I just submitted "The Old Man of the Field".
This is my first attempt at a homebrew monster, and I am really unsure of how well I did. Please feel free to tear apart the mechanics of it.

It's interesting how popular the Fey type is. Is there something about harvest or autumn that brings to mind the fairy tales of old?

I posted my first monster in a competition!

*hides*

Anyway, to be serious, I think it feels a little too powerful, and I couldn't decide on the CR. Also, don't ask me why I decided on outsider as creature type. I just felt like there should be something other than fey, elemental, plant, animal and vermin related to the harvest.

Any criticism, good or bad, and suggestions on the CR will be greatly appreciated. Bashing will be reported. Thank you.

Okay...

I'd think it was supposed to go the to other chat thread, the one about the Halloween competition, but sure, why not...

By the way, checking other entries, my monster is just so poor and badly thought. And ripe with grammar mistakes. And vocabulary, too. I have no chance of winning. (What was I thinking, anyway? I am still a pixie.)

Bearofbadnews
2006-11-15, 05:48 AM
I've been shamefully afraid to comment on other folks creatures due to my really crummy grasp of mechanics (I've been playing for 12 years now...?). I'm going to recitify that now!

Reltzik's Bad Harvest:
I like the idea a lot. The stats are somewhat of a mystery to me, but seem reasonable. The thing I wondered about most from these guys is where they came from and how they are normally spread-- it seems to me that given their biology, either they can be summoned/created or they must be a remarkable new mutation. I say this because it would seem any farming community that encountered such a beast would soon learn to kill the heck out of it after the first few harvests were disasters. There just seems to be no place that this creature could live normally without being actively eradicated. Obviously evil/vengeful druids are likely suspects, but there are tons of possibilities (which is cool). Nothing wrong with the post as is, of course. I was just looking at the non-stat stuff and this struck me.
belboz's Ergotine:
I love these guys, they are classic fairy tale monsters. Insane faeries that infest grainfields. I will say this though-- for the longest time I thought these were pixie-sized. I think it may be the diminutive-sounding Ergotine? These appeal to me primarily as a possible character race, strangely enough --although that level adjustment is steep!.
The Demented One's Autumnal Seer:
First of all, the special abilities here are wonderful. The Kiss of Autumn and Form of Autumn abilities are especially spectacular in a cinematic way (something I wish D&D was more often). I'd also like to say that the plot hooks are pretty boss.
Khantalas' Gluttonous Plague:
Creepy, creepy, creepy. In direct response to your question, I suggest these possibilities--
1. They hail from a demi-plane of hunger?
2. They are made up of avaricious souls from one of the planar hells?
I have one question about these beasties. What do they look like, or at least what shape are they? Even if you decide no one knows their appearance, they are certainly a particular shape, and that might have an effect on something. If they are truly formless, you might make specific note of that. It would make those clicking noises they make much more mysterious.
LordOfNarf's Blight Cow:
I really really like this kind of monster. It implies an interesting relationship to other creatures in it's world, it is versatile, suggesting many different types of encounters. It also follows in a tradition of folk stories/legends in a way that grants it a particular resonance. How many fairy tales have the kindly old couple receive a magical gift of some sort which benefits them until some stipulation is violated, thus voiding or reversing the benefit? It is original while feeling "right". Also, cool plot hooks.

For all of you guys, my favorite thing is that these monsters are clearly attempting to break the "random encounter monster" mold. They all either have essential non-combat qualities or have life-cycles that intimately involve a community of beings. This is the sort of creature that suggests a whole adventure-- not just a single evening of gameplay (though some of these would be great for that too).

Interesting about the size. Do you think that medium size is a problem, or just that I should emphasize it more? The image I had of these critters was really about human-sized. Or maybe the problem's with the name...I'll keep thinking about that.

It's useful to hear that people would be interested in playing these as a player race; I'd actually been considering changing the LA to "-"; I won't now. But I do think a steep one is required. Between the immunities, plausible ability adjustments, permanent flight, and spell-like abilities (that's several 4th-level spells per day, and several 1st-level spells *at will*, in addition to huge numbers of spells/day at intermediate levels), I really wouldn't want a 1st-level Ergotine in much less than a 14th-level campaign, and I think giving up 5 HD is *still* fair, even at Level 14.

