Hey there, I'm playing a game where I'm a focused specialist diviner/unseen seer. I really want to use contact other plane but I find the spell to be a bit insane in terms of the penalties so I thought I'd make a custom magic item.

I used the price of the Circlet of Persuasion and eyeballed a +1 to a skill check as 1,500 gp. The mirror doesn't really travel well and only works for CoP so it maybe should be cheaper, but at the same time, CoP is powerful if you can reliably make the checks.

Thoughts?

Oracle's Mirror

A very useful item to seers and oracles, this mirror acts as a buffer between the caster and the extraplanar forces that they routinely contact.
Description: This highly polished mirror is similar to a standard mirror that mages use for Scrying. It is embellished with powerful sigils of magic and stones representing the outer planes. When used, the mirror takes on aspects of the plane the contacted entity resides upon.
Activation: An Oracle's Mirror is activated by casting Contact Other Plane while staring deeply into the mirror.
Effect: By casting your consciousness into the mirror, you buffer your mental defenses against hostile extraplanar forces, giving you a +5 bonus to your Intelligence check to avoid having your Int and Cha dropped to 8.
Aura/Caster Level: Moderate Transmutation. CL 9
Construction: Craft Wondrous Item, Fox's Cunning
Price: 7,500 gp

1. how big is the mirror
2. could you enchant it with "zone of truth" as well so that the lying chance goes down?
3. price would probably be up to the DM, i mean it's not like this is really a normal magic item.

since it's giving you effectively a +5 on a (single) save, i'd make it the price of a +5 cloak of resistance divided by 3 (rembember, it's increasing your effective INT by 10, so it could be extremely expensive you ... one second. i think there are rules to see how much it would cost to do that.. gonna edit soon)

edit: or not, it appears that there is no place where you can get a massive price reduction if it's a very very niche case. so yea, i'd ask your DM.

i'd also ask your DM about getting spell resistance, casting contact other plane, and should you fail the INT check, using you SR to defend against your own spell.

if i were your DM, i'd say that it was 8.5k, and with the "zone of truth" spell, you could get either a weak version which helped them tell the truth(moves it up one category) for 21k, or a full zone of truth (moves it up two categories) for 38k. but that's just pulling numbers out of my ..head

edit2: you could also try and find someone to cast Commune (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/commune.htm). that has no chance to cause brain damage.

Why not have the mirror cast contact other plane for you when you use it?

Once a thread has been dead for 45 days, it's against the forum rules to post in it without getting a Mod's permission to resurrect the thread.

If you do want to talk about an older thread, the usual procedure is to make a new one, and link the old thread so it can be referenced.
