View Full Version : Temple of Thor

An imposing polished marble building sits next to the Town Hall. In front is a gold statue of Thor, wielding an extended warhammer. Inside are stained glass windows of dwarven lore, and a golden altar with diamonds and rubies and emeralds and sapphires set in. There are stone ale fountains on the sides of the wall, serving Powerale, straight from Valhalla. If you descend the stairs, you can see the High Priest's living quarters, and the Priest barracks. There is also a Sanctuary with an entrance off the street, and a weapons training facility. The temple was built to be indestructible, and it cannot be destroyed by mortal means.

The Temple of Thor has seen better days, thinks Gunther as he floats up to the worn steps of the stone structure. Years ago, when Gunther first came to Town, the Temple of Thor had been bustling with hundreds of dwarves and other creatures that deigned to worship the storm god. A golden statue of Thor stood out front and the altar was decorated with sparkling jewels. It had not been difficult to arrange for a priestess to give him his last rites; there was a virtual army of them.

But now, the Temple of Thor was a weathered building covered in vines and other creeping plant growth. The marble steps and pillars at the front of the Temple, once well-maintained and polished, were cracked and covered in dirt. The statue of Thor had disappeared; all that was left of the idol was a stone block where it once stood.

Gunther passed through the massive iron doors to find a vast and empty hall. Many of the pews were gone — stolen years before to be broken up for firewood — and there were no crowds of worshippers bowing before the image of Thor at the opposite end of the hall. It had resisted the wear of time; the huge stone statue still stood tall and proud, the Thunder God foisting his hammer towards the heavens.

"Hello?" he cried out, his voice echoing in the empty temple. "Is there anyone here?"

At first there was no response. Suddenly, Gunther heard a small, frightened voice speak out, and there appeared from behind a small door a short dwarven girl with raven-black hair tied into pigtails.

"Back, unclean spirit, the w-will of Thor commands you!" she shouts.

Gunther held out his hands. "Please, mistress, I mean you no harm. I'm no wraith here to feast on your soul; I have come to seek the help of the Temple in a matter that concerns us both. Is there anyone else here?"

The dwarven girl — Gunther guessed she was no more than thirty or so, still a teenager in her race's lifetime — wrapped her robes around her closely when she felt the sting of Gunther's aura of cold. She kept her holy symbol, a sprig of mistletoe, extended before her, not entirely trusting of him.

"There is no one else, spirit," she said. "My mistress left on an errand some time ago and has not returned."

Gretta, Gunther thought. "Priestess, tell me ... was your mistress named Gretta, by any chance? And was she a halfling?"

The young dwarf nodded, a look of worry flooding her features.

Gunther sighed. "Forgive me, priestess, I have some bad news. You better sit down; I have a story to tell."

A half-hour later, Gunther finished the tale concerning the Goddess of Winter. The young dwarf was looking forlorn, especially at the news of Gretta's death.

"Forgive me," Gunther said, "if I could have prevented her death, I would have."

The dwarf clasped her head. "What am I do now? I am the last priestess, and not even an adept — Gretta was my teacher! I don't even know half the rites!"

"Do you know the death rites?" he asked, and the girl shook her head.

"Well, fortunately, you have met one who knows them from firsthand experience," Gunther answered. "What would you do with Gretta's body?"

The dwarf looked up. "There is a place reserved for High Priestesses ... it is in the temple courtyard ... I'll need to bring her body here to .. to bury her."

"Very well," Gunther replied. "I unfortunately cannot help you with the lifting. Do you have a cart or some other mode of transportation?" The dwarf sniffed and nodded.

"Good. Let us go, then, before something happens to her body."

The dwarf looked up. "It's getting dark. W-what happens if we get attacked?"

Gunther smiled. "You leave that to me," he said. "I'm scarier than any bandit or vampire we'll liable to run into."

After some quick preparations, Gunther and the young dwarf departed the Temple, with a small mule in tow.

A few hours later, the young priestess — he had since learned her name was "Marta" — was patting down the soil on Gretta's grave with a small shovel. She laid a single white flower on the grave before stepping back; she was crying and her breath, visible in the cold air radiating from Gunther, was coming out in great heaving sobs.