I'm sure you are right about the level adjustment, I just meant that it's a lot higher than most monster characters' that I've played before (I should try those more, I guess). I might mention a little more about the Ergotine ecology-- talking about them more in context is probably a good solution to the size perception (so far I'm the only one with the misconception, though).

Mostly a suggestion, though if you are going for a pure wintery creature just wait for next month.

I gave an example of a serious and silly holiday based creature on the first page that might give you an idea of what to go for.

Over on Wizards for example someone did a 'Hot Cocoa Dragon'. Those things could kill ya but are still holiday based.

Well, guess mine has more of a regional reference, then. Artificial snow displays aren't really necessary in countries with actual snow, after all........

And unless you use a different kind of water, it's completely harmless. Well, unless you break your neck from tripping in a puddle of that stuff.

Nope, must be something mostly water-based. So enchanted/poisoned/contaminated water can be used, as well as stuff like weak acids, weak beer or even fruit juice. But alchemist's fire doesn't really fall into that category too well, IMHO. It's the DM's call, though.

(V: Not too sure, but mine might have as well........)

First off, I'm surprised and very proud The Old Man of the Field was picked from such a well-constructed group of monsters.

Secondly, I posted my Winterchilde entry. I wanted to make a fantasy race of snowmen, but in the beginning I got really caught up in the idea of dead kids. Sorry, it happens.

Like last time, I am really unsure if this is balanced. Especially the Winterforged Hearts and the LA...? But also anything you see, I'd love to hear what people think.

EDIT:Shuyougospel, I hear you on the time zone thing.
And I am realizing this submission might have done better for the next contest...

Nope, must be something mostly water-based.

They count as water-based creatures for control water, right?

When cast on water elementals and other water-based creatures, this spell acts as a slow spell (Will negates). The spell has no effect on other creatures.

I have a whole bunch of ideas I'm not using, if anyone wants a little one-sentence nudge to get their imagination going.

Just posted the Coal Elf. It's pretty simple; I may try to make it weirder later. Or maybe not; perhaps I'll just go for sour and to the point.

Are they a bit rough for a CR1? They do strike me as a bit nastier than gnolls, although not really by that much. I could add a HD or two and make them CR2 if that would be more balanced. I do want them to be fairly low-level baddies, though.

Note that the optional CUTE designation is just for possible future use. If you're not interested in CUTE, please just ignore it...being 3-5 years old certainly isn't a *requirement* for facing these guys.

So I've posted the Herald of Yule, which is a bit less silly than is probably good for this contest, but fit with the whole Holiday theme rather than the Wintery theme.

First off, I'm surprised and very proud The Old Man of the Field was picked from such a well-constructed group of monsters.

Hey, it was a great monster! Stop being so humble.

And my monster wasn't really that good, in retrospect. It just looked cool.

Not knowing much about Christmas, I will now wait until January for the new competition. Maybe it'll be something fun.

Also, does its treasure take the form of shiny balls and string with which it decorates itself? :smallwink:

There we are, got my entry in finally... I don't remember making much of a comment on the Harvest Moon stuff but some definitely nifty entries there, can't even recall how I voted now though hehe :)

And Khantalas, don't be hard on yourself. We were all new to designing critters at one point; I was hideously chaotic in the way I developed stuff before, working up just the stats I needed to know and leaving the rest unfinished. Submitting here has helped me a lot in completing my designs so they become more than one-offs; it can surely do some good for your design skills too.

