If the feat quicken spell is used, the spell is now cast as a free action. So can it still be countered?

The spell is cast as a swift action with Quicken Spell. It can indeed be countered.

According to the SRD, it is cast as a Free action. Some supplements may change this.

Remember, folks: No matter how much sense they make, the rules in supplements are not universal.

If you have a readyed action to counter... I think yes.

I believe the reason it's called a free action rather than a swift action is that swift actions didn't exist in the beggining of 3.5. It is, however, in all ways identicle to a swift action (it can only be one once per round... and any splat book that DOES use swift actions eratas it as such).

Anyway, I believe it is possible to ready an action to go off in response to a swift action... or even a free action. However, I'm too lazy right now to actually check the rules to make sure I know what the #$@! I'm talking about, so at present, I stand prepared to eat my words on this.

Casting a quickened spell is an swift action (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/actionsInCombat.htm#swiftActions). You can perform another action, even casting another spell, in the same round as you cast a quickened spell. You may cast only one quickened spell per round. A spell whose casting time is more than 1 full round action cannot be quickened. A quickened spell uses up a spell slot four levels higher than the spell’s actual level. Casting a quickened spell doesn’t provoke an attack of opportunity (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/attacksOfOpportunity.htm).

Emphasis mine.

That one likewise refers to the casting of a quickened spell as a free action. I don't have access to the Wizard's site, for the "official" SRD, from work.

This was changed in errata. Some SRD variants update when errata is published. Others don't.

Good, prompt updating for errata is one of the reasons for the popularity of d20srd.org.

Nothing stops you from counterspelling a quickened spell (or any spell cast as a swift action for that matter).

As a general rule, if something doesn't explicitly mention that it effects counterspelling, it doesn't.

Food for thought, if your counter a Dispell Magic with a Dispell Magic do you need to make a dispelling check?

Only if you failed your spellcraft roll to identify that your opponent was casting Dispel Magic.

No, because you're countering with the same spell.