Gunther pitied her but also himself when he remembered that he could not console her without killing her — his touch was deadly to living things.

"Great Thor," he began, launching into the lengthy prayer. He chanted for ten minutes without ceasing for breath before he finally relented; at the end, a raven cawed out, a sign that a messenger had come to escort the soul to Valhalla.

If only I could join her, Gunther thought, watching as Marta stalked away.

***

A while later, as Marta sat in the small room that served as her quarters, Gunther floated through the doors. "What happened to this place, Marta? Once this was one of the most bustling Temples in all the Town. Now it has but one priestess and is a silent ruin."

"What happens to most places in this Town," she sighed. "Busy for a time, but now gone and forgotten. The siege of the goblins killed most of the other dwarves off, and now no one comes here anymore, except the most faithful. Now I'm not sure what will happen to it."

Gunther nodded. "And what will you do now that Gretta is dead?"

"I don't know," she said. "I was a street urchin before Gretta took me in, promised to make me a priestess of Thor. But now she's dead, and I'm not even halfway through my training."

"What parts of your training are you lacking?"

Marta sighed. "I don't know two-thirds of the rituals and prayers to Thor. There are books, but I have trouble reading them; they're in a dialect that's strange to me. And I've only learned a few curative spells."

Gunther thought for a moment. "Perhaps I could help you," he said.

She looked up. "How?"

"In life, I was a scholar of ancient civilizations. On my world, Thor was one of the gods of Aesgard; studying Nordic mythology was a favourite topic of mine. I can't imagine the rituals being much different on this world than mine."

"You would help me become a full-fledged priestess?" Marta asked hopefully. "Can you teach me magic as well?"

Gunther rubbed his chin. "That I will have more difficulty with. Perhaps we can arrange to have a tutor."

Marta frowned and slumped back on the bed. "There's no money to pay them with. What few coins we receive in donations goes to just feeding me."

"Then we will have to increase the numbers of the congregation, and perhaps investigate ways of making money," Gunther replied. "Don't worry, Marta: the Temple of Thor will be great again."

((OOC: Gunther Halvorson is now stationed at the Temple of Thor. Anyone wishing to reach him may contact him here or PM me. In any case, this will be his home base from now on. Descriptions for Gunther and Marta will be posted in the Town characters thread.))

Gunther floated briefly into the Temple of Thor. Marta was kneeling before the statue of the great Thunder God, silently praying.

"Gunther, you have returned!" she said, smiling. "How did your errands go? Did you find someone to give us a charm against your cold aura?"

"Yes, I spoke with an archmage named Amiria. I suspect she or a servant will be popping in her soon," he replied. "Marta, were you outside at all in the past few hours? Did you spy the red mist that floated through Town?"

The young dwarf shook her head. "I've been inside all day and night. Why do you ask?"

"A cloud of spores floated through Town causing hallucinations in the townsfolk. It seems to have disappeared, but it may linger, so I want you to stay inside for a while."

He floated close to her. "I need to go underground for a while, on a mission. It might be somewhat dangerous, but I should be fine. But if I don't return, please, don't come looking for me. Stay here. I don't want you getting hurt."

He told her then about the cloud and the myconids and the Green Devourers. It unnerved her, but Marta put on a brave face and promised to pray for Gunther while he was gone. With a quick farewell, the ghost left.

"Mirage, please extend my thanks to Lady Amiria, and tell her she has the gratitude of our Temple and the blessing of Thor himself. You don't know what this means to me."

Marta smiles at Estone. "Sir, you are too gracious," she replies. "But in truth we probably need too much for you to help us alone."

"We need money to fix the temple ((about 20,000 gold pieces worth is needed in repairs alone, but Gunther is at the moment acquiring a large portion of that cash)) and we need to replenish the ranks of the faithful; I haven't seen a follower in here for months. While Gunther is helping me with learning the duties of a priestess, I also need to learn how to cast divine spells. I know a few ((first-level)) minor spells but I had only started my studies when the high priestess, Gretta, died."