Anyhow, I now have the Cake Golem in for the contest, and nearly a week early! :)

And once more, there are a lot of quality entries from what I saw at a glance, so I'll have my work cut out for me picking my favourite not-mine creature :) I'm not sure whether to be grateful for the new creature designs or worried about my prospects

I think I might have to print off better than half that contest thread... Some great stuff in there. PGCoD, don't be worried if a first attempt isn't all you might hope; despite some mechanical flaws you've got a very nifty concept there, and from what I saw it's doing pretty well in voting too. Frankly, I don't think anyone has cause to be embarrassed by their submission here. I've used my Cake Golems in a live-test (my epic sage ported them in to save the level 8 party as a planned diversion at the gates to the orcish citadel) and I intend to shamelessly thieve other people's designs for my campaign too, as I can fit them. :)

Really enjoyable efforts all round, I must say

Regarding the voting, I sugest that in case of a draw, votes by the creator of an entry for their own creature are disregarded. I think its fair to vote for your own entry if you really thought it the best (thought about it, but at least a couple of the others appealed as much to me), but not for that vote to be deciding in case of draws. If one of the entries voted for by their creator is one vote ahead at the end, I think it should win.

Must the entries be harbingers of doom? Cause I have an idea about a benevolent winter-y creature.
Not neccessarily of doom. For instance, I once did a creature called a 'Snowey Dove', swarms of these frozen birds that go all about putting out fires by flapping their wings and producing freezing cold bursts of wind. Entire flocks would descend upon towns, covering it. They were only of animal intelligence though, and weren't 'out to get you', but they were a deadly plague nonetheless.

However, no, no benevolent wintery creatures (had a chance for that in Holly Jolly :smallwink:). This is for those that are, by purpose or design, trying to bring the Fimbulwinter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fimbulwinter) to the land, an event of norse myth that foretold the end of the world. The chill to end all chill.

Is it alright to post something that may be an adventure hook as well as a hack-stab-boom monster? I came up with something that I want to throw at a low-level party in a sparse mountain settlement, something they have to work around and appease if possible. But it could also be a killable obsticle for a mid-level party, I guess.

Hrrrmmmm... I started working on a unique called "Herald fo the End," then when I came by to give the rules a closer (ie - thorough) read, I noticed the "Bloosnjor" example and realized my critter is very similar in a lot of ways. In addition to possibly biting off more than I can chew by creating an epic level creature as my first homebrewed monster, I now need to do some reworking and, consequently, some re-balancing. Ugh. Stupid great minds thinking alike...

Also, if Frostburn rules are ignored because, say, I don't own the Frostburn book, would that negatively affect my chances?

Well, as I'm only to be one of the voters I don't have a clue.

And I actually came through with something. The Hawk is flying. Conceptually, it's unfortunately similar to the Duke of URL's, but by the time I saw his submission, I was too close to done to stop. I haven't read his full entry yet (wanted to finish mine first), but hopefully the execution of the concept is different enough to work. If it ends up similar, I freely admit that he did it first.

As this is my first attempt at serious homebrewing, I would love to get as much feedback as possible, especially since it's rather unusual mechanically and I wasn't sure how to make it all work within the rules. I'm still not entirely sure I succeeded. Also, the CR is a complete and total shot in the dark. I suspect this is one of those things that's either a cakewalk or a TPK waiting to happen, depending on how prepared the party is.

The name is a reference to the north wind that blows down across the great lakes, by the way.

Khantalas, as a nitpicker yourself, I figured this is something you would want to know about the Cryocerebellus entry - you shift between using "he" and "it" throughout most of the entry, in some cases being inconsistent even within the same paragraph.

Aside from that, it's a pretty awesome monster concept (that is not to say I find any flaws with the execution, either). I'm actually really impressed with all the submissions so far. So, back to work on my own and hopefully make it more challenge-worthy...

Athenodorus - Love your concept. My only critique right now is in how you formatted your ability description - the Summon swarm ability should be listed seperately from the quench flame. Also I think you need a caster level for the swarm ability.
The immolation should probably allow some sort of save, otherwise it's kinda tough for the CR.
Just my two cents. Feel free to critique my creation as well.

Just sent you a message with some critiques, Athens :smallcool:

Athenodorus - Love your concept. My only critique right now is in how you formatted your ability description - the Summon swarm ability should be listed seperately from the quench flame. No, it's good where it is, as the swarm coming out of the wood is part of the ability (and a rather eerie affect I must say).

Also I think you need a caster level for the swarm ability. Summon Swarm is the same no matter your character level. Could be epic and it'd do the exact same thing. Even its durations is only limited to your concentration.

