View Full Version : To Have Something More than Raw Power [Warlock PRC/And others Later. PEACH]

Erik Vale
2013-01-15, 06:08 AM
Ok, as an event of Part boredom, seeing so many warlock fixes, being about to play a few warlock character, and a desire to do something from a while ago, here come a small cluster of Warlock PRC/Warlock Based Classes designed around the idea of a Warlock that figured out Raw Power is worse than Adaptability. Probably because he partied or fought a Psion, Wizard or .

First, will be a DnD 3.5 PRC. For those that are interested, I will be drawing some inspiration from the Invoker (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=153863), Warlock Archetypes (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=254190), and the Eldritch Paragon (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=13647601&postcount=163).

But yes, again, for all concerned, this is looking to be a couple of PRC's and Warlocks designed about producing a Wizlock. Hopefully without completely overshadowing the party wizard.

Now for the first course.

Eldritch Scholar
[I]‘Well. It was only a matter of time until one was born that had enough brains to realise they were weaker than their potential, as well as enough force of will to make something of it.’
Mal'Ana'Nan Kelveoch, Cerebromancer.

Background: Eldritch Scholar arise from a small pool of warlocks, being individuals who have realised that the pact that bound them or the source that fuels them wasn't enough, and had both the luck, brute force of will and intelligence, to make something of it.
Races: Any of the more intelligent and wilful species that become warlocks would be more than happy and able to become Eldritch Scholar's. However those that work towards unlocking their bloodlines to become something similar but different to sorcerers, are somewhat more likely as they are used to the dedication required.
Other Classes: It takes a while for anyone to realise that an Eldritch Scholar is more than a warlock, or a few minutes on the receiving end of one. Those that respect power respect Eldritch Scholars more for they have become more powerful, while wizards and others who originally had to study to achieve their powers often have a grudging respect for Eldritch Scholars, for they have gone a long way from those who got power by selling themselves or through sheer chance.
Role: Fire/battlefield Support. Eldritch Scholars have all the endurance of warlocks of similar level, but lack the raw power of the Warlock and come up just short of the adaptability of a Wizard.
Eldritch Scholars in the World: Eldritch Scholars become much the same as the archetypical wizard, either holed up in a tower studied something esoteric , or travelling to try out this or that new do idea. Often a combination of both, as high level Scholars will have access to rings of sustenance and very large storage devices.
Inspiration: Didn't I tell you before... You know, up there ^?

Prerequisites
Skills: 9 Spellcraft, 9 Knowledge [Arcarna], 9 Concentration
Feats: Iron Will
'Spellcasting': Access to one or more Least Invocations.
Special: Must have a positive int mod. Must have travelled with a wizard/Psion/[Other 'casting' class that can learn powers] and expressed an interest in their learning’s, or must have sought to learn further powers of their own free will.

Hit Die: d6
Abilities: If it was important before it was important now. However, Intelligence is now important, as it adds additional invocations, and works a few abilities.
Class Skills-The Eldritch Scholar's class skills (and the key ability for each skill are):

Class Abilities

Weapon and Armour Proficiency: A Eldritch Scholar gains no new weapon or armour proficiencies.

Previous Invoking Class: The Eldritch Scholar advances in Warlock just like any other class that advances arcane casting/invoking, with the exception that eldritch blast damage only increases as if the Eldritch Scholar gained 3/4 of a level in Warlock.

Cracked the Code/Student of the Eldritch Arts: At first Level a Warlock has spent weeks, maybe months (...or even years!) studying all he could about the eldritch arts, and seeking, struggling, to learn more and expand his abilities, finally has, and not through sheer dumb luck, with the ability to replicate it. The Eldritch Scholar gains the Extra Invocation feat, and can learn invocations as is listed under the 'Adding Invocations' section, up to a maximum of his 1/2 levels in all invoker classes rounded down, + 1/2 the Eldritch Scholars Int Mod rounded up. [If you somehow get 0 or Below 1, there is a problem...]