"So you see, sir, our needs are great. In truth, I am simply thankful to receive this pendant so I don't freeze to death in Gunther's company," she says, shrugging her shoulders.

I probably need a weapon, just in case. I have a spare warhammer in my room, I suppose I could bring that..."

Marta is talking a mile a minute and shuffling nervously back and forth. It's clear that she's a little excited and a little afraid at the same time. She'll keep talking until Estone cuts her off.

((Gunther is down in the Fungal Court on a Plot, trying to help a race of mushroom people regain their home. OK, I don't feel like going through the whole clerical spellbook, but I could be up for something more. I guess my answer depends on this question: how powerful is Estone? I can't find him in the Town characters thread.))

(((Ooh, that's a little strong for anything I had planned. Never mind that part.))

"It might be a while until Gunther gets back. Do you want to go for a drink?" Marta says. Like all teenagers (even dwarves), the chance to sneak into a bar is too good to pass up, and being in Estone's company might get Marta beer without getting carded, so to speak. :smallwink:

Before Estone can answer, however, a ghost comes floating through the main doors of the Temple. Marta's face lights up even more at the sight of Gunther.

"You're back!" she shouts, waving cheerfully. She walks around over to Gunther, and holds up the amulet. "Look what a messenger from Amiria brought me!"

"Sweet Thor," Gunther says, eyeing the precious amulet. "It's breathtaking. I will have to thank her."

At that point Gunther notices Estone floating nearby. The ghost moves over to him. Estone, if he is capable of feeling temperature, notices the room get considerably colder — no wonder the girl needed an amulet to resist the cold.

"Greetings, sir," Gunther says. "My name is Gunther Halvorson. May I have the pleasure of your name?"

((Just for your info, Gunther appears as a naked human whose entire flesh has been blackened by frostbite. Hence the reason he radiates cold. Certain, umm, fleshy parts are no longer there, if you're offended by his nudity.))

Estone. Estone Wardric. You were at Amiria's right?

Gunther smiles. "Ah, yes, that's where I recognize you. I never got your name there. You mentioned coming by the temple; I'm glad you could make it. Has Marta been giving you any trouble?"

Not at all. I've just been teaching her a bit. She's a very eager student, and a quick learner as well. She'll be a very good high cleric someday.

"Really? That's wonderful! I have little skill with magic myself, and I've been looking for someone to help her. How did you do, Marta?"

"Pretty good," she said. "I'm pretty confident about using all the initiate-level spells. I even feel like I'm ready to move on to the next level." Estone will notice she is careful to avoid mentioning the trip to the cemetery.

"Well, I thank you Estone. I would shake your hand, but I'm unsure what my touch will do to you. Now, I hate to cut your visit short, but I'm afraid I need to borrow Marta for an errand that needs immediate attention. Would you be so kind as to excuse us?"

Think nothing of it. Please, go on your errand. I will return to Lady Amiria. If you need my help again, stop by, or call me with this.

A scroll of Sending appears next to Marta. Estone dissapears.

Marta takes the scroll of sending and looks after the place where Estone disappeared thoughtfully.

"He was nice," Gunther says.

"Yes, he was," she answers, somewhat dreamily.

Gunther looks his young pupil up and down, raising an eyebrow. "Well then," he announces, shaking her out of her stupor, "what do you say we go attend to my errand, hmm?"

"Yes, Gunther. Will I need anything?"

"No, you should be fine. You can bring a weapon if you wish, but you probably won't need it. I should warn you about the beings we're about to meet. They're called myconids..."

A half-hour later, they leave the temple.

((No. Marta's too young for that. But you have to understand: Marta's a young girl (about fifteen years old in terms of dwarf years) who's been shut away in this lonely Temple for over a year with only an aged halfling female and then a ghost to keep her company. So it's natural for her to develop a slight crush on the handsome young bard who came swooping in to teach her the ways of magic — God, it's almost poetic. But unless Estone is a complete scoundrel, it's really just an excuse to make Gunther take on the role of the protective father. Expect some accusing glares from him.))