The immolation should probably allow some sort of save, otherwise it's kinda tough for the CR.Its based off of a psionic power called Matter Agitation (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/psionicPowersGtoP.html#matter-agitation). It allows no save, though has a duration of 1 min/level. The immolation can be kept going indefinetely, but still requires concentration, and therefore line of sight to the affected.

However, this does bring up something I missed in my initial critique, as the power needs a range. Matter Agitation's is 'Close', so I'd give it a range somewhere around that.

Crap! I missed the deadline, and I had it done, too, just forgot to post it!

Well, here's my critter for people to look at, anyway:

***

The fey are ancient creatures, older than men or even elves, and more in tune with the heart of the world; they have their own lives in the secret, hidden places of the world—their own loves, their own feuds, and their own courts: the Seelie and the Unseelie. The Unseelie Court is far darker than the Seelie, but both are honorable in their own way, hard as it can be for mortals to understand.
The Shadow Court is a hidden affiliation, its members moving among the two Courts in secret, and it is ruled by the Queen of Air and Darkness, an ancient, powerful, and evil enchantress who seeks to advance her personal power and play the Seelie and Unseelie courts against each other—all the while attempting to extend her rule into the mortal realms.
The Princes of Air and Darkness are her servants in this endeavor: the mightiest warriors of the Shadow Court, with the coldest hearts, she has bound into her eternal service, to conquer the world outside the glades of the faerie. To this end, she has imbued them with the power of winter—they spread it where they go, and draw strength from it. There are perhaps a dozen such Princes, and they serve sometimes as their Queen’s long arms, sometimes as her bodyguards, sometimes as special agents; at other times, they are given leave to go where they please—but their pleasure is to cover the world in the winter that empowers them.

A Prince of Air and Darkness’ Winterblade is a slender sword forged of ice and moonlight and frost; it is so thin that the blade is nearly invisible when turned on its side, so light as to be almost ethereal, and so cold that it numbs the wounds it makes before they can be felt. All attacks made with a Winterblade are melee touch attacks, and it deals damage as appropriate for a +5 Unholy rapier of its size, plus an additional 2d6 frostburn damage. The Power Attack feat may not be used with a Winterblade.
If a Prince of Air and Darkness is slain, or at his mental command (for example, if he is defeated and his Winterblade is taken from him), the weapon melts, transforming into unholy water. The Prince must return to the Queen of Air and Darkness to receive another Winterblade from her if he wishes to replace it.

Any weapons a Prince of Air and Darkness wields are treated as Lawful and Evil for purposes of overcoming damage reduction.

Shivering Touch (Su): Whenever a Prince of Air and Darkness strikes an enemy with a melee attack, incredible cold numbs and slows them, dealing 1 point of Dexterity damage. Creatures who are immune to cold are immune to this damage.

Freezing Gaze (Su): A Prince of Air and Darkness’ eyes are cold blue flames that freeze the spark of life and the will to move. Each round, the Prince of Air and Darkness may target a creature as a swift action. The target must make a Will saving throw (DC 28) or be frozen in place, immobile, for one round. A frozen creature can only take purely mental actions, and loses shield and dexterity bonuses to Armor Class. Frozen creatures are allowed an additional saving throw if attacked, but this provides no immunity to the gaze.

Winter’s Breath (Su): A Prince of Air and Darkness has cold mist in his lungs instead of air; as a standard action, he may breathe forth an effect quivalent to a Freezing Fog spell (CL 16, DC 28), but must then wait 2d4 rounds before he can do so again.

Mantle of Winter (Su): A Prince of Air and Darkness is infused with winter, and bears it with him wherever he goes. However, the power he draws from the cold dissipates when the cold goes; it is rare for a Prince to venture out of a cold region, for he loses much of his personal power when he does so. The area for one mile around a Prince of Darkness is chilled, the air becoming a temperature band one step lower (see Frostburn, table 1-1, p.9).