In Example Terry, the resident Eldritch Scholar in a world where they have become common place, is a Warlock [Some Variety]6/Eldritch Scholar 1 with 16 Int. He can now learn 5 [(6+1)/2=3.5, Rounding makes 3, +2 for int/2 rounded up] Invocations of his choices, to add to his list of known invocations, of either the Least or Lesser Variety.

Eldritch Scribe: Many arcarnists, diviners and others learn through studding writings or held manifestations, and through that learn to infuse items with the same magic. The Eldritch Scholar gains the Scribe Scroll feat, being able to create a scroll of any Invocation he knows.

Eldritch Secret: At 2nd Level and every other even level [as is on the table] the Eldritch Scholar may pick an Eldritch Secret from the table Eldritch Secrets on Page 2.

Bonus Feat: At Third Level, and every other level divisible by three [as is on the table] the Eldritch Scholar gains a bonus feat from the New/Other Homebrewers Feats list on page 3.

With But Force of Will: With sheer force of will, their unique power source and much learning, the Eldritch Scholar [probably by accident at first] learns to be able to cast invocation very differently from their counterparts.
At 5th level, a Eldritch Scholar can spend a full phase action to invoke and invocation he knows without requiring somatic components. Invocations with shorter use times go one step up in time [Free to Swift, Swift to Move, Move to Standard] required to invoke, and any invocation requiring any components other than Foci and/or Materials loose those components. Invocations with longer casting times retain the same casting time, however the Arcane Scholar instead appears to be sitting in deep concentration looking at something for no apparent reason...

At 8th Level, time is no longer modified when manifesting without components, and Foci/Materials with costs above 1gp can instead be paid for with XP in the ration of 5gp/1XP. Also, all warlock invocations are treated as having no components if components are under 1gp in value.

Greater Eldritch Secret: At 6th and 8th level, the Warlock has reached new heights of his arts, and can choose from the Greater Eldritch Secrets list instead of the Eldritch Secrets list if so desired. [See Page 2]

A True Student: The Eldritch Scholar has well and truly begun mastering his art, and now can learn invocations as is listed under the 'Adding Invocations' section, up to a maximum of 3/4 his levels in all invoker classes, rounded down, + the Eldritch Scholars Int Mod.

In Example Terry, the resident Eldritch Scholar in a world where they have become common place, is a Warlock [Some Variety]6/Eldritch Scholar 7 with 16 Int. He can now learn 13 [(6+7)/1.25=9.75, Rounding makes 10, +3 for int] Invocations of his choices, to add to his list of known invocations.

Contingency: Did you think planning, paranoia and forethought were just the domains of Wizards and their Ilk?
The Eldritch Scholar gains the Craft Contingency Spell Feat, where any of his invocations are valid choices for 'spells'

A True Secret: At 10th level, the Warlock has reached the pinnacle [or so he thinks] of his arts, and can chose a single secret from the True Secret list, 2 Secrets from the Greater Eldritch Secrets List or 3 Secrets from the Eldritch Secrets list. [See Page 2]

A Lore master in His Own Right: The Eldritch Scholar has well and truly become something that wizards must fear, being able to learn invocations as is listed under the 'Adding Invocations' section, up to a maximum of his levels in all invoker classes +Twice his Int mod.

In Example Terry, the resident Eldritch Scholar in a world where they have become common place, is a Warlock [Some Variety]6/Eldritch Scholar 10 with 16 Int. He can now learn 24 [16+6[Int*2]] Invocations of his choices, to add to his list of known invocations.

-----

Ok, Posting this up now for people to point out obvious errors as I have done the base... I need to think of a different way to limit maximum invocations as over level 16, there would be little reason other than cost [when I put it up] to learn non dark invocations, and there is still a cap. However, this cap triples the base warlock classes invocations know from study, and just over doubles the cap of some of the large invocation numbers from some homebrew classes, where one to assume 16 int. And any player worth their salt can achieve that.
As said, tweaks to come, and as is obvious, I have to type in secrets and bonus feats [looking at the time now, maybe starting tomorrow], just give me a few moments for spare posts... I'm thinking 8.

