access because when I click on the link I am redirected.

Not sure where to post this. Mods, please delete and put into the right category if I am incorrect.

Says temporarily unavailable when I try to go there.

Google results also shows the first bit of one of the pages as saying:
"News: WARNING:The mobile version of the site has been ..."

Not sure how to get it showing more, but I'm guessing they got hacked.

Hi, MMX mod here.

A little while ago, someone hacked the server data for BG and MMX so that mobile viewers would be redirected to porn. The owners (the Brilliant Gameologists) have been looking into it, and in the meantime we put up a warning.

For the last few hours, both sites have been displaying "The website you were trying to reach is temporarily unavailable" messages from Bluehost. This is linked to the BGs' attempts to fix things, but I'm afraid right now I don't have any information other than that.

Don't mean to sound paranoid, but this isn't the first time the website got hacked.

Is someone pursuing a vendetta against the site?

If it's just run-of-the-mill spammers, then Min-Max is in desperate need of some serious security upgrades.

Don't worry, Bhu, we're all in this together. I propose making Giant ITP our temporary refuge.

Spread the word to the Min-Max Boards diaspora!

Bhu

I say panic because I have tons of stuff there that isn't backed up :smalleek:

Bhu

They don't have the boards archived.

Libertad
2013-01-01, 12:48 AM
Huh, that it bad.

Altpersona was in the process of storing Brilliant Gameologist content on his hard drive. If any of your stuff was on that board, you can ask him for help.

I'm sure that Josh and Meg and the gang will start up a new site if Min-Max crashes, but if that doesn't happen I'd to retain a sense of community with all the guys from the boards. If there's some way to get in contact with them all, maybe even find a new home for Char Ops, I'd like to hear some ideas for appropriate locations. You think this site might serve as a good way station?

Bhu
2013-01-01, 12:50 AM
Is alt here? I only know him from the mm boards. I only know the vast majority of people there from that board. It would be like losing family :smallfrown:

Bhu, I have a suggestion.

Google Cache. It saved the Bleach D20 project (which recently lost its wiki), it'll save your project.

If you want, I can probably help out.

Jackalope
2013-01-01, 01:46 AM
So long as it's down because it's being fixed then I'm okay. (I'm Jackinthegreen over on MMX)

I wouldn't be surprised if some irrational smeghead had a vendetta against BG and/or MMX actually given some of the difficult people that have been kicked or otherwise absconded from the sites.

The site's not down for maintenance, or at least the page we're seeing there isn't indicating that. In fact, what we're seeing is a page that we were originally meant to be redirected to due to whatever hack has been perpetuated on MMB. The address bar mentions 'howsyourmuffin' .com as the 'disabled' site so I imagine that was taken down but the redirect is still in place on the MMB site.

I tried researching ways to bypass a website redirect but none of the info was helpful, and it seems we're stuck for the time being.

It's funny, too, because I checked the site last night and not a minute later did the redirect go into effect on all pages. Talk about timing. :smallsigh:

Maybe, though that seems to be mostly related to wordpress sites. Still, it could certainly be relevant.

Aren't the boards on bluehost?

VennDygrem
2013-01-01, 04:09 PM
They are, so it could be a server-wide hack. The thread you linked led me to believe it might be a vulnerability in wordpress rather than the server, though obviously there are several ways to hack a site like that. Mostly, it's the ease of the hacker/virus to add the bit of code that redirects visitors to the other sites. It might not even be a direct attack on MMX, just sites hosted on bluehost (in which I'd probably suggest someone either contact bluehost as this seems to be common on their servers, or switch hosting providers).

One could also go visit the Rule of Cool Forum (http://www.ruleofcool.com/smf/index.php). I believe they might be working on setting up a forum specifically for 3.5 discussion for the displaced MMX folks. You could ask in their IRC channel on Gamesurge (also linked to on the home page).

When it does I need to make sure I have a way of contacting people. I got tons of stuff I'm doing by request, and with the forums down I don't even know how to find some of the requestees.

This sucks ass. From the 31st onward i tried to find any and all information about it and came empty. Doesn't the site's admins have like, a twitter account or something they could use to maybe clarify the situation a bit, set up a contingency plan or generally just give some sort of announcement to the community?

It's been only a little over a year since the forums got a reset, it's a damn shame to see all that work go to waste all over again.

By the way... After the whole purge of the old boards, there isn't any backup system available? Is google cache our only hope? :(

Bhu
2013-01-02, 06:03 PM
Anyone heard any news?

Bhu
2013-01-03, 12:53 AM
Google cache seems to be stubbornly resisting some of my attempts to use it. So some of my stuff will likely be lost.

In other news it seems a lot of bluehost sites got the hack so maybe we were just bystanders.

Crap! I hope this gets fixed soon. I had a lot of my personal campaign preps there... (that'll teach me...)

I've got much of it printed off already, as I'll be using it soon, but some of it was done over the Christmas break, and was to be printed off in the coming weeks... :smallfrown:

Google cache is getting some of my stuff, but the newer things aren't there, and I have to remember thread titles to search for...

Need a little help signing up for the Rule of Cool forums. There was some kind of error when I tried to register, and I think it may have to do with one of the security questions.

It asks what the site is mainly about. I answered "Dungeons & Dragons" thought that probably isn't right.

I haven't posted it there, yet. I want to have it more finished so I don't have to edit 3 different handbooks to change anything.

Most of the old board can be accessed via Google Cache and related archives.

We're in the process of transferring stuff over to the Rule of Cool forums.

Checking in here since I can't seem to get my reg to work on RoC (maybe its just me being a nub gimp but couldn't answer their damn confirmation questions right). Going to wait until next week for an update on time frame of the site coming back up. If I don't hear anything I will search for a new home for my two PbP's I was running on MMX.

Nanshork, Venn, LB, Shadowhunter, McP, Arch; if you see this PM me an email and I will let you know where we are moving to. If I lose too many to the move I may have to start the games over *gasp*