Winter’s Might (Su): While in a temperature band of severe cold (see Frostburn, table 1-1, p.9), or colder, even if the temperature band has been altered magically (such as by the Prince’s Mantle of Winter ability), the Prince of Air and Darkness benefits from continuous Divine Power, Death Ward, and Magic Circle Against Good spells, at a caster level equal to his hit dice; these spells may be dispelled, but the Prince can regain them as a free action on his turn.

Unearthly Majesty (Ex): A Prince of Air and Darkness has an aura of glorious and terrible majesty that he wears like armor; it grants him a deflection bonus to Armor Class and a resistance bonus on saves equal to his Charisma bonus.

Dark Queen’s Knight (Su): A Prince of Air and Darkness is a warrior selected and magically enhanced by the Queen of Air and Darkness, ruler of the secret Shadow Court of the fey; darker even than the Unseelie Court, the Shadow Court is a secret thing, and its queen is as ancient and eerie and powerful as ever a faerie was. The Princes are her personal champions, and to that end, she has infused them with magical wardings. A Prince of Air and Darkness is always under the continuous effect of a Resist Energy (fire) spell and a Telepathic Bond spell linking him to his Queen, both at Caster Level 30. These may be dispelled; if they are, the Prince has to visit his Queen and have the spells placed upon him once again.

Ice Glide (Su): A Prince of Air and Darkness can glide through solid ice as easily as a fish swims through water. This leaves behind no tunnel or hole, nor does it create any ripple or other signs of its presence. A Move Ice and Snow (Fb) spell cast on an area containing a gliding Prince flings the Prince back 30 feet, stunning him for 1 round unless he succeeds on a DC 15 Fortitude save.

Unseelie Prince (Ex): A Prince of Air and Darkness is a literal prince of the Shadow Court; other fey know this, and treat him accordingly. An Unseelie Prince receives a +10 circumstance bonus on Diplomacy checks made against any Fey creature belonging to the Shadow Court, and a +10 circumstance bonus on Intimidate checks made against any fey.

Spells: A Prince of Air and Darkness casts arcane spells as a 16th-level Bard. (4/7/7/5/4/4/2 per day)

Typical spells known: (6/5/4/4/4/4/2 known; save DC 20 + spell level): 0 – Detect Magic, Ghost Sound, Know Direction, Mage Hand, Message, Stick (SpC); 1st – Expeditious Retreat, Disguise Self, Grease, Improvisation (SpC); 2nd – Animal Messenger, Whispering Wind, Detect Thoughts, Wave of Grief (SpC); 3rd – Slow, Glibness, Phantom Steed, See Invisibility; 4th – Greater Invisibility, Cure Critical Wounds, Freedom of Movement, Voice of the Dragon (SpC); 5th – Mislead, Mirage Arcana, Greater Dispel Magic, Wail of Doom (SpC); 6th – Dirge (SpC), Nixie’s Grace (SpC).
Additionally, add the following spells to any Prince of Air and Darkness’ Spells Known: 1st – Ice Skate (Frostburn), Obscuring Mist; 2nd – Darkness, Chill Metal, Flash Freeze (Fb); 3rd – Column of Ice (Fb), Binding Snow (Fb); 4th – Boreal Wind (Fb), Frostfell Slide (Fb); 5th – Wall of Ice, Commune With Nature; 6th – Conjure Ice Beast VI (Fb), Control Weather

Spell-Like Abilities:
At will – Snow Walk (Fb), Obscuring Snow (Fb), Snowsight (Fb), Ice Slick (Fb) (DC 21), Control Snow and Ice; 3/day – Gaseous Form, Frostfell Slide (Fb), Hibernal Healing (Fb); 1/day – Ice Rift (Fb)

I don't think you'll need to do that with this vote. Herald of the end seems to be running away with it. And I thought this one was better than my holiday golem. But I guess the voting this time around says the opposite, oh well.

That's not cheating, at least by my calculations.

I always try to vote for the entry that I honestly think is the best. So far, that hasn't been my entry (I do penalize my own entry a bit*), but that will not always be the case, probably.

If you enter this contest, you've tried to make the best creature you could given the restrictions. It is no wonder that someone would choose their own creation.