Eldritch Secrets

Ability Focus (Ex): Choose one invocation you can use. You increase the save DC of the selected invocation by +2. This dark secret can be chosen multiple times; its effects do not stack. Each time you select this dark secret, it applies to a different invocation.

Additional Invocation: As per the feat of the same name.

Extra Class Skill (Ex): Select one skill that is not on your list of class skills. You add this skill to your list of class skills. This dark secret can be chosen multiple times; its effects do not stack. Each time you select this dark secret, it applies to a different skill.

Forbidden Knowledge (Ex): Select 2 Knowledge skills that are not on your list of class skills. You add these two Knowledge skills to your list of class skills. This dark secret can be chosen multiple times; its effects do not stack. Each time you select this dark secret, it applies to two new Knowledge skills.

Potent Blast (Su): You add your Charisma modifier to your eldritch blast damage rolls and to your caster level checks to overcome spell resistance against the targets of your eldritch blast.

Piercing Blast (Sp): You increase the critical multiplier of your eldritch blast to x3.

Potent Invocations (Sp): You add your Charisma modifier to the DC of caster level checks to dispel your invocations.

Slashing Blast (Sp): You increase the threat range of your eldritch blast to 18-20.

Lost Heir: You gain the Pact Heir (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=182566) Template with no additional level adjustment. If you already have the template, it nolonger causes any level adjustment [which obviously grants another level].

Greater Eldritch Secrets

Twin Essences (Sp): You can apply two eldritch essences simultaneously to your eldritch blast. This stacks with Master of Essences Epic Feat, allowing you to apply three eldritch essences simultaneously to your eldritch blast.

Twin Shape(Sp): You can apply two eldritch shapes simultaneously to your eldritch blast.

Advanced Ability Focus (Ex): Choose one invocation you have applied the ability focus dark secret to. You increase the save DC of the selected invocation by an additional +2, for a total of +4. This advanced dark secret can be chosen multiple times; its effects do not stack. Each time you select this advanced dark secret, it applies to a different invocation.

Extra Invocation (Sp): You gain an additional invocation of any level you may select from normally.

Heir Eldritch: If you have the Pact Descendent (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=182566) template, you now gain the Pact Heir (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=182566) template with no aditional level adjustment. If you already have the template, it nolonger causes any level adjustment [which obviously grants another level].

Taping Heirator: You gain a additional Special Quality from either the Pact Heir or Pact Descendent list, or an additional special quality from the Pact Heir list. You still cannot choose a special quality multiple times, not that it would help...

True Secrets:

Tri-Essences (Sp): You can apply three eldritch essences simultaneously to your eldritch blast. This stacks with Master of Essences Epic Feat, allowing you to apply four eldritch essences simultaneously to your eldritch blast.

Tri-Shape(Sp): You can apply three eldritch shapes simultaneously to your eldritch blast.

Eldritch Echo
Whenever you use an invocation, you may choose to have it automatically cast again at the beginning of your turn in the following round. No matter where you might have moved in the previous round, the second invocation originates from the same location and affects the same area as the original spell. If the original invocation designates a ranged target, the repeated invocation affects the same target if it is within 30 feet of its original position; otherwise, the second invocation fails. If the original invocation has a range of touch, the repeated invocation affects the same target if it is within 5ft of its original position; otherwise, the second invocation fails.

Enduring Invocations
All personal range invocations with a duration of 24 hours are now permanent duration, though you may choose to dismiss or restart the effect as a free action. Should any such invocation be dispelled, it may be resumed as normal or as a free action in [Dispellers caster level/5] turns.

