View Full Version : Good PbP APs?

What good RPG actual plays do you know of? I'm not looking for podcasts or session writeups or anything like that - I'm looking for IC threads for PbP games hosted on GiantITP or similar sites. These should be interesting to read, preferably also examples of 'good' play (in other words, of pedagogical value for those who wish to hone their RP, tactical, or DM skills).

Have you looked at the IC forum (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=13)?

You could also check out the Myth-Weavers (http://www.myth-weavers.com/forumhome.php) site. I don't run or play any campaigns there, but their advice threads are really helpful. If you wish to fine-tune your RP or DM skills. One really cool aspect about that site, is that your character sheet interacts with the game threads. For instance, if your character only speaks Common, you will not be able to read dialog that is written in language tags. I kind of wish the Playground had something like that... but I digress.

PbP intrinsically distills RP into its most refined form, because players have time to meditate on their words and actions and really get into character, so reading PbP campaigns is definitely a way to glean what you're trying learn, but don't hesitate to simply ask questions in the Roleplaying forum. That may actually be the most direct path to getting the information you seek.

I believe the OP is looking for specific recommendations.

Perhaps... but that would be very hit-and-miss.

He could do exactly what I suggested and find the same answers I could in the same amount of time. Only he's more invested in reading campaigns than I am.

The campaign I'm in is good... if a bit railroaded. If you want to read it, there's a link to it in my signature.

I've been in many good campaigns. And most of the best ones were done right here on the Playground via PbP. All those campaigns are dead now, so I can't exactly recommend them anymore, but I'm sure great campaigns are popping up every day. Here's an idea: only read the campaigns with the highest post count. They're likely to be riveting.

Player loyalty is fickle at best on PbP if you are anything less than a top-tier DM with top-tier role players.

Not to toot my own horn, but I'm running what I believe to be a pretty good OSR hexcrawl here (http://www.unseenservant.us/forum/viewforum.php?f=70). We started January 2013 and are just now closing in on 6000 posts -- not all IC, of course.

I like this one (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=182298).

This game (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=157464) has acquired several readers (affectionately referred to as our stalkers in the OOC thread), suggesting that it is a good one.

Those two both look cool. I don't suppose you could write a sentence or two saying why you think it'd be an interesting read?

The one is linked is basically MagiTech Firefly with the wittiest banter I have ever seen in a pbp game.

To shamelessly self-advertise - I keep the links to all my PBP games, both completed and currently running, in my sig. The first one started in 2009 and finished in 2011, so I like to think they're pretty successful as PBP games go.

The completed games are The Hour After Midnight (WFRP 2E), The Lord of Lost Heart (WFRP 2E, a sequel to Hour), and Chapters I-IV of Wake of the Byzantium (an episodic Dark Heresy campaign - each chapter is largely self-contained). The games currently in play are Ill Met By Morrslieb (WFRP 2E, continuing where Lord of Lost Heart left off), The Bloody Crown (a new WFRP 2E sandbox campaign set in the Border Princes), and Byzantium Chapter V (the final chapter).