*Plus, I thought it was a public poll too, so that may have had an effect...:smalltongue:

EDIT: MechaKingGhidra, I think your Galuverant is a great entry. The "arctic waters" angle is a really good idea. It is especially interesting to compare to the "arctic winds" archetypes that others built off of. Like the beginnings an entirely new "evil cold" elemental set.

But.. but Baator rocks. Along with anything in it. Herald FTW.

No offense, bear. I voted for the Old Man person thingie. But Baator just rocks.

Hey, did anyone realize we have many undead, many elementals, two abberations, one magical beast and no fey (IIRC)?

What's this love of undead and winter, anyway?

And why is psionics so unloved?

Bearofbadnews
2007-01-28, 10:18 AM
Hey, I voted for the Herald too!
Wicked good writing in that entry.

I think the reasons for the monster types that people used come from both the theme (apocalyptic evil) and the realities of type traits. I seriously considered the fey type for my entry, but decided to make up a new subtype instead. Because Medium Undead (cold fey) is too many descriptors in my book.

EDIT:Honestly, I don't have the book, and I have never cared for psionics much (sorry!). In 2nd edition I always disliked the overlap between psionicists and spellcasters. "Why is psionics not another type of casting?", I thought. But then, I also don't appreciate the extreme overlap of bard/wizard/sorceror/cleric/druid/etc. spells for the same reason. I thought your entry did a very good job with them though. An apocalyptic psionic cold monster is another great angle.

I'd guess that winter is the only season people can immediately think of when it comes to association with undead (except maybe summer, but zombies only).

As for psionics, perhaps a bit (although unlikely a HUGE major contender) is because psionics is not understood by a fair percentage of people. I know that when I tried reading about it, my head began immediately cramping. Oh well, to each their own.

Dear Mr. With Lasers,

Nice monster. I really like fey courts, and an emphasis on the ancientness and alienness of fey creatures. So hats off.

I noticed you gave a detailed description of the monster's sword but not the monster itself. I know it's got some icy blue eyes, but that's all. Is this because all the Princes look different? Just wondering.

Lastly, I really like your signature, and not only because I like that song. Rather, it is comforting to find another in this world who both plays D&D and appreciates the hip vocal stylings of Colin Meloy's delightful rastabout rougues and rascally ruffians.

Then it wouldn't be very good. Ever seen I, Robot? Basically humanity was going to be ruled over with a literally iron fist to 'protect them from themselves.'

Sure, the robots would kill anyone who had a problem, and we'd have almost no freedoms, but hey, in the long run there would be less death and strife and everyone would be just fine. Thats pretty good in the long run, neh?

I was thinking something more along the lines of "kill Hitler as a baby".

Sometimes, you have to do something evil to undo more evil, or to do a lot of good. By D&D terms, you're still doing evil.
I'll PM you about the concept later.

Though it would be interesting to see one, no, this is only for new monsters. A template is just something you apply to an old monster.

Believe me, that's for the best. Epics give you cerebral pain. A lot of it. It eats up your power points, too.

Its the point when most rational players burn their charachter sheets and go back to level 1 because they realize that all the sheer LEET SHINY POWARZ aren't all they are made up to be, in experience, its about 25-30, after that, it the fighter gives up keeping track of his feats, and the reast of the party follows suit,

Yes.

Yes, it is.

They didn't seem to have a problem making good-aligned creatures in Holly Jolly. Got some really nice ones in there.

Khantalas

But that was a side-effect of the theme. It was possible to make an evil creature for example, the theme was quite neutral.

This, however, is about good and good alone. Anything else will be a side-effect of it.

Certainly the slowest contest to date. Is the 'good' theme really that difficult? :smallconfused:

Give it a little time yet... still almost 2 weeks to go. I've personally been focused on the PrC contest (ending 2/14) and I'm just starting to get around to thinking about the "Rivalry" contest (2/14) and this one (2/20). I'm having a hard time coming up with a good concept off the top of my head, though.