An Improved Familiar causes your familiar to act as though you were of lower level. Learning New Invocations

To Learn a new invocation, a Eldritch Scholar must Spend much time in meditation, practice, search of various bits of esorteric knowledge and expanding of his own knowledge. Much like a wizard designing a new spell, the warlock is designing a new 'expression' of his or her innate tallent. Unfortuneately this process is much harder for Warlocks.

This process takes/costs:
Spell Level^2*2000 [Twice that of a Sorcerrers knowstone] gp in materials per spell level. [This is given/chosen in the invocations discription, as it is required for DC's. Common Invocation Grade/Spell Levels include: 1-3/Least, 3-5/Lesser, 5-7/Greater, 7-9/Dark]
56 Hours of 'work' per Invocation Grade. [i.e. Least, Lesser...]
500xp Per Invocation grade [i.e. Least, Lesser...]

For the 56 hours of thought, a Eldritch scholar normally spends 4 hours per day. However, for every hour spent learning past 4 generally burns out the Eldritch Schollar, due to the nature of the power and how the mind must interact with it.
For every Hour [or part there of] the Eldritch Scholar studdies past the fourth, the Eldritch Schollar must roll a Concentration, Fortitude and Will Save with DC's of:
10+Spell Level+Invocation Grade+Number of hours past fourth.

If the Concentration save fails, the Eldritch schollar makes no progress and the hour counts as having not been used.
If the Will save fails, The Eldritch scholar suffers 1 point of inteligence damage, and suffers a -2 to all inteligence based skill roles as the Eldritch scholar wears out his mind. Should the Eldritch scholar be reduced to 3 Inteligence in this way, he imidiately suffers 1 point of Inteligence Drain and falls unconcious for 24 hours.
If the Fortitude save fails, the Eldritch Scholar suffers 1 point of Charisma Damage and gains the fatigued condition as thr process of touching his sould Fatigues him and burns out his very esscence. Should the Eldritch Scholar be reduced to 0 Charisma this way, the Eldritch Scholar immidiately suffers 1 point of Charisma Drain, gains the fatigued condition for 72 hours [that affects the Eldritch Scholar regardless of immunities. The duration is so long due to the becoming comatose as of 0 charisma].

{{I'm thinking of raising the limits, but they mostly exist as a, Did you really? Sure, go ahead, heres a kill switch. The Int threshold is higher as the Eldritch schollar just gained animal inteligence.}}

Oh, and yes, constructive critisisms... You can come in with those.'

This'll go great with some levels in Scion of Ashardalon. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=12572931&postcount=11)

Or maybe Unrepentant Pact-Bound Hunter (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10933013&postcount=8); getting more Ranger spells/Assassin spells as Invocations is luverly.

Ok, been tinkering with Secrets and Feats, and I'm done barring suggestions.

As for learning new invocations, this is tricky. I still wan't some sort of cap beyond gold/xp given the potential power, however my cap feels a little low.

I'm thinking costs should be closer to that of the Psion, at 1000 gold/power level and a week time, however warlocks have unlimited so it needs to be higher.
The only comparison I have though, is a item that instantly and permanently grants a lesser for 20000 however. Which seems a little high [however some is XP cost.]

I myself am vaugly thinking 1500 gp and 500xp/level [or double that per grade] taking 1-2 weeks per invocations [perhaps 1/2 grades or part thereof] with it taking 4 hours per day. [reduce time for ability damage as you burn out]

Ok, method of learning invocations up. It could be a little expensive.

Ok, A bit of a wait but there goes the base class [under everything else]. Just the most basic numbering, with invocations, I've gone 1 per level until you hit 5, after which you gain a new grade. Then on, you gain a new invocation of that grade every 2 levels, with Shapes and Essences gained every 2 levels after 1st [which starts with one].
As a lucky coincidence, at level 20 you learn one of every grade as well as a shape/essence.

As with the PRC, I plan on them having the ability to learn invocations, however the ability to swap out known ones for others might be better given the sheer number available. As it stands the Scholar Eldritch would have little over 4* the amount of invocations of the base warlock, and just of 2* the amount of most fixes.
