So, this is a half hearted patch for the fighter, but I was wondering about feats. It's said that feats dont scale with level the way the power of abilities do, and that this is part of the reason the fighter sucks even at the role it's SUPPOSED to fill.

But what if feats wernt handed out linerally, but logarithmically?

Fighter 1: no feats this level
Fighter 2: 1 Feat this level
Fighter 3: no feats this level
Fighter 4: 1 Feat this level
Fighter 5: 1 Feat this level
Fighter 6: 2 Feats this level
Fighter 7: 1 Feat this level
Fighter 8: 2 Feats this level
Fighter 9: 2 Feats this level
Fighter 10: 3 Feats this level
Fighter 11: 2 Feats this level
Fighter 12: 3 Feats this level
Fighter 13: 3 Feats this level
Fighter 14: 4 Feats this level
Fighter 15: 3 Feats this level
Fighter 16: 4 Feats this level
Fighter 17: 4 Feats this level
Fighter 18: 5 Feats this level
Fighter 19: 4 Feats this level
Fighter 20: 5 Feats this level

Probably still underpowered, but it would give the high level fighter the bredth of capability to take stuff like Skill Focus and other stuff to expand sideways, without worrying about raw combat power.

You end up with 50 feats. Fighters start running out of decent fighter feats at high levels with just the default class, and usually have to branch out into alternative combat styles. That helps a little, but the problem is that it's still just fighter combat styles, not something else, and there's only so much you can do with six different fighting styles when they've all got the same limitations. If they're not limited to fighter feats, fighters will get a lot better... but it will be the Incarnum feats they get that will be pulling all the weight, at which point you might as well just play an incarnate.

Adding more feats doesn't really help much when the problem is that feats simply don't offer enough. When casters are playing with their 16th-level tricks, it doesn't really matter how many 6th-level tricks you have... and 6th level is about as far as most feats will take you.

Fighters don't really need more feats, they need *better* feats. They only need more feats if we decide to make those hypothetical good fighter feats should have a bunch of prerequisites as a feat tax.