I actaully have about six separate ideas for this contest, I don't figure how good is so hard for people. I a mostly just too lazy to ge around to it, though I will do it eventually

I'm still kicking my idea around in my head and trying to think up a good name for it, as well as going over the rules for the ethereal plane again. Hopefully I'll get things together in time for the deadline, but real life has provided some roadblocks for me, as well.

Pretty much... it's almost too broad of a topic. Without a specific area to focus on, it makes it hard to start the old brain up.

At this point, I do have an idea. However, I'm going to have to think of how to represent it in terms of D&D mechanics.

I really like your concept - good creatures should be merciful and focus on converting the evil before trying to destroy them, it makes a lot of sense. I'm not good at critiquing crunch stuff, but I had immediate issues with your grammar.

The repenters of heironeos are lesser spirits who serve (surprise, surprise) Heironeos. They believe in purity and goodness. Each Repenter spends there existence hunting down major evil and trying to destroy it. Even in there death they keep fighting evil until there last second of existence. They however believe none are past a second chance at goodness, and will always try to convince those to change there ways rather than kill them. Those that will not change are forced to through the will of there god, and if this fails, as a last resort the being will be destroyes.

There are three different meanings of the word "there", each with its own spelling. Most of these should be spelled their. The first one should actually be its, since "Each" is singular and "their" is plural. Sorry to be nitpicky, but it is very distracting.

Essence of Sanctity should unshape necrocarnum soulmelds.

It also needs some way (that isn't brute force or nonlethal) to deal with those who would kill it.

Khantalas

But aren't all necrocarnum soulmelds, you know, possessing of an [evil] descriptor?

Right. But what you've got currently just supresses the effects. It should totally unshape them.

Khantalas

Oh. Right. Silly me.

And what do you mean needs some way to deal with those who would kill it? It has a diplomacy modifier of "very high". Isn't it enough?

Fax Celestis

Sure. But there are some cases where Diplomacy and nonlethal won't work (an unintelligent regenerating evil creature, for instance).

I posted a monster in the thread. Not sure if it needs anything else done to it. The CR was a bit of a random guess but it's complicated.

I wanted to make a good creature that was differant so I chose a type I didnt' think anyone else would use. I'm still not sure it was a good idea.

And I'm the only entry with a Divine Rank. Booyah.

That's probably a good thing. The creatures interesting but the idea of Khantalas' monstrocity drawing its already over the top power from yet another book is terrorfying.

Constructs work well for good and there aren't enough in the books. That's probably why people are making them.

Doesn't Divine Rank 0 essentially just give you a few energy resistances? Or is counting as a diety dispite having no real power really that much of a boon?

Fax Celestis
2007-02-19, 03:38 PM
Divine rank 0 gives immunity to transmutation, mind-affecting effects, and some energy resistances, among other things. It's worth about a +4 LA, really.

Khantalas
2007-02-19, 03:42 PM
It also gives you maximum hit points per hit die, if I recall.

Fax Celestis
2007-02-19, 03:55 PM
Let's see. Full list of benefits for DivR 0: max hp per die; increased speed; deflection AC equal to Cha mod; attacks are aligned according to your alignment; immunities (transmutation, ability drain, ability damage, energy drain, mind affecting effects); DR 10/epic; Fire resist 5 ; SR 32; domain spells at will; and cannot die from old age.

Khantalas

Oh crap, I just saw the contest.

Do you think I can learn how to balance stats and challenge ratings before the day's over? Most of my forays into monster making have been rather lopsided(I get ideas for creatures, but it's the execution that always trips me up).

Monster Manual 3.5 should have everything necessary, right?

I just so happen to have none of those. I know, I know, I'm a luddite.

Thanks though. I'm scouring my books now and I'm going to throw something together. I have the idea and visual in my head, but I need to apply the rules to it real quick.

It's kind of a specialized creature though, not as versatile as most of the others for its (probable) challenge rating.

Ouch...

Well, since apparently the 3.5 Monster Manual is one of my two books I can't seem to find(although I've somehow got MMs 2-4 and even the damn Fiend Folio in front of me), I need to ask:

Is the updated d20 SRD doable as a fill-in? There aren't any glaring errors between it and the 3.5 MM, right?
